Summary 1. From a culture medium of strain 12 ofYersinia pseudotuberculosis of subtype IB a mixture of exoglycans has been isolated which consists of acidic heteropolysaccharides bound ionically to a protein component.2. The yield and monosaccharide composition of the exoglycans produced depend on the conditions of growth and the form of the colonies.3. Summary An estimate has been made of the molecular weights and characteristic viscosities of aggregates of the LPPC fromYersinia pseudotuberculosis in water, and also in aqueous solutions of sodium chloride, urea, guanidine hydrochloride, and sodium dodecyl sulfate. The lipopolysaccharide-protein complex (LPPC) fromY. pseudotuberculosis isolated by extraction with trichloroacetic acid has been investigated by the methods of gel permeation chromatography, light scattering, and viscometry. The molecular-mass distributions of aggregates of the LPPC in water, 0.03 M Tris-HCl buffer (pH 8) and 0.1 M sodium chloride have been determined. A dependence of the polydispersity and dimensions of the aggregates on the concentration of the polymer and on the ionic strength of the solvent has been shown. Using ultrafiltration methods of isolation, a culture liquid ofY. pseudotuberculosis has yielded a protein fraction with a molecular mass of not less than 80–100 kDa which possesses hemagglutinating activity and the properties of an antireceptor. Conclusions The globulin of the algaPhyllophora is heterogeneous and consists of a number of fractions, some of which we assign to the glycoproteins. Lipopolysaccharides have been isolated from two R mutants of the pseudotuberculosis microbeYersinia tuberculosis, serovar VA. Mild acid hydrolysis followed by gel filtration on Sephadex G-25 gave the core oligosaccharides OS I and OS II. Complete acid hydrolysis showed that OS I consisted of residues of D-galactose, G-glucose, two heptoses (D-glycero-D-mannoheptose and L-glycero-D-mannoheptose), and D-glucosamine in a ratio of 1:2.5:4:1, while OS II consisted of residues of D-glucose, heptoses, and D-glucosamine in a ratio of 1:2.5:0.2. Summary 1. The composition of the acid fraction of the oleresin ofPinus pumila (Pall.) Regel. has been studied, and from it has been isolated, in addition to known compounds, the methyl ester of a new labdane acetoxy acid.2. In the hydrocarbon fraction of the oleoresin 11 monoterpenes and 26 sesquiterpenes have been found (and 17 of the latter have been identified).3. Summary The phospholipid complexes of the seeds ofErysimum diffusum andE. sylvestris have been investigated. It has been found that the amount of phospholipids in the seeds ofE. diffusum is lower than in those ofE. sylvestris, but their qualitative compositions are similar. The fatty-acid compositions of the triglycerides and of the total phospholipids of the two plants investigated have been studied. The compositions of the triterpene fractions of the unsaponifiable part of the ethereal extracts of the leaves ofB. nana andB. exilis have been studied. The leaves ofB. exilis have yielded a new triterpene for which the structure of 3,20(S),25-trihyproxydammar-23-ene is proposed, and a four component mixture of epimers at C-3 and C-24 of the compound 3,20(S),24-trihyproxydammar-25-ene. This review generalizes the results of structural investigations of the polysaccharides of the O-specific side chains, of the core oligosaccharides, and of the lipid A of the pseudotuberculosis microbeYersinia pseudotuberculosis which causes Far-Eastern scarlatina-like fever. The complete structures of the repeating units of the specific polysaccharides from the lipopolysaccharides of serovars I A, I B, III, IV A, V A, V B, and VI which are responsible for the O-antigenic specificity of the microorganism are given. For the majority of serovars the repeating unit is represented by a branched pentasaccharide. Exceptions are the lipopolysaccharides of serovars I A and III which have a tetrasaccharide repeating unit. The presence of an aminosugar residue at the reducing end, by which the O-specific chain is attached to the oligosaccharide of the core, is common and characteristic for the lipopolysaccharides isolated from all the serovars. From the WSPS-I of the bulbs with roots ofJuno drepanophylla, 15 fractions have been isolated by fractionation on DEAE-cellulose. Fractions 1 and 2 together made up 53% of the total weight of the fractions. Fraction 1 proved to be homogeneous on ultracentrifugation, on passage through Sepharose-4B, and on high-pressure LC.
