The possibilities of current-sheet formation in two-dimensional magnetic fields with a null line as well as the characteristic features of the plasma dynamics under high initial pressure conditions (helium, P 0≈300 mtorr) are investigated for the first time. It is shown that current-sheet formation and efficient compression of the plasma into a sheet require that the magnetic field gradient be sufficiently large. A brightly emitting compact region with electron density N e∼9×1016 cm−3, an order of magnitude higher than the gas atom density, was observed to form at the center of the layer. Zh. éksp. Teor. A new representation is found for the interaction of intense circularly polarized light with an atom. A stationary centrosymmetric part, which depends on the field parameter a 0=F2, is separated out from the atom-field interaction. The time-dependent part of the interaction is represented in the form of a multipole expansion with a 0 taken into account. The application of this representation for calculating the nonlinear dynamic polarizability of a complicated atom in the random-phase approximation with exchange is studied. Pis’ma Zh. éksp. Teor. The states of a hydrogen atom with principal quantum numbers n⩽3 in a constant uniform magnetic field ℋ are studied. Coefficients in the expansion of the energy of these states in powers of ℋ2 up to the 75th order are obtained. Series for the energies of the states and the wave functions are summed to values of ℋ on the order of the atomic magnetic field. A generalization of the moment method upon which these calculations are based can be used in other cases in which a hydrogen atom is perturbed by a potential with a polynomial dependence on the coordinates. The magnetic field dependence of the average spin of a localized electron coupled to conduction electrons with an antiferromangetic exchange interaction is found for the ground state. In the magnetic field range μH∼0.5T c (T c is the Kondo temperature) there is an inflection point, and in the strong magnetic field range μHT c , the correction to the average spin is proportional to (T c /μ H)2. In zero magnetic field, the interaction with conduction electrons also leads to the splitting of doubly degenerate spin impurity states. Zh. éksp. Teor. The optically induced magnetic moment of a stationary atom is calculated as a function of time and the resonance detuning ω-ω ba to within a constant factor having the dimensions of a magnetic moment based on the symmetry of an atom in the field of a resonant light pulse and symmetry with respect to time reversal including the initial conditions. The even dependence of the optically induced magnetic moment on ω-ω ba for an elliptically polarized pulse with an isotropic initial state of the atom and its odd dependence on ω-ω ba in the case of a linearly polarized pulsed with an anisotropic initial state in the atom’s alignment are shown to be consequences of symmetry with respect to time reversal and the initial conditions. This behavior is retained even after passage of the light pulse, when the resulting relaxation destroys the time reversal symmetry. The compound CaCo2 with the C15 cubic Laves phase structure and an estimated density of 5.21 g/cm3 has been synthesized at 8.0 GPa pressure. Magnetization measurements showed that the compound CaCo2 is a ferromagnet with Curie temperature 528 K and magnetic moment per Co atom 1.75 μB at T=4.2 K. LMTO calculations of the electronic band structure showed that CaCo2 forms as a result of an s-d electronic transition of Ca and in the ground state it is a ferromagnet with a high magnetic moment per Co atom. A contactless microwave method is used to measure the fast magnetic relaxation of granular ceramic samples of YBa2Cu3O7−x irradiated by neutrons with fluences of 1016–1019 cm−2. An experimental study of the time dependence of the relaxation of high-frequency (rf) absorption (f=100 MHz) after the action of an external magnetic field pulse has shown the magnetic relaxation times τ 0 to be in the time interval of 0.5–150 ms. The rf-absorption mechanism is discussed in terms of an intergranular system with a thermally activated flux of vortices and their diffusion in the granular medium. Fiz. Tverd. The axion vertex aγγγ, the probability of three-photon axion decay in an external magnetic field, and the cross section of the crossing process →2γ, which CP invariance forbids in vacuum, are calculated for the first time. It is shown that in superstrong magnetic fields BF 0=m 2/|e|=4.41·1013 G the probability of three-photon decay is greater than the probability of two-photon decay. An investigation was made of the magnetic state of a system of highly anisotropic BaO · 6Fe2O3 nanocrystals several lattice parameters thick and having a near-critical volume (∼10−18 cm3), obtained using cryochemical technology. It is observed that the particles are transformed to the superparamagnetic state and it is shown that the external magnetic field plays a role in its formation. An H-T diagram was obtained for the temperature range 300 K-T c, which shows various regions uncharacteristic of the macro-object, which are specifically attributed to the distribution over the anisotropy fields in the system and the impaired magnetic structure in the surface zone of the particles. Relatively large regions of magnetic fields and temperatures were observed where reversible rotation of the magnetization vector of particles with near-critical volume plays an important role. Fiz. The NMR spectrum of the quasi-one-dimensional easy-plane antiferromagnetic CsMnBr3, which has trigonal spin lattice, is investigated in detail. The measurements were performed on a wide-band NMR decimeter microwave-band spectrometer over a wide range of magnetic fields at temperatures 1.3–4.2 K. All three branches of the NMR spectrum previously found by us [JETP Lett. 64, 225 (1996)] are severely distorted because of the dynamic interaction with the Goldstone mode in the antiferromagnetic resonance spectrum. The experimental results in fields up to 40 kOe are described satisfactorily by an equation obtained by Zaliznyak et al. [JETP Lett. 64, 473 (1996)]. Formulas are obtained in our work that agree very well with experiment at all fields up to the “collapse” field H c of all sublattices. The unbiased NMR frequency in CsMnBr3 is determined to be v n0=416 MHz (T=1.3 K) in zero external magnetic field, and in this way the reduction in the spontaneous moment due to the quasi-one-dimensional nature of the system of Mn2+ spins, which according to our data amounts to 28%, is determined more accurately. The field dependences of the directions of the magnetic sublattices with respect to the magnetic field are obtained from the NMR spectra, confirming the equations of Chubukov [J. Phys. Condens. Matter 21, 441 (1988)]. The results on the field dependence of the width and intensities of the NMR lines are discussed, along with three observed anomalies: 1) a strong increase in the NMR frequency for nuclei in sublattices that are perpendicular to the magnetic field; 2) the nonmonotonic temperature dependence of the resonance field for the lower branch of the spectrum; 3) the presence of two branches of the NMR spectrum in large H c fields, in which the CsMnBr3 must be a quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetic. The NMR of 55Mn in the quasi-one-dimensional noncollinear anti-ferromagnet CsMnI3 is investigated at T=1.3 K in magnetic fields up to ∼80 kOe and angles between the field and C 6 axis ϕ≈ 0.5° and ϕ=7°. A new reorientational magnetic phase transition is observed in a field H c1≈39.0 kOe. The magnetic structure for H>H c1 is determined. The average Mn2+ spins of the magnetic sublattices in the new phase are determined from an analysis of the NMR spectrum to be 〈 S C 〉=1.63 and 〈S D 〉=1.72. Pis’ma Zh. éksp. Teor. Luminescence spectra of sufficiently pure n-type indium antimonide crystals (N DN A=(1–22)·1014 cm−3) in a magnetic field of up to 56 kOe, at temperatures of 1.8–2 K, and high optical pumping densities (more than 100 W/cm2) have been studied. More evidence of the existence of electron-hole liquid stabilized by magnetic field has been obtained, and its basic thermodynamic parameters as functions of magnetic field have been measured. When the magnetic field increases from 23 to 55.2 kOe, the liquid density increases from 3.2·1015 to 6.7·1015 cm−3, the binding energy per electron-hole pair rises from 3.0 to 5.2 meV, and the binding energy with respect to the ground exciton level (work function of an exciton in the liquid) rises from 0.43 to 1.2 meV. Magnetic neutron diffractometry revealed the existence in (Fe1−x Cox)Ge2 solid solutions (x<0.5) with C16 structure of only two magnetic phases, namely, low-temperature (AFI) and high-temperature (AFII). A third magnetic phase, AFIII, suggested by earlier magnetic measurements, has not been found. The AFI and AFII phases have a commensurate and an incommensurate antiferromagnetic structure with the wave vectors k 0=2π/a (1,0,0) and k=k 0+δ k, respectively. The regions of their existence are shown in the magnetic phase diagram. Neutron diffraction measurements yielded the concentration dependence of the average magnetic moment per atom in the antiferromagnetic sublattice of a 3d metal, which, similarly to the dependence of the Néel point on x, was found to be nonlinear. An analysis of these dependences suggests that substitution of cobalt for iron is accompanied, on the one hand, by a decrease of the local spin density on the iron atoms in the nearest environment of a cobalt atom and, on the other hand, by an increase of the effective exchange integral between the nearest-neighbor iron atoms located along the tetragonal axis. A study is reported of the dependence of magnetoresistance Δρ/ρ on the square of magnetization σ 2 of the semiconducting spinelide Cu0.625Ga0.375Cr2Se4, which exhibits a low-temperature transition from long-range magnetic order (LRMO) to the spin glass (SG) state in strong magnetic fields. It is shown that at the freezing temperature T f the Δρ/ρ(σ 2) relations change their slope, and that below T f this slope is about one half that for T>T f. This finding, together with the earlier observation that the freezing temperature does not depend on the frequency of the ac magnetic field in which it was measured, suggests that the spin-glass phase consists of spins of individual Cr3+ ions, and that the SG-LRMO crossover is a phase transition. The spectrum and intensities of NMR lines are investigated experimentally and theoretically for excitation by an alternating magnetic field h‖ parallel to a static field H in the quasi-one-dimensional, six-sublattice antiferromagnet CsMnBr3. A new mechanism of a “Coulomb explosion,” where ions are accelerated by the electric field separating charges at the magnetic Debye radius r BB/4πen e, is proposed on the basis of a nonquasineutral model of electronic vortices in a magnetic field. It is shown by means of numerical calculations that in the process of acceleration of the ions a collisionless shock wave, whose front has an effective width of the order of δ∼r B, determined by the breakdown of quasineutrality, is formed in a time of the order of ω pi −1 , where ωpi is the ion plasma frequency. The origin of such explosive dynamics is the formation of “holes” in the electron density at characteristic times of the order of ω pe −1pe is the electronic plasma frequency) as a result of the generation of electronic vorticity by the Weibel instability of an electromagnetic wave. The paper considers the effect of a magnetic field B on the transport of neutral composite particles, namely excitons, in weakly disordered two-dimensional (2D) systems. In the case of classical transport (when the interference of different paths is neglected), the magnetic field suppresses exciton transport, and the static diffusion constant D(B) monotonically drops with B. When quantum-mechanical corrections due to weak localization are taken into account, D(B) becomes a nonmonotonic function of B. In weak magnetic fields, where the magnetic length is much larger than the exciton Bohr radius, ℓB=(ℏc/eB)1/2a B =ε2/μe 2,a positive magnetodiffusion effect is predicted, i.e., the exciton mobility should increase with B. A system of pancake vortices formed near the boundary of a sample in a monotonically increasing external magnetic field is calculated with allowance for pinning due to the cellular structure of the medium for various values of the pinning parameter I, which is proportional to the critical current of the junction and the cell diameter. The shortest distance from the outermost vortex to the nearest neighbor is proportional to I −11. It is shown that the pinning parameter has a critical value I c separating two regimes with different types of critical states. For I<I c the external magnetic field has a threshold value H t(I), above which the field immediately penetrates the interior of the junction to an infinite distance. For I>I c the magnetic field decays linearly from the boundary into the interior of the junction. The value obtained in the study, I c=3.369, differs from the value of 0.9716 postulated by other authors. The dependence of the slope of the magnetic field profile near the boundary on I is determined. It is shown that the slope is independent of I in intervals 2πk<I<2πk+π. Fiz. Tverd. This is the first study of the temperature dependences of the atomic structure by neutron diffraction, as well as of the resistivity, differential magnetic susceptibility, and magnetoresistance of the ceramic system 154Sm1−x SrxMnO3 (x∼0.16–0.4). Samples (x⩾0.3) having an initially orthorhombic structure transfer upon cooling from the insulating to the metallic state and exhibit giant magnetoresistance, which at liquid-helium temperature reaches as high as 90% in magnetic fields up to 30 kOe. At lower doping levels (x⩽0.25), the compound has monoclinic structure. The resistivity of such compounds in zero magnetic field displays insulating behavior upon lowering the temperature to 77 K.
