In this paper we present a robust conjugate duality theory for convex programming problems in the face of data uncertainty within the framework of robust optimization, extending the powerful conjugate duality technique. We first establish robust strong duality between an uncertain primal parameterized convex programming model problem and its uncertain conjugate dual by proving strong duality between the deterministic robust counterpart of the primal model and the optimistic counterpart of its dual problem under a regularity condition. This regularity condition is not only sufficient for robust duality but also necessary for it whenever robust duality holds for every linear perturbation of the objective function of the primal model problem. More importantly, we show that robust strong duality always holds for partially finite convex programming problems under scenario data uncertainty and that the optimistic counterpart of the dual is a tractable finite dimensional problem. As an application, we also derive a robust conjugate duality theorem for support vector machines which are a class of important convex optimization models for classifying two labelled data sets. The support vector machine has emerged as a powerful modelling tool for machine learning problems of data classification that arise in many areas of application in information and computer sciences.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce a new dual program, which is representable as a semidefinite linear programming problem, for a primal convex minimax programming problem, and we show that there is no duality gap between the primal and the dual whenever the functions involved are sum-of-squares convex polynomials. Under a suitable constraint qualification, we derive strong duality results for this class of minimax problems. Consequently, we present applications of our results to robust sum-of-squares convex programming problems under data uncertainty and to minimax fractional programming problems with sum-of-squares convex polynomials. We obtain these results by first establishing sum-of-squares polynomial representations of non-negativity of a convex max function over a system of sum-of-squares convex constraints. The new class of sum-of-squares convex polynomials is an important subclass of convex polynomials and it includes convex quadratic functions and separable convex polynomials. The sum-of-squares convexity of polynomials can numerically be checked by solving semidefinite programming problems whereas numerically verifying convexity of polynomials is generally very hard.  相似文献

By means of a conjugation scheme based on generalized convex conjugation theory instead of Fenchel conjugation, we build an alternative dual problem, using the perturbational approach, for a general optimization one defined on a separated locally convex topological space. Conditions guaranteeing strong duality for primal problems which are perturbed by continuous linear functionals and their respective dual problems, which is named stable strong duality, are established. In these conditions, the fact that the perturbation function is evenly convex will play a fundamental role. Stable strong duality will also be studied in particular for Fenchel and Lagrange primal–dual problems, obtaining a characterization for Fenchel case.  相似文献

The authors study an infinite dimensional duality theory finalized to obtain the existence of a strong duality between a convex optimization problem connected with the management of vaccinations and its Lagrange dual. Specifically, the authors show the solvability of a dual problem using as basic tool an hypothesis known as Assumption S. Roughly speaking, it requires to show that a particular limit is nonnegative. This technique improves the previous strong duality results that need the nonemptyness of the interior of the convex ordering cone. The authors use the duality theory to analyze the dynamic vaccination game in order to obtain the existence of the Lagrange multipliers related to the problem and to better comprehend the meaning of the problem.

In this article we provide weak sufficient strong duality conditions for a convex optimization problem with cone and affine constraints, stated in infinite dimensional spaces, and its Lagrange dual problem. Our results are given by using the notions of quasi-relative interior and quasi-interior for convex sets. The main strong duality theorem is accompanied by several stronger, yet easier to verify in practice, versions of it. As exemplification we treat a problem which is inspired from network equilibrium. Our results come as corrections and improvements to Daniele and Giuffré (2007) [9].  相似文献

In this paper we present a robust duality theory for generalized convex programming problems in the face of data uncertainty within the framework of robust optimization. We establish robust strong duality for an uncertain nonlinear programming primal problem and its uncertain Lagrangian dual by showing strong duality between the deterministic counterparts: robust counterpart of the primal model and the optimistic counterpart of its dual problem. A robust strong duality theorem is given whenever the Lagrangian function is convex. We provide classes of uncertain non-convex programming problems for which robust strong duality holds under a constraint qualification. In particular, we show that robust strong duality is guaranteed for non-convex quadratic programming problems with a single quadratic constraint with the spectral norm uncertainty under a generalized Slater condition. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the nature of robust duality for uncertain nonlinear programming problems. We further show that robust duality continues to hold under a weakened convexity condition.  相似文献

In this paper, we establish tractable sum of squares characterizations of the containment of a convex set, defined by a SOS-concave matrix inequality, in a non-convex set, defined by difference of a SOS-convex polynomial and a support function, with Slater’s condition. Using our set containment characterization, we derive a zero duality gap result for a DC optimization problem with a SOS-convex polynomial and a support function, its sum of squares polynomial relaxation dual problem, the semidefinite representation of this dual problem, and the dual problem of the semidefinite programs. Also, we present the relations of their solutions. Finally, through a simple numerical example, we illustrate our results. Particularly, in this example we find the optimal solution of the original problem by calculating the optimal solution of its associated semidefinite problem.  相似文献

Semidefinite programs are convex optimization problems arising in a wide variety of applications and are the extension of linear programming. Most methods for linear programming have been generalized to semidefinite programs. Just as in linear programming, duality theorem plays a basic and an important role in theory as well as in algorithmics. Based on the discretization method and convergence property, this paper proposes a new proof of the strong duality theorem for semidefinite programming, which is different from other common proofs and is more simple.  相似文献

In this paper, an exact dual is derived for Semidefinite Programming (SDP), for which strong duality properties hold without any regularity assumptions. Its main features are: (i) The new dual is an explicit semidefinite program with polynomially many variables and polynomial size coefficient bitlengths. (ii) If the primal is feasible, then it is bounded if and only if the dual is feasible. (iii) When the primal is feasible and bounded, then its optimum value equals that of the dual, or in other words, there is no duality gap. Further, the dual attains this common optimum value. (iv) It yields a precise theorem of the alternative for semidefinite inequality systems, i.e. a characterization of theinfeasibility of a semidefinite inequality in terms of thefeasibility of another polynomial size semidefinite inequality. The standard duality for linear programming satisfies all of the above features, but no such explicit gap-free dual program of polynomial size was previously known for SDP, without Slater-like conditions being assumed. The dual is then applied to derive certain complexity results for SDP. The decision problem of Semidefinite Feasibility (SDFP), which asks to determine if a given semidefinite inequality system is feasible, is the central problem of interest, he complexity of SDFP is unknown, but we show the following: (i) In the Turing machine model, the membership or nonmembership of SDFP in NP and Co-NP is simultaneous; hence SDFP is not NP-Complete unless NP=Co-NP. (ii) In the real number model of Blum, Shub and Smale, SDFP is in NP∩CoNP.  相似文献

Universal duality in conic convex optimization   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Given a primal-dual pair of linear programs, it is well known that if their optimal values are viewed as lying on the extended real line, then the duality gap is zero, unless both problems are infeasible, in which case the optimal values are +∞ and −∞. In contrast, for optimization problems over nonpolyhedral convex cones, a nonzero duality gap can exist when either the primal or the dual is feasible. For a pair of dual conic convex programs, we provide simple conditions on the ``constraint matrices' and cone under which the duality gap is zero for every choice of linear objective function and constraint right-hand side. We refer to this property as ``universal duality'. Our conditions possess the following properties: (i) they are necessary and sufficient, in the sense that if (and only if) they do not hold, the duality gap is nonzero for some linear objective function and constraint right-hand side; (ii) they are metrically and topologically generic; and (iii) they can be verified by solving a single conic convex program. We relate to universal duality the fact that the feasible sets of a primal convex program and its dual cannot both be bounded, unless they are both empty. Finally we illustrate our theory on a class of semidefinite programs that appear in control theory applications. Quadratically constrained quadratic programming is an important class of optimization problems. We consider the case with one quadratic constraint. Since both the objective function and its constraint can be neither convex nor concave, it is also known as the ‘generalized trust region subproblem.’ The theory and algorithms for this problem have been well studied under the Slater condition. In this article, we analyse the duality property between the primal problem and its Lagrangian dual problem, and discuss the attainability of the optimal primal solution without the Slater condition. The relations between the Lagrangian dual and semidefinite programming dual is also given.  相似文献

In this paper we present a duality approach for a multiobjective fractional programming problem. The components of the vector objective function are particular ratios involving the square of a convex function and a positive concave function. Applying the Fenchel-Rockafellar duality theory for a scalar optimization problem associated to the multiobjective primal, a dual problem is derived. This scalar dual problem is formulated in terms of conjugate functions and its structure gives an idea about how to construct a multiobjective dual problem in a natural way. Weak and strong duality assertions are presented.  相似文献

In this paper, we deal with regularity conditions formulated by making use of the quasirelative interior and/or of the quasi-interior of the sets involved, guaranteeing strong duality for a convex optimization problem with cone (and equality) constraints and its Lagrange dual. We discuss also some recent results on this topic, which are proved to have either superfluous or contradictory assumptions. Several examples illustrate the theoretical considerations. The zero duality gap that underpins the duality theory is one of the central ingredients in optimisation. In convex programming, it means that the optimal values of a given convex program and its associated dual program are equal. It allows, in particular, the development of efficient numerical schemes. However, the zero duality gap property does not always hold even for finite-dimensional problems and it frequently fails for problems with non-polyhedral constraints such as the ones in semidefinite programming problems. Over the years, various criteria have been developed ensuring zero duality gaps for convex programming problems. In the present work, we take a broader view of the zero duality gap property by allowing it to hold for each choice of linear perturbation of the objective function of the given problem. Globalising the property in this way permits us to obtain complete geometric dual characterisations of a stable zero duality gap in terms of epigraphs and conjugate functions. For convex semidefinite programs, we establish necessary and sufficient dual conditions for stable zero duality gaps, as well as for a universal zero duality gap in the sense that the zero duality gap property holds for each choice of constraint right-hand side and convex objective function. Zero duality gap results for second-order cone programming problems are also given. Our approach makes use of elegant conjugate analysis and Fenchel's duality.  相似文献

With this note we bring again into attention a vector dual problem neglected by the contributions who have recently announced the successful healing of the trouble encountered by the classical duals to the classical linear vector optimization problem. This vector dual problem has, different to the mentioned works which are of set-valued nature, a vector objective function. Weak, strong and converse duality for this “new-old” vector dual problem are proven and we also investigate its connections to other vector duals considered in the same framework in the literature. We also show that the efficient solutions of the classical linear vector optimization problem coincide with its properly efficient solutions (in any sense) when the image space is partially ordered by a nontrivial pointed closed convex cone, too.  相似文献

Lagrangian Duality and Cone Convexlike Functions   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper, we consider first the most important classes of cone convexlike vector-valued functions and give a dual characterization for some of these classes. It turns out that these characterizations are strongly related to the closely convexlike and Ky Fan convex bifunctions occurring within minimax problems. Applying the Lagrangian perturbation approach, we show that some of these classes of cone convexlike vector-valued functions show up naturally in verifying strong Lagrangian duality for finite-dimensional optimization problems. This is achieved by extending classical convexity results for biconjugate functions to the class of so-called almost convex functions. In particular, for a general class of finite-dimensional optimization problems, strong Lagrangian duality holds if some vector-valued function related to this optimization problem is closely K-convexlike and satisfies some additional regularity assumptions. For K a full-dimensional convex cone, it turns out that the conditions for strong Lagrangian duality simplify. Finally, we compare the results obtained by the Lagrangian perturbation approach worked out in this paper with the results achieved by the so-called image space approach initiated by Giannessi.  相似文献

In this paper, we study quasi approximate solutions for a convex semidefinite programming problem in the face of data uncertainty. Using the robust optimization approach (worst-case approach), approximate optimality conditions and approximate duality theorems for quasi approximate solutions in robust convex semidefinite programming problems are explored under the robust characteristic cone constraint qualification. Moreover, some examples are given to illustrate the obtained results.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a necessary and sufficient condition for a zero duality gap between a primal optimization problem and its generalized augmented Lagrangian dual problems. The condition is mainly expressed in the form of the lower semicontinuity of a perturbation function at the origin. For a constrained optimization problem, a general equivalence is established for zero duality gap properties defined by a general nonlinear Lagrangian dual problem and a generalized augmented Lagrangian dual problem, respectively. For a constrained optimization problem with both equality and inequality constraints, we prove that first-order and second-order necessary optimality conditions of the augmented Lagrangian problems with a convex quadratic augmenting function converge to that of the original constrained program. For a mathematical program with only equality constraints, we show that the second-order necessary conditions of general augmented Lagrangian problems with a convex augmenting function converge to that of the original constrained program. This research is supported by the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong (PolyU B-Q359.)  相似文献

It is known that the minimal cone for the constraint system of a conic linear programming problem is a key component in obtaining strong duality without any constraint qualification. For problems in either primal or dual form, the minimal cone can be written down explicitly in terms of the problem data. However, due to possible lack of closure, explicit expressions for the dual cone of the minimal cone cannot be obtained in general. In the particular case of semidefinite programming, an explicit expression for the dual cone of the minimal cone allows for a dual program of polynomial size that satisfies strong duality. In this paper we develop a recursive procedure to obtain the minimal cone and its dual cone. In particular, for conic problems with so-called nice cones, we obtain explicit expressions for the cones involved in the dual recursive procedure. As an example of this approach, the well-known duals that satisfy strong duality for semidefinite programming problems are obtained. The relation between this approach and a facial reduction algorithm is also discussed.  相似文献

In this paper, under the existence of a certificate of nonnegativity of the objective function over the given constraint set, we present saddle-point global optimality conditions and a generalized Lagrangian duality theorem for (not necessarily convex) polynomial optimization problems, where the Lagrange multipliers are polynomials. We show that the nonnegativity certificate together with the archimedean condition guarantees that the values of the Lasserre hierarchy of semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations of the primal polynomial problem converge asymptotically to the common primal–dual value. We then show that the known regularity conditions that guarantee finite convergence of the Lasserre hierarchy also ensure that the nonnegativity certificate holds and the values of the SDP relaxations converge finitely to the common primal–dual value. Finally, we provide classes of nonconvex polynomial optimization problems for which the Slater condition guarantees the required nonnegativity certificate and the common primal–dual value with constant multipliers and the dual problems can be reformulated as semidefinite programs. These classes include some separable polynomial programs and quadratic optimization problems with quadratic constraints that admit certain hidden convexity. We also give several numerical examples that illustrate our results.  相似文献
