In this work, we report a series of poly(itaconic acid‐co‐acrylic acid‐co‐acrylamide) (poly(IA‐co‐AAc‐co‐AAm)) hydrogels via frontal polymerization (FP). FP starts on the top of the reaction mixture with aid of heating provided from soldering iron gun. Once polymerization initiated, no further energy is required to complete the process. The influences of IA/AAc weight ratios on frontal velocities, temperatures, and conversions on the reaction time are thoroughly investigated and discussed where the amount of AAm monomer remains constant. Fourier transform‐infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscope (SEM), dynamic mechanical analysis, and the swelling measurement are applied to characterize the as‐synthesized poly(IA‐co‐AAc‐co‐AAm) hydrogels. Interestingly, the swelling ratios of the hydrogels are changed with different IA/AAc contents, and the maximum swelling ratios are ~4439% in water. SEM images describe highly porous morphologies and explain good swelling capabilities. Moreover, the poly(IA‐co‐AAc‐co‐AAm) hydrogels exhibit superior pH‐responsive ability. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2019 , 57, 2214–2221  相似文献

Alicyclic hydroxy methacrylate monomer, o‐hydroxycyclohexyl methacrylate (HCMA), was synthesized and characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H‐NMR). Photopolymerization kinetics of HCMA was investigated via real‐time infrared spectroscopy (RT‐IR). Polymeric network hydrogels based on hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and HCMA were prepared by using the photopolymerization technique. Mechanical strength, swelling characteristic, and controlled release behavior of hydrogels with various feed compositions were studied. Poly(HEMA‐co‐HCMA) hydrogel had higher storage modulus than that of poly(HEMA) hydrogel as investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Acid orange 8 was used as a model drug for the investigation of drug release behavior of copolymeric hydrogels. Results indicated that increase in HCMA ratio in hydrogel composition could reduce the swelling rate and prolong the release time. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was also utilized to study the surface morphology of hydrogels, and the results indicated that HCMA content influenced pore diameter on the hydrogel surface. In this study, experimental measurements have been made on the batch adsorption of cadmium and lead ions from aqueous solutions using poly(guanidine modified 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropan sulfonic acid/acrylic acid/N‐vinylpyrrolidone/2‐Hydroxyethyl methacrylate), P(AMPSG/AAc/NVP/HEMA) hydrogels. The guanidyl end group bearing AMPSG monomer was synthesized from the reaction of AMPS and guanidine. The hydrogels were prepared by UV‐curing technique. The morphology of the dry H10‐hydrogel sample was examined by SEM. The influence of the uptake conditions, such as pH, functional monomer per cent, contact time, initial feed concentration, and foreign metal ions on the metal ion binding capacity of hydrogel, was also tested. The selectivity of the hydrogel toward the different metal ions tested was Hg(II) > Pb(II) > Au(III) > Cd(II). The adsorption isotherm models were applied to the experimental data, and it was seen that the Langmuir isotherm model was the best fit for the adsorption of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions on P(AMPSG/AAc/NVP/HEMA) hydrogel. It was found that adsorbed lead and cadmium ions on P(AMPSG/AAc/NVP/HEMA) hydrogel can be effectively desorbed by acid leaching and the regenerated P(AMPSG/AAc/NVP/HEMA) hydrogel can be reused almost five times less without any loss of adsorption capacity. We report a new facile strategy for quickly synthesizing pH sensitive poly(VI‐co‐HEA) hydrogels (VI = N‐vinylimidazole; HEA = 2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate) by frontal polymerization. The appropriate amounts of VI, HEA, and ammonium persulfate (APS)/N,N,N′,N′‐tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) couple redox initiator were mixed together at ambient temperature in the presence of glycerol as the solvent medium. Frontal polymerization (FP) was initiated by heating the upper side of the mixture with a soldering iron. Once initiated, no further energy was required for the polymerization to occur. The dependence of the front velocity and front temperature on the VI/HEA weight ratios were investigated. The pH sensitive behavior, morphology, and heavy metal removal study of poly(VI‐co‐HEA) hydrogels prepared via FP were comparatively investigated on the basis of swelling measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and inductively coupling plasma spectrometer. Results show that the poly(VI‐co‐HEA) hydrogels prepared via FP exhibit good pH sensitivity and adsorption capacity. The FP can be exploited as an alternative means for synthesis of pH sensitive hydrogels in a fast and efficient way. The as‐prepared hydrogels can be applied to remove heavy metals. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 4005–4012, 2010  相似文献

A unique natural polymer based colon specific drug carrier was prepared from carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and acrylic acid (AAc) in aqueous solution employing γ‐radiation induced copolymerization and crosslinking. The effect of preparation conditions such as the natural polymer content and irradiation dose on gelation process was investigated. The swelling behavior of the prepared hydrogels was characterized by investigating the time and pH dependent swelling of the (CMC/AAc) hydrogels of different CMC content. The effects of the hydrogel composition and pH of the swelling medium on the swelling indices were estimated. The results show that the increment in the CMC content in the feed solution enhances the gelation process. The results also show the dependence of the swelling indices on both hydrogel composition and pH value of the swelling medium. To evaluate the ability of the prepared hydrogel to be used as a colon‐specific drug carrier, the release profile of theophylline was studied as a function of time at pH 1 and pH 7.  相似文献

Based on a biodegradable cross-linker, acryloyloxyethylaminopolysuccinimide (AEA-PSI), a series of looser cross-linked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) [P(NIPAAm-co-AAc)] hydrogels were prepared, and their water content, swelling/deswelling kinetics, and the morphology of the gels were investigated. The swelling behaviors of AEA-PSI-cross-linked P(NIPAAm/AAc) hydrogels were investigated in Dulbecco’s phosphate-buffered saline (pH = 7.4), in the distilled water, and in the simulated gastric fluids (pH = 1.2), respectively. The water contents of the hydrogels were controlled by the monomer molar ratio of NIPAAm/AAc, swelling media, and the temperature. In the swelling kinetics, all the dried hydrogels exhibited fast swelling behavior, and the swelling ratios were influenced significantly by the amounts of AEA-PSI and AAc content. The deswelling kinetics of the hydrogel were independent of the content of AAc and cross-linker. Lastly, the morphology of the hydrogels was estimated by the field scan electron microscopy.  相似文献

Acrylamide (AAm)/Acrylic Acid (AAc) copolymers have been prepared by gamma irradiation of binary mixtures at three different compositions where the acrylamide/acrylic acid mole ratios varied around 15, 20, and 30%. Threshold dose for 100% conversion of monomers into hydrogels was found to be 8.0 kGy. Poly(Acrylamide‐co‐Acrylic Acid) (poly(AAm‐co‐AAc)) hydrogels have been considered for the removal of uranyl ions from aqueous solutions. Swelling behavior of these hydrogels was determined in distilled water at different pH values and in aqueous solutions of uranyl ions. The results of swelling tests at pH 8.0 indicated that poly(AAm‐co‐AAc) hydrogel, containing 15% acrylamide showed maximum % swelling. Diffusion of water and aqueous solutions of uranyl ion into hydrogels was found to be non‐Fickian in character and their diffusion coefficients were calculated. The effect of pH, composition of hydrogel, and concentration of uranyl ions on the adsorption process were studied at room temperature. It was found that one gram of dry poly(AAm‐co‐AAc) hydrogel adsorbed 70–320 mg and 70–400 mg uranyl ions from aqueous solutions of uranyl nitrate and uranyl acetate in the initial concentration range of 50–1500 mg UO2 2+L?, depending on the amount of AAc in the hydrogels, respectively. Adsorption isotherms were constructed for poly(AAm‐co‐AAc)–uranyl ion system indicating an S type of adsorption in the Giles classification system. It is concluded that crosslinked poly(AAm‐co‐AAc) hydrogels can be successfully used for the removal of uranyl ions from their aqueous solutions.  相似文献

We report a new facile strategy for quickly synthesizing poly(2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate‐co‐vinyl versatate) amphiphilic gels with excellent physicochemical properties by frontal free‐radical polymerization. The appropriate amounts of 2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate, vinyl versatate (VeoVa 9) and ammonium persulfate initiator were mixed together at ambient temperature in the presence of N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone as the solvent medium. Frontal polymerization (FP) was initiated by heating the wall of the tube with a soldering iron. Once initiated, no further energy was required for the polymerization to occur. The dependence of the front velocity and front temperature on the initiator concentration was investigated. The front temperatures were between 132 and 157 °C, depending on the initiator concentration. The morphology, swelling rate, and swelling behavior of amphiphilic gels prepared via FP were comparatively investigated on the basis of scanning electron microscopy, water contact angle, and swelling measurements. Results show that the amphiphilic gels prepared via FP behave with good swelling capacity both in water and organic solvents. The FP can be exploited as an alternative means for synthesis of amphiphilic gels with additional advantages of fast and efficient way. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The aim of this study was to synthesize and characterize a novel biocompatible polymeric membrane system and demonstrate its potential use in various biomedical applications. Synthetic hydrogels based on poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate), poly(HEMA), have been widely studied and used in biomedical fields. A novel copolymer hydrogel was prepared in the membrane form using 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate monomer (HEMA) and a macromonomer p-vinylbenzyl-poly(ethylene oxide) (V-PEO) via photoinitiated polymerization. A series of poly(HEMA/V-PEO) copolymer membranes with different compositions was prepared. The membranes were characterized using infrared, thermal and SEM analysis. The thermal stabilities of the copolymer membranes were found to be lowered by an increase in the ratio of macromonomer (V-PEO) in the membrane structure. Because of the incorporation of PEO segments, the copolymers exhibited significantly higher hydrophilic surface properties than pure poly(HEMA), as demonstrated by contact angle measurements. Equilibrium swelling studies were conducted to investigate the swelling behavior of the membranes. The equilibrium water uptake was reached in about 4 h. Moreover, the blood protein adsorption and platelet adhesion were significantly reduced on the surface of the PEO containing copolymer membranes compared to control pure poly(HEMA). Drug release experiments were performed in a continuous release system using model drug (vancomycin) loaded copoly(HEMA/V-PEO) membranes. A specific poly(HEMA/V-PEO) membrane formulation possessing the highest PEO content (with a HEMA:V-PEO (mmol:mmol) feed ratio of 112:1 and loaded with 40 mg antibiotic/g polymer) released about 81% of the total loaded drug in 24 h at pH 7.4. This membrane composition provided the best results and can be considered as a potential candidate for a transdermal antibiotic carrier and various biomedical and biotechnological applications.  相似文献

Semi‐interpenetrating network (semi‐IPN) hydrogels, composed of poly(aspartic acid) (PAsp) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc) with various ratios of PAsp to AAc, were prepared. In this work, swelling kinetics was investigated through calculating some parameters. The swelling ratios were measured at room temperature, using urea solutions as liquids to be absorbed. Compared to in deionized water, the hydrogels showed larger swelling ratios in urea solutions, which might be attributed to the chemical composition of urea. The equilibrium swelling ratio could achieve 600 g/g, and the equilibrium urea/water contents were more than 0.99. The diffusion exponents were between 0.5 and 0.7, suggesting that the solvent transport into the hydrogel was dominated by both diffusion and relaxation controlled systems. Therefore, the PAsp/PAAc semi‐IPN hydrogels were appropriate to carry substances in a urea/water environment for pharmaceutical, agricultural, environmental, and biomedical applications. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Frontal polymerization (FP) is applied for the synthesis of β‐cyclodextrin/poly(vinylimidazole‐co‐N‐vinylcaprolactam‐co‐acrylic acid) (β‐CD/P(VI‐co‐NVCL‐co‐AA)) copolymers. The dependence of frontal velocity and temperature on the initiator and cross‐linker are discussed. The synthesized copolymers have been characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermo‐pH dual‐stimuli responsive behavior of the hydrogel is determined by swelling measurement at different temperatures and pH values. Besides, the hydrogels show intrinsic self‐healing behavior and their healing efficiency is determined by the mechanical tests. Interestingly, we integrate FP with microfluidic technology, which may realize the execution of FP under continuous condition. Such simple microfluidics‐FP integrated approach has both methodological and practical value for the synthesis of functional materials. This paper mainly presents the synthesis and characterization of β‐cyclodextrin/poly(vinylimidazole‐co‐N‐vinylcaprolactam‐co‐acrylic acid) (β‐CD/P(VI‐co‐NVCL‐co‐AA)) copolymers by using thermal frontal polymerization (TFP). Hydrogels were found to be self‐healing with good mechanical performance and show dual thermo‐pH responsive behavior. Low‐cost, energy‐saving and efficient method of thermal frontal polymerization process was integrated with microfluidics technology to prepare supraball hydrogel. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Superabsorbent hydrogels based on the natural polymer chitosan and acrylic acid (CS/AAc) was prepared using 60Co gamma radiation as a source of initiation and crosslinking. The factors, which affect the preparation of CS/AAc hydrogels such as irradiation dose, CS/AAc ratios, and acrylic acid monomer concentrations, to get the best optimum conditions, were investigated. The kinetic studies of the swelling of CS/AAc hydrogel showed that it follows a Fickian type of water diffusion. The Fickian constant value ‘n’ was more than 0.5 with a high swelling capacity of 300 g/g as superabsorbent hydrogel. In addition, the suitability of CS/AAc hydrogel as carrier material for the drug Chlortetracycline-HCl has been investigated by adsorption isotherm studies. The performance of drug release from hydrogel systems, influenced by acrylic acid ratio and the effect of pH of the medium was studied.  相似文献

The swelling behavior of acrylamide (AAm)–based polyampholyte hydrogels in water and in aqueous salt (NaCl) solutions was investigated. [(Methacrylamido)propyl]trimethyl‐ammonium chloride (MAPTAC) and acrylic acid (AAc) were used as the ionic comonomer in the hydrogel preparation. Three sets of hydrogels containing 70 mol% AAm and 30 mol% ionic comonomers of varying mole ratios were prepared. The variations of the hydrogel volume in response to changes in pH, and salt concentration were measured. As pH increases from 1, the hydrogel volume V eq in water first increases and reaches a maximum value at a certain pH. Then, it decreases again with a further increase in pH and attains a minimum value around the isoelectric point (IEP). After passing the collapsed plateau region, the gel reswells again up to pH=7.1. The reswelling of the collapsed gels containing 10 and 4% MAPTAC occurs as a first‐order phase transition at pH=5.85 and 4.35, respectively, while the hydrogel with 1% MAPTAC reswells continuously beyond its IEP. Depending on pH of the solution, the hydrogels immersed in salt solutions exhibit typical polyelectrolyte or antipolyelectrolye behavior. The experimental swelling data were compared with the predictions of the Flory‐Rehner theory of swelling equilibrium including the ideal Donnan equilibria. It was shown that the equilibrium swelling theory qualitatively predicts the experimental behavior of polyampholyte hydrogels.  相似文献

Stimuli‐responsive bioconjugated hydrogels that can respond to a target antigen (antigen‐responsive hydrogels) were prepared by introducing antigen‐antibody bindings as reversible crosslinks into the gel networks. The preparation conditions of the antigen‐responsive hydrogels and the mechanism of the antigen‐responsive behavior were investigated, focusing on bioconjugated hydrogel structures. This article also focuses on the effect of semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) structures on the antigen‐responsive swelling/shrinking behavior of bioconjugated hydrogels with antigen‐antibody bindings. The preparation conditions and the network structures of the bioconjugated hydrogels are discussed in relation to designing antigen‐responsive hydrogels. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(N‐vinyl‐pyrrolidone) (PVP) hydrogel has been considered as a very interesting and promising thermosensitive material. The most vital shortcoming of PVP hydrogel as thermosensitive material is that it does not exhibit thermosensitivity under usual conditions. In this work, semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) hydrogels based on PVP and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) were prepared. The volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) of the hydrogels was determined by swelling behavior and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results showed that the VPTT was significantly dependent on CMC content and the pH of the swelling medium. The amount of CMC in the semi‐IPN hydrogels was 0.050, 0.075, and 0.100 g, the VPTT in buffer solution of pH 1.2 was 29.9 °C, 27.5 °C and 24.5 °C, respectively. In addition, the VPTT occurred in buffer solution of pH 1.2, but did not appear in alkaline medium. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a model drug was loaded and the in vitro release studies were carried out in different buffer solutions and at different temperatures. The results of this study suggest that PVP/CMC semi‐IPN hydrogels could serve as potential candidates for protein drug delivery in the intestine. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The strategy for in situ chemical gelation of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐hydroxylethyl methacrylate) [P(NIPAAm‐co‐HEMA)]‐based polymers was demonstrated. Two types of new P(NIPAAm‐co‐HEMA) derivatives with alkyne and azide pendant groups, respectively, were prepared. When the solutions of the two derivatives were mixed together, a crosslinking reaction, a type of Huisgen's 1,3‐dipolar azide‐alkyne cycloaddition, in the presence of Cu(I) catalyst occurs. The morphology, equilibrium swelling ratio, swelling kinetics, and temperature response kinetics of the in situ gelated hydrogels were studied. In comparison with the conventional PNIPAAm hydrogel, because of the spatial hindrance of polymeric chains, the resulted hydrogels had a macroporous structure as well as a fast shrinking rate. The strategy described here presents a potential alternative to the traditional synthesis techniques for the in situ formation of thermoresponsive hydrogels. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Chelating poly(vinylpyrrolidone/acrylic acid) (PVP/AAc) copolymer hydrogels were prepared by radiation-induced copolymerization. The effects of preparation parameters such as PVP content in the hydrogel and irradiation dose on the swelling behavior of the hydrogel were studied. The pH dependent swelling was investigated. The thermal stability of the prepared hydrogel and the metal chelated ones was characterized by TGA. The removal of Fe(III), Cu(II), and Mn(II) from aqueous solution by the prepared PVP/AAc chelating hydrogel was examined by batch equilibration technique. The influence of treatment time, pH, and the initial feed concentration on the amount of the metal ions removed was studied. The results show that the removal of the metal ion followed the following order: Fe(III) > Cu(II) > Mn(II). The amounts of the removed metal ions increased with treatment time and pH of the medium. To re-use the hydrogel, the metal ions were stripped by using 2 N HCl.  相似文献

The solubility parameters of pure poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) and poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate/itaconic acid) [P(HEMA/IA)] hydrogels were determined by 20 solvents with various solubility parameters in swelling experiments. The solubility parameter of pure PHEMA was 26.93 ± 0.46 (MPa)1/2. The effect of mole percentages of itaconic acid (IA) in P(HEMA/IA) hydrogels on the solubility parameter was investigated. The measured values were compared to literature and solubility values theoretically determined by group contribution values of van Krevelen and Hoy. The incorporation of IA into the hydrogel system slightly increased the solubility parameter. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 40: 1995–2003, 2002  相似文献

Super water absorbent polymer hydrogels were synthesized by frontal polymerization. These materials were obtained by copolymerizing N‐isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAAm) and 3‐sulfopropyl acrylate potassium salt (SPAK) in the presence of N,N′‐methylene‐bis‐acrylamide as a crosslinker. It was found that their swelling behavior in water can be easily tuned by using either the appropriate monomer ratio or the amount of the crosslinker used. Namely, the swelling ratio was found to range from about 1000% for the NIPAAm homopolymer in the presence of 5.0 mol % of crosslinker, up to 35,000% for the sample containing 87.5 mol % of SPAK and 1.0 mol % of crosslinker. The affinity toward water was also confirmed by contact angle analysis. Moreover, the obtained hydrogels exhibit a thermoresponsive behavior, with a lower critical solution temperature of about 28–30 °C. This value is close to that of poly(NIPAAm) but with a swelling capability that dramatically increases as the amount of SPAK increases. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The temperature- and pH-sensitive hydrogels, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (P(NIPAM-co-AAc)), were synthesized via frontal polymerization (FP). The reaction components have been varied in order to find their influences on frontal parameters and copolymer features. The results showed that front velocity and front temperature were dependent on the initiator concentration, reactant dilution, and NIPMA/AAc molar ratio. In addition, the morphology and sensitive behavior of the FP hydrogels were mainly affected by monomers’ ratio. Namely, the pore size, swelling abilities, LCST, and response kinetics of copolymer hydrogels obviously increased with the increasing acrylic acid concentration; however, they slightly changed with varying of amounts of initiator and solvent. Finally, in comparison with the hydrogels prepared by conventional batch polymerization, the ones synthesized by frontal polymerization exhibited more homogeneous chain composition and improved microstructure and response ability.  相似文献
