While it is generally assumed that in the viscous flow regime, the two-phase flow relative permeabilities in fractured and porous media depend uniquely on the phase saturations, several studies have shown that for non-Darcian flows (i.e., where the inertial forces are not negligible compared with the viscous forces), the relative permeabilities not only depend on phase saturations but also on the flow regime. Experimental results on inertial single- and two-phase flows in two transparent replicas of real rough fractures are presented and modeled combining a generalization of the single-phase flow Darcy’s law with the apparent permeability concept. The experimental setup was designed to measure injected fluid flow rates, pressure drop within the fracture, and fluid saturation by image processing. For both fractures, single-phase flow experiments were modeled by means of the full cubic inertial law which allowed the determination of the intrinsic hydrodynamic parameters. Using these parameters, the apparent permeability of each fracture was calculated as a function of the Reynolds number, leading to an elegant means to compare the two fractures in terms of hydraulic behavior versus flow regime. Also, a method for determining the experimental transition flow rate between the weak inertia and the strong inertia flow regimes is proposed. Two-phase flow experiments consisted in measuring the pressure drop and the fluid saturation within the fractures, for various constant values of the liquid flow rate and for increasing values of the gas flow rate. Regardless of the explored flow regime, two-phase flow relative permeabilities were calculated as the ratio of the single phase flow pressure drop per unit length divided by the two-phase flow pressure drop per unit length, and were plotted versus the measured fluid saturation. Results confirm the dependence of the relative permeabilities on the flow regime. Also the proposed generalization of Darcy’s law shows that the relative permeabilities versus fluid saturation follow physical meaningful trends for different liquid and gas flow rates. The presented model fits correctly the liquid and gas experimental relative permeabilities as well as the fluid saturation.  相似文献

Dry-plug flow is a variation of two-phase plug flow that occurs in small scale channels and refers to the dry wall conditions at gas portions of the flow regime. Previous experimental studies found a significant increase in pressure drop in this flow regime from the two-phase wet-plug flow regime. In this work an analytical model for the pressure drop of this flow regime is developed and phenomena that influence pressure drop are examined. Unlike previous models, the proposed model seems to be applicable to a wide range of capillary numbers and give good estimations for all static contact angles. Contact angle hysteresis turned out to play a major role in inducing pressure drop in this flow regime. Model’s predictions were in good agreement with previous experimental data. Finally the model is applied to very low capillary number region and pressure drop predictions for this region are presented.  相似文献

The results of experimental studies of the conditions of loss of stability of the shape of a single dispersed-phase inclusion (droplet and bubble) during its motion in a viscous fluid at low Reynolds numbers are presented. It is shown that in the conditions considered the deformation of an initially spherical inclusion occurs due to the development of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability, as a critical value of the Bond number is attained. It is found that the onset of deformation of the phase interface and the instability mechanism depend strongly on the particle motion regime. A range of critical Reynolds numbers, corresponding to the boundaries of the regions of the Rayleigh-Taylor and Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities, is determined.  相似文献

A segmented two phase slug/bubble flow occurs where a liquid and a gas are pumped into the same tube over a range of Reynolds numbers. This segmented two phase flow regime is accompanied by an increase in pressure drop relative to the single phase flow where only one fluid is flowing in a capillary. This work experimentally and theoretically examines the pressure drop encountered by the slug/bubble flow with varying slug lengths in mini channels. In the experimental work the dimensionless parameters of Reynolds number and Capillary number span over three orders of magnitude, and dimensionless slug length ranges over two orders of magnitude to represent flows typical of mini- and micro-scale systems. It is found, in agreement with previous work, that these dimensionless groups provide the correct scaling to represent the pressure drop in two phase slug/bubble flow, although the additional pressure drop caused by the interface regions was found to be ∼40% less than previously reported.  相似文献

The literature pertinent to various aspects of drop evaporation on a heated surface is reviewed. Both the laser shadowgraphic and direct photographic methods are employed to study thermal stability and flow structures in evaporating drops in all heating regimes. It is revealed that four flow regions exist in stable and unstable type drops at low liquid-film type vaporization regime. As the surface temperature is raised, the flow regions reduce to two. In the nucleate-boiling type vaporization regime, the interfacial flow structure changes due to a reduction in the Marangoni number as well as the dielectric constant of the liquid. An evidence of bubble growth in the drops is disclosed. The micro explosion of drops is found to occur in the transition-boiling type heating range. No drop explosion takes place in the spheriodal vaporization regime except when the drop rolls on to a microscratch on the heating surface. It is concluded that the mechanisms for triggering drop explosion include the spontaneous nucleation and growth phenomena and the destabilization of film boiling.  相似文献

Dynamics and Breakup of Pulse Microjets of Polymeric Liquids   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The possibilities of controlling the dynamics and breakup of pulsed low-viscosity liquid microjets by means of small amounts of polymeric additives are considered. Significant differences between the breakup of pulse jets of Newtonian and viscoelastic polymeric liquids are recorded by means of high-speed photography. In flight a standard Newtonian fluid jet fragments into many secondary droplets. Depending on the molecular parameters, for a polymeric liquid three variants of the behavior of the jet in flight are possible: (1) the jet tail fragments into several secondary droplets; (2) the entire tail flows into the leading drop without loss and a single drop is formed; (3) the drop ejected from the nozzle returns to the nozzle under the action of elastic internal stresses in the tail. Criteria for the transition from one regime of jet motion to another are proposed.__________Translated from Izvestiya Rossiiskoi Academii Nauk, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 3, 2005, pp. 45–63.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by Bazilevskii, Meyer, and Rozhkov.  相似文献

Surface roughness can have a critical effect upon the splashing threshold and dynamics of a drop impacting on either a dry or rough solid surface or one coated by a thin fluid film. As most coating applications and spray systems quickly evolve to a state where the droplets impinge upon fluid deposited by preceding droplets, the combined contributions of surface roughness and a pre-deposited thin liquid film of comparable thickness upon droplet impingement dynamics are examined. For comparison, we include results for droplets impacting on a smooth, dry surface and a smooth surface wetted by a thin fluid film. The inclusion of surface roughness considerably lowers the splashing threshold and alters the splashing dynamics such that differences in fluid surface tensions between 20.1 and 72.8 dynes/cm or viscosities between 0.4 and 3.3 cP have little effect.  相似文献

A specific regime of liquid-drop breakup in the absence of pressure disturbances is considered. In contrast to the regimes studied earlier, this regime, realized when a drop crosses a sheet (a layer or jet) of gas moving in isobaric space, is called shockless drop breakup. Fragmentation occurs near a velocity contact discontinuity in the medium under the action of a gasdynamic impulse, whose duration is determined by the drop velocity and the dimensions of the discontinuity. When the impulse duration is close to the drop deformation time or the intrinsic-oscillation period, the drop response to the action of the external forces is not quasistatic. On the range of initial-pressure variation between 0.1 and 8 MPa, the criteria of onset of shockless breakup of ethanol and liquid-oxygen drops are established in the form of empirical relations for the critical Weber numbers. The coincidence of the critical conditions of realization of shockless drop breakup and the conditions of breakup induced by pressure disturbances is noted.  相似文献

The flow of two-dimensional drops on an inclined channel is studied by numerical simulations at finite Reynolds numbers. The effect of viscosity ratio on the behaviour of the two-phase medium is examined. The flow is driven by the acceleration due to gravity, and there is no pressure gradient along the flow direction. An implicit version of the finite difference/front-tracking method was developed and used in the present study. The lateral migration of a drop is studied first. It is found that the equilibrium position of a drop moves away from the channel floor as the viscosity ratio increases. However, the trend reverses beyond a certain viscosity ratio. Simulations with 40 drops in a relatively large channel show that there exists a limiting viscosity ratio where the drops behave like solid particles, and the effect of internal circulation of drops becomes negligible. This limiting condition resembles the granular flow regime except that the effect of interstitial fluid is present. The limiting viscosity ratio depends on the flow conditions (80 for \(Re=10\), and 200 for \(Re=20\)). There are two peaks in the areal fraction distribution of drops across the channel which is different from granular flow regime. It is also found that the peak in areal fraction distribution of drops moves away from the channel floor as the inclination angle of the channel increases.  相似文献

The effect of tube diameter on two-phase frictional pressure drop was investigated in circular tubes with inner diameters of 0.6, 1.2, 1.7, 2.6 and 3.4 mm using air and water. The gas and liquid superficial velocity ranges were 0.01-50 m/s and 0.01-3 m/s, respectively. The gas and liquid flow rates were measured and the two-phase flow pattern images were recorded using high-speed CMOS camera. Unique flow patterns were observed for smaller tube diameters. Pressure drop was measured and compared with various existing models such as homogeneous model and Lockhart-Martinelli model. It appears that the dominant effect of surface tension shrinking the flow stratification in the annular regime is important. It was found that existing models are inadequate in predicting the pressure drop for all the flow regimes visualized. Based on the analysis of present experimental frictional pressure drop data a correlation is proposed for predicting Chisholm parameter “C” in slug annular flow pattern. For all other flow regimes Chisholm’s original correlation appears to be adequate except the bubbly flow regime where homogeneous model works well. The modification results in overall mean deviation of pressure drop within 25% for all tube diameters considered. This approach of flow regime based modification of liquid gas interaction parameter appears to be the key to pressure drop prediction in narrow tubes.  相似文献

The stationary shapes of a conducting fluid drop in the gap between the plates of a plane capacitor are studied. The drop is held on the upper plate by the surface tension forces. The self-consistent problem of the determination of the drop shape and the charge distribution over its surface is solved. Estimates are obtained for the maximum volume of the stationary drop at the given fluid parameters and electric field strength.  相似文献

The current work focuses on the pressure drop, heat transfer and stability in two phase flow in microchannels with hydraulic diameter of less than one hundred microns. Experiments were conducted in smooth microchannels of hydraulic diameter of 45, 65 μm, and a rough microchannel of hydraulic diameter of 70 μm, with deionised water as the working fluid. The local saturation pressure and temperature vary substantially over the length of the channel. In order to correctly predict the local saturation temperature and subsequently the heat transfer characteristics, numerical techniques have been used in conjunction with the conventional two phase pressure drop models. The Lockhart–Martinelli (liquid–laminar, vapour–laminar) model is found to predict the two phase pressure drop data within 20%. The instability in two phase flow is quantified; it is found that microchannels of smaller hydraulic diameter have lesser instabilities as compared to their larger counterparts. The experiments also suggest that surface characteristics strongly affect flow stability in the two phase flow regime. The effect of hydraulic diameter and surface characteristics on the flow characteristics and stability in two phase flow is seldom reported, and is of considerable practical relevance.  相似文献

The deformation and breakup of a non-Newtonian slender drop in a Newtonian liquid in a simple extensional and creeping flow has been theoretically studied. The power-law was chosen for the fluid inside the drop, and the deformation of the drop is described by a single ordinary differential equation, which was numerically solved. Asymptotic analytical expressions for the local radius were derived near the center and close to the end of the drop. The results for the shape of the drop and the breakup criterion are presented as a function of the capillary number, the viscosity ratio and type of non-Newtonian fluid inside the drop. An approximate analytical solution is also suggested which is in good agreement with the numerical results.  相似文献

The flow field induced by the torsional oscillations of a spherical cell containing a fluid drop is examined. It has been found that in addition to the oscillating motion of each fluid particle there exist three standing vortices in every quadrant between the drop and the container. The steady streaming into the drop can be directed either clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on the values of the parameter of the fluids inside and outside the drop. Typical flow fields are shown graphically.  相似文献

Ya. B. Zel'dovich has established [1] that in a continuous-flow reactor two ignition regimes are possible: forced ignition and autoignition. It is important to consider the special properties of the autoignition regime associated with the hydromechanics of laminar flow and heat transfer through the pipe wall. In [2, 3] it was shown that the effect of heat of friction on heat transfer in long pipes is qualitative in character. Moreover, according to Schlichting [4], in certain cases the temperature gradient for such flows due to the heat of friction may reach 10–30°, which is comparable with the preexplosion temperature rise in the stationary theory of thermal explosion [5]. In this connection it is clear that under certain conditions the heat of friction may considerably reduce the explosion limit. This paper is devoted to a study of the effect of heat of friction on the explosion limit of a reacting fluid in a long cylindrical pipe. The dynamic autoignition regime due to heat of friction is examined. In particular, it is established that, other things being equal, by increasing the pressure drop it is possible to obtain explosion of the reacting system.  相似文献

Accurate information concerning riser inventory in a fluidized bed is required in some applications such as the calcium looping process, because it is related to the CO_2 capture efficiency of the system. In a circulating fluidized bed(CFB),the riser inventory is normally calculated from the riser pressure drop;however, the friction and the acceleration phenomena may have a significant influence on the total riser pressure drop. Therefore, deviation may occur in the calculation from the actual mass. For this reason the magnitude of the friction and the acceleration pressure drop in the entire riser is studied in small-scale risers. Two series of studies were performed:the first one in a scaled cold model riser of the 10 kW_(th)facility,and the second one in the 10kW_(th) fluidized bed riser under process conditions. The velocities were chosen to comply with the fluidization regimes suitable for the calcium looping process, namely, the turbulent and the fast.In cold-model experiments in a low-velocity turbulent fluidization regime, the actual weight(static pressure drop) of the particles is observed more than the weight calculated from a recorded pressure drop. This phenomenon is also repeated in pilot plant conditions. In the cold-model setup, the friction and acceleration pressure drop became apparent in the fast fluidization regime, and increased as the gas velocity rose.Within calcium looping conditions in the pilot plant operation, the static pressure drop was observed more than the recorded pressure drop. Therefore,as a conservative approach, the influence of friction pressure drop may be neglected while calculating the solid inventory of the riser. The concept of transit inventory is introduced as a fraction of total inventory, which lies in freefall zones of the CFB system. This fraction increases as gas velocity rises.  相似文献

The onset of convection and its nonlinear regimes in a heated from below two-layer system consisting of a horizontal pure fluid layer and porous medium saturated by the same fluid is studied under the conditions of static gravitational field. The problem is solved numerically by the finite-difference method. The competition between the long-wave and short-wave convective modes at various ratios of the porous layer to the fluid layer thicknesses is analyzed. The data on the nature of convective motion excitation and flow structure transformation are obtained for the range of the Rayleigh numbers up to quintuple supercriticality. It has been found that in the case of a thick porous layer the steady-state convective regime occurring after the establishment of the mechanical equilibrium becomes unstable and gives way to the oscillatory regime at some value of the Rayleigh number. As the Rayleigh number grows further the oscillatory regime of convection is again replaced by the steady-state convective regime.  相似文献

A three-field local projection stabilized (LPS) finite element method is developed for computations of a three-dimensional axisymmetric buoyancy driven liquid drop rising in a liquid column where one of the liquid is viscoelastic. The two-phase flow is described by the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, whereas the viscoelasticity is modeled by the Giesekus constitutive equation in a time-dependent domain. The arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation with finite elements is used to solve the governing equations in the time-dependent domain. Interface-resolved moving meshes in ALE allows to incorporate the interfacial tension force and jumps in the material parameters accurately. A one-level LPS based on an enriched approximation space and a discontinuous projection space is used to stabilize the numerical scheme. A comprehensive numerical investigation is performed for a Newtonian drop rising in a viscoelastic fluid column and a viscoelastic drop rising in a Newtonian fluid column. The influence of the viscosity ratio, Newtonian solvent ratio, Giesekus mobility factor, and the Eötvös number on the drop dynamics are analyzed. The numerical study shows that beyond a critical Capillary number, a Newtonian drop rising in a viscoelastic fluid column experiences an extended trailing edge with a cusp-like shape and also exhibits a negative wake phenomena. However, a viscoelastic drop rising in a Newtonian fluid column develops an indentation around the rear stagnation point with a dimpled shape.  相似文献

A study is made of the stability of the steady periodic regime that arises in a horizontal layer of fluid in the presence of spatial modulation of of the temperature on the solid bottom boundary. The upper free boundary of the layer is in contact with the atmosphere. The fundamental resonance values of the wave number of the modulation are found; there are five of them. If the temperature of the lower boundary of the layer is constant, and the temperature gradient is not too large, the fluid is in equilibrium. When the temperature gradient passes through the critical value, the equilibrium ceases to be stable, and steady convection develops in the fluid [1]. In the presence of spatial modulation of the temperature on the lower boundary of the layer the fluid cannot be in equilibrium, and a spatially periodic steady regime is established in it. The aim of the present paper is to find the critical values of the temperature gradient at which this fundamental steady regime becomes unstable and a secondary steady regime develops in the fluid. An analogous problem for the case when both boundaries of the layer are free surfaces and without allowance for the influence of the atmosphere has been solved by Vozovoi and Nepomnyashchii [2].  相似文献
