The role of an external magnetic field via the ion polarization drift effect has been investigated theoretically on the dust-Coulomb crystal formation in a dusty plasma in the presence of continuous ion flows from the bulk plasma to the sheath. The effects of the ions polarization drift on the strength and the effective lengths of the static Debye shielding potential and the oscillatory dynamical potential are clearly demonstrated.  相似文献

The theory of dynamical(wake) potential behind a moving test charge in a weakly coupled dusty plasma is extended to that including of strong interaction between dust grains. Such strong interaction is included in the dielectric response function by a generalized hydrodynamic(GH) fluid model. It is shown that the strong interaction between dusts including the lattice spacing correction has a significant effect on the wake potential in dusty plasma. This may be used to investigate basic features of phase transition and possibility of lattice formation of dusty plasma.  相似文献

The formation of the sheath in a dusty plasma is investigated. The Bohm criterion is derived for two different cases: (a) when electrons are in thermodynamic equilibrium and dust grains provide the immobile, stationary background and (b) when both electrons and ions are in thermodynamic equilibrium and dust grains are moving. In the first case, Bohm criterion gets modified due to the fluctuation of the charge on the grain surface. In the second case, the collisional and Coulombic drag play important role in determining the Bohm criterion.  相似文献

Dust molecules are observed in a dusty plasma experiment.By using measurements with high spatial resolution, the formation and dissociation of the dust molecules are studied. The ion cloud in the wake of an upper dust grain attracts the lower dust grain nearby. When the interparticle distance between the upper dust grain and the lower one is less than a critical value, the two dust grains would form a dust molecule. The upper dust grain always leads the lower one as they travel. When the interparticle distance between them is larger than the critical value, the dust molecule would dissociate.  相似文献

Using a test particle approach, the dynamical wake potential has been examined in a homogeneous self-gravitating dusty plasma. The periodic oscillatory potential might lead to an alternative approach to the Jeans instability for the formation of dust agglomeration leading to gravitational collapse of the self-gravitating systems.  相似文献

We employ the test charge approach to calculate the electrostatic potential for a test charge in a multicomponent dusty plasma, whose constituents are the Boltzmann distributed electrons, mobile positive and negative ions, and immobile positive/negative charged dust particles. By using the modified dielectric constant of the dust-ion-acoustic (DIA) waves, the Debye screening and wake potentials are obtained. It is found that the presence of mobile negative ions significantly modify the DIA speed and the wake potential. The present results are relevant to polar mesosphere and microelectronic in the context of charged particle attraction and repulsion.  相似文献

The three-dimensional structure of the wake potential due to ion cyclotron wave in a dusty magnetized plasma with streaming ions is studied. The analysis includes the E×B drift effect in addition to the ions flow with a constant velocity uio perpendicular to the magnetic field. The result shows that the magnitude of wake potential behind a dust grain is much increased for strongly magnetized plasma.  相似文献

The propagation of three-dimensional nonlinear dust-acoustic and dust-Coulomb waves in unmagnetized/magnetized dusty plasmas consisting of electrons, ions, and charged dust particles is investigated. The grain charge fluctuation effect is also incorporated through the current balance equation. By using the perturbation method, a Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation and a Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation governing the nonlinear waves in the unmagnetized and magnetized systems are obtained respectively. It has been shown that with the combined effects of grain charge fluctuation, the transverse perturbation, and the external magnetic field would modify the wave structures. Waves in those systems are unstable to the high-order long-wave perturbations.

We analyze the structure of the space electric charge that appears in the vicinity of a charged dust particle in a moving conductive medium. We show that when the conduction currents play a major role, the screening space charge is concentrated in the form of a thin wake behind the dust particle, while the total Coulomb field forms a dipole structure and serves as an attractive center for other particles with charges of the same sign. We consider the pairing conditions for such particles. Including the polarization contribution from the dust component to the permittivity radically changes the field structure when the dust particle concentration approaches the dissipative instability threshold. In this case, the zone of attraction of like-charged dust particles expands sharply. Estimates suggest that the effects under consideration can govern the formation of regular structures in a moving dusty plasma at fairly high pressures, P > 0.1–1 mbar.  相似文献

The radial distributions of ions, electrons and dust particles in the positive colum of glow discharges are investigated in a tripled-pole diffusion model. The dust particles are mainly trapped in the region around the column axis where the electrostatic potential is the highest. The presence of the dust particles results in the ion density increasing and the electron density decreasiung in the dust-trapped region. The dust-trapped region is wider for a higher dust temperature or a smaller particulate redius. The ions and electrons in the dust-free region away from the column axis are in ambipolar diffusion.  相似文献

Linearized electrostatic potential of a test charge in a complex (dusty) plasma with ion flow is found. Dust component is treated as a continuous medium. Positions of dust particles are assumed to be fixed (unperturbed by the test charge). Calculations are performed using the static dielectric response function found in the framework of the fluid model. The model includes ion loss and ion creation caused respectively by absorption on dust particles and ionization. Dust charge variations and friction force on ions (ion‐neutral and ion‐dust friction) are also present in the model. The main point of the paper is the potential distribution in the plane containing the test charge and oriented perpendicular to the ion flow. The possibility of the electrostatic attraction of two same sign charges in the plane perpendicular to the ion flow is investigated. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Various dust patterns are observed in an rf discharge dusty plasma system. According to the dust growth process from small to large in size, the formation of different dust patterns can be divided into two stages: the small-particle stage (or dust cloud stage), and the large-particle stage (or dust crystal stage). The evolution relations between different dust patterns with gas pressure changing are investigated. Dust voids, dust acoustic waves and strong turbulence modes are presented at the small-particle stage. The self-organized dust lattices and dust clusters are investigated at the large-particle stage. The static structure of a dust lattice is characterized by means of the pair correlation function. Dust clusters formed by particles with different numbers and the regular evolution of the clusters with gas pressure are also investigated. The packing sequences of dust clusters are verified through two-dimensional confined molecular dynamics simulations.  相似文献

Using the reductive perturbation method, we have derived the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation to study the nonlinear properties of electrostatic collisionless dust ion-acoustic solitons in the pair-ion (p-i) plasmas. We have chosen the fluid model for the positive ions, the negative ions, and a fraction of static charged (both positively and negatively) dust particles. Numerical solutions of these dust ion-acoustic solitons are plotted and their characteristics are discussed. It is found that only the amplitudes of the electrostatic dust ion-acoustic solitons vary when the dust is introduced in the pair-ion plasma. It is also noticed that the amplitude and the width of these solitons both vary when the thermal energy of the positive or negative ions is varied. It is shown that potential hump structures are formed when the temperature of the negative ions is higher than that of the positive ions, and potential dip structures are observed when the temperature of the positive ions supersedes that of the negative ions. As the pair-ion plasma mimics the electron-positron plasma, thus our results might be helpful in understanding the nonlinear dust ion acoustic solitary waves in super dense astronomical bodies.  相似文献

In this work, concept of virtual cathode and its existence in dusty plasma has been studied by theoretical and numerical analysis. Using basic equations of charge dust, ions, and electrons, the non‐monotonic behaviour of the potential in presence of charged dust has been calculated and plotted as a function of dust density. It has been found that there is a change in potential between cathode and sheath potential and subsequently changes the threshold wall temperature as compared to that of without dust conditions. The threshold wall temperature has been increased due to the ability of micro‐particles acquiring electron charge and hence, reducing potential at the wall. Further, for different values of α (depends on dust density); threshold temperature remained the same for observed virtual cathode. Hence, behaviour of potential has been plotted as a function of α with increasing wall temperatures for two dust charge values (1 and 1,000). Considering no dust charge, it has been observed that, at lower dust density, double layer like structure is formed near the emissive wall. But this double layer structure gets diminishes with increasing dust density. Hence, below a threshold dust density, virtual cathode near to the emissive wall is not possible. While for Zd = 1,000, the formation of virtual cathode appeared even at very small dust density. However, irrespective of variation of potential difference near the wall and existence of virtual cathode at different emission regime the threshold wall temperature remains same. Effect of dust potential dependency on threshold wall temperature has also been discussed in this study.  相似文献

A new concept called “configurational temperature” is introduced in the context of dusty plasma, where the temperature of the dust particles submerged in the plasma can be measured directly from the positional information of the individual dust particles and the interaction potential between the dust grains. This method does not require the velocity information of individual particles, which is a key parameter to measure the dust temperature in the conventional method. The technique is initially tested using two-dimensional (2D) OpenMP parallel molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulation and then compared with the temperature evaluated from experimental data. The experiment have been carried out in the Dusty Plasma Experimental (DPEx) device, where a 2D stationary plasma crystal of melamine formaldehyde particles is formed in the cathode sheath of a DC glow discharge argon plasma. The kinetic temperature of the dust is calculated using the standard particle image velocimetry technique at different pressures. An extended simulation result for the three-dimensional case is also presented, which can be employed for the temperature measurement of a three-dimensional dust crystal in laboratory devices.  相似文献

The nonlinear propagation of small amplitude dust‐acoustic (DA) solitary waves in magnetized dusty plasma consisting of negatively charged mobile dust fluid, and Boltzmann‐distributed electrons and ions with two distinct temperatures following a q‐nonextensive distribution are investigated. In this article, a number of nonlinear equations, namely, the Korteweg–de‐Vries (K‐dV) equations, have been derived by employing the reductive perturbation technique that is valid for a small but finite amplitude limit. The effects of nonextensivity of ions with two distinct temperatures and dust concentration on the amplitude and width of DA solitary waves are investigated theoretically. It is observed that both the nonextensive and low‐temperatures ions significantly modify the basic properties and polarities of DA solitary waves. It is shown that both positive and negative potential DA solitons occur in this case. The implications of these results to some astrophysical environments and space plasmas (e.g., stellar polytropes, peculiar velocity distributions of galaxies, and collisionless thermal plasma), and laboratory dusty plasma systems are briefly mentioned.  相似文献

Evolution of the spatial structure of the massive charged grains in the presence of weak linearly space-dependent external force in a dusty plasma is studied using molecular dynamics simulation. The interaction among the dust grains in the background electron-ion plasma is described by a modified Yukawa interaction potential that includes both repulsive and attractive ranges. Evolution of the initially homogeneously distributed dust grains is followed until a quasi-stationary state is reached. Even though the external force is radially highly asymmetric, the final configuration of the charged grains can be a circular crystal. Still driven by the external force, the grains in the crystal execute synchronized oscillations in the direction of the force. The time needed to reach the quasi-stationary state decreases with increase of the strength of the external force.  相似文献

We investigate instability of dust drift waves in a nonuniform dusty magnetoplasma containing transverse sheared plasma flow that is produced by a nonuniform electric field. By using Boltzmann distributed electrons and ions, Poisson’s equation, as well as the dust continuity equation with perpendicular guiding center dust drift speed, we derive an eigenvalue equation, which strongly depends on the profiles of dust sheared flow and dust density gradient. The eigenvalue equation is analytically solved to obtain expressions for the growth rate and threshold of a convective instability arising from resonant interactions between the dust drift waves and sheared flows. The result may be relevant to the understanding of short wavelength (in comparison with the ion gyroradius) electrostatic fluctuations in magnetized plasmas of Saturn rings and in cometary tails.
