Proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have been widely used commercially to solve the energy crisis and environmental pollution. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode is the rate-determining step in PEMFCs. Platinum (Pt) catalysts are used to accelerate the ORR kinetics. Pt's scarcity, high cost, and instability in an acidic environment at high potentials seriously hinder the commercialization of PEMFCs. Therefore, studies should explore electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity, enhanced stability, and low-Pt loading. This review briefly introduces the research progress on Pt and Pt-based ORR electrocatalysts for PEMFCs, including anticorrosion catalyst supports, Pt, and Pt-based alloy electrocatalysts. Advanced preparation technology and material characterization of Pt-based ORR electrocatalysts are necessary to improve the performance and corresponding reaction mechanisms.  相似文献

Oxygen electrocatalysts are of great importance for the air electrode in zinc–air batteries (ZABs). Owing to large surface area, high electrical conductivity and ease of modification, two-dimensional (2D) materials have been widely studied as oxygen electrocatalysts for the rechargable ZABs. The elaborately modified 2D materials-based electrocatalysts, usually exhibit excellent performance toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which have attracted extensive interests of worldwide researchers. Given the rapid development of bifunctional electrocatalysts toward ORR and OER, the latest progress of non-noble electrocatalysts based on layered double hydroxides (LDHs), graphene, and MXenes are intensively reviewed. The discussion ranges from fundamental structure, synthesis, electrocatalytic performance of these catalysts, as well as their applications in the rechargeable ZABs. Finally, the challenges and outlook are provided for further advancing the commercialization of rechargeable ZABs.  相似文献

Electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) present some of the most challenging vulnerability issues reducing ORR performance and shortening their practical lifetime. Fuel crossover resistance, selective activity, and catalytic stability of ORR catalysts are still to be addressed. Here, a facile and in situ template‐free synthesis of Pt‐containing mesoporous nitrogen‐doped carbon composites (Pt‐m‐N‐C) is designed and specifically developed to overcome its drawback as an electrocatalyst for ORR, while its high activity is sustained. The as‐prepared Pt‐m‐N‐C catalyst exhibits high electrocatalytic activity, dominant four‐electron oxygen reduction pathway, superior stability, fuel crossover resistance, and selective activity to a commercial Pt/C catalyst in 0.1 m KOH aqueous solution. Such excellent performance benefits from in situ covalent incorporation of Pt nanoparticles with optimal size into N‐doped carbon support, dense active catalytic sites on surface, excellent electrical contacts between the catalytic sites and the electron‐conducting host, and a favorable mesoporous structure for the stabilization of the Pt nanoparticles by pore confinement and diffusion of oxygen molecules.  相似文献

As a cathode reaction in fuel cells, oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) plays a critical role in determining the overall performance of a fuel cell. It is still a big challenge to find effective ways to improve the catalytic activity, efficiency, and especially stability of ORR electrocatalysts. In the present study, single nanoparticle electrocatalysis for ORR is realized for the first time by encaging PtPd nanocube in hollow and porous carbon nanosphere (PtPd@HCS). Through tuning the carbon‐shell thickness by carbonization temperature, the effects of carbon‐shell thickness on ORR catalytic performance of PtPd@HCS are systematically investigated. The PtPd@HCS calcinated at 800 °C (PtPd@HCS‐800) with the thinnest carbon shell (3.52 nm) and rich pore structure exhibits enhanced ORR catalytic activity and stability. The strategy mentioned here is expected to provide a new method to design single nanoparticle electrocatalysts for fuel cells with high catalytic performance and reduced loading of precious metals.  相似文献

Morphologies and structures of M-N-C catalysts are the key factor for controlling the formation of catalytic active sites, which are directly connected with the electrocatalytic activities for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). By combining different metal sources (metal-free, Co, and Fe) with polyaniline (PANI) and para-phenylenediamine functionalized GO (PGO), morphologies and structures are tuned to accelerate the ORR activity. Compared with metal-free catalyst, metal-containing catalysts show better ORR performance because of the possible synergistic effect between metal and N atoms. In particular, the improved ORR activity of Fe-PANI-PGO catalyst is obtained by rotating disc electrode (RDE) at 1600 rpm in 0.1 M KOH electrolyte. The Fe-PANI-PGO electrocatalyst has the enhanced half-wave potential of 0.89 V and the high stability with only decreasing 7 mV of half-wave potential after 10,000 cycles, implying increased number and strengthened structures of active sites. Combined with various means of characterization, advantageous morphologies and structures including large electrochemically active surface area, high graphitization degree, and thick carbon structure with more pyridinic nitrogen boned with metal atoms can greatly enhance the ORR activity and stability of the catalyst.

Mixed oxides composed of Zn-Sn, Ti-Sn and V-Sn were prepared by a co-precipitation method and evaluated as catalysts for methanol oxidation in an ambient fixed-bed reactor. Surface analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed an electronic interaction between dopant and Sn atoms in the oxide structure and showed the formation of surface states associated with the dopants. Oxygen vacancies were present on the Zn-doped oxide, and the oxidation of methanol to carbon oxides was favored. The Ti-doped oxide exhibited a favorable selectivity to dimethyl ether, related to the oxygen anions near Ti centers. Vanadium dopants not only dramatically increased the catalytic activity but also promoted the partial oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde. Results demonstrate that the bridging dopant-O-Sn bond acts as active sites and influences product distribution.  相似文献

Transition metal compounds anchored on N-doped carbon (NC) show intrinsic activity and stability for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the interaction between the transition metal compounds and NC still needs to be strengthened for electron transfer at the compounds/carbon interface. Herein, Fe/Fe3C hybrid nanoparticles encapsulated into N-doped carbon (Fe@NC) are used as high-performance ORR catalysts. Benefiting from the strong interaction at Fe/Fe3C nanoparticles/NC interface, the electrons can transfer from Fe/Fe3C hybrid nanoparticles to NC, redistributing the electron density of active sites and promoting the ORR process. The as-synthesized Fe@NC exhibits outstanding ORR catalytic activity with an onset potential of 1.01 V and a half-wave potential of 0.92 V in alkaline media. It also shows prominent cycling stability and tolerance to methanol crossover, superior to Pt/C catalyst. The theoretical analysis reveals that the Fe nanoparticles have regulated the electron distributions at the heterojunction interface. The Gibbs free energy diagrams for ORR illustrate that the rate-determining step is the conversion of OH* to OH. In situ Raman spectra give evidence of O-containing intermediates to prove the ORR process.  相似文献

It is very important to exploit low‐cost and efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts for the development of renewable‐energy conversion and storage techniques. Although much attention has been made to develop efficient catalysts for ORR and OER, it is still highly desired to create new bifunctional catalysts. In this study, Co3O4 hollow polyhedrons are synthesized as efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for ORR and OER by simple one‐step annealing Co‐centered metal–organic frameworks (ZIF‐67). Due to the large specific surface areas and high porosity, the as‐prepared Co3O4 hollow polyhedrons exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activities for ORR and OER in alkaline media. Co3O4 hollow polyhedrons show higher peak current density (0.61 mA cm?2) with four‐electron pathway than Co3O4 particles (0.39 mA cm?2), better methanol tolerance and superior durability (82.6%) than commercial Pt/C electrocatalyst (58.6%) for ORR after 25 000 s. In addition, Co3O4 hollow polyhedrons also display excellent OER performances with smaller overpotential (536 mV) for 10 mA cm?2 than Co3O4 particles (593 mV) and superior stability (86.5%) after 25 000 s. This facile one‐step strategy based on metal–organic frameworks self‐sacrificed templates can be used to develop the promising well‐defined porous hollow metal oxides electrode materials for energy conversion and storage technologies.  相似文献

By minimizing the free energy while constraining dopant density, we derive a universal curve that relates the formation energy (E(form)) of doping and the efficiency of defect passivation in terms of segregation of dopants at defect sites. The universal curve takes the simple form of a Fermi-Dirac distribution. Our imposed constraint defines a chemical potential that assumes the role of "Fermi energy," which sets the thermodynamic limit on the E(form) required to overcome the effect of entropy such that dopant segregation at defects in semiconductors can occur. Using Si edge dislocation as an example, we show by first-principles calculations how to map the experimentally measurable passivation efficiency to our calculated E(form) by using the universal curve for typical n- and p-type substitutional dopants. We show that n-type dopants are ineffective. Among p-type dopants, B can satisfy the thermodynamic limit while improving electronic properties.  相似文献

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is an important reaction in many energy conversion systems, but it is severely restricted by its slow kinetics. Developing efficient non‐noble‐metal catalysts for ORR has attracted extended interests, but still remains a great challenge. Herein, an efficient catalysts consisting of Co3O4@Co nanoparticles embedded in N‐rich mesoporous carbon matrix is developed by the carbonization of Co‐containing zeolitic imidazolate framework precursor. The derived matrix exhibits outstanding catalytic activity with onset potential of 0.97 V vs. RHE, half‐wave potential of 0.88 V vs. RHE, and good catalytic durability when tested with the rotation speed of 1600 rpm. Carbinization under NH3 introduces extra elemental N, which subsequently enhances the limiting current densities. This study provides insight into the rational design of highly active ORR catalysts.  相似文献

Efficient carbon-based nitrogen-doped electrocatalysts derived from waste biomass are regarded as a promising alternative to noble metal catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which is crucial to fuel cell performance. Here, coconut palm leaves are employed as the carbon source and a series of nitrogen-doped porous carbons were prepared by virtue of a facile and mild ultrasound-assisted method. The obtained carbon material (ANDC-900-10) conveys excellent pH-universal catalytic activity with onset potentials (Eonset) of 1.01, 0.91 and 0.84 V vs. RHE, half-wave potentials (E1/2) of 0.87, 0.74 and 0.66 V vs. RHE and limiting current densities (JL) of 5.50, 5.45 and 4.97 mA cm−2 in alkaline, neutral and acidic electrolytes, respectively, prevailing over the commercial Pt/C catalyst and, what's more, ANDC-900-10 displays preeminent methanol crossover resistance and long-term stability in the broad pH range (0–13), thanks to its abundant hierarchical nanopores as well as effective nitrogen doping with high-density pyridinic-N and graphitic-N. This work provides sonochemical insight for underpinning the eco-friendly approach to rationally designing versatile metal-free carbon-based catalysts toward the ORR at various pH levels.  相似文献

Pt-transition metal alloy catalysts with an active Pt surface have exceptional properties for use in oxygen electro-reduction reactions in fuel cells. Herein, we report the simple synthesis of dealloyed PtCu catalysts and their catalytic performance in oxygen reduction. The dealloyed PtCu catalysts consisted of a Pt-enriched shell with a Pt–Cu alloy core and were synthesized through a chemical co-reduction process followed by thermal annealing and chemical dealloying. During synthesis, thermal annealing leads to a high degree of formation of PtCu alloy particles (e.g., PtCu or PtCu3), and chemical dealloying causes selective dissolution of unstable Cu species from the surface layers of the PtCu alloy particles, resulting in a PtCu alloy@Pt-enriched surface core–shell configuration. Our PtCu3/C catalyst exhibits a great improvement in the oxygen reduction reaction with a mass activity of 0.501 A/mgPt, which is 2.24 times greater than that of a commercial Pt catalyst. In this article, the synthesis details, characteristics and performance improvements in ORR of chemically dealloyed PtCu catalysts are systemically explained.  相似文献

In this study, carbon supported Pt and Pt-Pd were synthesized as oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalysts for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Pt and Pt-Pd nanoparticles have been synthesized by reduction of metal precursors in presence of NaBH4. Various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were utilized to study the prepared samples. Furthermore, electrochemical properties of the prepared samples were evaluated from cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), chronoamperometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results showed, the crystallite size of electrocatalysts (Pt and Pt-Pd) is below 10 nm. The higher catalytic activity was detected for Pt-Pd/C electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In addition, it is believed that the better performance of electrocatalyst is related to the synergic effect between Pt and Pd nanoparticles, weakening of the OO bond on Pd-modified Pt nanoparticles in ORR, uniform dispersion of Pd and Pt on the carbon support and higher electrochemical active surface area (EAS) of Pt-Pd/C electrocatalyst.  相似文献

Commercially available multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been functionalized with poly(diallyl dimethylammonium) chloride (PDDA), a nitrogen containing polyelectrolyte by a simple on-off ultrasonication method. The results obtained from Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies confirm the functionalization of MWCNTs with PDDA. An up- shift in the positions of C1s XPS peak and a down-shift in the positions of the N1s XPS peak, has been observed along with an up-shift in the G-peak position in the Raman spectra, which suggest the occurrence of inter-molecular charge transfer from carbon atoms in MWCNTs to N+ centres in PDDA. The preliminary linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) results show good electrocatalytic activity of MWCNTs functionalized with nitrogen containing polyelectrolyte, which is comparable to the results with platinum based electrodes. Thus, MWCNTs non-covalently functionalized with a nitrogen containing polyelectrolyte (PDDA) by a simple on-off ultrasonication method could be advantageous for developing efficient metal-free electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR).  相似文献

Bifunctional electrocatalysts to enable efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are essential for fabricating high performance metal–air batteries and fuel cells. Here, a defect rich nitrogen and sulfur co-doped graphene/iron carbide (NS-GR/Fe3C) nanocomposite as an electrocatalyst for ORR and OER is demonstrated. An ink of NS-GR/Fe3C is developed by homogeneously dispersing the catalyst in a Nafion containing solvent mixture using an ultrasonication bath (Model-DC150H; power − 150 W; frequency − 40 kHz). The ultrasonically prepared ink is used for preparing the electrode for electrochemical studies. In the case of ORR, the positive half-wave potential displayed by NS-GR/Fe3C is 0.859 V (vs. RHE) and for the OER, onset potential is 1.489 V (vs. RHE) with enhanced current density. The optimized NS–GR/Fe3C electrode exhibited excellent ORR/OER bifunctional activities, high methanol tolerance and excellent long-term cycling stability in an alkaline medium. The observed onset potential for NS–GR/Fe3C electrocatalyst is comparable with the commercial noble metal catalyst, thereby revealing one of the best low-cost alternative air–cathode catalysts for the energy conversion and storage application.  相似文献

Pt3Ni stands as one of the most active electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The activity varies with the morphology of the nanocrystals with a high activity observed for the octahedral shape where only the high density {111} crystallographic planes are exposed. Herein, the synthesis of 6 nm Pt3Ni octahedral nanocrystals with a Pt enriched shell or cuboctahedral nanocrystals with a Ni enriched shell is described. Interestingly, the cuboctahedral nanocrystals display a six-pointed star/skeleton of platinum, which features a very uncommon atomic distribution. In the synthesis, a decrease in the oxygen partial pressure induces the transition from octahedral to cuboctahedral morphology. The octahedral and cuboctahedral nanocrystals both demonstrate high ORR activity (1.1 mA cm−2Pt and 1.2 A mg−1Pt at 0.9 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) are the highest values obtained for PtNi-20 and PtNi-15, respectively). After exposure to oxidative conditions in the acidic electrolyte, the cuboctahedral nanoparticles with a pristine Ni-rich skin show a Pt skin and retain their cuboctahedral morphology.  相似文献

We have studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) the atomic-scale realm of molybdenum disulfide ( MoS2) nanoclusters, which are of interest as a model system in hydrodesulfurization catalysis. The STM gives the first real space images of the shape and edge structure of single-layer MoS2 nanoparticles synthesized on Au(111), and establishes a new picture of the active edge sites of the nanoclusters. The results demonstrate a way to get detailed atomic-scale information on catalysts in general.  相似文献

For the alkaline fuel cell cathode reaction, it is very essential to develop novel catalysts with superior catalytic properties. Here, we report the synthesis of highly active and stable MoS2/Pd composites for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), via a simple, eco-friendly sonochemical method. The bulk MoS2 was first transformed into single and few layers MoS2 nanosheets through ultrasonic exfoliation. Then the exfoliated MoS2 nanosheets served as supporting materials for the nucleation and further in-situ growth of Pd nanoparticles to form MoS2/Pd composites via ultrasonic irradiation. Cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk voltammetry measurements demonstrate that as-prepared MoS2/Pd composites which provides a direct four-electron pathway for the ORR, have better electrocatalytic activity, long-term operation stability than commercial Pt/C catalyst. We expect that the present work would provide a promising strategy for the development of efficient oxygen reduction electrocatalyst. In addition, this study can also be extended to the preparation of other hybrid with desirable morphologies and functions.  相似文献

We have successfully devised a simple method to synthesize La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 with nitrogen-doped graphene composites (LSM/NrGO) and investigated their catalytic performance in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Interestingly, the LSM/NrGO composites demonstrate outstanding catalytic performance in ORR, including high limiting current density and superior onset potential, compared to bare LSM nanocrystals or nitrogen-doped graphene, showing a performance close to that of commercial Pt/C. Moreover, Li-O2 batteries assembled based on the LSM/NrGO catalysts exhibited brilliant performance, especially during long-term cycling, where the terminal discharge voltage still exceeded 2.31 V after 360 cycles. The excellent catalytic performance is mainly attributed to the large specific surface area (152.24 m2 g?1) of the materials, which provides many catalytic active sites, and the mesoporous structure (2 to 50 nm), which can facilitate the penetration of oxygen molecules into the surface of the nanoparticles and mass transfer.  相似文献
