The recrystallization behavior of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) on the highly oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) substrates at temperatures below the melting temperature of HDPE has been investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy. The results obtained by the bright-field observation and the electron diffraction show that upon annealing the HDPE-quenched films on the oriented iPP substrates at temperatures below 125°C, only a small amount of HDPE recrystallizes on the iPP substrate with [001]HDPE//[001]iPP, while annealing the HDPE-quenched films at temperatures above 125°C, all of the HDPE crystallites recrystallize epitaxially on the iPP substrate with [001]HDPE//[101]iPP. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Diffraction patterns of oriented blends of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and polyethylene (PE) published recently by several authors are analyzed on the basis of a unique epitaxial relationship between the iPP and PE crystal lattices. The contact planes are (100)PE and (010)iPP, and the PE chains lie at 50° to the iPP chain axis, parallel to the helical path of the iPP helices, which is formed by rows of side-group methyls.  相似文献

The annealing behavior of amorphous i-PMMA thin films on highly oriented HDPE substrates was studied by transmission infrared spectroscopy and electron diffraction. The i-PMMA thin film on highly oriented HDPE exhibits a much faster crystallization rate than usual, providing not only a good method for the preparation of crystalline i-PMMA thin and ultrathin film, but also the convenience to observe the crystallization process by infrared spectroscopy in situ. The overall crystallization kinetics of the i-PMMA thin film on the highly oriented HDPE layer was also explored in this work, and an Avrami exponent of about 2 was obtained. The accelerated crystallization behavior indicates a special interaction between HDPE and i-PMMA, which favors the nucleation and crystallization of i-PMMA. This special interaction leads also to an oriented alignment of i-PMMA on the HDPE substrate with both polymer chains parallel, i.e., the occurrence of heteroepitaxy, which could be verified by the polarized infrared spectra and electron diffraction pattern. Electron diffraction analysis further demonstrated that the contact planes of this epitaxial system are (100) lattice planes of both polymers. This can be explained in terms of a two-dimensional lattice matching.

In this work, as a part of a long‐term project aimed at controlling of crystal structure and phase morphology for a injection molded product, we investigated the oriented structure and possible epitaxial growth of polyolefin blend (low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE)/isotatic polypropylene (iPP)), achieved by dynamic packing injection molding, which introduced strong oscillatory shear on the gradually‐cooled melt during the packing process. The crystalline and oriented structures of the prepared blends with different compositions were estimated in detail through 2D X‐ray diffraction, calorimetry, and optical microscopy. As iPP was the dominant phase (its content was more than 50 wt%), our results indicated that it could be highly oriented in the blends. In such case, it was interesting to find that LLDPE epitaxially crystallized on the oriented iPP through a crystallographic matching between (100)LLDPE and (010)iPP, resulting in an inclination of LLDPE chains, about 50° to the iPP chain axis. On the other hand, as iPP was the minor phase, iPP was less oriented and no epitaxial growth between iPP and LLDPE was observed; even LLDPE remained oriented. The composition‐dependent epitaxial growth of LLDPE on oriented iPP could be understood as due to: (1) the effect of crystallization sequence, it was found that iPP always crystallized before LLDPE for all compositions; (2) the dependence of oriented iPP structure on the blend composition; (3) the “mutual nucleation” between LLDPE and iPP due to their partial miscibility. The β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) and γ‐cyclodextrin (γ‐CD) inclusion compounds (ICs) with two different molecular weight isotactic polypropylene (iPP) were prepared. The ICs with high molecular weight iPP as guest molecule had lower inclusion rate. The crystallization behavior of iPP blended with the CDs and ICs was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and light scattering. The iPP blended with the ICs was found to exhibit higher crystallization temperature (TC), smaller spherulites, and faster crystallization rate than those of neat iPP. These results indicate that the ICs play a role of nucleating agent on the crystallization of iPP and induce the accelerated crystallization. Both β‐CD‐iPP ICs and γ‐CD‐iPP ICs with longer iPP molecular chains had better nucleation effect than the ICs with shorter iPP molecular chains. This suggested that the nucleation effect of these ICs was affected by the inclusion rate of ICs. The lower inclusion rate could result in better nucleation effect, due to the interaction of extended iPP molecules inside the CD cavity and iPP molecules in the matrix. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nucleating agents with an ≈6.5 Å lattice parameter induced the α phase of isotactic polypropylene (iPP, α‐iPP). A 6.5 Å periodicity is also involved in the nucleating agents for the β phase of iPP (β‐iPP). The similarity in substrate periodicities suggests that some nucleating agents may induce either the α or β phase under different crystallization conditions. 4‐Fluorobenzoic acid, dicyclohexylterephthalamide, and γ‐quinacridone (the latter two are known as β‐iPP nucleators) were tested over a wide range of crystallization temperatures [up to crystallization temperature (Tc) > 145 °C]. The two former nucleating agents induce exclusively α‐iPP and β‐iPP, respectively. γ‐Quinacridone on the contrary is a versatile agent with respect to the crystal phase generated. More specifically, the same crystal face of γ‐quinacridone induces either β‐iPP or α‐iPP when Tc is below or above ≈140 °C. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The epitaxial crystallization behavior of high-density polyethylene on the boundary of highly oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) substrates has been investigated by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results obtained from AFM and TEM indicate that the epitaxial nucleation of HDPE on the highly oriented iPP substrates occurs earlier than that in the pure HDPE phase, i.e., homogeneous nucleation. Therefore the epitaxially grown HDPE lamellae can grow across the boundary of the iPP substrate into the HDPE spherulitic phase with the epitaxial orientation relationship remaining.  相似文献

Isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was crystallized from solution on a uniaxially-oriented iPP film. Small-angle x-ray scattering patterns obtained from the sample showed two perpendicularly crossed lameliae 9.3 nm thick that overgrew flat-on and edge-on on the substrate. In the through wide-angel x-ray diffraction pattern (taken with incident x-rays normal to the iPP film surface), strong hkO reflections were arranged in an hkO net pattern indicating that the a-axis of the monoclinic α unit cell was oriented parallel to the chain direction of the substrate. From this, it was concluded that the flat-on lamellae grew with the a-axis parallel to the chain axis of the substrate and with the b-axis parallel to its surface. In the edge wide-angle x-ray diffraction pattern (X-rays incident on the edge of the film), arced, strong 110 and 220 reflections from overgrown crystals were observed on the equator of the fiber pattern of the substrate. This indicated that the edge-on lamellae epitaxially grew with the c-axis aligned parallel to the chain axis of the substrate. The homoepitaxy explains the correlated growth mode between the orthogonally crossed lamellae: they grew epitaxially, the a-axis of one lamella coinciding with the c-axis of the other and the {010} planes in contact. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

This article describes the oriented crystallization of poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) in uniaxially oriented blends with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). Uniaxially drawn films of PLLA/PVDF blend with fixed ends were heat‐treated in two ways to crystallize PLLA in oriented blend films. The crystal orientation of PLLA depended upon the heat‐treatment process. The crystal c‐axis of the α form crystal of PLLA was highly oriented in the drawing direction in a sample cold‐crystallized at Tc = 120 °C, whereas the tilt‐orientation of the [200]/ [110] axes of PLLA was induced in the sample crystallized at Tc = 120 °C after preheating at Tp = 164.5–168.5 °C. Detailed analysis of the wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) indicated that the [020]/ [310] crystal axes were oriented parallel to the drawing direction, which causes the tilt‐orientation of the [200]/ [110] axes and other crystal axes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) suggested that oriented crystallization occurs in the stretched domains of PLLA with diameters of 0.5–2.0 μm in the uniaxially drawn films of PVDF/PLLA = 90/10 blend. Although the mechanism for the oriented crystallization of PLLA was not clear, a possibility was heteroepitaxy of the [200]/[110] axes of the α form crystal of PLLA along the [201]/[111] axes of the β form crystal of PVDF that is induced by lattice matching of d100(PLLA) ≈ 5d201(PVDF). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The morphological structure and crystallization behavior of in situ poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/isotactic polypropylene (iPP) microparts prepared through micro‐injection molding are investigated using a polarized light microscope, differential scanning calorimeter, scanning electron microscope, and two‐dimensional wide‐angle X‐ray. Results indicate that both the shear effect and addition of PET fibers greatly influence the morphologies of the iPP matrix. Typical “skin‐core” and oriented crystalline structures (shish‐kebab) may simultaneously be observed in neat iPP and iPP/PET microparts. The presence of PET phases reveals significant nucleation ability for iPP crystallization. High concentrations of PET phases, especially long PET fibers, correspond to rapid crystallization of the iPP matrix. The occurrence of PET microfibrils decreases the content and size of β‐crystals; by contrast, the orientation degree of β‐crystals increases with increasing PET content in the microparts. This result suggests that the existence of the microfibrillar network can retain the ordered clusters and promote the development of oriented crystalline structures to some extent. Crystallization studies at quiescent and shear states in isotactic polypropylene (iPP) containing nanostructured polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) molecules were performed with in situ small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). DSC was used to characterize the quiescent crystallization behavior. It was observed that the addition of POSS molecules increased the crystallization rate of iPP under both isothermal and nonisothermal conditions, which suggests that POSS crystals act as nucleating agents. Furthermore, the crystallization rate was significantly reduced at a POSS concentration of 30 wt %, which suggests a retarded growth mechanism due to the molecular dispersion of POSS in the matrix. In situ SAXS was used to study the behavior of shear‐induced crystallization at temperatures of 140, 145, and 150 °C in samples with POSS concentrations of 10, 20, and 30 wt %. The SAXS patterns showed scattering maxima along the shear direction, which corresponded to a lamellar structure developed perpendicularly to the flow direction. The crystallization half‐time was calculated from the total scattered intensity of the SAXS image. The oriented fraction, defined as the fraction of scattered intensity from the oriented component to the total scattered intensity, was also calculated. The addition of POSS significantly increased the crystallization rate during shear compared with the rate for the neat polymer without POSS. We postulate that although POSS crystals have a limited role in shear‐induced crystallization, molecularly dispersed POSS molecules behave as weak crosslinkers in polymer melts and increase the relaxation time of iPP chains after shear. Therefore, the overall orientation of the polymer chains is improved and a faster crystallization rate is obtained with the addition of POSS. Moreover, higher POSS concentrations resulted in faster crystallization rates during shear. The addition of POSS decreased the average long‐period value of crystallized iPP after shear, which indicates that iPP nuclei are probably initiated in large numbers near molecularly dispersed POSS molecules. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The effect of CO2 on the nonisothermal crystallization of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was studied with high‐pressure differential scanning calorimetry at cooling rates of 0.2–5 °C/min. CO2 significantly delayed the melt crystallization of iPP, and both the crystallization temperature and the heat of crystallization decreased with increasing CO2 pressure. The crystallization rate of iPP, as characterized by the half‐time, was also prolonged by the presence of CO2. With a modified Ozawa model developed by Seo, the Avrami crystallization exponent n of iPP was calculated. This value was depressed by the addition of CO2 and was strongly dependent on the CO2 pressure at low cooling rates. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Based on coordination polymerization mechanism only, novel stereoregular graft copolymers with syndiotactic polystyrene main chain and isotactic polypropylene side chain (sPS‐g‐iPP) were synthesized via two steps of catalytic reactions. First, a chain transfer reaction was initiated by a chain transfer complex composed of a styrene derivative, 1,2‐bis(4‐vinylphenyl)ethane, and hydrogen in propylene polymerization mediated by rac‐Me2Si[2‐Me‐4‐Ph(Ind)]2ZrCl2 and MAO, which gave iPP macromonomer bearing a terminal styryl group (iPP‐t‐St). Then the iPP‐t‐St macromonomers of varied molecular mass were engaged in syndiospecific styrene polymerization over a typical mono‐titanocene catalyst (CpTiCl3/MAO) under different conditions to produce sPS‐g‐iPP graft copolymers of varied structure. With an effective purification process, well‐defined sPS‐g‐iPP copolymers were obtained, which were then subjected to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical micrograph (POM) studies. The graft copolymers were generally found with dual melting and crystallization temperatures, which were ascribable respectively to the sPS backbone and iPP graft. However, it was revealed that the two segments displayed largely different melting and crystallization behaviors than sPS homopolymer and the precursory iPP‐t‐St macromonomer. Consequently, the graft copolymer exhibited much distinctive crystalline morphologies when compared with their individual components. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The mechanism of adhesion at semicrystalline polymer interfaces between isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and linear low‐density polyethylene (PE) was studied with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and an asymmetric‐double‐cantilever‐beam test. From the TEM images, both the interfacial width and the lamellar thickness of the polymers were extracted. During annealing, the interfacial width increased with the annealing temperature, and this indicated the accumulation of amorphous polymers at the interface. The interfacial strength, determined from the critical fracture energy (Gc), also increased with the annealing temperature and reached a maximum above the melting temperatures of iPP and PE, whereas the smallest Gc value was obtained below the melting temperatures of the two materials. A mechanism of interfacial strengthening was proposed accounting for the competition between the interdiffusion of PE and crystallization of iPP. As the annealing temperature increased, the rates of PE diffusion and iPP crystallization increased. Although the crystallization of iPP hindered the interdiffusion of PE, both the interfacial width and the fracture energy increased with the temperature, and this indicated that PE interdiffusion dominated iPP crystallization. Below the critical temperature, the fracture surfaces of both iPP and PE were smooth, and chain pullout dominated the fracture mechanism. Above the critical temperature, iPP crystallization still hindered the interdiffusion, and crazes could be seen on the iPP side. Above the melting temperatures of the two materials, ruptured surfaces could also be seen on the PE side, and crazing was the fracture mechanism. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of organo‐modified clay (Cloisite 93A) on the crystal structure and isothermal crystallization behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) in iPP/clay nanocomposites prepared by latex technology was investigated by wide angle X‐ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. The X‐ray diffraction results indicated that the higher clay loading promotes the formation of the β‐phase crystallites, as evidenced by the appearance of a new peak corresponding to the (300) reflection of β‐iPP. Analysis of the isothermal crystallization showed that the PP nanocomposite (1% C93A) exhibited higher crystallization rates than the neat PP. The unfilled iPP matrix and nanocomposites clearly shows double melting behavior; the shape of the melting transition progressively changes toward single melting with increasing crystallization temperature. The fold surface free energy (σe) of polymer chains in the nanocomposites was lower than that in the PP latex (PPL). It should be reasonable to treat C93A as a good nucleating agent for the crystallization of PPL, which plays a determinant effect on the reduction in σe during the isothermal crystallization of the nanocomposites. The activation energy, ΔEa, decreased with the incorporation of clay nanoparticles into the matrix, which in turn indicates that the nucleation process is facilitated by the presence of clay. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: Shear‐induced crystallization in a blend of isotactic poly(propylene) and poly(ethylene‐co‐octene) (iPP/PEOc) has been investigated by means of in‐situ optical microscopy and a shear hot stage under various thermal and shear histories. Cylindrites are observed after shear in the phase‐separated iPP/PEOc blends for the first time. The nuclei (shish) come from the orientation of the entangled network chains, and the relationship between the shear rate and the network relaxation time of the oriented iPP chains is a very important factor that dominates the formation of the cylindrites after liquid‐liquid phase separation. The cylindrites can grow through phase‐separated domains with proper shear rate and shear time. In addition, the number of spherulites increases with shear rate, which is consistent with the notion of fluctuation‐induced nucleation/crystallization.

Phase‐contrast optical micrograph of the iPP/PEOc = 50/50 (wt.‐%) sample sheared during cooling with shear rate of 10 s−1 and isothermally crystallized at 140 °C for 142 s after isothermal annealing at 170 °C for 420 min. The shear time is 180 s.  相似文献

Combined in situ rheo-SAXS (small-angle X-ray scattering) and -WAXD (wide-angle X-ray diffraction) studies using couette flow geometry were carried out to probe thermal stabilty of shear-induced oriented precursor structure in isotactic polypropylene (iPP) at around its normal melting point (162 °C). Although SAXS results corroborated the emerging consensus about the formation of “long-living” metastable mesomorphic precursor structures in sheared iPP melts, these are the first quantitative measures of the limiting temperature at which no oriented structures survive. At the applied shear, rate = 60 s−1 and duration ts = 5 s, the oriented iPP structures survived a temperature of 185 °C for 1 h after shear, while no stable structures were detected at and above 195 °C. Following Keller's concepts of chain orientation in flow, it is proposed that the chains with highly oriented high molecular weight fraction are primarily responsible for their stability at high temperatures. Furthermore, the effects of flow condition, specifically the shear temperature, on the distributions of oriented and unoriented crystals were determined from rheo-WAXD results. As expected, at a constant flow intensity (i.e., rate = 30 s−1 and duration, ts = 5 s), the oriented crystal fraction decreased with the increase in temperature above 155 °C, below which the oriented fraction decreased with the decrease in temperature. As a result, a crystallinty “phase” diagram, i.e., temperature versus crystal fraction ratio, exhibited a peculiar “hourglass” shape, similar to that found in many two-phase polymer–polymer blends. This can be explained by the competition between the oriented and unoriented crystals in the available crystallizable species. Below the shear temperature (155 °C), the unoriented crystals crystallized so rapidly that they overwhelmed the crystallization of the oriented crystals, thus depleting a major portion of the crystallizable species and increasing their contribution in the final total crystalline phase. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Compared with the most stable crystalline form of isotactic polypropylene (α‐iPP), β‐iPP shows superior impact strength and high temperature performance, though the mechanism of how the frustrated structure of β‐iPP is formed still remains unclear. In present work, the single crystal structure of a traditional β‐iPP nucleating agent, N,N′‐dicyclohexylterephthalamide (DCHT), was obtained for the first time and correlated with the epitaxial crystallization of β‐iPP on the surface of DCHT crystal. The combination of synchrotron radiation X‐ray microdiffraction and molecular chain packing model confirmed that a two dimensional match of chain‐axis and inter‐chain direction coexists between β‐iPP (110) plane and DCHT (001) plane. It was further found that an epitaxial model is helpful to understand the formation of the frustrated structure of 31 helices packing in β‐iPP. The molecular mechanics computation showed that as the (001) plane of DCHT is fixed, the packing mode of β‐iPP (110) plane on the substrate surface is more stable than that of α‐iPP (010) plane. This work clarifies the epitaxial crystallization mechanism of β‐iPP on DCHT by employing both experimental and computational evidences. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym.
