An experimental study of the behavior of one bead bouncing repeatedly off a static flat horizontal surface is presented. We observe that the number of bounces made by the bead is finite. When the duration between two successive bounces becomes of the order of the impact duration, the bead no longer bounces but oscillates on the elastically deformed surface before coming to rest. This transition is explained with a modified Hertz interaction law in which gravity is taken into account during the interaction. For each bounce, measurement of both the duration of collision and the restitution coefficient have been done. The effective restitution coefficient is essentially constant and close to 1 during almost all bounces before decreasing to zero when the impact velocity vanishes. In horizontally shaken granular material different types of pattern formation have been reported. We want to deal with the convection instability which has been observed in experiments and which recently has been investigated numerically. Using two dimensional molecular dynamics we show that the convection pattern depends crucially on the inelastic properties of the material. The concept of restitution coefficient provides arguments for the change of the behaviour with varying inelasticity. Received 3 March 1999  相似文献

An experimental study of the collision of a column of N beads () with a fixed wall is presented. For a fixed height of fall and a rigid wall, we show that the maximum force felt by the wall is independent of the number of beads N. The duration of impact, the velocity of the deformation wave in the column and an effective restitution coefficient of the column are also measured as a function of N. For a soft wall, we show that the maximum force depends on N. A non-dissipative numerical model, based on a nonlinear interaction law between nearest neighbours, gives results in agreement with the experimental data. Moreover, we show that, after the compression phase, the beads of the top of the column separate one after the other from the column with a velocity greater than the initial one. The beads at the bottom then bounce upwards in block, with a velocity smaller than the initial one. We emphasize that this detachment effect results from the energy redistribution within the whole system during the collision and not from any dissipative effect. We consider a planar interface between strongly-segregated homopolymers subjected to steady shear in the plane of the interface. We develop a constitutive equation for stress relaxation in an inhomogeneous system for chains obeying Rouse dynamics. Using this equation, the interfacial viscosity for a symmetric blend is found to be in agreement with a scaling prediction due to de Gennes, where is the bead friction coefficient, b is the segment length, is the segment volume and is the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter driving the phase separation. We generalize our results to asymmetric blends and describe a phenomenological extension to entangled melts. On the basis of a macroscopic ground state population it was argued recently that Bose-Einstein condensation should occur in a one-dimensional harmonic potential. We examine this situation by drawing analogies to bosons in a two-dimensional box, where the thermodynamic limit is well-defined. We show that in both systems although the ground state populations show sharp onsets at the critical temperature, the behaviour of the specific heat is analytic, which proves the absence of a phase transition in these systems. We introduce the model of inelastic hard spheres with random restitution coefficient α, in order to account for the fact that, in a vertically shaken granular system interacting elastically with the vibrating boundary, the energy injected vertically is transferred to the horizontal degrees of freedom through collisions only, which leads to heating through collisions, i.e. to inelastic horizontal collisions with an effective restitution coefficient that can be larger than 1. This allows the system to reach a non-equilibrium steady state, where we focus, in particular, on the single-particle velocity distribution f (v) in the horizontal plane, and on its deviation from a Maxwellian. Molecular Dynamics simulations and Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) show that, depending on the distribution of α, different shapes of f (v) can be obtained, with very different high-energy tails. Moreover, the fourth cumulant of the velocity distribution quantifying the deviations from Gaussian statistics is obtained analytically from the Boltzmann equation and successfully tested against the simulations. We examine the behaviour of the concentration profiles of particles with repulsive interactions diffusing on a host lattice. At low temperature, the diffusion process is strongly influenced by the presence of ordered domains. We use mean field equations and Monte-Carlo simulations to describe the various effects which influence the kinetic behaviour. An effective diffusion coefficient is determined analytically and is compared with the simulations. Finite gradient effects on the ordered domains and on the diffusion are discussed. The kinetics studied is relevant for superionic conductors, for intercalation and also for the diffusion of particles adsorbed on a substrate. The recirculation flow induced by the rising motion of a bubble stream in a viscous fluid within an open-top rectangular enclosure is studied. The three-dimensional volume averaged conservation equations are solved by a control-volume method using a hybrid finite differencing scheme to describe the liquid phase hydrodynamics. The momentum exhange between the bubbles and the liquid phase is modeled with a source term equals to the volumetric buoyancy force acting on the gas in the bubble stream. The volumetric buoyancy force accounts for in line interactions between bubbles through the average gas volume fraction in the gas liquid column which depends on the size and the rising velocity of bubbles. The fluid flow within an open-top rectangular enclosure is further investigated by particle image velocimetry for a bubble stream rising in a water-glycerol solution. The measured fluid velocities in a vertical plane are compared with the predictions of the numerical model over a wide range of fluid viscosity (43 mPa s-800 mPa s) and gas flow rates. Finally, the recirculation flows resulting from the interaction of two neighbouring vertical bubble streams are studied. For fermionic model systems with a separable interaction the BCS equations are solved self-consistently. In addition, the possibility of a liquid-gas phase transition is considered by inspecting thermodynamic stability. Different examples of temperature-density phase diagrams are given depending on the parameters of a model interaction. We present a detailed derivation of the Gutzwiller approximation for multi-band Hubbard models with density-density Coulomb interactions. For the one-band Hubbard model we introduce a mathematically well-defined formalism which is easily generalized to the multi-band case. The size and shape of silver nanoparticles which are embedded in a plasma-polymer matrix were obtained by transmission electron microscopy and analyzed with optical image processing. We used a sample in which silver particles were present before and after reshaping caused by thermal annealing in adjacent regions. As most of the particles appeared as elongated rotational ellipsoids, the major and minor half axis were determined for each particle. We adopted the model of Gans in the Rayleigh approximation to calculate for each investigated particle the extinction spectra from to using the data from the image processing. The various spectra for 368 silver particles were added to get total extinction spectra for the sample as deposited and after reshaping, respectively. We found good agreement with the experimental spectra. The blue shift of the plasma-resonance absorption, which occurs due to the reshaping of the silver particles during thermal annealing, was also confirmed by using only changes in the particle sizes and shapes. We calculate the photon emission of a high finesse cavity moving in vacuum. The cavity is treated as an open system. The field initially in the vacuum state accumulates a dephasing depending on the mirrors motion when bouncing back and forth inside the cavity. The dephasing is not linearized in our calculation, so that qualitatively new effects like pulse shaping in the time domain and frequency up-conversion in the spectrum are found. Furthermore we predict the existence of a threshold above which the system should show self-sustained oscillations. A new model for correlated electrons is presented which is integrable in one-dimension. The symmetry algebra of the model is the Lie superalgebra gl(2|1) which depends on a continuous free parameter. This symmetry algebra contains the pairing algebra as a subalgebra which is used to show that the model exhibits Off-Diagonal Long-Range Order in any number of dimensions. The continuous emission of gas bubbles from a single ejection orifice immersed in a viscous fluid is considered. We first present a semi empirical model of spherical bubble growth under constant flow conditions to predict the bubble volume at the detachment stage. In a second part, we propose a physical model to describe the rise velocity of in-line interacting bubbles and we derive an expression for the net viscous force acting on the surrounding fluid. Experimental results for air/water-glycerol systems are presented for a wide range of fluid viscosity and compared with theoretical predictions. An imagery technique was used to determine the bubble size and rise velocity. The effects of fluid viscosity, gas flow rate, orifice diameter and liquid depth on the bubble stream dynamic were analyzed. We have further studied the effect of large scale recirculation flow and the influence of a neighbouring bubble stream on the bubble growth and rising velocity. We call attention against what seems to be a widely held misconception according to which large crashes are the largest events of distributions of price variations with fat tails. We demonstrate on the Dow Jones Industrial Average that with high probability the three largest crashes in this century are outliers. This result supports the suggestion that large crashes result from specific amplification processes that might lead to observable pre-cursory signatures. We have studied the nucleation of bubbles in pure superfluid helium-4 at temperatures down to 65 mK. We have found that the nucleation is a stochastic process, and that at temperatures below 600 mK the nucleation rate is independent of temperature. These results are consistent with the assumption that the nucleation takes place via quantum tunneling. We consider biological evolution as described within the Bak and Sneppen 1993 model. We exhibit, at the self-organized critical state, a power-law sensitivity to the initial conditions, calculate the associated exponent, and relate it to the recently introduced nonextensive thermostatistics. The scenario which here emerges without tuning strongly reminds of that of the tuned onset of chaos in say logistic-like one-dimensional maps. We also calculate the dynamical exponent z. We present series of experiments on the resistance force encountered by a bottom piston pushing a vertical granular column confined in a two-dimensional cell. We show that, due to the presence of friction at the boundaries and between the grains, the signal shows many complex features. At slow driving velocities, we observe a transition to a stick-slip dynamic instability. Depending on the granular material used, the elementary stick-slip events may either be well characterized or largely distributed. We present a statistical study on the waiting time between events and the distribution of energy release as a function of the spring stiffness and the driving velocity. For two particles in a disordered chain of length L with on-site interaction U, a duality transformation maps the behavior at weak interaction onto the behavior at strong interaction. Around the fixed point of this transformation, the interaction yields a maximum mixing of the one body states. When (the one particle localization length), this mixing results in weak chaos accompanied by multifractal wave functions and critical spectral statistics, as in the one particle problem at the mobility edge or in certain pseudo-integrable billiards. In one dimension, a local interaction can only yield this weak chaos but can never drive the two particle system to full chaos with Wigner-Dyson statistics.
