Biorthogonal Rational Functions and the Generalized Eigenvalue Problem

We present some general results concerning so-called biorthogonal polynomials of R_II type introduced by M. Ismail and D. Masson. These polynomials give rise to a pair of rational functions which are biorthogonal with respect to a linear functional. It is shown that these rational functions naturally appear as eigenvectors of the generalized eigenvalue problem for two arbitrary tri-diagonal matrices. We study spectral transformations of these functions leading to a rational modification of the linear functional. An analogue of the Christoffel–Darboux formula is obtained.     

Newton's Method for a Generalized Inverse Eigenvalue Problem

A kind of generalized inverse eigenvalue problem is proposed which includes the additive, multiplicative and classical inverse eigenvalue problems as special cases. Newton's method is applied, and a local convergence analysis is given for both the distinct and the multiple eigenvalue cases. When the multiple eigenvalues are present we show how to state the problem so that it is not over-determined, and discuss a Newton-method for the modified problem. We also prove that the modified method retains quadratic convergence, and present some numerical experiments to illustrate our results. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Eigenvalue Characterization and Computation for the Laplacian on General 2-D Domains

In this paper, we address the problem of determining and efficiently computing an approximation to the eigenvalues of the negative Laplacian ? ? on a general domain Ω ? ?² subject to homogeneous Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. The basic idea is to look for eigenfunctions as the superposition of generalized eigenfunctions of the corresponding free space operator, in the spirit of the classical method of particular solutions (MPS). The main novelties of the proposed approach are the possibility of targeting each eigenvalue independently without the need for extensive scanning of the positive real axis and the use of small matrices. This is made possible by iterative inclusion of more basis functions in the expansions and a projection idea that transforms the minimization problem associated with MPS and its variants into a relatively simple zero-finding problem, even for expansions with very few basis functions.     

Perturbation Analysis for the Eigenvalue Problem of a Formal Product of Matrices

We study the perturbation theory for the eigenvalue problem of a formal matrix product A ₁ ^{s 1} ··· A _p ^{s p}, where all A _k are square and s _k {–1, 1}. We generalize the classical perturbation results for matrices and matrix pencils to perturbation results for generalized deflating subspaces and eigenvalues of such formal matrix products. As an application we then extend the structured perturbation theory for the eigenvalue problem of Hamiltonian matrices to Hamiltonian/skew-Hamiltonian pencils.     

On the Eigenvalue Problem for Self–Adjoint Operators with Singular Perturbations

We investigate the eigenvalue problem for self–adjoint operators with singular perturbations. The general results presented here include weakly as well as strongly singular cases. We illustrate these results on two models which correspond to so–called additive strongly singular perturbations.

一类幂零群上的特征值问题及估计

本文对幂零Lie群H_n×R^k上的Laplace算子,利用酉表示理论证明了它在全空间上无特征值存在,通过推广Friedrichs方法证明了在有界域上存在一列离散特征值,最后通过建立不变向量场之间的关系给出了特征值之差的估计.     

分裂系数椭圆组特征值问题

作者利用向量函数的截断及线性化技巧在局部椭圆条件下证明了一类分裂系数拟线性椭圆特征问题广义解的存在性。     

一类非线性四阶椭圆型方程的极值原理及其特征值问题

主要应用 Hopf极值原理 ,对一类非线性四阶椭圆型方程Δ2 u +h( x,u,Δu) =0进行研究 ,得到解的泛函的极值原理 .类似的文章结果也有许多 ,其方法均为构造适当的“P-泛函”,但是以前的结果都对方程有较强的要求限制 .本文通过构造新的泛函 ,减弱了要求限制 .同时对方程Δ2 u +λh( x,u,Δu) =0的特征值给出了估计 .     

Extrapolation of Mixed Finite Element Approximations for the Maxwell Eigenvalue Problem

In this paper,a general method to derive asymptotic error expansion formulas for the mixed finite element approximations of the Maxwell eigenvalue problem is established.Abstract lemmas for the error of the eigenvalue approximations are obtained.Based on the asymptotic error expansion formulas,the Richardson extrapolation method is employed to improve the accuracy of the approximations for the eigenvalues of the Maxwell system from θ(h2) to θ(h4) when applying the lowest order Nédé1ec mixed finite element and a nonconforming mixed finite element.To our best knowledge,this is the first superconvergence result of the Maxwell eigenvalue problem by the extrapolation of the mixed finite element approximation.Numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the theoretical results.     

解Stokes特征值问题的一种两水平稳定化有限元方法

基于局部Gauss积分,研究了解Stokes特征值问题的一种两水平稳定化有限元方法．该方法涉及在网格步长为H的粗网格上解一个Stokes特征值问题,在网格步长为h=O(H2)的细网格上解一个Stokes问题．这样使其能够仍旧保持最优的逼近精度,求得的解和一般的稳定化有限元解具有相同的收敛阶,即直接在网格步长为h的细网格上解一个Stokes特征值问题．因此,该方法能够节省大量的计算时间．数值试验验证了理论结果．     

Multiplicity Results for an Eigenvalue Problem for Hemivariational Inequalities in Strip-Like Domains

In this paper we study the multiplicity of solutions for a class of eigenvalue problems for hemivariational inequalities in strip-like domains. The first result is based on a recent abstract theorem of Marano and Motreanu, obtaining at least three distinct, axially symmetric solutions for certain eigenvalues. In the second result, a version of the fountain theorem of Bartsch which involves the nonsmooth Cerami compactness condition, provides not only infinitely many axially symmetric solutions but also axially nonsymmetric solutions in certain dimensions. Numerical Computation of Figure-eight Solution for 3-body Problems

The main goal of this paper is to compute the Figure-eight solutions for the planar Newtonian 3-body problem with equal masses by finding the critical points of the functional associated with the motion equations of 3-body in plane R2. The algorithm adopted here is the steepest descent method, which is simple but very valid for our problem.

Approximation of an Eigenvalue Problem Associated with the Stokes Problem by the Stream Function-Vorticity-Pressure Method

By means of eigenvalue error expansion and integral expansion techniques, we propose and analyze the stream function-vorticity-pressure method for the eigenvalue problem associated with the Stokes equations on the unit square. We obtain an optimal order of convergence for eigenvalues and eigenfuctions. Furthermore, for the bilinear finite element space, we derive asymptotic expansions of the eigenvalue error, an efficient extrapolation and an a posteriori error estimate for the eigenvalue.
