Results on the multiplicity structure of diffractively excited meson and proton systems in À+/K+ p interactions at 250 GeV/c are presented for diffractive masses up to about 9 GeV. The energy dependence of the average charge multiplicity and the shape of the multiplicity distribution in terms of KNO-scaling and negative binomial distribution are investigated. The diffractive systems are compared toe + e ,lh and non-diffractivehh final states as suggested by modern approaches of the Pomeron-hadron collision. Systematic differences are found between diffractive meson and proton systems but also between diffraction and the reactions compared to.  相似文献

A model is considered for the diffractive component of particle production with anisotropically decaying fireballs. Application of this model to recent data on diffractive proton production gives favourable results. For these data the fragmentation model with isotropically decaying fireballs cannot account. The behaviour of inclusive single particle, two-particle and multiplicity distributions are studied.  相似文献

We report results from a study of events with a double-Pomeron exchange topology produced in p p collisions at sqrt[s]=1800 GeV. The events are characterized by a leading antiproton and a large rapidity gap on the outgoing proton side. We find that the differential production cross section agrees in shape with predictions based on Regge theory and factorization, and that the ratio of double-Pomeron exchange to single diffractive production rates is relatively unsuppressed as compared to the O(10) suppression factor previously measured in single diffractive production.  相似文献

Final results from combined measurements of single and double diffraction of protons neutrons into (Nπ) and (Nππ) final states are presented. The experiments were performed at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings with the Split Field Magnet detector using proton and deuteron colliding beams. The general properties of the dissociating vertex in single and double diffractive reactions are essentially identical. Mass spectra and decay angular distributions are compared with the predictions of a dual resonant Deck model. Decay angular correlations and a strong slope-mass correlation are observed also in double diffraction. Detailed tests of factorization indicate its validity over the full range of all kinematical variables and in their correlations.A model-independent analysis gives strong support to the peripheral nature of diffraction dissociation, with double diffraction being concentrated in a narrow gaussian ring at the edge of the proton. Both the exclusive and the inclusive double diffractive cross sections display a marked increase over the ISR energy range. Both mechanisms yield comparable contributions to the peripheral increase of the total pp cross section, with an approximate saturation of the Pumplin bound.  相似文献

The hadronic production of charm particle pairs produced in the forward direction has been investigated in study of μ+μ? pairs with large missing energy (indicative of final-state neutrinos). These events result primarily from two semileptonic decays of charm-anticharm states. A comparison of the data with the prediction of the intrinsic charm diffractive model indicates that diffractive production cross sections are small (of the order of a few μb) in both 350 GeV proton and 278 GeV pion interactions.  相似文献

Measurements are presented of diffractive open charm production at HERA. The event topology is given by ep→eXY where the system X contains at least one charmed hadron and is well separated by a large rapidity gap from a leading low-mass proton remnant system Y. Two analysis techniques are used for the cross section measurements. In the first, the charm quark is tagged by the reconstruction of a D(2010) meson. This technique is used in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) and photoproduction (γp). In the second, a method based on the displacement of tracks from the primary vertex is used to measure the open charm contribution to the inclusive diffractive cross section in DIS. The measurements are compared with next-to-leading order QCD predictions based on diffractive parton density functions previously obtained from a QCD analysis of the inclusive diffractive cross section at H1. A good agreement is observed in the full kinematic regime, which supports the validity of QCD factorization for open charm production in diffractive DIS and γp.  相似文献

Data on diffractive photoproduction of isoscalar states appear to be anomalously large in a number of channels. Isoscalar diffractive photoproduction is studied in a model in which the pomeron is approximated by two gluons, and in which gluon intermediate states are allowed in the pomeron-meson interaction. It is shown that the model allows a resolution of the long-standing problem of the small (in vector meson dominance terms) diffractive θ photoproduction cross section. This sets the scale for the calculation, and it is then demonstrated that the model can explain the large isoscalar cross section if it is due primarily to the diffractive photoproduction of a system of gluons.  相似文献

We calculate the cross section of diffractive charge-parity neutral meson production in virtual photon proton collision at high energies. Due to the opposite -parities of photon and meson () this process probes the -channel odderon exchange which is described here as noninteracting three–gluon exchange. Estimates for the cross section of inelastic diffractive process are presented. The total cross section of diffractive meson photoproduction is found to be 47 pb. The cross sections for the diffractive production of light mesons () in collisions are of the same order if the photon virtuality is . Received: 30 July 1997  相似文献

We present predictions for exclusive photoproduction of a meson on proton at large transfer, where we use a quark–diquark structure model for the proton. Extrapolation from our results to lower transfers is comparable in magnitude with available data in that range. This may support the diquark model in its ability to provide, for that process, an appropriate link between diffractive physics at low transfer and the standard semiperturbative approach of hard exclusive processes at very large transfer, in which the proton recovers its three-quark structure. A measurement is presented of dijet and 3-jet cross sections in low- diffractive deep-inelastic scattering interactions of the type , where the system X is separated by a large rapidity gap from a low-mass baryonic system Y. Data taken with the H1 detector at HERA, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 18.0 pb, are used to measure hadron level single and double differential cross sections for and . The energy flow not attributed to jets is also investigated. The measurements are consistent with a factorising diffractive exchange with trajectory intercept close to 1.2 and tightly constrain the dominating diffractive gluon distribution. Viewed in terms of the diffractive scattering of partonic fluctuations of the photon, the data require the dominance of over states. Soft colour neutralisation models in their present form cannot simultaneously reproduce the shapes and the normalisations of the differential cross sections. Models based on 2-gluon exchange are able to reproduce the shapes of the cross sections at low values. Received: 21 December 2000 / Published online: 6 April 2001  相似文献

The excitation of the proton into undetected multiparticle states (double diffraction dissociation) is an important background to single diffractive deep-inelastic processes epMe'p'A0,r e'p'J/O,r e'p'X at HERA. We present estimates of the admixture of the double diffraction dissociation events in all diffractive events. We find that in the J/O photoproduction, electroproduction of the A0 at large Q2 and diffraction dissociation of real and virtual photons into high mass states X the contamination of the double diffraction dissociation can be as large as ~30%, thus affecting substantially the experimental tests of the pomeron exchange in deep inelastic scattering at HERA. We discuss a possibility of tagging the double diffraction dissociation by neutrons observed in the forward neutron calorimeter. We present evaluations of the spectra of neutrons and efficiency of neutron tagging based on the experimental data for diffractive processes in the proton-proton collisions.  相似文献

The multiplicity structure of the hadronic system X produced in deep-inelastic processes at HERA of the type , where Y is a hadronic system with mass GeV and where the squared momentum transfer at the pY vertex, t, is limited to , is studied as a function of the invariant mass of the system X. Results are presented on multiplicity distributions and multiplicity moments, rapidity spectra and forward-backward correlations in the centre-of-mass system of X. The data are compared to results in annihilation, fixed-target lepton-nucleon collisions, hadro-produced diffractive final states and to non-diffractive hadron-hadron collisions. The comparison suggests a production mechanism of virtual photon dissociation which involves a mixture of partonic states and a significant gluon content. The data are well described by a model, based on a QCD-Regge analysis of the diffractive structure function, which assumes a large hard gluonic component of the colourless exchange at low . A model with soft colour interactions is also successful. Received: 27 April 1998 / Published online: 3 September 1998  相似文献

Properties of proton diffractive dissociation have been investigated for four-prong final states in proton-proton reactions at 360 GeV/c, in particular forppppπ +π? 0(m=0,1,2). Mass distributions and decay angular distributions are given. The decay of the diffractive system is seen to be very anisotropic, and largep T is suppressed at higher masses. It is found that the “pomeron” couples with a single valence quark of the incident proton, but indications for a diquark-pomeron coupling are also found. Similarities with fragmentation in lepton-hadron deep inelastic scattering are underlined.  相似文献

The model-dependence of the relation between the inelastic and various minimum-bias proton-proton cross sections is analyzed, paying a special attention to the sensitivity of minimum-bias triggers to diffractive collisions. Concentrating on the trigger selections of the ATLAS experiment, the measured cross sections are compared to predictions of a number of hadronic Monte Carlo models used in the cosmic ray field. It is demonstrated that the ATLAS results are able to discriminate between different models and between certain theoretical approaches for soft multi-particle production. On the other hand, the strong model-dependence of the selection efficiency of the minimum-bias triggers prevents one from inferring high mass diffraction rate from the discussed data. Moreover, the measured cross sections prove to be insensitive to the production of low mass diffractive states in proton-proton collisions. Consequently, a reliable determination of the total inelastic cross section requires forward proton tracking by a dedicated experiment.  相似文献

We report the first observation of dijet events with a double Pomeron exchange topology produced in &pmacr;p collisions at sqrt[s] = 1800 GeV. The events are characterized by a leading antiproton, two jets in the central pseudorapidity region, and a large rapidity gap on the outgoing proton side. We present results on jet kinematics and production rates, compare them with corresponding results from single diffractive and inclusive dijet production, and test factorization.  相似文献

Results of the HERA experiments HERMES, HI and ZEUS obtained in 1997 are presented. They cover recent measurements on the proton structure functionF 2, the extraction of the gluon density, which is compared with open charm production, diffractive scattering and results on the proton spin structure. We further give an update on the NC events at very highQ 2 and report on an observation of events with an isolated lepton and missingp t.  相似文献

We emphasize the importance of tagging the outgoing forward protons to sharpen the predictions for New Physics at the LHC (such as the diffractive production of a light Higgs boson). The rescattering effects lead to a rich distinctive structure of the cross section as a function of the transverse momenta of the protons. We show that a study of the correlations between the proton transverse momenta for double-diffractive production of central dijets will provide a detailed check of the whole diffractive formalism. Adopting a perturbative two-gluon structure of the Pomeron, we emphasize that quarkonium production, via Pomeron-Pomeron fusion, is strongly suppressed. This offers a favourable production mechanism for non- states, such as glueballs. Received: 15 March 2002 / Published online: 21 June 2002  相似文献
