Statistical extensions of some classical Tauberian theorems

Hardy's well-known Tauberian theorem for Cesàro means says that if the sequence satisfies and , then . In this paper it is shown that the hypothesis can be replaced by the weaker assumption of the statistical limit: st-lim , i.e., for every , . Similarly, the ``one-sided' Tauberian theorem of Landau and Schmidt's Tauberian theorem for the Abel method are extended by replacing and with st-lim and st-lim , respectively. The Hardy-Littlewood Tauberian theorem for Borel summability is also extended by replacing , where is a continuous parameter, with , and further replacing it by -st-lim , where is the Borel matrix method.

     

On Burgess's theorem and related problems

Let be a graph. We determine all graphs which are -like. We also prove that if are graphs, then in order that each -like continuum be -indecomposable for some it is necessary and sufficient that if is a graph, then is not -like for some integer with . This generalizes a well known theorem of Burgess.

     

Open subgroups of

Let be a locally compact group and let denote the -algebra generated by left translation operators on . Let and be the spaces of almost periodic and weakly almost periodic functionals on the Fourier algebra , respectively. It is shown that if contains an open abelian subgroup, then (1) if and only if is norm dense in ; (2) is a -algebra if is norm dense in , where denotes the set of elements in with compact support. In particular, for any amenable locally compact group which contains an open abelian subgroup, has the dual Bohr approximation property and is a -algebra.

     

Injective resolutions of Noetherian rings and cogenerators

We give new construction of injective resolutions of complexes and bimodules. Applying this construction to an injective resolution of a Noetherian ring, we construct a -embedding cogenerator for the category of modules of projective dimension . Moreover, for a Noetherian projective -algebra , we show that satisfies the Auslander condition if and only if the flat dimension of every -module is equal to or larger than the one of the injective hull .

     

Multiple symmetric positive solutions for a second order boundary value problem

For the second order boundary value problem, , , , where growth conditions are imposed on which yield the existence of at least three symmetric positive solutions.

     

Relations between the Taylor spectrum and the Xia spectrum

Let be a doubly commuting -tuple of -hyponormal operators with unitary operators from the polar decompositions . Let and . In this paper, we will show relations between the Taylor spectrum and the Xia spectrum .

     

Collapsibility of and some related CW complexes

Let denote the order complex of the partition lattice. The natural -action on the set induces an -action on . We show that the regular CW complex is collapsible. Even more, we show that is collapsible, where is a suitable type selection of the partition lattice. This allows us to generalize and reprove in a conceptual way several previous results regarding the multiplicity of the trivial character in the -representation on .

     

Annihilating a subspace of with the sign of a continuous function

Let be a -finite, nonatomic, Baire measure space. Let be a finite dimensional subspace of . There is a bounded, continuous function, , defined on , such that

(1) for all , and (2) almost everywhere.

     

Semigroups and weights for group representations

Let be a finite group. Consider a pair of linear characters of subgroups of with and agreeing on . Naturally associated with is a finite monoid . Semigroup representation theory then yields a representation of . If is irreducible, we say that is a weight for . When the underlying field is the field of complex numbers, we obtain a formula for the character of in terms of and . We go on to construct weights for some familiar group representations.

     

Bivariate version of the Hahn-Sonine theorem

We consider orthogonal polynomials in two variables whose derivatives with respect to are orthogonal. We show that they satisfy a system of partial differential equations of the form where , , is a vector of polynomials in and for , and is an eigenvalue matrix of order for . Also we obtain several characterizations for these polynomials. Finally, we point out that our results are able to cover more examples than Bertran's.

     

Maximal estimates for the -dimensional Walsh-Fourier series

The -dimensional dyadic martingale Hardy spaces are introduced and it is proved that the maximal operator of the means of a Walsh-Fourier series is bounded from to and is of weak type , provided that the supremum in the maximal operator is taken over a positive cone. As a consequence we obtain that the means of a function converge a.e. to the function in question. Moreover, we prove that the means are uniformly bounded on whenever . Thus, in case , the means converge to in norm. The same results are proved for the conjugate means, too.

     

Integral representation of linear functionals on spaces of unbounded functions

Let be a vector lattice of real functions on a set with , and let be a linear positive functional on . Conditions are given which imply the representation , , for some bounded charge . As an application, for any bounded charge on a field , the dual of is shown to be isometrically isomorphic to a suitable space of bounded charges on . In addition, it is proved that, under one more assumption on , is the integral with respect to a -additive bounded charge.

     

On the pointwise maximum of convex functions

We study the conjugate of the maximum, , of and when and are proper convex lower semicontinuous functions on a Banach space . We show that on the bidual, , of provided that and satisfy the Attouch-Brézis constraint qualification, and we also derive formulae for and for the ``preconjugate' of .

     

When products of selfadjoints are normal

Suppose that are two selfadjoint bounded operators on a Hilbert space . It is elementary to show that is selfadjoint precisely when . We answer the following question: Under what circumstances must be selfadjoint given that it is normal?     

The Dedekind-Mertens lemma and the contents of polynomials

Let be a commutative ring, let be an indeterminate, and let . There has been much recent work concerned with determining the Dedekind-Mertens number =min , especially on determining when = . In this note we introduce a universal Dedekind-Mertens number , which takes into account the fact that deg() + for any ring containing as a subring, and show that behaves more predictably than .

     

Pyramidal vectors and smooth functions on Banach spaces

We prove that if , are Banach spaces such that has nontrivial cotype and has trivial cotype, then smooth functions from into have a kind of ``harmonic" behaviour. More precisely, we show that if is a bounded open subset of and is -smooth with uniformly continuous Fréchet derivative, then is dense in . We also give a short proof of a recent result of P. Hájek.

     

On Euler products associated with noncuspidal metaplectic forms

In this paper, we obtain an Euler product with functional equation associated to a noncuspidal metaplectic form on the double cover of . Zagier's idea of Rankin-Selberg method is used to define the convolution of and the -function.

     

Convergence of paths for pseudo-contractive mappings in Banach spaces

Let be a real Banach space, let be a closed convex subset of , and let , from into , be a pseudo-contractive mapping (i.e. for all and 1)$">. Suppose the space has a uniformly Gâteaux differentiable norm, such that every closed bounded convex subset of enjoys the Fixed Point Property for nonexpansive self-mappings. Then the path , , defined by the equation is continuous and strongly converges to a fixed point of as , provided that satisfies the weakly inward condition.
