We study two slightly different versions of the truncated matricial Hamburger moment problem. A central topic is the construction and investigation of distinguished solutions of both moment problems under consideration. These solutions turn out to be nonnegative Hermitian q × q Borel measures on the real axis which are concentrated on a finite number of points. These points and the corresponding masses will be explicitly described in terms of the given data. Furthermore, we investigate a particular class of sequences (sj)j = 0 of complex q × q matrices for which the corresponding infinite matricial Hamburger moment problem has a unique solution. Our approach is mainly algebraic. It is based on the use of particular matrix polynomials constructed from a nonnegative Hermitian block Hankel matrix. These matrix polynomials are immediate generalizations of the monic orthogonal matrix polynomials associated with a positive Hermitian block Hankel matrix. We generalize a classical theorem due to Kronecker on infinite Hankel matrices of finite rank to block Hankel matrices and discuss its consequences for the nonnegative Hermitian case.  相似文献

In this paper we consider a numerical enclosure method for multiple eigenvalues of an Hermitian matrix whose graph is a tree. If an Hermitian matrix A whose graph is a tree has multiple eigenvalues, it has the property that matrices which are associated with some branches in the undirected graph of A have the same eigenvalues. By using this property and interlacing inequalities for Hermitian matrices, we show an enclosure method for multiple eigenvalues of an Hermitian matrix whose graph is a tree. Since we do not generally know whether a given matrix has exactly a multiple eigenvalue from approximate computations, we use the property of interlacing inequalities to enclose some eigenvalues including multiplicities. In this process, we only use the enclosure of simple eigenvalues to enclose a multiple eigenvalue by using a computer and interval arithmetic.  相似文献

In computer graphics, in the radiosity context, a linear system Φx=b must be solved and there exists a diagonal positive matrix H such that H Φ is symmetric. In this article, we extend this property to complex matrices: we are interested in matrices which lead to Hermitian matrices under premultiplication by a Hermitian positive‐definite matrix H. We shall prove that these matrices are self‐adjoint with respect to a particular innerproduct defined on ?n. As a result, like Hermitian matrices, they have real eigenvalues and they are diagonalizable. We shall also show how to extend the Courant–Fisher theorem to this class of matrices. Finally, we shall give a new preconditioning matrix which really improves the convergence speed of the conjugate gradient method used for solving the radiosity problem. Denote the set ofn×n complex Hermitian matrices byH n . A pair ofn×n Hermitian matrices (A, B) is said to be rank-additive if rank (A+B)=rankA+rankB. We characterize the linear maps fromH n into itself that preserve the set of rank-additive pairs. As applications, the linear preservers of adjoint matrix onH n and the Jordan homomorphisms ofH n are also given. The analogous problems on the skew Hermitian matrix space are considered.  相似文献

The inertia of a Hermitian matrix is defined to be a triplet composed of the numbers of the positive, negative and zero eigenvalues of the matrix counted with multiplicities, respectively. In this paper, we show some basic formulas for inertias of 2×2 block Hermitian matrices. From these formulas, we derive various equalities and inequalities for inertias of sums, parallel sums, products of Hermitian matrices, submatrices in block Hermitian matrices, differences of outer inverses of Hermitian matrices. As applications, we derive the extremal inertias of the linear matrix expression A-BXB with respect to a variable Hermitian matrix X. In addition, we give some results on the extremal inertias of Hermitian solutions to the matrix equation AX=B, as well as the extremal inertias of a partial block Hermitian matrix.  相似文献

Hermitian and unitary matrices are two representatives of the class of normal matrices whose full eigenvalue decomposition can be stably computed in quadratic computing complexity once the matrix has been reduced, for instance, to tridiagonal or Hessenberg form. Recently, fast and reliable eigensolvers dealing with low‐rank perturbations of unitary and Hermitian matrices have been proposed. These structured eigenvalue problems appear naturally when computing roots, via confederate linearizations, of polynomials expressed in, for example, the monomial or Chebyshev basis. Often, however, it is not known beforehand whether or not a matrix can be written as the sum of a Hermitian or unitary matrix plus a low‐rank perturbation. In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions characterizing the class of Hermitian or unitary plus low‐rank matrices. The number of singular values deviating from 1 determines the rank of a perturbation to bring a matrix to unitary form. A similar condition holds for Hermitian matrices; the eigenvalues of the skew‐Hermitian part differing from 0 dictate the rank of the perturbation. We prove that these relations are linked via the Cayley transform. Then, based on these conditions, we identify the closest Hermitian or unitary plus rank k matrix to a given matrix A, in Frobenius and spectral norm, and give a formula for their distance from A. Finally, we present a practical iteration to detect the low‐rank perturbation. Numerical tests prove that this straightforward algorithm is effective.  相似文献

A complex square matrix A is called an orthogonal projector if A 2?=?A?=?A*, where A* is the conjugate transpose of A. In this article, we first give some formulas for calculating the distributions of real eigenvalues of a linear combination of two orthogonal projectors. Then, we establish various expansion formulas for calculating the inertias, ranks and signatures of some 2?×?2 and 3?×?3, as well as k?×?k block Hermitian matrices consisting of two orthogonal projectors. Many applications of the formulas are presented in characterizing interval distributions of numbers of eigenvalues, and nonsingularity of these block Hermitian matrices. In addition, necessary and sufficient conditions are given for various equalities and inequalities of these block Hermitian matrices to hold.  相似文献

Bounds are derived for the eigenvalues of the Hermitian matrix C given by C=AB+BA, where A and B are positive definite, Hermitian, complex matrices. A sufficient condition is given for C to be positive definite.  相似文献

Two Hermitian matrices A,BMn(C) are said to be Hermitian-congruent if there exists a nonsingular Hermitian matrix CMn(C) such that B=CAC. In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for two nonsingular simultaneously unitarily diagonalizable Hermitian matrices A and B to be Hermitian-congruent. Moreover, when A and B are Hermitian-congruent, we describe the possible inertias of the Hermitian matrices C that carry the congruence. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for any 2-by-2 nonsingular Hermitian matrices to be Hermitian-congruent. In both of the studied cases, we show that if A and B are real and Hermitian-congruent, then they are congruent by a real symmetric matrix. Finally we note that if A and B are 2-by-2 nonsingular real symmetric matrices having the same sign pattern, then there is always a real symmetric matrix C satisfying B=CAC. Moreover, if both matrices are positive, then C can be picked with arbitrary inertia.  相似文献

We describe algorithms to compute isotropic vectors for matrices with real or complex entries. These are unit vectors b satisfying b * Ab = 0. For real matrices the algorithm uses only the eigenvectors of the symmetric part corresponding to the extreme eigenvalues. For complex matrices, we first use the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Hermitian matrix K = (A − A *)/2i. This works in many cases. In case of failure we use the Hermitian part H or a combination of eigenvectors of H and K. We give some numerical experiments comparing our algorithms with those proposed by R. Carden and C. Chorianopoulos, P. Psarrakos and F. Uhlig.  相似文献

We present a new necessary and sufficient criterion to check the positive definiteness of Hermitian interval matrices. It is shown that an n×n Hermitian interval matrix is positive definite if and only if its 4n-1(n-1)! specially chosen Hermitian vertex matrices are positive definite.  相似文献

Motivated by the definition of the inertia, introduced by Ostrowski and Schneider, a notion of angularity of a matrix is defined. The angularity characterizes the distribution of arguments of eigenvalues of a matrix. It is proved that if B and C are nonsingular matrices, then B1AB and C1AC have the same angularity provided they are diagonal. Some well-known inertia theorems (e.g. Sylvester's law) have been deduced as corollaries of this result. The case when C is permitted to be singular is discussed next. Finally, we prove that (a) any linear transformation T, on the set of n by n complex matrices, mapping Hermitian matrices into themselves and preserving the inertia of each Hermitian matrix is of the form T(A)=C1AC or T(A)=C1LA′C where C is some nonsingular matrix, and (b) any linear transformation T mapping normal matrices into normal matrices and preserving the angularity of each normal matrix is also of one of the above forms, but with C=kU where k≠0 and U is unitary.  相似文献

The notion of a (1, x) adjacency matrix is introduced, together with methods for dealing with it. It is shown that in many instances this adjacency matrix is superior to the usual (0, 1) adjacency matrix, and will distinguish cospectral pairs, when the latter will not. In those cases in which the (1, x) adjacency matrix fares no better than the (0, 1) adjacency matrix, a good deal can be said about the matrices by which the cospectral pairs are similar.  相似文献

Conjugation covariants of matrices are applied to study the real algebraic variety consisting of complex Hermitian matrices with a bounded number of distinct eigenvalues. A minimal generating system of the vanishing ideal of degenerate three by three Hermitian matrices is given, and the structure of the corresponding coordinate ring as a module over the special unitary group is determined. The method applies also for degenerate real symmetric three by three matrices. For arbitrary n   partial information on the minimal degree component of the vanishing ideal of the variety of n×nn×n Hermitian matrices with a bounded number of eigenvalues is obtained, and some known results on sum of squares presentations of subdiscriminants of real symmetric matrices are extended to the case of complex Hermitian matrices.  相似文献

We say that two graphs G1 and G2 with the same vertex set commute if their adjacency matrices commute. In this paper, we find all integers n such that the complete bipartite graph Kn,n is decomposable into commuting perfect matchings or commuting Hamilton cycles. We show that there are at most n−1 linearly independent commuting adjacency matrices of size n; and if this bound occurs, then there exists a Hadamard matrix of order n. Finally, we determine the centralizers of some families of graphs.  相似文献

An asymptotic method for reducing nonautonomous systems of differential equations with matrices represented as sums of matrix functions of different periods to systems with almost-constant matrices is proposed. On the basis of the proposed method, sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability of solutions of systems of differential equations of this type are derived.
