The reasons for the fundamental incompatibility of quantum mechanics with classical relativistic geometries are reviewed, whereupon the basic principles of a theory of measurement leading to quantum geometries are stated and discussed. The ensuing conceptualization of quantum processes is formulated as an integral part of an all-pervasive concept of quantum reality in which systems as well as apparatuses are treated as quantum objects. The basic ideas of the resulting geometro-stochastic theory of quantum measurement are explained.  相似文献

The conventionalistically based instrumentalist epistemology and methodology underlying the various approaches to the quantization of gravity is contrasted with the operationally based logical analysis practiced by the founders of relativity theory and quantum mechanics in developing their respective disciplines. The foundational problems to which they give rise are described. Their origins are traced to instrumentalist practices which have been in the past the objects of criticisms by Dirac, Heisenberg, Born, and others, but which have nevertheless prevailed in relativistic quantum physics after the emergence of the conventional renormalization program. The operationally based premises of a recently developed geometro-stochastic approach to the quantization of gravity are analyzed. It is shown that their roots lie in the epistemology adopted by the founders of relativity theory and quantum mechanics, and that they reflect a conceptualization of quantum reality which offers the possibility of a resolution of the main foundational problems encountered by the other approaches to quantum gravity.  相似文献

The physical concept of locality is first analyzed in the special relativistic quantum regime, and compared with that of microcausality and the local commutativity of quantum fields. Its extrapolation to quantum general relativity on quantum bundles over curved spacetime is then described. It is shown that the resulting formulation of quantum-geometric locality based on the concept of local quantum frame incorporating a fundamental length embodies the key geometric and topological aspects of this concept. Taken in conjunction with the strong equivalence principle and the path-integral formulation of quantum propagation, quantum-geometric locality leads in a natural manner to the formulation of quantum-geometric propagation in curved spacetime. Its extrapolation to geometric quantum gravity formulated over quantum spacetime is described and analyzed.  相似文献

The various physical aspects of the general relativistic principles of covariance and strong equivalence are discussed, and their mathematical formulations are analyzed. All these aspects are shown to be present in classical general relativity, although no contemporary formulation of canonical or covariant quantum gravity has succeeded to incorporate them all. This has, in part, motivated the recent introduction of a geometro-stochastic framework for quantum general relativity, in which the classical frame bundles that underlie the formulation of parallel transport in classical general relativity are replaced by quantum frame bundles. It is shown that quantum frames can take over the role played by complete sets of observables in conventional quantum theory, so that they can mediate the natural transference of the general covariance and the strong equivalence principles from the classical to the quantum general relativistic regime. This results in a geometrostochastic mode of quantum propagation in general relativistic quantum bundles, which is mathematically implemented by path integration methods based on parallel transport along horizontal lifts of geodesics for the vacuum expectation values of a quantum gravitational field in a quantum spacetime supermanifold. The covariance features of this field are embedded in a quantum gravitational supergroup, which incorporates Poincaré as well as diffeomorphism invariance, and resolves the issue of time in quantum gravity.  相似文献

The EPR experiment is investigated within the abstract language of relativistic quantum physics (relativistic quantum logic). First we show that the principles of reality (R) and locality (L) contradict the validity principle (Q) of quantum physics. A reformulation of this argument is then given in terms of relativistic quantum logic which is based on the principlesR andQ. It is shown that the principleL must be replaced by a convenient relaxation ¯L, by which the contradiction can be eliminated. On the other hand this weak locality principle ¯L does not contradict Einstein causality and is thus in accordance with special relativity.  相似文献

In this Letter I stress the role of causal reversibility (time symmetry), together with causality and locality, in the justification of the quantum formalism. First, in the algebraic quantum formalism, I show that the assumption of reversibility implies that the observables of a quantum theory form an abstract real C^{?} algebra, and can be represented as an algebra of operators on a real Hilbert space. Second, in the quantum logic formalism, I emphasize which axioms for the lattice of propositions (the existence of an orthocomplementation and the covering property) derive from reversibility. A new argument based on locality and Soler's theorem is used to derive the representation as projectors on a regular Hilbert space from the general quantum logic formalism. In both cases it is recalled that the restriction to complex algebras and Hilbert spaces comes from the constraints of locality and separability.  相似文献

In a series of recent papers [1–4] it has been shown how free quantum field theory can be derived without using mechanical primitives (including space-time, special relativity, quantization rules, etc.), but only considering the easiest quantum algorithm encompassing a countable set of quantum systems whose network of interactions satisfies the simple principles of unitarity, homogeneity, locality, and isotropy. This has opened the route to extending the axiomatic information-theoretic derivation of the quantum theory of abstract systems [5, 6] to include quantum field theory. The inherent discrete nature of the informational axiomatization leads to an extension of quantum field theory to a quantum cellular automata theory, where the usual field theory is recovered in a regime where the discrete structure of the automata cannot be probed. A simple heuristic argument sets the scale of discreteness to the Planck scale, and the customary physical regime where discreteness is not visible is the relativistic one of small wavevectors.  相似文献

The concept of spontaneous symmetry breaking arose first in the context of superconductivity, before it became important for elementary particle physics. Starting with its original discovery, a comparison of the workings of the Goldstone mechanism in relativistic quantum fixed theory on the one hand and in quantum statistical mechanics on the other is given. The roles of locality and of long range forces are traced. For condensed matter physics, an approach using functional integral methods and macroscopic order parameter fields, valid near critical points is outlined. A possibly more widely valid approach is also presented, to complete this review of the Goldstone theories in quantum statistical mechanics. The basic ideas of relativistic quantum chemistry are highlighted, with the most important ingredients summarised as follows. (1) The restricted kinetic balance (RKB) condition, being both necessary and sufficient, serves as the cornerstone for the matrix representation of the Dirac-based Hamiltonian. (2) The concept of matrix transformation plays the key role in formulating two-component relativistic theories. Some popular ones, albeit presented as operators, are de facto matrix formulations in terms implicitly of the RKB condition. They merely make simple things complicated as a one-step block-diagonalization of the matrix Dirac equation can do the whole job. (3) The computational efficiency for both four- and two-component relativistic theories can be gained by means of the simple chemical idea of ‘from atoms to molecule’ without recourse to mathematical tricks. The two branches of relativistic theories have thus been made fully equivalent in all the aspects of simplicity, accuracy, and efficiency. It is concluded that the best relativistic electrons-only Hamiltonian has been found, which can be combined with any know-how correlation methods for electronic structure calculations of all the atoms in the Periodic Table. Most amazingly, the new quantum mechanical equation serves as a seamless bridge between the Schrödinger and Dirac equations. In short, the ‘relativity problem’ in chemistry has been solved.  相似文献

Peculiarities of symmetrical quantum systems are considered with the aid of the Mackey's induced representations theory. The four-dimensional coordinate representation of the relativistic quantum mechanics suggested by Stueckelberg in 1941 is rederived, reinterpreted and generalized for an arbitrary spin. Then it is applied to introduce the causal propagator as a particleantiparticle transition amplitude without consideration of a field equation. Finally the theory of relativistic quantum particles interaction is reformulated without an appeal to the concept of quantized fields.  相似文献

The stochastic phase-space solution of the particle localizability problem in relativistic quantum mechanics is reviewed. It leads to relativistically covariant probability measures that give rise to covariant and conserved probability currents. The resulting particle propagators are used in the formulation of stochastic geometries underlying a concept of quantum spacetime that is operationally based on stochastically extended quantum test particles. The epistemological implications of the intrinsic stochasticity of such quantum spacetime frameworks for microcausality, the EPR paradox, etc., are discussed.Supported in part by NSERC Grant A5208.  相似文献

In this paper we study the relativistic quantum-mechanical interpretation of the solution of the inhomogeneous Euclidean Bethe-Salpeter equation. Our goal is to determine conditions on the input to the Euclidean Bethe-Salpeter equation so the solution can be used to construct a model Hilbert space and a dynamical unitary representation of the Poincaré group. We prove three theorems that relate the stability of this construction to properties of the kernel and driving term of the Bethe-Salpeter equation. The most interesting result is that the positivity of the Hilbert space norm in the non-interacting theory is not stable with respect to Euclidean covariant perturbations defined by Bethe-Salpeter kernels. The long-term goal of this work is to understand which model Euclidean Green functions preserve the underlying relativistic quantum theory of the original field theory. Understanding the constraints imposed on the Green functions by the existence of an underlying relativistic quantum theory is an important consideration for formulating field-theory motivated relativistic quantum models. This work supported in part by the U.S. Department of Energy, under contract DE-FG02-86ER40286  相似文献

An investigation of the invariance of quantum theory under the complex group reveals a natural origin of relativistic physics from quantum theory. Once such an origin of relativity is accepted, quantum limitations on the applicability of standard relativistic theory also become evident.  相似文献

This paper assesses Miklós Rédei's [1991] proof of the proposition that algebraic relativistic quantum field theory is stochastic Einstein local. The conclusion is that either Rédei's proof is spurious, in that it does not really prove what it intends to establish, or that the proof is fallacious. The paper is self-contained in the sense that the few ingredients of algebraic quantum theory that go into Rédei's proof are first summed up. Then Hellman's definition of stochastic Einstein locality is discussed, a detailed exposition is offered of Rédei's proof, and finally the author's refutation is explicated.  相似文献

A quantum relativity theory formulated in terms of Davis' quantum relativity principle is outlined. The first task in this theory as in classical relativity theory is to model space-time, the arena of natural processes. It is shown that the quantum space-time models of Banai introduced in another paper is formulated in terms of Davis' quantum relativity. The recently proposed classical relativistic quantum theory of Prugoveki and his corresponding classical relativistic quantum model of space-time open the way to introduce, in a consistent way, the quantum space-time model (the quantum substitute of Minkowski space) of Banai proposed in the paper mentioned. The goal of quantum mechanics of quantum relativistic particles living in this model of space-time is to predict the rest mass system properties of classically relativistic (massive) quantum particles (elementary particles). The main new aspect of this quantum mechanics is that provides a true mass eigenvalue problem, and that the excited mass states of quantum relativistic particles can be interpreted as elementary particles. The question of field theory over quantum relativistic model of space-time is also discussed. Finally it is suggested that quarks should be considered as quantum relativistic particles.Supported by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.  相似文献

The Federbush, massless Thirring and continuum Ising models and related integrable relativistic quantum field theories are studied. It is shown that local and covariant classical field operators exist that generate Bogoliubov transformations of the annihilation and creation operators on the Fock spaces of the respective models. The quantum fields of these models are closely related or equal to quadratic forms implementing these transformations, and hence formally inherit the covariance and locality of the underlying classical field operators. It is proved that the Federbush and massless Thirring fields on the physical sector do not satisfy the equation of motion. Closely related fields are defined that do satisfy it, and which lead to the same S-matrix, but these fields are presumably non-local. Bethe transforms are constructed for the various models, and on the unphysical sector the relation with the field theory approach is established.  相似文献

This paper is devoted to Landau's concept of the problem of damping in quantum mechanics. It shows that Landau's density matrix formalism should survive in the context of modern quantum electrodynamics. The correct generalized master equation has been derived for the reduced dynamics of the charges. The recent relativistic theory of spontaneous emission becomes reproducible.Contributed to the Landau Memorial Conference on Frontiers of Physics, Tel Aviv, 1988.  相似文献
