In this work, the adsorption behavior at the silver/toluene and alumina/toluene interface of polystyrene–polyethylene oxide (PS‐PEO) diblock copolymers of various molecular weights was investigated by implementation of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique. This was accomplished under a careful choice of experimental setup and the use of a suitable physical model for the interpretation of the experimental data. Comparison between polystyrene homopolymer and PS‐PEO diblock copolymer adsorption measurements indicate that PS‐PEO is anchored on the alumina surface via the PEO block, while on silver the copolymer is attached by various chain segments. The measured final adsorption amounts on alumina are typical of end‐attached polymeric brush formation while the dynamics of the adsorption process present two clearly different evolution regimes. This work provides insight into the many advantages of the use of the SPR technique as a valuable tool for similar surface studies. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The “topological polymer chemistry” of amphiphilic linear and cyclic block copolymers at an air/water interface was investigated. A cyclic copolymer and two linear copolymers (AB‐type diblock and ABA‐type triblock copolymers) synthesized from the same monomers were used in this study. Relatively stable monolayers of these three copolymers were observed to form at an air/water interface. Similar condensed‐phase temperature‐dependent behaviors were observed in surface pressure–area isotherms for these three monolayers. Molecular orientations at the air/water interface for the two linear block copolymers were similar to that of the cyclic block copolymer. Atomic force microscopic observations of transferred films for the three polymer types revealed the formation of monolayers with very similar morphologies at the mesoscopic scale at room temperature and constant compression speed. ABA‐type triblock linear copolymers adopted a fiber‐like surface morphology via two‐dimensional crystallization at low compression speeds. In contrast, the cyclic block copolymer formed a shapeless domain. Temperature‐controlled out‐of‐plane X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films fabricated from both amphiphilic linear and cyclic block copolymers was performed to estimate the layer regularity at higher temperatures. Excellent heat‐resistant properties of organized molecular films created from the cyclic copolymer were confirmed. Both copolymer types showed clear diffraction peaks at room temperature, indicating the formation of highly ordered layer structures. However, the layer structures of the linear copolymers gradually disordered when heated. Conversely, the regularity of cyclic copolymer LB multilayers did not change with heating up to 50 °C. Higher‐order reflections (d002, d003) in the XRD patterns were also unchanged, indicative of a highly ordered structure. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Novel block copolymers, poly(3‐hexylthiophene)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (P3HT‐b‐PEO) were synthesized via Suzuki coupling reaction of P3HT and PEO homopolymers. The copolymers were characterized by NMR, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimeter, and UV–vis measurements. A series of devices based on the block copolymers with a fullerene derivative were evaluated after thermal or solvent annealing. The device using P3HT‐b‐PEO showed higher efficiency than using P3HT blend after thermal annealing. Phase‐separated structures in the thin films of block copolymer blends were investigated by atomic force microscopy to clarify the relationship between morphologies constructed by annealing and the device performance. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Creating perpendicular alignment in lamellar block copolymer (BCP) systems has considerable industrial and commercial significance, most importantly for generating nanowire structures in electronic devices. In general, these lamellar systems require careful interface engineering to obtain vertical orientation of the blocks. To avoid the strong preferential adsorption of one block to either the substrate or the polymer/air interface, the surface must be “neutralized” by chemical brushes or external forces, for example, solvent fields. Reported here is a stepwise thermo/solvent annealing process allowing the formation of perpendicular domains of polystyrene‐b‐polyethylene oxide lamellar structures while avoiding brush or other surface modifications. This BCP has a relatively small minimum feature size and can be used to generate substrate patterns for use in fabrication of nanowire electronic device structures. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biodegradable, amphiphilic, four‐armed poly(?‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PCL‐b‐PEO) copolymers were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide in the presence of four‐armed poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) with terminal OH groups with diethylzinc (ZnEt2) as a catalyst. The chemical structure of PCL‐b‐PEO copolymer was confirmed by 1H NMR and 13C NMR. The hydroxyl end groups of the four‐armed PCL were successfully substituted by PEO blocks in the copolymer. The monomodal profile of molecular weight distribution by gel permeation chromatography provided further evidence for the four‐armed architecture of the copolymer. Physicochemical properties of the four‐armed block copolymers differed from their starting four‐armed PCL precursor. The melting points were between those of PCL precursor and linear poly(ethylene glycol). The length of the outer PEO blocks exhibited an obvious effect on the crystallizability of the block copolymer. The degree of swelling of the four‐armed block copolymer increased with PEO length and PEO content. The micelle formation of the four‐armed block copolymer was examined by a fluorescent probe technique, and the existence of the critical micelle concentration (cmc) confirmed the amphiphilic nature of the resulting copolymer. The cmc value increased with increasing PEO length. The absolute cmc values were higher than those for linear amphiphilic block copolymers. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene‐alt‐propylene)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEP‐PEO) diblock copolymers were synthesized and added at 4 wt % to 2,2‐bis[4‐(2‐hydroxy‐3‐methacryloxypropoxy)phenyl]propane (BisGMA), a monomer that cures using free radical chemistry. In separate experiments, poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) was combined as a secondary monomer with BisGMA and the monomers were loaded with 4 wt % PEP‐PEO. The diblock copolymers self‐assembled into well‐dispersed spherical micelles with PEP cores and PEO coronas. No appreciable change in the final extent of cure of the thermosets was caused by the addition of diblock copolymer, except in the case of BisGMA, where the addition of the block copolymer increased extent of cure by 12%. Furthermore, the extent of cure was increased by 29% and 37% with the addition of 25 and 50 wt % PEGDMA, respectively. Elastic modulus and fracture resistance were also determined, and the values indicate that the addition of block copolymers does not significantly toughen the thermoset materials. This finding is surprising when compared with the large increase in fracture resistance seen in block copolymer‐modified epoxies, and an explanation is proposed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new, efficient method for synthesizing stable nanoparticles with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) functionalities on the core surface, in which the micellization and crosslinking reactions occur in one pot, has been developed. First, amphiphilic PEO‐b‐PS copolymers were synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) radical polymerization of styrene using (PEO)‐based trithiocarbonate as a macro‐RAFT agent. The low molecular weight PEO‐b‐PS copolymer was dissolved in isopropyl alcohol where the block copolymer self‐assembled as core‐shell micelles, and then the core‐shell interface crosslink was performed using divinylbenzene as a crosslinking agent and 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator. The design of the amphiphilic RAFT agent is critical for the successful preparation of core‐shell interface crosslinked micellar nanoparticles, because of RAFT functional groups interconnect PEO and polystyrene blocks. The PEO functionality of the nanoparticles surface was confirmed by 1H NMR and FTIR. The size and morphology of the nanoparticles was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and dynamic laser light scattering analysis. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Electrospinning of fibers composed of poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT), fullerene derivative, phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), and single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) is reported. While of great promise for photovoltaic applications, morphological control of functional structures is a great challenge for most processing methods. It is demonstrated that the use of a tailor‐made block‐copolymer for dispersion of individual SWNT enables the preparation of stable dispersions of individual tubes that may be further cospun from chloroform solutions with PCBM and P3HT into submicron fibers. The block copolymer used to mediate the colloidal and interfacial interactions in the combined system enables the spinning of centimeters long and uniform fibers. Structural characterization indicates a high degree of ordering and alignment within the fibers and absorption and quenching of the photoluminescence indicate significant interactions among the components. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New all‐conjugated block copolythiophene, poly(3‐hexylthiophene)‐block‐poly(3‐(4′‐(3″,7″‐dimethyloctyloxy)‐3′‐pyridinyl)thiophene) (P3HT‐b‐P3PyT) was successfully prepared by Grignard metathesis polymerization. The supramolecular interaction between [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and P3PyT was proposed to control the aggregated size of PCBM and long‐term thermal stability of the photovoltaic cell, as evidenced by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and optical microscopy. The effect of different solvents on the electronic and optoelectronic properties was studied, including chloroform (CL), dichlorobenzene (DCB), and mixed solvent of CL/DCB. The optimized bulk heterojunction solar cell devices using the P3HT‐b‐P3PyT/PCBM blend showed a power conversion efficiency of 2.12%, comparable to that of P3HT/PCBM device despite the fact that former had a lower crystallinity or absorption coefficient. Furthermore, P3HT‐b‐P3PyT could be also used as a surfactant to enhance the long‐term thermal stability of P3HT/PCBM‐based solar cells by limiting the aggregated size of PCBM. This study represents a new supramolecular approach to design all‐conjugated block copolymers for high‐performance photovoltaic devices. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We demonstrate a possibility to create custom‐made surface patterns on multiple length scales by melting selected nano‐meter‐sized polymer crystals confined in a highly ordered, spherical mesostructure of a hydrogenated poly(butadiene‐block‐ethylene oxide) (PBhb‐PEO) block copolymer. With heatable probes of an atomic force microscope as a heat source, we succeeded to provide highly locally the thermal energy necessary to individually melt such crystals. Besides this possibility for modification of surface properties, we performed detailed in situ studies of thermally induced reorganization processes and subsequent melting of polymer crystals in confined volumes of a block copolymer mesostructure. Close to the melting point, the stability of the confined crystals could be improved by annealing. In addition, the crystal size increased at the expense of already‐molten crystals, indicating diffusion of PEO blocks across the highly incompatible PBh matrix. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A poly(p‐phenylene) (PPP)‐poly(4‐diphenylaminostyrene) (PDAS) bipolar block copolymer was synthesized for the first time. A prerequisite prepolymer, poly(1,3‐cyclohexadiene) (PCHD)‐PDAS binary block copolymer, in which the PCHD block consisted solely of 1,4‐cyclohexadiene (1,4‐CHD) units, was synthesized by living anionic block copolymerization of 1,3‐cyclohexadiene and 4‐diphenylaminostyrene. To obtain the PPP‐PDAS bipolar block copolymer, the dehydrogenation of this prepolymer with quinones was examined, and tetrachloro‐1,2‐(o)‐benzoquinone was found to be an appropriate dehydrogenation reagent. This dehydrogenation reaction was remarkably accelerated by ultrasonic irradiation, effectively yielding the target PPP‐PDAS bipolar block copolymer. The hole and electron drift mobilities for PPP‐PDAS bipolar block copolymer were both on the order of 10?3 to 10?4 cm2/V·s, with a negative slope when plotted against the square root of the applied field. Therefore, this bipolar block copolymer was found to act as a bipolar semi‐conducting copolymer. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

A new photoresponsive amphiphilic triblock copolymer, poly(pyrenylmethyl methacrylate)‐block‐polystyrene‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PPy‐b‐PSt‐b‐PEO), was synthesized using atom‐transfer radical polymerization. Formation of colloidal aggregates of the polymer was observed in solutions under controlled conditions due to the amphiphilic nature of the polymer. Irradiation of the polymer aggregates using UV light resulted in the photodissociation of 1‐pyrenemethanol units from the polymer back‐bone resulting in break‐up of the aggregates mainly due to the hydrophilic nature of the residual polymer. The use of these polymer aggregates to trap hydrophobic fluorescent dyes in water and its controlled release on exposure to UV light has also been explored. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The self‐assembly of a metallo‐supramolecular PS‐[Ru]‐PEO block copolymer, where ‐[Ru]‐ is a bis‐2,2′:6′,2″‐terpyridine‐ruthenium(II) complex, in thin films was investigated. Metallo‐supramolecular copolymers exhibit a different behavior as compared to their covalent counterparts. The presence of the charged complex at the junction of the two blocks has a strong impact on the self‐assembly, effecting the orientation of the cylinders and ordering process. Poly(ethylene oxide) cylinders oriented normal to the film surface are obtained directly regardless of the experimental conditions over a wide range of thicknesses. Exposure to polar solvent vapors can be used to improve the lateral ordering of the cylindrical microdomains. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The successful synthesis is described for a donor–acceptor rod–coil block copolymer comprising blocks of poly[2,7‐(9,9‐dihexylfluorene)‐alt‐bithiophene] (F6T2) and polystyrene functionalized with fullerene (PS(C60)) (F6T2‐b‐PS(C60)). This new material was obtained by combining Suzuki polycondensation with radical addition fragmentation chain transfer. The block copolymer was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, gel permeation chromatography, and optical spectroscopy methods. Photophysical data for (F6T2‐b‐PS(C60)) and a related block copolymer (F6T2‐b‐PS(PCBM)) (PCBM, phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester) are reported and their performance as compatibilizers in bulk heterojunction organic solar cells is assessed. It is demonstrated that the addition of the rod–coil block copolymers to the active layer extends the operational stability of organic photovoltaic devices. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Ellipsometry is used to measure the crystallization and melting temperature of a bidisperse blend of a crystalline‐amorphous diblock copolymer. Binary blends of sphere‐forming poly(butadiene‐ethylene oxide) (PB‐PEO) of two different molecular weights are prepared. The two PB‐PEO diblocks that are used share the same amorphous majority PB block length but different crystalline PEO minority block length. As the concentration of higher molecular weight diblock in the blend is increased, the size of the PEO spherical domains swell, providing access to the full range of domain sizes between the limits of the two neat diblock components. The change in domain size is consistent with a monotonic change in both the crystallization and melting temperatures. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys, 2011  相似文献

T‐shaped coil–rod–coil oligomers, consisting of a dibenzo[a,c]phenazine unit and phenyl groups linked together with acetylenyl bonds at the 2,7‐position of dibenzo[a,c]phenazine as a rigid segment have been synthesized. The coil segments of these new molecules composed of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)–poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) incorporating lateral methyl groups between the rod and coil segment and two flexible alkyl groups connecting with the rigid segment at the 4,6‐position of dibenzo[a,c]phenazine, respectively. The experimental results reveal that the length of the flexible PEO coil chain influence construction of various supra‐nanostructures from lamellar structure to rectangular columnar structure. It is also shown that introduction of different length of alkyl side chain groups in the backbone of the T‐shaped molecules affect the self‐organization behavior to form hexagonal perforate layer or oblique columnar structures. In addition, lateral methyl groups attached to the surface of rod and coil segments, dramatically influence the self‐assembling behavior in the crystalline phase. T‐shaped molecules containing a lateral methyl group at the surface of rod and PEO coil segments, self‐assemble into 3D body‐centered tetragonal structures in the crystalline phase, while molecules without a lateral methyl group based on PEO coil chain self‐organize into 2D oblique columnar crystalline structures. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, a postpolymerization surface modification approach is reported that provides pendent thiol functionality along the polymer brush backbone using the photolabile protection chemistry of both o‐nitrobenzyl and p‐methoxyphenacyl thioethers. Poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) brushes were synthesized via surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization, after which the pHEMA hydroxyl groups were esterified with 3‐(2‐nitrobenzylthio)propanoic acid or 3‐(2‐(4‐methoxyphenyl)‐2‐oxoethylthio)propanoic acid to provide the photolabile protected pendent thiols. Addressing the protecting groups with light not only affords spatial control of reactive thiol functionality but enables a plethora of thiol‐mediated transformations with isocyanates and maleimides providing a modular route to create functional polymer surfaces. This concept was extended to block copolymer brush architectures enabling the modification of the chemical functionality of both the inner and outer blocks of the block copolymer surface. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PEO–PDMS) diblock copolymer was used to template a bisphenol A type epoxy resin (ER); nanostructured thermoset blends of ER and PEO–PDMS were prepared with 4,4′‐methylenedianiline (MDA) as the curing agent. The phase behavior, crystallization, hydrogen‐bonding interactions, and nanoscale structures were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and small‐angle X‐ray scattering. The uncured ER was miscible with the poly(ethylene oxide) block of PEO–PDMS, and the uncured blends were not macroscopically phase‐separated. Macroscopic phase separation took place in the MDA‐cured ER/PEO–PDMS blends containing 60–80 wt % PEO–PDMS diblock copolymer. However, the composition‐dependent nanostructures were formed in the cured blends with 10–50 wt % PEO–PDMS, which did not show macroscopic phase separation. The poly(dimethylsiloxane) microdomains with sizes of 10–20 nm were dispersed in a continuous ER‐rich phase; the average distance between the neighboring microdomains was in the range of 20–50 nm. The miscibility between the cured ER and the poly(ethylene oxide) block of PEO–PDMS was ascribed to the favorable hydrogen‐bonding interaction. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic dendritic–linear–dendritic triblock copolymers based on hydrophilic linear poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and hydrophobic dendritic carbosilane were synthesized with a divergent approach at the allyl end groups of diallyl‐terminated PEO. Their micellar characteristics in an aqueous phase were investigated with dynamic light scattering, fluorescence techniques, and transmission electron microscopy. The block copolymer with the dendritic moiety of a third generation could not be dispersed in water. The block copolymers with the first (PEO–D ‐Si‐1G) and second (PEO–D ‐Si‐2G) generations of dendritic carbosilane blocks formed micelles in an aqueous phase. The critical micelle concentrations of PEO–D ‐Si‐1G and PEO–D ‐Si‐2G, determined by a fluorescence technique, were 27 and 16 mg/L, respectively. The mean diameters of the micelles of PEO–D ‐Si‐1G and PEO–D ‐Si‐2G, measured by dynamic light scattering, were 170 and 190 nm, respectively, which suggests that the micelles had a multicore‐type structure. The partition equilibrium constants of pyrene in the micellar solution increased with the increasing size of the dendritic block (e.g., 7.68 × 104 for PEO–D ‐Si‐1G and 9.57 × 104 for PEO–D ‐Si‐2G). The steady‐state fluorescence anisotropy values (r) of 1,6‐diphenyl‐1,3,5‐hexatriene were 0.06 for PEO–D ‐Si‐1G and 0.09 for PEO–D ‐Si‐2G. The r values were lower than those of the linear polymeric amphiphiles, suggesting that the microviscosity of the dendritic micellar core was lower than that of the linear polymeric analogues. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Multistimuli‐responsive precise morphological control over self‐assembled polymers is of great importance for applications in nanoscience as drug delivery system. A novel pH, photoresponsive, and cyclodextrin‐responsive block copolymer were developed to investigate the reversible morphological transition from micelles to vesicles. The azobenzene‐containing block copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate‐co‐6‐(4‐phenylazo phenoxy)hexyl methacrylate) [PEO‐b‐P(DEAEMA‐co‐PPHMA)] was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. This system can self‐assemble into vesicles in aqueous solution at pH 8. On adjusting the solution pH to 3, there was a transition from vesicles to micelles. The same behavior, that is, transition from vesicles to micelles was also realizable on addition of β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) to the PEO‐b‐P(DEAEMA‐co‐PPHMA) solution at pH 8. Furthermore, after β‐CD was added, alternating irradiation of the solution with UV and visible light can also induce the reversible micelle‐to‐vesicle transition because of the photoinduced trans‐to‐cis isomerization of azobenzene units. The multistimuli‐responsive precise morphological changes were studied by laser light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and UV–vis spectra. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
