In this study, a hybrid nanopaper consisting of carbon nanofiber (CNF) and polyhedral oligomeric silsequioxane (POSS) or cloisite Na+ clay, has been fabricated through the papermaking process. The hybrid nanopaper was then coated on the surface of glass fiber (GF) reinforced polymer matrix composites through resin transfer molding (RTM) process. The morphologies of the hybrid nanopaper and resulting nanocomposites were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It can be seen that the nanopaper had a porous structure with highly entangled carbon nanofibers and the polyester resin completely penetrated the nanopaper throughout the thickness. The thermal decomposition behavior of the hybrid nanopapers and nanocomposites was studied with the real‐time thermogravimetric analysis/ flourier transform infrared spectrometry (TGA/FTIR). The test results indicate that the addition of pristine nanoclay increased the thermal stability of the nanopaper, whereas the POSS particles decreased the thermal stability of the nanopaper. The fire retardant performance of composite laminates coated with the hybrid nanopaper was evaluated with cone calorimeter tests using a radiated heat flux of 50 kW/m2. The cone calorimeter test results indicate that the peak heat release rate (PHRR) decreased dramatically in composite laminates coated with the CNF‐clay nanopaper. However, the PHRRs of the CNF‐POSS nanopaper coated composite laminates increased. The formation of compact char materials was observed on the surface of the residues of the CNF‐clay nanopaper after cone calorimeter test. The flame retardant mechanisms of the hybrid nanopaper in the composite laminates are discussed. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A hybrid nanopaper consisting of carbon nanofibre (CNF) and/or clay, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS), ammonium polyphosphate (APP), has been fabricated through the papermaking process. The as-prepared hybrid nanopaper was then incorporated onto the surface of glass fibre (GF) reinforced polymer matrix composites through injection moulding. The morphologies of hybrid nanopapers with and without the polymer resin were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The polymer resin penetrated the entire nanopaper under a high-pressure compressed air system. The thermal decomposition behaviour of hybrid nanopapers infused with resin was studied with real-time thermogravimetric analysis/Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (TGA/FTIR). The test results indicate that the addition of clay in the hybrid paper increased the char residues of the nanocomposites. The fire retardant performance of composite laminates incorporating hybrid nanopaper was evaluated by cone calorimeter testing using a radiant heat flux of 50 kW/m2. The cone test results indicated that the peak heat release rate (PHRR) decreased dramatically in the case of laminate composites incorporating CNF/clay/APP hybrid paper. However, the extent of reduction of PHRR of the composite laminates incorporated with CNF/POSS/APP hybrid paper was lower. The formation of compact char materials was observed on the surface of the residues and analyzed by SEM and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The flame retardant mechanisms of hybrid nanopapers in composite laminates are discussed.  相似文献

The flammability behavior of the system polyamide 6 (PA 6) + melamine cyanurate (MC) with or without organically modified layered montmorillonite (OMMT) or sodium montmorillonite (Na+MMT) was studied. The high degree of flame retardancy (FR) obtained with 13 wt% MC is maintained upon adding up to 0.2 wt% OMMT or Na+MMT. Increase mass % of OMMT is antagonistic to the MC effect. The rate of dripping decreases while the size and mass of drops in the UL‐94 tests increases with increasing wt% OMMT indicating increase in viscosity of the melt and decrease in the rate of sublimation of melamine. Addition of poly vinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) decreases the viscosity and partially restores the FR rating. Na+MMT does not increase the viscosity and the FR ratings are partially preserved. The peak of heat release rate (PHRR) in the cone calorimeter decreases with increased loading of OMMT. Addition of Na+MMT or PVP has little influence on the PHRR. The time of ignition decreases with increase in OMMT, but is not affected when Na+MMT is used. This is explained by the low thermal conductivity of the clay containing surface layer of samples during pyrolysis and combustion. Mechanistic considerations are presented. Modified montmorillonite‐containing phytic acid (PA‐MMT) has been prepared by acid treatment and then introduced into unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) with an intumescent flame retardant (IFRs). The flame retardancy and thermal degradation of UPR/IFRs/PA‐MMT were evaluated by a limiting oxygen index (LOI) test, a vertical burning test (UL‐94), a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and a cone calorimeter test (CCT). Besides, the mechanical properties were studied by a universal testing machine. The LOI value of UPR/IFRs/PA‐MMT composites was increased to 29.2%. The CCT results indicated that the incorporation of PA‐MMT and IFRs significantly improved the combustion behavior of UPR. The results of the mechanical properties indicated that 1.5 wt% loading of PA‐MMT in UPR/IFRs showed the highest improvement in flexural strength and tensile strength. The flame‐retardant mechanism of PA‐MMT/IFRs was examined and discussed based on the results of combustion behavior and char analysis.  相似文献

Native cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) were prepared from bleached birch pulp without any chemical or enzymatic pretreatment. These CNF were modified by adsorption of a small amount of water-soluble polysaccharides and used to prepare nanopapers, which were processed into composites by lamination with an epoxy resin and subsequently cured. The results were compared to the properties of composites prepared using bacterial cellulose nanopapers, since bacterial cellulose constitutes highly pure and crystalline cellulose. It was found that both types of nanopapers significantly improved both the thermal stability and mechanical properties of the epoxy resin. As anticipated, addition of only 2 wt% of water-soluble polysaccharides efficiently hindered crack-propagation within the nanopaper and significantly improved the tensile strength and work of fracture compared to composites containing a conventional nanopaper reinforcement. The mechanical properties of the composites thus reflected the improvement of the nanopaper properties by the polysaccharides. Moreover, it was possible to predict the properties of the final composite from the mechanical performance of the nanopapers.  相似文献

Microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (MAPP) with polyurethane resin has been prepared by in situ polymerization. The combination of MAPP and boron phosphate (BP) on the flammability properties of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) was studied by vertical burning (UL‐94) tests, limiting oxygen index tests, cone calorimetry (CONE), and microscale combustion calorimeter (MCC) whereas thermal stability was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis and real‐time Fourier transform infrared. Results showed that a suitable substitution of MAPP by BP could improve flame retardancy of the TPU/MAPP composites and TPU composites with MAPP/BP (15.5/2 wt%) achieving UL‐94 V‐0 rating. The CONE and MCC data showed synergistic effects between BP and MAPP in the composites. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The flame retardancy and thermal stability of ammonium polyphosphate/tripentaerythritol (APP/TPE) intumescent flame retarded polystyrene composites (PS/IFR) combined with organically-modified layered inorganic materials (montmorillonite clay and zirconium phosphate), nanofiber (multiwall carbon nanotubs), nanoparticle (Fe2O3) and nickel catalyst were evaluated by cone calorimetry, microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Cone calorimetry revealed that a small substitution of IFR by most of these fillers (≤2%) imparted substantial improvement in flammability performance. The montmorillonite clay exhibited the highest efficiency in reducing the peak heat release rate of PS/IFR composite, while zirconium phosphate modified with C21H26NClO3S exhibited a negative effect. The yield and thermal stability of the char obtained from TGA correlated well with the reduction in the peak heat release rate in the cone calorimeter. Since intumesence is a condensed-phase flame process, the MCC results showed features different from those obtained from the cone calorimeter.  相似文献

In this work, an organic inorganic hybrid intumescent flame retardant (functionalized expandable graphite, FEG) was synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR). The flame retardant effects of FEG in silicone rubber (SR) composites were investigated by cone calorimeter test (CCT), and the thermal stability of SR composites was studied using TGA. The CCT results showed that FEG can effectively reduce the flammable properties including peak heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR), smoke production rate (SPR), total smoke release (TSR), and smoke factor (SF). An improvement of thermal stability of SR/FEG was also observed. Compared with EG, FEG can further reduce THR, SPR, and TSR of SR/FEG composites in combustion process. Moreover, there is a more obvious intumescent char layer formed from the sample with FEG than the sample with EG at the same loading in SR composites. A hybrid material (HPPA‐SH‐mSiO2) containing multiple flame‐retardant elements was synthesized and characterized using NMR, FTIR, and XPS techniques. This hybrid was synthesized by the “thiol–ene” click reaction of thiol‐functionalized mesoporous silica (SH‐mSiO2) with ene‐terminated hyperbranched polyphosphate acrylate (HPPA).When 2 wt% HPPA‐SH‐mSiO2 hybrid was added to an epoxy matrix, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the incorporation of HPPA‐SH‐mSiO2 increased the thermal stability of epoxy resin composites. Moreover, the combustion behavior of epoxy composites was investigated using a cone calorimeter, and the results show that the PHRR and THR of EP/HPPA‐SH‐mSiO2 composites clearly decreased by 28.7% and 16%, respectively. Volatile toxic compounds such as aromatic compounds, CO, carbonyl compounds, and hydrocarbons were identified using TGA‐infrared spectroscopy coupling technique. The effect of HPPA‐SH‐mSiO2 hybrids on the removal of toxic volatiles was also investigated. Functionalized mesoporous silica and polymer composites have potential applications.  相似文献

Brominated flame retardant polystyrene composites were prepared by melt blending polystyrene, decabromodiphenyl oxide, antimony oxide, multi-wall carbon nanotubes and montmorillonite clay. Synergy between carbon nanotubes and clay and the brominated fire retardant was studied by thermogravimetric analysis, microscale combustion calorimetry and cone calorimetry. Nanotubes are more efficient than clay in improving the flame retardancy of the materials and promoting carbonization in the polystyrene matrix. Comparison of the results from the microscale combustion calorimeter and the cone calorimeter indicate that the rate of change of the peak heat release rate reduction in the microscale combustion calorimeter was slower than that in the cone. Both heat release capacity and reduction in the peak heat release rate in the microscale combustion calorimeter are important for screening the flame retardant materials; they show good correlations with the cone parameters, peak heat release rate and total heat released.  相似文献

A study of the simultaneous application of a brominated flame retardant and an organically layered silicate (OLS) for the flame retarding of polyamide 6 (PA6) is presented. Upon treating PA6 with at least 7 wt% monomeric pentabromobenzyl acrylate (PMA), a UL‐94 V‐0 rating and an oxygen index (OI) value of 29.7 were obtained. By adding 1 wt% organically layered montorillonite (OMMT) and 10 wt% PMA, the V‐0 rating remained, indicating cooperation between PMA and OMMT. Higher concentrations of OMMT result in a decreased UL‐94 rating showing an antagonism. The size and mass of drops formed in the UL‐94 test increased with increasing OMMT, suggesting an increase in the viscosity and density of the pyrolyzing matrix. The effect of the Br additive on the peak heat release rate (PHRR) measured in the cone calorimeter is similar, but smaller, than that of clay. A calculation of the synergistic effectivity related to PHRR enabling a numerical estimate of the extent of synergism or antagonism is presented. When the ill‐dispersed pristine clay (Na+MMT) is used, the viscosity does not increase, the PHRR decreases slightly, but the mass loss rate (MLR) is close to that of the matrix. The time of ignition (TOI) decreases upon the addition of PMA, similarly to the addition of OMMT. This is explained by migration of the Br additive to the surface barrier similar to that of clay so that the low thermal conductivity (TC) barrier is formed before the ignition. Accumulation of heat in the barrier decreases the TOI. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

At present, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is widely used, but there are still many defects in fire safety, such as burning with heavy smoke and dripping. In this article, OS@MP was synthesized by modifying oyster shell (OS) powder with melamine polyphosphate (MP) and then served as fire‐safe agent for TPU. The fire performance of TPU composites were investigated using microscale combustion colorimeter (MCC), cone calorimeter test (CCT), smoke density test (SDT), and thermogravimetric analysis/Fourier transform infrared (TG‐FTIR) spectrum analysis. The MCC and CCT results revealed that OS@MP could reduce the fire hazards of TPU composites. The peak heat release rate (pHRR) of the sample with 10.0 wt% OS@MP decreased to 170.86 kW/m2 from 1772.37 kW/m2 for pure TPU. And, the SDT results showed that OS@MP could significantly reduce the smoke production of TPU composites. The TG‐FTIR also confirmed that the noncombustible gases (including CO2, ammonia, and water vapor) produced by OS@MP have played a reinforcing role in TPU composites as well as a char formed on the surface of composites, which could act as a barrier to prevent the heat and air, reinforce the fire safety of TPU.  相似文献

To study the influence of the T31 content on the combustion properties and thermal degradation behaviors of flame-retardant epoxy composites, a series of flame-retardant epoxy composites were prepared using E-44 epoxy resin as matrix, T31 curing agent as curing agent, and intumescent flame retardant (IFR, based on phosphorus acid, melamine, and pentaerythritol) as flame retardant. The influence of T31 content on combustion behaviors and thermal degradation properties of the flame-retardant epoxy composites were studied using cone calorimeter test (CCT) and thermal-gravimetric analysis (TG), respectively. The cone calorimeter test results indicate that the decrease of T31 can significantly decrease the HRR, THR, SPR, and enhance the char residue of the epoxy composites. EP-4 with 7.0 wt% T31 shows the lowest HRR, SPR and the highest char residue. Furthermore, the TG results indicate that the EP-4 has the highest char residue among all the epoxy composites.  相似文献

Synergy in flame retardancy of polyurethane foams between phosphorus-based flame retardant (aluminium phosphinate) and layered silicates has been investigated. We used pristine montmorillonite as well as ammonium modified clay (commercially available) and diphosphonium modified clay, which were synthesised by the intercalation of the quaternary diphosphonium salt according to a procedure reported here. The morphology of the foams was characterised through X-ray diffraction (XRD), while thermal properties were characterised by oxygen index test, cone calorimeter and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The morphological characterisation showed that pristine and diphosphonium modified clays are almost slightly intercalated, while ammonium modified one is very well dispersed. The results of thermal characterisation showed that in the presence of phosphinate enhancements of oxygen index, fire behaviour, measured by cone calorimeter, and thermal stability have been achieved. Phosphinate is therefore an efficient flame retardant for polyurethane foams and its flame retardancy action takes place in both condensed and gas phases. Pristine and ammonium modified layered silicate bring some enhancements of thermal stability while having no important effect in decreasing peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat evolved (THE) when used in conjunction with phosphinate; their main advantage is related to the enhancement of compactness of the char layer formed. Diphosphonium clay is instead effective in further improving the fire behaviour of the foams because of the flame retardancy action of phosphonium: both PHRR and THE were decreased. The analysis of cone calorimeter data showed that clays act through physical effect constituting a barrier at the surface which is effective in preventing or slowing the diffusion of volatiles and oxygen, while phosphinate and phosphonium are more effective owing to their combined action in both condensed and gas phases.  相似文献

A monomer, acryloxyethyl phenoxy phosphorodiethyl amidate (AEPPA), was synthesized and characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR) and 31P NMR. The copolymer with various amounts of styrene (St) was obtained by the free radical bulk polymerization between AEPPA and St, and characterized using 1H NMR. The thermal properties of the copolymers were investigated with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in air and nitrogen atmosphere, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The TGA results in air indicated the copolymers with AEPPA show higher thermal stability than those without AEPPA. However, the TGA results in nitrogen showed that the decomposition temperature decreased and the char residue increased with the increase of AEPPA. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the copolymers from DSC indicated that a inverse proportion was observed between Tg and the amount of AEPPA incorporated. The flammability of the copolymers was evaluated by microscale combustion calorimeter (MCC). The MCC results showed that AEPPA can decrease the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and the heat release capacity (HRC), and the sample CP10 shows the lowest PHRR and HRC.  相似文献

Cadmium sulfide nano particles, both hollow spheres (CdS‐HS) and rods (CdS‐NR), were synthesized by ultrasonic and solvothermal processes, respectively, and characterized by XRD and SEM. The effect of the two kinds of nano particles on flammability was investigated using the cone calorimeter and microscale combustion calorimeter. The incorporation of small amount of CdS nano particles (1 wt.%, 3 wt.%, 5 wt.%) leads to a reduction in the peak heat release rate (PHRR) compared to pristine PS; CdS‐NR is more efficient in reducing the PHRR. CdS nano particles are less effective in reducing the PHRR of PMMA. Thermal stability of PS/CdS and PMMA/CdS nanocomposites was studied by TGA. The TGA results show that the addition of the nano particles mainly increases thermal stability of PS and PMMA at high temperatures. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Phosphorus-modified siloxanes monomer DOPO-IPDI-AMEO (DIA) was synthesized and characterized by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (H NMR), 31P NMR, and Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR). It hydrolyzed and grew an organic–inorganic hybrid coating on the surface of cotton fabrics via sol–gel process. The conversion of gel reaction was characterized by solid-state 29Si NMR. The effect of the modified organic–inorganic hybrid materials on thermal properties of cotton fabrics was investigated by thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, real time Fourier transform infrared (RT-FTIR), and microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC) experiments. In addition, thermogravimetry-Fourier transform infrared spectra (TG-FTIR) were used to investigate the released degradation products. The characterization information represented that DIA has been prepared successfully. Also the conversion of gel reaction was fairly high. The TG data showed that char residues increased with the addition of the DIA coating. While the peak heat release rate (PHRR) decreased with the presence of the coating in MCC test. Moreover, the flammable degradation products dropped obviously, which can be observed from the data of TG-FTIR.  相似文献

Two-scale tests, microscale and bench scale, are conducted to analyze the flammability of a flexible polyurethane foam. Microscale tests include simultaneous thermal analysis coupled to Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and microscale combustion calorimeter (MCC). Evolved gas components, heat release rate per unit mass, total heat release, derived heat release capacity, and minimum ignition temperature are obtained. Bench scale tests are performed on cone calorimeter. Peak heat release rate per unit area, effective heat of combustion, minimum incident heat flux for ignition, and total heat release per unit area of different incident heat fluxes are obtained. FO-category of the PU foam is estimated by multiple discriminant function analysis based on the results of cone calorimeter test. The relationship between the two-scale tests is analyzed. The minimum ignition temperatures derived from multi heating rate MCC tests are used to predict the time to ignition and compared with the results from cone calorimeter tests. This PU foam is evaluated as a high fire hazard polymer having low heat release capacity, low ignition temperature, and short ignition time.

A flame-retardant epoxy resin (EP) was synthesized based on a novel reactive phosphorus-containing monomer, 4-[(5,5-dimethyl-2-oxide-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinan-4-yl)oxy]-phenol (DODPP), and its structures were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR and 31P NMR spectra. The DODPP-EP3/LWPA (low molecular weight polyamide), which contains 2.5% phosphorus, can reach UL-94 V-0 rating and a limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 30.2%. The thermal properties and burning behaviours of cured epoxy resins were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetry (TG), LOI, UL-94 tests and cone calorimetry. The morphologies of residues of cured epoxy resins were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). DSC shows that the glass-transition temperatures of cured epoxy resins decrease with increasing phosphorus content. TGA shows that the onset decomposition temperatures and the maximum-rate decomposition temperatures decrease, while char yields increase, with the increase of phosphorus content. The data from the cone calorimeter tests give the evidence that heat release rate (HRR), peak heat release rate (PHRR), average heat release rate (Av-HRR), average mass loss rate (Av-MLR) and the fire growth rate index (FIGRA) decrease significantly for DODPP-EP3/LWPA. SEM shows that the DODPP-EP3/LWPA forms lacunaris and compact charred layers which inhibit the transmission of heat during combustion.  相似文献

ZHS@ Mg‐Al‐LDH and ZHS@α‐ZrP hybrid materials were prepared by electrostatically loading zinc hydroxystannate (ZHS) on the layered compounds (Mg‐Al‐LDH and α‐ZrP) in this work. With the addition of 2 wt% of the two hybrid materials to epoxy resin (EP), respectively, the fire hazard of EP and its composites were investigated. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) of ZHS@ Mg‐Al‐LDH/EP composite increased by 19.0% compared with pure EP, while its peak heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release rate (THR), and peak smoke release rate (SPR) decreased by 48.2%, 20.8%, and 21.6%, respectively, evidenced by the results of the LOI test and cone calorimetry test (CCT). The LOI of ZHS@α‐ZrP/EP composite increased by 20.4%, and its PHRR, THR, and SPR decreased by 47.7%, 21.4%, and 27.1%, respectively. Both hybrid materials showed prominent flame retardant and smoke suppressing properties. In addition, through the analysis of the TG‐IR and Raman spectrum of residual char, the specific mechanism of flame retardance and smoke suppression was explored.  相似文献
