The quality of the mesh used in the finite element discretizations will affect the efficiency of solving the discreted linear systems. The usual algebraic solvers except multigrid method do not consider the effect of the grid geometry and the mesh quality on their convergence rates. In this paper, we consider the hierarchical quadratic discretizations of three‐dimensional linear elasticity problems on some anisotropic hexahedral meshes and present a new two‐level method, which is weakly independent of the size of the resulting problems by using a special local block Gauss–Seidel smoother, that is LBGS_v iteration when used for vertex nodes or LBGS_m iteration for midside nodes. Moreover, we obtain the efficient algebraic multigrid (AMG) methods by applying DAMG (AMG based on distance matrix) or DAMG‐PCG (PCG with DAMG as a preconditioner) to the solution of the coarse level equation. The resulting AMG methods are then applied to a practical example as a long beam. The numerical results verify the efficiency and robustness of the proposed AMG algorithms. We construct an algebraic multigrid (AMG) based preconditioner for the reduced Hessian of a linear‐quadratic optimization problem constrained by an elliptic partial differential equation. While the preconditioner generalizes a geometric multigrid preconditioner introduced in earlier works, its construction relies entirely on a standard AMG infrastructure built for solving the forward elliptic equation, thus allowing for it to be implemented using a variety of AMG methods and standard packages. Our analysis establishes a clear connection between the quality of the preconditioner and the AMG method used. The proposed strategy has a broad and robust applicability to problems with unstructured grids, complex geometry, and varying coefficients. The method is implemented using the Hypre package and several numerical examples are presented.  相似文献

In this paper, we will discuss the geometric‐based algebraic multigrid (AMG) method for two‐dimensional linear elasticity problems discretized using quadratic and cubic elements. First, a two‐level method is proposed by analyzing the relationship between the linear finite element space and higher‐order finite element space. And then a geometric‐based AMG method is obtained with the existing solver used as a solver on the first coarse level. The resulting AMG method is applied to some typical elasticity problems including the plane strain problem with jumps in Young's modulus. The results of various numerical experiments show that the proposed AMG method is much more robust and efficient than a classical AMG solver that is applied directly to the high‐order systems alone. Moreover, we present the corresponding theoretical analysis for the convergence of the proposed AMG algorithms. These theoretical results are also confirmed by some numerical tests. Spectral element schemes for the solution of elliptic boundary value problems are considered. Preconditioning methods based on finite difference and finite element schemes are implemented. Numerical experiments show that inverting the preconditioner by a single multigrid iteration is most efficient and that the finite difference preconditioner is superior to the finite element one for both definite and indefinite problems. A multigrid preconditioner is also derived from the finite difference preconditioner and is found suitable for the CGS acceleration method. It is pointed out that, for the finite difference and finite element preconditioners, CGS does not always converge to the accurate algebraic solution. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The present paper deals with element‐based algebraic multigrid (AMGe) methods that target linear systems of equations coming from finite element discretizations of elliptic partial differential equations. The individual element information (element matrices and element topology) is the main input to construct the AMG hierarchy. We study a number of variants of the spectral agglomerate AMGe method. The core of the algorithms relies on element agglomeration utilizing the element topology (built recursively from fine to coarse levels). The actual selection of the coarse degrees of freedom is based on solving a large number of local eigenvalue problems. Additionally, we investigate strategies for adaptive AMG as well as multigrid cycles that are more expensive than the V‐cycle utilizing simple interpolation matrices and nested conjugate gradient (CG)‐based recursive calls between the levels. The presented algorithms are illustrated with an extensive set of experiments based on a matlab implementation of the methods. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

With the ubiquity of large‐scale computing resources has come significant attention to practical details of fast algorithms for the numerical solution of partial differential equations. Included in this group are the class of multigrid and algebraic multigrid algorithms that are effective solvers for many of the large matrix problems arising from the discretization of elliptic operators. Algebraic multigrid (AMG) is especially effective for many problems with discontinuous coefficients, discretized on unstructured grids, or over complex geometries. While much effort has been invested in improving the practical performance of AMG, little theoretical understanding of this performance has emerged. This paper presents a two‐level convergence theory for a reduction‐based variant of AMG, called AMGr, which is particularly appropriate for linear systems that have M‐matrix‐like properties. For situations where less is known about the problem matrix, an adaptive version of AMGr that automatically determines the form of the reduction needed by the AMGr process is proposed. The adaptive cycle is shown, in both theory and practice, to yield an effective AMGr algorithm.

A typical approach to decrease computational costs and memory requirements of classical algebraic multigrid methods is to replace a conservative coarsening algorithm and short‐distance interpolation on a fixed number of fine levels by an aggressive coarsening with a long‐distance interpolation. Although the quality of the resulting algebraic multigrid grid preconditioner often deteriorates in terms of convergence rates and iteration counts of the preconditioned iterative solver, the overall performance can improve substantially. We investigate here, as an alternative, a possibility to replace the classical aggressive coarsening by aggregation, which is motivated by the fact that the convergence of aggregation methods can be independent of the problem size provided that the number of levels is fixed. The relative simplicity of aggregation can lead to improved solution and setup costs. The numerical experiments show the relevance of the proposed combination on both academic and benchmark problems in reservoir simulation from oil industry. Coarsening is a crucial component of algebraic multigrid (AMG) methods for iteratively solving sparse linear systems arising from scientific and engineering applications. Its application largely determines the complexity of the AMG iteration operator. Usually, high operator complexities lead to fast convergence of the AMG method; however, they require additional memory and as such do not scale as well in parallel computation. In contrast, although low operator complexities improve parallel scalability, they often lead to deterioration in convergence. This study introduces a new type of coarsening strategy called algebraic interface‐based coarsening that yields a better balance between convergence and complexity for a class of multi‐scale sparse matrices. Numerical results for various model‐type problems and a radiation hydrodynamics practical application are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed AMG solver.  相似文献

This paper presents parallel preconditioners and multigrid solvers for solving linear systems of equations arising from stochastic polynomial chaos formulations of the diffusion equation with random coefficients. These preconditioners and solvers are extensions of the preconditioner developed in an earlier paper for strongly coupled systems of elliptic partial differential equations that are norm equivalent to systems that can be factored into an algebraic coupling component and a diagonal differential component. The first preconditioner, which is applied to the norm equivalent system, is obtained by sparsifying the inverse of the algebraic coupling component. This sparsification leads to an efficient method for solving these systems at the large scale, even for problems with large statistical variations in the random coefficients. An extension of this preconditioner leads to stand‐alone multigrid methods that can be applied directly to the actual system rather than to the norm equivalent system. These multigrid methods exploit the algebraic/differential factorization of the norm equivalent systems to produce variable‐decoupled systems on the coarse levels. Moreover, the structure of these methods allows easy software implementation through re‐use of robust high‐performance software such as the Hypre library package. Two‐grid matrix bounds will be established, and numerical results will be given. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We present and analyze a robust preconditioned conjugate gradient method for the higher order Lagrangian finite element systems of a class of elliptic problems. An auxiliary linear element stiffness matrix is chosen to be the preconditioner for higher order finite elements. Then an algebraic multigrid method of linear finite element is applied for solving the preconditioner. The optimal condition number which is independent of the mesh size is obtained. Numerical experiments confirm the efficiency of the algorithm.  相似文献

We present a comparison of different multigrid approaches for the solution of systems arising from high‐order continuous finite element discretizations of elliptic partial differential equations on complex geometries. We consider the pointwise Jacobi, the Chebyshev‐accelerated Jacobi, and the symmetric successive over‐relaxation smoothers, as well as elementwise block Jacobi smoothing. Three approaches for the multigrid hierarchy are compared: (1) high‐order h‐multigrid, which uses high‐order interpolation and restriction between geometrically coarsened meshes; (2) p‐multigrid, in which the polynomial order is reduced while the mesh remains unchanged, and the interpolation and restriction incorporate the different‐order basis functions; and (3) a first‐order approximation multigrid preconditioner constructed using the nodes of the high‐order discretization. This latter approach is often combined with algebraic multigrid for the low‐order operator and is attractive for high‐order discretizations on unstructured meshes, where geometric coarsening is difficult. Based on a simple performance model, we compare the computational cost of the different approaches. Using scalar test problems in two and three dimensions with constant and varying coefficients, we compare the performance of the different multigrid approaches for polynomial orders up to 16. Overall, both h‐multigrid and p‐multigrid work well; the first‐order approximation is less efficient. For constant coefficients, all smoothers work well. For variable coefficients, Chebyshev and symmetric successive over‐relaxation smoothing outperform Jacobi smoothing. While all of the tested methods converge in a mesh‐independent number of iterations, none of them behaves completely independent of the polynomial order. When multigrid is used as a preconditioner in a Krylov method, the iteration number decreases significantly compared with using multigrid as a solver. The constant γ of the strengthened Cauchy–Bunyakowski–Schwarz (CBS) inequality plays a fundamental role in the convergence rate of multilevel iterative methods. The main purpose of this work is to give an estimate of the constant γ for a three‐dimensional elasticity system. The theoretical results obtained are practically important for the successful implementation of the finite element method to large‐scale modelling of complicated structures as they allow us to construct optimal order algebraic multilevel iterative solvers for a wide class of real‐life elasticity problems. An algebraic Newton-multigrid method is proposed in order to efficiently solve systems of nonlinear reaction-diffusion problems with stochastic coefficients. These problems model the conversion of starch into sugars in growing apples. The stochastic system is first converted into a large coupled system of deterministic equations by applying a stochastic Galerkin finite element discretization. This method leads to high-order accurate stochastic solutions. A stable and high-order time discretization is obtained by applying a fully implicit Runge-Kutta method. After Newton linearization, a point-based algebraic multigrid solution method is applied. In order to decrease the computational cost, alternative multigrid preconditioners are presented. Numerical results demonstrate the convergence properties, robustness and efficiency of the proposed multigrid methods.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the numerical study of an algebraic multigrid preconditioner for complex symmetric system matrices. We use several different Krylov subspace methods as an outer iteration, namely the QMR method proposed by Freund and Nachtigal, the BiCGCR method of Clemens, and the CSYM method of Bunse-Gerstner and Stoever. In addition, we compare the results with the standard Jacobi preconditioner for complex symmetric problems. We test our approach on the numerical simulation of high-voltage insulators.  相似文献

The numerical study of exterior acoustics problems is usually carried out in the frequency domain. Finite element analyses often require the solution of large‐scale algebraic linear systems. For very large problems, sometimes the time domain is used. Implicit time integration requires linear system solves, but these are often far easier than those from the frequency domain. This paper shows a connection between a spectral transformation preconditioner and a frequency shift time integration. This preconditioner is close to the shifted Laplace preconditioner. The preconditioned iterative method appears to be faster than time integration. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, we design and analyze an algebraic multigrid method for a condensed finite element system on criss-cross grids and then provide a convergence analysis. Criss-cross grid finite element systems represent a large class of finite element systems that can be reduced to a smaller system by first eliminating certain degrees of freedoms. The algebraic multigrid method that we construct is analogous to many other algebraic multigrid methods for more complicated problems such as unstructured grids, but, because of the specialty of our problem, we are able to provide a rigorous convergence analysis to our algebraic multigrid method. Interior point methods usually rely on iterative methods to solve the linear systems of large scale problems. The paper proposes a hybrid strategy using groups for the preconditioning of these iterative methods. The objective is to solve large scale linear programming problems more efficiently by a faster and robust computation of the preconditioner. In these problems, the coefficient matrix of the linear system becomes ill conditioned during the interior point iterations, causing numerical difficulties to find a solution, mainly with iterative methods. Therefore, the use of preconditioners is a mandatory requirement to achieve successful results. The paper proposes the use of a new columns ordering for the splitting preconditioner computation, exploring the sparsity of the original matrix and the concepts of groups. This new preconditioner is designed specially for the final interior point iterations; a hybrid approach with the controlled Cholesky factorization preconditioner is adopted. Case studies show that the proposed methodology reduces the computational times with the same quality of solutions when compared to previous reference approaches. Furthermore, the benefits are obtained while preserving the sparse structure of the systems. These results highlight the suitability of the proposed approach for large scale problems.  相似文献

In this paper, an iterative solution method for a fourth‐order accurate discretization of the Helmholtz equation is presented. The method is a generalization of that presented in (SIAM J. Sci. Comput. 2006; 27 :1471–1492), where multigrid was employed as a preconditioner for a Krylov subspace iterative method. The multigrid preconditioner is based on the solution of a second Helmholtz operator with a complex‐valued shift. In particular, we compare preconditioners based on a point‐wise Jacobi smoother with those using an ILU(0) smoother, we compare using the prolongation operator developed by de Zeeuw in (J. Comput. Appl. Math. 1990; 33 :1–27) with interpolation operators based on algebraic multigrid principles, and we compare the performance of the Krylov subspace method Bi‐conjugate gradient stabilized with the recently introduced induced dimension reduction method, IDR(s). These three improvements are combined to yield an efficient solver for heterogeneous problems. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
