The effects of nucleating agents (NAs) on fracture toughness of injection‐molded isotactic poly(propylene)/ethylene‐propylene‐diene terpolymer (PP/EPDM) were studied in this work. Compared with PP/EPDM blends without any NA, PP/EPDM/NA blends show very small and homogeneous PP spherulites. As we expected, PP/EPDM blends nucleated with β‐phase NA aryl amides compound (TMB‐5) present not only a significant enhancement in toughness but also a promotion of brittle‐ductile transition. However, the addition of α‐phase NA 1,3:2,4‐bis(3,4‐dimethylbenzylidene) sorbitol (DMDBS) has no apparent effect on the toughness of the blends. The impact‐fractured surface morphologies of such samples were analyzed via scanning electronic microscope (SEM). More detail work about the toughening mechanisms of elastomer and NA based on elastomer particles size and matrix crystal structures were carried out. Our results suggest that, besides the crystal structures of matrix, the elastomer particles size and size distribution plays an important role in controlling the toughening effect of nucleated PP/elastomer blends. The smaller the elastomer particles size and lower the polydispersity, the more apparent the synergistic toughening effect of NA and elastomer is. This investigation provides a fresh insight into the understanding of toughening mechanism of elastomers in PP blends and facilitates to the design of super toughened PP materials. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, the nonisothermal crystallization and subsequent melting behaviors of polypropylene (PP) nucleated with different nucleating agents (NAs) have been studied. α‐phase NA 1,3:2,4‐bis (3,4‐dimethylbenzylidene) sorbitol (DMDBS, Millad 3988), β‐phase NA aryl amides compound (TMB‐5), and their compounds were introduced into PP matrix, respectively. The results show that the nonisothermal crystallization behaviors and crystalline structures of PP with compounded NAs are dependent on the composition of NAs. In the sample of PP with 0.1 wt % DMDBS and 0.1 wt % TMB‐5, the nucleation efficiency (NE) of TMB‐5 is much higher than that of DMDBS and PP crystallizes mainly nucleated by TMB‐5, and in this condition, β‐phase PP is the main crystallization structure. For the sample of PP with 0.2 wt % DMDBS and 0.2 wt % TMB‐5, 0.2 wt % DMDBS has higher NE than 0.2 wt % TMB5, and α‐phase is the main crystalline structure. The cooling rate is proved to be very important in controlling the nonisothermal crystallization behavior and the final crystalline structure of nucleated PP. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, a considerable low‐temperature toughness enhancement of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was achieved by adding 30 wt% ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber (EPDM) as well as traces of β‐nucleating agent (β‐NAs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The impact strength of the iPP/30 wt% EPDM blend with 0.1 wt% β‐NAs reached 6.57 kJ/m2 at ?20°C, over 2.5 times of pure iPP. A slightly improved impact strength was further found in the β‐nucleated iPP/30 wt% EPDM at the presence of 0.05 wt% CNTs. The presence of traces of CNTs, β‐NAs, and EPDM displayed synergistic low‐temperature toughness reinforcement effect on the iPP blends. The underlying toughening mechanism was attributed to the formation of a great amount of voids and plastic deformation of iPP matrix affected by CNTs, β‐NAs, and EPDM. Our work provided a feasible strategy to significantly increase the low‐temperature toughness of iPP.  相似文献

Previous work showed that annealing induced the great improvement of fracture resistance of β‐iPP, relating to the decreased number of chain segments in the amorphous region. To further prove the rationality of this observation, in this work, the ethylene‐octene copolymer (POE) toughened isotactic polypropylene (iPP) blends with or without β‐phase nucleating agent (β‐NA) were adopted and the changes of microstructure and fracture resistance during the annealing process were further investigated comparatively. The results showed that, whether for the α‐phase crystalline structure (non‐nucleated) or for the β‐phase crystalline structure (β‐NA nucleated) in iPP matrix, annealing can induce the dramatic improvement of fracture resistance at a certain annealing temperature (120–140 °C for β‐NA nucleated blends whereas 120–150 °C for non‐nucleated blends). Especially, non‐nucleated blends exhibit more apparent variations in fracture resistance compared with β‐NA nucleated blends during the annealing process. The phase morphology of elastomer, supermolecular structure of matrix, the crystalline structure including the degree of crystallinity and the relative content of β‐phase, and the relaxation of chain segments were investigated to explore the toughening mechanism of the samples after being annealed. It was proposed that, even if the content of elastomer is very few, the excellent fracture resistance can be easily achieved through adjusting the numbers of chain segments in the amorphous phase by annealing. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nucleation characteristics of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) nucleated by the α/β compounded nucleating agents (NAs) were investigated by wide‐angle X‐ray scattering, differential scanning calorimetry and mechanical testing. The results showed that the nucleation effect of the α/β compounded NAs depends on not only nucleation efficiency (NE) of individual β and α NAs and their ratios but also the processing conditions, especially the cooling rates. The nucleating characteristics of the α/β compounded NAs can be illustrated by competitive nucleation. The NA with high NE played a leading role during iPP crystallization even at a low weight ratio and at different cooling rates. The stiffness and toughness of iPP can be simultaneously improved by using suitable compositions at the appropriate ratios. Finally, the nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of iPP nucleated with the α/β compounded NAs was described by Caze method and the crystallization activation energy of nucleated iPP was calculated by Kissinger equation. The result indicated that the crystal growth pattern of nucleated iPP was heterogeneous nucleation followed by three‐dimension spherical growth. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Sodium 2,2′‐methylene‐bis(4,6‐di‐tert‐butylphenyl) phosphate (NA40) and N,N‐dicyclohexylterephthalamide (NABW) are high effective nucleating agents for inducing the formation of α‐isotactic polypropylene (α‐iPP) and β‐iPP, respectively. The isothermal crystallization kinetics of iPP nucleated with nucleating agents NABW, NA40/NABW (weight ratio of NA40 to NABW is 1:1) and NA40 were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Avrami equation was adopted to analyze the experimental data. The results show that the addition of NABW, NA40/NABW and NA40 can shorten crystallization half‐time (t1/2) and increase crystallization rate of iPP greatly. In these three nucleating agents, the α nucleating agent NA40 can shorten t1/2 of iPP by the largest extent, which indicates that it has the best nucleation effect. While iPP nucleated with NA40/NABW compounding nucleating agents has shorter t1/2 than iPP nucleated with NABW. The Avrami exponents of iPP and nucleated iPP are close to 3.0, which indicates that the addition of nucleating agents doesn't change the crystallization growth patterns of iPP under isothermal conditions and the crystal growth is heterogeneous three‐dimensional spherulitic growth. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The influences of α/β compound nucleating agents based on octamethylenedicarboxylic dibenzoylhydrazide on crystallization and melting behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) were analyzed. It is found that the crystallization temperatures of nucleated iPP were increased by above 11.0°C and the relative contents of β‐crystals (Kβ ) in iPP reached above 0.40 after addition of compound nucleating agents. The Kβ values depend on cooling rate, crystallization temperature in isothermal crystallization, and the difference between the crystallization temperatures of iPP nucleated by two individual nucleating agents. The nonisothermal crystallization kinetics were studied by Caze method and Mo method, respectively. The effective activation energy was calculated by the Friedman's method. The results illustrate that the half crystallization time was shortened and the crystallization rate was increased obviously after addition of nucleating agents, and the effective activation energy was increased with the relative crystallinity.  相似文献

The effects of preparation method, composition, and thermal condition on formation of β‐iPP in isotactic polypropylene/ethylene–propylene rubber (iPP/EPR) blends were studied using modulated differential scanning calorimeter (MDSC), wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), and phase contrast microscopy (PCM). It was found that the α‐iPP and β‐iPP can simultaneity form in the melt‐blended samples, whereas only α‐iPP exists in the solution‐blended samples. The results show that the formation of β‐iPP in the melt‐blended samples is related to the crystallization temperature and the β‐iPP generally diminishes and finally vanishes when the crystallization temperature moves far from 125 °C. The phenomena that the lower critical temperature of β‐iPP in iPP/EPR obviously increases to 114 °C and the upper critical temperature decreases to 134 °C indicate the narrowing of temperature interval, facilitating the formation of β‐iPP in iPP/EPR. Furthermore, it was found that the amount of β‐iPP in melt‐blended iPP/EPR samples is dependent on the composition and the maximum amount of β‐iPP formed when the composition of iPP/EPR blends is 85:15 in weight. The results through examining the effect of annealing for iPP/EPR samples at melt state indicate that this annealing may eliminate the susceptibility to β‐crystallization of iPP. However, only α‐iPP can be observed in solution‐blended samples subjected to annealing for different time. The PCM images demonstrate that an obvious phase‐separation happens in both melt‐blended and solution‐blended iPP/EPR samples, implying that compared with the disperse degree of EPR in iPP, the preparation method plays a dominant role in formation of β‐iPP. It is suggested that the origin of formation of β‐iPP results from the thermomechanical history of the EPR component in iPP/EPR. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Isotactic polypropylene (i‐PP) can crystallize in different crystal modifications. In this article, the effect of sepiolite (one‐dimensional) and carbon black (three‐dimensional) fillers on the solid‐state drawability of i‐PP is discussed. The cross‐hatched structure of thermodynamically most stable α‐crystal phase in i‐PP does not allow for perfect chain alignment during solid‐state drawing. The β‐phase i‐PP, obtained by addition of specific nucleating agents, crystallizes in a non‐cross‐hatched spherulitic structure and allows more easy drawing. Depending on the filler type, β–α transformation takes place at different draw ratios, as was observed by in situ wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction measurements. It was observed that β‐nucleated i‐PP has a lower yield stress and can be drawn further than i‐PP crystallized in the α‐crystal phase. If added in the right amount, both carbon black and sepiolite have a reinforcing effect on PP tapes. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2014 , 52, 1071–1082  相似文献

Reactive melt blends of an ethylene‐propylene‐diene terpolymer (EPDM) based thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAH‐g‐PP), and nylon 6 were prepared in a single screw extruder and evaluated in terms of morphological, rheological, thermal, dynamic mechanical, and mechanical properties of the blends. It was found that MAH‐g‐PP‐co‐nylon 6 copolymers were in situ formed and acted as effective compatibilizers for polypropylene (PP) and nylon 6. Phase separation of PP and EPDM in TPE increased with the addition and increasing amount of MAH‐g‐PP and nylon 6, leading to decreased glass transition temperature (Tg) of TPE and increased crystalline melting temperature (Tm) of PP. Polypropylene (PP)/organo‐montmorillonite (Org‐MMT) nanocomposites toughened with maleated styrene‐ethylene‐butylene‐styrene (SEBS‐g‐MA) were prepared via melt compounding. The structure, mechanical properties, and dynamic mechanical properties of PP/SEBS‐g‐MA blends and their nanocomposites were investigated by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), tensile, and impact tests. XRD traces showed that Org‐MMT promoted the formation of β‐phase PP. The degree of crystallinity of PP/SEBS‐g‐MA blends and their nanocomposites were determined from the wide angle X‐ray diffraction via profile fitting method. POM experiments revealed that Org‐MMT particles served as nucleating sites, resulting in a decrease of the spherulite size. The essential work of fracture approach was used to evaluate the tensile fracture toughness of the nanocomposites toughened with elastomer. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To study the brittle–ductile transition (BDT) of polypropylene (PP)/ethylene–propylene–diene monomer (EPDM) blends induced by size, temperature, and time, the toughness of the PP/EPDM blends was investigated over wide ranges of EPDM content, temperature, and strain rate. The toughness of the blends was determined from the tensile fracture energy of the side‐edge notched samples. The concept of interparticle distance (ID) was introduced into this study to probe the size effect on the BDT of PP/EPDM blends, whereas the effect of time corresponded to that of strain rate. The BDT induced by size, temperature, and time was observed in the fracture energy versus ID, temperature, and strain rate. The critical BDT temperatures for various EPDM contents at different initial strain rates were obtained from these transitions. The critical interparticle distance (IDc) increased nonlinearly with increasing temperature, and when the initial strain rate was lower, the IDc was larger. Moreover, the variation of the reciprocal of the initial strain rate with the reciprocal of temperature followed different straight lines for various EPDM contents. These straight lines were with the same slope. Furthermore, a diagram at critical BDT points in three dimensions (ID, T, and initial strain rate) was given for the PP/EPDM blends. The brittle and ductile zones are clearly shown in this diagram. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 42: 1433–1440, 2004  相似文献

By using a commercial β‐nucleating agent (TMB‐5) for polypropylene (PP), it was observed that high β‐crystal content in a compatibilized blend of polypropylene/polyamide‐6 (labeled as Blend‐03 in this work) can be achieved for samples prepared by compression moulding. As β‐PP possesses more superior impact strength then α‐PP, and the β to α transformation is an important mechanism of energy absorption for β‐PP, it is of obvious interest to understand the possibilities of β to α transformation in β‐polypropylene/polyamide‐6 blends. Tensile tests were performed at temperatures of 20, 30, 40, and 50 °C, and the occurrence of β to α transformation was monitored by differential scanning calorimeter and wide angle X‐ray diffraction measurements. It was observed that the β to α transformation in Blend‐03 could only be activated at elevated tensile testing temperatures. This was related to the increase in tensile elongation at break with the increase in tensile testing temperature. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Positron annihilation lifetime measurements were performed on pure polypropylene (PP), ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) rubber, and their blends PP/EPDM with a series of EPDM volume fraction ϕ (= 10–40%). A numerical Laplace inversion technique (i.e., CONTIN algorithm), was employed to obtain the probability distribution functions (PDF) of free-volume radius. We observed that, first, the average free-volume radius in PP/EPDM blends is generally same as that in PP and is much smaller than that in EPDM. Second, the standard deviation σR or the width of the free-volume radius PDF in the blend decreases with ϕ in the region of ϕ = 10ndash;30%, and it increases when ϕ increases from 30% to 40%. The difference in the σR of the blend and the calculated value σc R according to the simple-mixing rule of PP and EPDM is interpreted by the existence of the two-phase interaction (i.e., the residual thermal pressure and shear stress between PP and EPDM phases in the PP/EPDM blends). The correlation between σR, which indicates the interaction of two phases, and the impact strength of PP/EPDM blends was found and discussed. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In this article, our main goal is to combine hyperbranched polymer with β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) to establish a novel functional polymer species with core‐shell structure and supramolecular system for further application in inclusion technologies and the complex drugs delivery system. Therefore, two β‐CD polymer brushes based on hyperbranched polycarbosilane (HBP) as a hydrophobic core and poly(N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMA) carrying β‐CD units as a hydrophilic shell were synthesized. Hyperbranched polycarbosilane macroinitiator carrying ? Cl groups (HBP‐Cl) was also prepared by using 1,1,3,3‐tetrmethyldisiloxane, allyl alcohol, and chloroacetyl chloride as reagents. The molecular structures of HBP‐Cl macroinitiator and β‐CD polymer brushes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR) spectroscopies, size exclusion chromatography/multi‐angle laser light scattering (SEC/MALLS) and laser particle size analyzer. The results indicate that the grafted chain length of two β‐CD polymer brushes can be controlled by changing the feed ratio. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results show that two β‐CD polymer brushes have two glass transition temperatures (Tgs) from a hydrophobic core part and a hydrophilic shell part, respectively, and the Tg from PDMA is higher than that of HBP‐g‐PDMA. Thermalgravimetric analyzer (TGA) analysis indicates that the thermostability of two β‐CD polymer brushes is higher than that of HBP, but is lower than that of HBP‐g‐PDMA. Using phenolphthalein (PP) as a guest molecule, molecular inclusion behaviors for two β‐CD polymer brushes were studied. It reveals that two β‐CD polymer brushes possess molecular inclusion capability in PP buffer solution with a fixed concentration. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The solid phase transition mechanism of α‐ to β‐form crystal upon specific treating with supercritical CO2 + cosolvent on original pure α and mixed (α+β) form syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) was investigated, using wide angle X‐ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry measurements as a function of temperature, pressure, and cosolvent content. As in the supercritical CO2, sPS in supercritical CO2 + cosolvent underwent solid phase transitions from α‐ to β‐form, and higher temperature or higher pressure favored this transformation. Due to the higher dipole moment of acetone, small amounts of acetone used as cosolvent with CO2 made the transition of α‐ to β‐form occur at lower temperature and pressure than in supercritical CO2, and made the α‐form crystal completely transform to β‐form in the original mixed (α+β) form, whereas ethanol did not. The original β‐form crystal in the original mixed (α+β) form sample acted as the nucleus of new β‐form crystal in the presence of cosolvent as it did in supercritical CO2, when compared with the original pure α‐form sample. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The orientation behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) in α‐ and β‐crystal form was investigated by rheo‐optical Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. This method enabled quantification of the degree of orientation as a feature of structural changes during uniaxial elongation in not only the crystalline phase but also the amorphous one. Molecular orientation mechanisms can be successfully derived from experimental results. Generally, three mechanisms were detected for iPP: (1) interlamellar separation in the amorphous phase, (2) interlamellar slip and lamellar twisting at small elongations, and (3) intralamellar slip at high elongations. The third mechanism was favored by α‐PP, whereas β‐PP favored the second mechanism, which, in fact, was responsible for the different mechanical properties of both materials at the macroscopic level. On the other hand, crystallization conditions may have significantly affected the amorphous orientation. Nevertheless, for both iPP types the chains in the amorphous phase always oriented less than did those in the crystalline phase. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two‐dimensional NOESY 1H NMR, isothermal titration calorimetric (ITC), and rheological studies of host–guest complexation by β‐cyclodextrin, β‐CD, and the β‐CD groups of the linked β‐CD dimers, β‐CD2ur and β‐CD2su and trimers, β‐CD3bz and β‐CDen3bz, of the dodecyl, C12, substituents of the 3.0% substituted poly(acrylate), PAAC12, in aqueous solution are reported. Complexations by β‐CD, β‐CD2ur, β‐CD2su, β‐CD3bz, and β‐CDen3bz of the C12 substituents of PAAC12 in 0.2 wt % solution exhibit complexation constants 10?4K11 (298.2 K) = 0.83, 5.80, 4.40, 15.0, and 1.50 dm3 mol?1, respectively. (The corresponding ΔH11 and TΔS11 show a linear relationship.) The rheologically determined zero‐shear viscosities of 3.3 wt % aqueous solutions of PAAC12 alone and in the presence of β‐CD, β‐CD2ur, β‐CD2su, β‐CD3bz, and β‐CDen3bz (where the β‐CD groups and C12 substituents are equimolar) are 0.016, 0.03, 0.12, 0.25, 0.12, and 0.08 Pa s (298.2 K), respectively, and show PAAC12 to form interstrand cross‐links through complexation. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The transition behaviour of the blends of isotactic polypropylene (i-PP) with ethylene-propylene terpolymer (EPDM) containing 42 wt% propylene was investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis technique (DMA). Owing to its high propylene content, EPDM is compatible with i-PP to some degree. The interaction between the two components was strengthened. As expected, for partially compatible system the glass transition temperature of i-PP in the blends shifted to lower temperature. It was found that there existed two transitions, αEPDM and βEPDM, for the EPDM used in this work. The former was considered to be the glass transition of the random chain segments of EPDM, while the latter the local motion of the long ethylene sequences in EPDM. The unusual transition behaviour of αEPDM in the blends was explained in terms of the greater thermal expansion of EPDM and the compatibility of the two components. On the other hand, the βEPDM changed with the composition of the blends in a regular manner.  相似文献

The fragmentation and dispersion in molten polypropylene (PP) of several pre-crosslinked and plasticized ethylene–propylene–diene terpolymer (EPDM) networks was studied. Thus, the morphologies and mechanical properties of PP/EPDM blends having similar compositions but made from either un-crosslinked, pre-crosslinked or dynamic-crosslinked EPDMs were compared. The results first highlight the importance of the gel fraction of the pre-crosslinked EPDMs, as well as the impact of the thermoplastic matrix proportion on the quality of the dispersion of such networks. As a result, pre-crosslinked EPDM having a gel fraction below gEPDM = 0.7 can be finely and homogeneously fragmented and dispersed in presence of PP. It can be then admitted a collision–coalescence–separation type erosion mechanism of the EPDM domains. Nevertheless, contrarily to some theoretical model expectations, a partial fragmentation of the chemical networks was always observed even at very high crosslink density (gEPDM > 0.7). Finally, the blends crosslinked under shearing (dynamic-crosslinked) showed a clear mechanical property synergy due to their fine and homogeneous morphology coupled with the full crosslinking of the elastomer. In the end, these results brought significant information on TPV morphology stabilization and their related mechanical properties.  相似文献
