Thermal field‐flow fractionation (ThFFF) is used as a novel fractionation technique to investigate the molecular heterogeneity of PB‐b‐PVP‐b‐PtBMA triblock copolymers. Such copolymers cause major problems in liquid chromatography due to very strong polar interactions with the stationary phase. ThFFF separates the copolymers with regard to size and/or chemical composition based on the normal and thermal diffusion coefficients. The separation mechanism in ThFFF and the chemical composition of the separated species is elucidated by online 1H NMR. Based on the compositional analysis and a calibration of the system with the respective homopolymers, the samples are quantified regarding their molar masses, chemical compositions, and microstructures providing comprehensive information on the complex structure of these block copolymers.

Summary: Dissipative particle dynamics simulations are performed on the distribution of binary nanoparticle mixtures in lamellar diblock copolymers. The results show that the self‐assembly of nanoparticle mixtures in polymer matrix is a cooperative assembly that is affected by various factors, providing molecular‐level information for the rational design of new polymer nanocomposites with tailored properties.

An aqueous solution of a poly(ethylene glycol)‐polycaprolactone‐poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG‐PCL‐PEG) with a composition of EG13CL23EG13 undergoes multiple transitions, from sol‐to‐gel (hard gel)‐to‐sol‐to‐gel (soft gel)‐to‐sol, in the concentration range 20.0∼35.0 wt.‐%. Through dynamic mechanical analysis, UV‐vis spectrophotometry, small angle X‐ray scattering, differential scanning calorimetry, microcalorimetry and 13C NMR spectroscopy, the mechanism of these transitions was investigated. The hard gel and soft gel are distinguished by the crystalline and amorphous state of the PCL. The extent of PEG dehydration and the molecular motion of each block also played a critical role in the multiple transitions. This paper suggests a new mechanism for these multiple transitions driven by temperature changes.

Summary: The synthesis and thermal, redox and photoluminescence properties of a soluble donor‐acceptor polyplatinayne with the electron‐accepting silole ring and its model compound are described. The polymer has an optical band gap of 2.10 eV which is much lower than that of thienyl‐ or silyl‐bridged congeners. The incorporation of electron‐accepting silole unit in the metallopolymer main chain creates a new π‐conjugated system that features unique donor‐acceptor characteristics.

A novel pH‐responsive polymer vesicle obtained by the aqueous self‐assembly of carboxy‐terminated hyperbranched polyesters is reported. The synthesis is very simple, just a one‐step esterification of the commercially available hydroxy‐terminated hyperbranched polyester of Boltorn Hx (x = 20, 30, 40) with succinic anhydride. The vesicle size can be controlled from 200 nm to 10 µm by simply adjusting the solution pH as well as the degrees of branching (or generation).

This paper aims to report the fabrication of biodegradable thin films with micro‐domains of cylindrical nanochannels through the solvent‐induced microphase separation of poly(L ‐lactide)‐block‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(L ‐lactide) (PLA‐b‐PEG‐b‐PLA) triblock copolymers with different block ratios. In our experimental scope, an increase in each of the block lengths of the PLA and PEG blocks led to both a variation in the average number density (146 to 32 per 100 µm2) and the size of the micro‐domains (140 to 427 nm). Analyses by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and fluorescence microscopy indicated that the hydrophilic PEG nanochannels were dispersed in the PLA matrix of the PLA‐b‐PEG‐b‐PLA films. We demonstrated that the micro‐domain morphology could be controlled not only by the block length of PEG, but also by the solvent evaporation conditions.

Well‐defined amphiphilic block‐graft copolymers PCL‐b‐[DTC‐co‐(MTC‐mPEG)] with polyethylene glycol methyl ether pendant chains were designed and synthesized. First, monohydroxyl‐terminated macroinitiators PCL‐OH were prepared. Then, ring‐opening copolymerization of 2,2‐dimethyltrimethylene carbonate (DTC) and cyclic carbonate‐terminated PEG (MTC‐mPEG) macromonomer was carried out in the presence of the macroinitiator in bulk to give the target copolymers. All the polymers were characterized by 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The polymers have unimodal molecular weight distributions and moderate polydispersity indexes. The amphiphilic block‐graft copolymers self‐assemble in water forming stable micelle solutions with a narrow size distribution.

Summary: A water‐soluble gold nanoparticle aggregate 2 was prepared by chloroauric acid and a polypseudorotaxane 1 of mono‐6‐thio‐β‐cyclodextrin with poly(propylene glycol) bis(2‐aminopropyl ether) ( ≈ 2 000) in the presence of sodium borohydride in N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) solution. The investigative results indicated that the gold nanoparticle aggregate 2 might act as an efficient DNA‐cleavage reagent.

A series of amphiphilic poly(L ‐leucine)‐block‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(L ‐leucine) (PLL‐PEG‐PLL) hybrid triblock copolymers have been synthesized. All the blocks in this system have good biocompatibility and low toxicity. The PLL‐PEG‐PLL copolymers could self‐assemble into micelles with PLL blocks as the hydrophobic core and PEG blocks as the hydrophilic shell, which were characterized by FT‐IR, 1H NMR, and transmission electron microscopy analysis. The critical micellar concentration of the copolymer was 95.0 mg · L−1. The circular dichroism spectrum shows that the PLL segments adopt a unique α‐helical conformation, which is found to play an important role in controlling the drug release rate. The drug release could be effectively sustained by encapsulation in the micelles. The copolymers may have potential applications in drug delivery.

After synthesizing two chromophores with imine, we prepared acrylic nonlinear optical (NLO) polymers that contained the chromophores for all‐optical wavelength converters in optical fiber communication. The polymers show high d33, 35 pm · V−1, at 1.55 μm (pumping beam), considering their low losses, −3.0 dB · cm−1, at a wavelength of 0.785 μm (near second harmonic signal beam of the pumping beam). This result means that the polymers are good candidates for wavelength converters of an approximately 1.55 μm signal beam.

Single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are pre‐functionalized with a pyridinyl‐based dithioester to undergo a hetero Diels–Alder (HDA) reaction with cyclopentadienyl end‐capped poly(methyl)methacrylate (M n = 2700 g mol−1, PDI = 1.14). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis (EA), and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) evidence the success of the grafting process. The estimated resulting grafting density (from XPS and EA) via the HDA reaction increases by a factor of more than two (0.0774 chains·nm−2 via XPS) compared with typical values obtained via a direct cyclopentadiene driven Diels–Alder conjugation onto non‐functional SWCNTs under similar conditions.

Three‐dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) and poly(p‐methyl styrene) (sPPMS) are synthesized using silica colloidal crystal templates with varied diameters in the range of 548–214 nm, and the effect of polymerization space on the conformation of the resulting 3DOM polymers is investigated by spectroscopy and thermal analysis. In‐situ polymerizations of styrene and p‐methyl styrene within the silica templates induce the resulting 3DOM polymers with different conformations and packing of chains, which are different from those of bulk polymers prepared in the absence of templates. Polymerizations in restricted silica templates result in un‐helixication of 3DOM sPS chains and helixication of 3DOM sPPMS chains.

Summary: A series of novel mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystal miktoarm star rod‐coil block copolymers were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Their architectures {coil conformation of styrene segment and rigid rod conformation of {2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} (MPCS) segment} were confirmed by GPC, 1H NMR, and MALDI‐TOF studies. The liquid crystalline behaviors of the synthesized copolymers are evidenced from POM observation. The liquid crystalline phase depends on the molecular weights of the rigid rod arm of miktoarm star copolymers.

Worm‐like aggregates with a PAA/P4VP complex core and a PEG/PNIPAM mixed shell were prepared in ethanol by the comicellization of poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(acrylic acid) (PEG‐b‐PAA) and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐block‐poly(4‐vinylpyridine) (PNIPAM‐b‐P4VP) through hydrogen‐bonding. The formed aggregates were studied by dynamic light scattering, static light scattering, 1H NMR, and transmission electron microscopy. The length of worm‐like aggregates could be adjusted by changing the weight ratio of W(PNIPAM‐b‐P4VP)/W(PEG‐b‐PAA). When the ratio changed from 20 to 150%, the length changed from about 100 nm to several microns, and the diameter stayed almost unchanged at about 15 nm.

A polymeric film of a biodegradable poly(p‐dioxanone) was grown from 490 nm silica particles by monolayer formation via self‐assembly of hydroxy‐terminated triethoxysilane and subsequent surface‐initiated ring‐opening polymerization of p‐dioxanone. The resulting silica/poly(p‐dioxanone) hybrid particles were characterized by means of 1H NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, field‐emission scanning electron microscopy, and energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy.

A rod‐coil‐rod block copolymer, polyhexylisocyanate‐block‐polystyrene‐block‐polyhexylisocyanate, of controlled molecular weight was synthesized quantitatively via living anionic polymerization using potassium naphthalenide in the presence of sodium tetraphenylborate. The use of K+ as the counterion for the polymerization of styrene, and Na+ (NaBPh4) for the polymerization of isocyanate leads to the formation of a well‐controlled novel triblock copolymer.

The synthesis of primary amine end‐functional poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)s has been achieved by using the Gabriel reaction. Polymerization of tert‐butyl acrylate was first achieved by atom transfer radical polymerization using ethyl‐2‐bromoisobutyrate or paramethoxyphenyl‐2‐bromoisobutyrate as initiator. Both resulting polymers, with a bromide‐end atom, were converted into phthalimido intermediates which then were successfully hydrolyzed using potassium hydroxide in tert‐butyl alcohol to result in poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)s terminated by a primary amine function. End group interconversions were followed by 1H NMR, FT‐IR, and MALDI‐TOF MS measurements. All the results proved that quantitative transformations were achieved at each step. Moreover, the method developed is very easy to carry out.

Summary: A multistep synthetic procedure for preparing novel C60‐anchored two‐armed poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) was developed. First, two‐armed poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) bearing a malonate ester core with well‐controlled molecular weight was synthesized through atom transfer radical polymerization. The effective Bingel reaction between C60 and the well‐defined polymer was then carried out to yield C60‐anchored polymer. GPC, 1H NMR, and UV‐vis spectroscopy indicated that the C60‐anchored polymer was a monosubstituted and ‘closed’ 6,6‐ring‐bridged methanofullerene derivative.

A novel approach to load a hydrophilic bovine serum albumin into drug carriers was proposed in terms of temperature‐programmed “shell‐in‐shell” structures, which were fabricated with poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide), poly(lactide), poly(ethylene glycol), and Au nanoparticles. Spherically well‐defined “shell‐in‐shell” structures were constructed by a modified‐double‐emulsion method (MDEM). The lower critical solubility temperature of the structures was manipulated to 36.4 °C which was confirmed by UV/Vis spectroscopy and DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry).

Summary: Homogeneous films of PI‐b‐PDMAEMA are prepared on top of silicon (100) substrates. The free film surface shows microdomains of PDMAEMA within a PI matrix. These microdomains act as templates for the highly site‐selective synthesis of metal nanoparticles via palladium‐catalyzed electroless nickel plating. The particle formation is studied by atomic force microscopy in tapping mode and implications for a redox reaction and a nanoparticle growth mechanism on the surface of nanopatterned films are discussed.
