The carbon nitride poly(triazine imide) with intercalated bromide ions is a layered, graphitic material of 2D covalently bonded molecular sheets with an exceptionally large gallery height of 3.52 Å due to the intercalated bromide anions. The material can be cleaved both mechanically and chemically into thin sheets and scrolls analogous to the carbon‐only systems graphite and graphene.

A new versatile synthesis strategy for macromonomers has been developed that uses the living ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) with commercial Grubbs first generation ruthenium initiators. Homopolymers as well as diblock copolymers were end‐functionalized with norbornene derivatives to serve as macromonomers. The graft copolymerization of the macromonomers was also carried out employing ROMP. Well‐defined and highly functional graft copolymers are accessible by this new synthetic route.

A kinetic model of the amphiphilic star block copolymerization is developed. The star polymer species, resulting from star polymerization with dendrimer cores and hydrophobic monomers, are used as macroinitiators and initiate the graft polymerization of the hydrophilic monomers. Analytical expressions for the size distributions for the species formed in every step are derived. The method with monomers added to the reaction system in batches decreases the polydispersity index for the products obtained. It reaches a minimum if the monomer feed quantity is equal in every step. Therefore, the dimension and structure of the amphiphilic star block copolymers produced can be designed by using the proposed kinetic mechanism.

Summary: A series of novel mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystal miktoarm star rod‐coil block copolymers were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Their architectures {coil conformation of styrene segment and rigid rod conformation of {2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} (MPCS) segment} were confirmed by GPC, 1H NMR, and MALDI‐TOF studies. The liquid crystalline behaviors of the synthesized copolymers are evidenced from POM observation. The liquid crystalline phase depends on the molecular weights of the rigid rod arm of miktoarm star copolymers.

Summary: Dissipative particle dynamics simulations are performed on the distribution of binary nanoparticle mixtures in lamellar diblock copolymers. The results show that the self‐assembly of nanoparticle mixtures in polymer matrix is a cooperative assembly that is affected by various factors, providing molecular‐level information for the rational design of new polymer nanocomposites with tailored properties.

Well‐defined silica composite nanofibers are generated in a silicification process of self‐assembled poly(ethylene oxide)‐peptide nanotapes. Inspired by biological silica morphogenesis processes the nanotapes exhibit strong binding capabilities for silicic acid. Thus, pre‐hydrolyzed tetramethoxysilane could be used as silica precursor. Very low concentrations (270 µM) and short contact times (10 s) are sufficient to form effectively integrated nano‐composite tapes.

Summary: The synthesis and thermal, redox and photoluminescence properties of a soluble donor‐acceptor polyplatinayne with the electron‐accepting silole ring and its model compound are described. The polymer has an optical band gap of 2.10 eV which is much lower than that of thienyl‐ or silyl‐bridged congeners. The incorporation of electron‐accepting silole unit in the metallopolymer main chain creates a new π‐conjugated system that features unique donor‐acceptor characteristics.

Summary: The polymerization of ε‐caprolactone (CL) in the presence of HCl · Et2O by an activated monomer mechanism was performed to synthesize diblock or triblock copolymers composed of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL). The obtained PCLs had molecular weights close to the theoretical values calculated from the CL to PEG molar ratios and exibited monomodal GPC curves. We successfully prepared PEG and PCL block copolymers by a metal‐free method.

The syntheses of amphiphilic block copolymers are successfully performed in water by chain extension of hydrophilic macromolecules with styrene at 80 °C. The employed strategy is a one‐pot procedure in which poly(acrylic acid), poly(methacrylic acid) or poly(methacrylic acid‐co‐poly(ethylene oxide) methyl ether methacrylate) macroRAFTs are first formed in water using 4‐cyano‐4‐thiothiopropylsulfanyl pentanoic acid (CTPPA) as a chain transfer agent. The resulting macroRAFTs are then directly used without further purification for the RAFT polymerization of styrene in water in the same reactor. This simple and straightforward strategy leads to a very good control of the resulting amphiphilic block copolymers.

The self‐assembly of two types of linear ABA triblock copolymers confined in cylindrical nanopores is studied using simulated annealing. The effects of pore size and block copolymer chain architecture on morphology, chain conformations and bridging fraction are investigated. For the bulk cylinder‐forming copolymers, novel structures such as helices and stacked toroids form, which depend sensitively on the pore size. Several significant differences between the two types of copolymers are predicted and explained based on the differences in their chain conformations and chain architectures. A simple model is proposed to explain the mean square radius of gyration for the bridge and loop chains.

In this work, the formation of two‐compartment micelles from symmetric pentablock copolymers in selective solvents was studied using the dissipative particle dynamics simulation technique, and the effects of block lengths and solvent quality were investigated. The simulations revealed several new morphologies and their formation mechanisms were elucidated at the molecular level, providing useful information that may contribute to the future rational design and synthesis of novel multicompartment micelles with tailored structures.

Numerical SCFT simulations of inhomogeneous polymers at the mesoscale can easily become computationally extremely demanding as the size (spatial resolution) of the simulated 3D system increases, making massively parallel computing a necessity. A new parallel algorithm for large‐scale 3D SCFT simulations of rod‐coil copolymers with interplay between microphase separation and orientational ordering is presented. For large systems, this algorithm scales well up to 1024 processors, achieving more than 200‐fold speedups. While existing SCFT simulations were limited to studying 1D and 2D models, this algorithm is applied to new, intrinsic 3D structures such as a hexagonally arranged columnar morphology that possesses macroscopic chirality arising as a result of spontaneous symmetry breaking.

This is the first of two papers presenting a new mathematical method for modeling bivariate distributions of polymer properties. It is based on the transformation of the infinite mass balances describing the evolution of a two‐dimensional distribution using 2D probability generating functions (pgf). A key step of this method is the inversion of the transforms. In this work, two numerical inversion methods of 2D pgfs are developed and carefully validated. The accuracy obtained with both methods was very satisfactory. The inversion formulas of both methods are simple and easy to implement. A simple copolymerization example is used to show the complete procedure from the derivation of the pgf balances to the recovery of the bivariate molecular weight distribution.

A facile one‐step method has been developed to prepare both superhydrophobic and superoleophilic surfaces of polystyrene (PS) without any chemical modification. A rough film consisting of micro‐bead and nano‐fiber mixed structures is formed by spraying a PS solution onto a large area and any type of substrate. The mixed structures with such unique wettability properties can be used in oil/water separation and as oil sorbents.

Summary: Aliphatic dithiol‐diacid type polythioesters were first enzymatically prepared by the direct polycondensation of hexane‐1,6‐dithiol and diacid diesters using the immobilized lipase from Candida antarctica (lipase CA). As a typical example, diethyl sebacate and hexane‐1,6‐dithiol were polymerized using lipase CA in bulk in the presence of molecular sieves 4A to produce the corresponding polythioester with an of 10 200 in 90% yield. Both the melting and crystallization temperatures of the produced polythioesters were higher when compared to those of the corresponding polyoxyesters. A higher molecular weight polythioester was produced using lipase in a two‐step procedure, i.e., cyclization with subsequent ring‐opening polymerization.

A series of novel temperature and pH responsive block copolymers composed of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly(L ‐lysine) (PLL) were synthesized. The effect of pH and the length of PLL on the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAM, and the self‐assembly of these PLL‐based copolymers induced by temperature and pH changes were investigated by the cloud point method, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). These PNIPAM‐b‐PLL copolymers can self‐assemble into micelle‐like aggregates with PNIPAM as the hydrophobic block at acidic pH and high temperatures; and at alkaline pH and low temperatures, they can self‐assemble into particles with PLL as the hydrophobic block. The copolymers may have potential applications in biotechnological and biomedical areas as drug release carriers.

The synthesis of cationic mono‐(6‐O‐(1‐vinylimidazolium))‐ß‐cyclodextrin with toluenesulfonate as the corresponding anion is described. Free‐radical copolymerization of the resulting host–guest complex with N‐isopropylacrylamide or N,N‐diethylacrylamide yielded copolymers showing a temperature‐controlled solubility window in water. The impact of different anionic guests and salt concentrations on solubility behavior was investigated via turbidity measurements.

A series of amphiphilic poly(L ‐leucine)‐block‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(L ‐leucine) (PLL‐PEG‐PLL) hybrid triblock copolymers have been synthesized. All the blocks in this system have good biocompatibility and low toxicity. The PLL‐PEG‐PLL copolymers could self‐assemble into micelles with PLL blocks as the hydrophobic core and PEG blocks as the hydrophilic shell, which were characterized by FT‐IR, 1H NMR, and transmission electron microscopy analysis. The critical micellar concentration of the copolymer was 95.0 mg · L−1. The circular dichroism spectrum shows that the PLL segments adopt a unique α‐helical conformation, which is found to play an important role in controlling the drug release rate. The drug release could be effectively sustained by encapsulation in the micelles. The copolymers may have potential applications in drug delivery.

Because of the complexity of monomer sequence formation during polymerization, it is necessary to employ programmed synthesis to prepare copolymers with well‐defined sequences. We introduce a computational tool that can generate recipes to synthesize copolymers with pre‐designed monomer sequences. An efficient design strategy was crafted based on analyzing the impact of varying multiple synthesis factors in forced gradient copolymerization on the targeted properties. Finally, the proposed design tool was applied to generate recipes for several different structural gradient copolymers as case studies. It was shown that a recipe that meets certain targets can be designed in minutes. The recipes that are designed can also be tailored according to different application requirements.
