Necessary Condition for a Strong Relative Minimum for Singular Optimal Control

A necessary condition is developed for a strong relative minimum for a first-order singular optimal control. It is shown that the strong condition is identical with the existing weak condition, namely, the generalized Legendre-Clebsch condition. It is conjectured that the strong condition for a second-order singular control will be the same as the corresponding weak condition.     

Generation of linear evolution operators

This paper is devoted to the problem of generation of evolution operators associated with linear evolution equations in a general Banach space. The stability condition is proposed from the viewpoint of finite difference approximations. It is shown that linear evolution operators can be generated even if the stability condition given here is assumed instead of Kato's stability condition.

     

Existence and uniqueness result for multidimensional BSDEs with generators of Osgood type

This paper is interested in solving a multidimensional backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) whose generator satisfies the Osgood condition in y and the Lipschitz condition in z. We establish an existence and uniqueness result of solutions for this kind of BSDEs, which generalizes some known results.     

Asymptotic analysis of the differences between the Stokes-Darcy system with different interface conditions and the Stokes-Brinkman system

We consider the coupling of the Stokes and Darcy systems with different choices for the interface conditions. We show that, comparing results with those for the Stokes-Brinkman equations, the solutions of Stokes-Darcy equations with the Beavers-Joseph interface condition in the one-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional (periodic) cases are more accurate than are those obtained using the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman-Jones interface condition and that both of these are more accurate than solutions obtained using a zero tangential velocity interface condition. The zero tangential velocity interface condition is in turn more accurate than the free-slip interface boundary condition. We also prove that the summation of the quasi-two-dimensional solutions converge so that the conclusions are also valid for the two-dimensional case.

On the Condition of a Complex Eigenvalue under Real Perturbations

We investigate the condition number for a complex eigenvalue of a real matrix under real perturbations. Based on an explicit formula, it is shown that this number is never smaller than times the corresponding condition number with respect to complex perturbations. This result can be generalized to the condition number of an arbitrary complex-valued function under real perturbations. This extends to related condition numbers.

C^0-Sufficiency, Kuiper-Kuo and Thom Conditions for Non-isolated Singularity

In this paper, a criterion on the C^0-sufficiency for a function germ with non-isolated singularity is obtained analogously to that of Kuiper-Kuo for the case of isolated singularities. Moreover, the Kuiper Kuo condition and the Thom condition for an analytic function germ with non-isolated singularity are proved to be equivalent.

A study on preconditioning iterative methods and relativity of pressure in the numerical calculation of fluid flow

This article presents the effect of preconditioning iterative methods on boundary conditions of the pressure‐correction in the numerical computation of fluid flow with known velocity components on all boundaries using the SIMPLE algorithm. In such computation, a set of solutions of the pressure‐correction is indefinite, because only the Neumann condition is imposed on all boundaries. However, solutions become unique if the value of pressure‐correction is fixed at least on one boundary point, and the Dirichlet condition is additionally imposed. Though both conditions must give exactly the same velocity and temperature fields, this problem arises from the relativity of the pressure. The mathematical illustration for this problem is provided using the numerical computation of the natural convection in an enclosure. It is concluded that the preconditioner adopted and the condition that only the Neumann condition on all boundaries is given are effective to reduce the number of iterations in solving the linear system of equations of the pressure‐correction at the computation of the natural convection. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Kuhn–Tucker Conditions for a Convex Programming Problem in Banach Spaces Partially Ordered by Cone with Empty Interior

The existence of saddle point of the Lagrange function for a convex programming problem in Banach spaces ordered by a cone with empty interior is established under a strong simultaneity condition. As a consequence, the Kuhn–Tucker conditions are derived. It is shown that the Slater and the strong simultaneity condition are equivalent if the cone determining the partial order has an interior.
