The present paper deals with the experimental analysis of a strong decelerated turbulent boundary layer developed on a flat plate. The aim of the study was to examine the effects of pressure gradient on a non-equilibrium boundary layer while indicating local areas of equilibrium flow. The effect of the Reynolds number on a turbulent boundary layer developed with matching the external pressure gradient conditions was also analysed. The emphasis was on the analysis of mean flow statistics i.e. mean velocity profiles, streamwise Reynolds stress and the effect of large- and small-scale interactions by analysing the skewness factor and energy isocontours maps. The comparative analysis of the external data indicated that the structure of the turbulent boundary layer depends not only on local effects of pressure gradient but also on the upstream history of the flow. For the same condition of pressure gradient, the increased momentum is observed near the wall with the increase of the Reynolds number at the Incipient Detachment, where increased turbulence production is also observed, leading to the failure of the outer scaling methods. Surprisingly, the effect of the Reynolds number decays at the intermittent transitory detachment where similar profiles were observed. The upper inflection point in the mean profile corresponded well with the outer maximum of the Reynolds stress and zero crossing of skewness factor. Position of this point occurs at different locations, depending on the flow history effects. The last observation demonstrates that the inflection points results from large- and small-scale interactions, which led to the increased convection velocity of small scales near the wall.  相似文献

An experimental study of a fully developed turbulent channel flow and an adverse pressure gradient (APG) turbulent channel flow over smooth and rough walls has been performed using a particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The rough walls comprised two-dimensional square ribs of nominal height, k = 3 mm and pitch, p = 2k, 4k and 8k. It was observed that rib roughness enhanced the drag characteristics, and the degree of enhancement increased with increasing pitch. Similarly, rib roughness significantly increased the level of turbulence production, Reynolds stresses and wall-normal transport of turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress well beyond the roughness sublayer. On the contrary, the distributions of the eddy viscosity, mixing length and streamwise transport of turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress were reduced by wall roughness, especially in the outer layer. Adverse pressure gradient produced a further reduction in the mean velocity (in comparison to the results obtained in the parallel section) but increased the wall-normal extent across which the mean flow above the ribs is spatially inhomogeneous in the streamwise direction. APG also reinforced wall roughness in augmenting the equivalent sand grain roughness height. The combination of wall roughness and APG significantly increased turbulence production and Reynolds stresses except in the immediate vicinity of the rough walls. The transport velocities of the turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress were also augmented by APG across most part of the rough-wall boundary layer. Further, APG enhanced the distributions of the eddy viscosity across most of the boundary layer but reduced the mixing length outside the roughness sublayer.  相似文献

The turbulent/non-turbulent interface (TNTI) in an adverse pressure gradient (APG, β = 1.45) turbulent boundary layer (TBL) is explored here by using direct numerical simulation (DNS) data; β is the Clauser pressure gradient parameter. For comparison, the DNS data for a zero pressure gradient (ZPG) TBL is included. The interface is extracted with an approach based on enstrophy criteria. Depending on the enstrophy, the outer boundary layer flow can be classified into the free stream, boundary layer wake, and intermittent flow regimes. The fractal dimension of the interface is obtained by using the box-counting algorithm, and was found to be constant over a long range of box sizes. The TNTI shows a monofractal behavior. The geometric complexity of a TNTI can be determined in terms of the genus, which is defined as the number of handles in a geometric object. We examine the volume and projection area of the genus of the TNTI to analyze the entrainment process. The geometric complexity of the APG TBL interface and the local entrainment are greater than those of the ZPG TBL, as is evident in the increases in the genus near the interface. The local entrainment velocity is dominantly affected by the viscous diffusion at the interface.  相似文献

The characteristics of turbulent boundary layer flows with adverse pressure gradients (APGs) differ significantly from those of canonical boundary layers. We have investigated the effects of an APG on the higher-order moments and spectra of velocity fluctuations. The local wavelet spectra reveal a large difference in energy-containing frequencies of streamwise and wall-normal components of turbulent velocities, which results in smaller Reynolds shear stress production. Moreover, an analysis of bispectra in the Fourier space has revealed that non-local interactions, consisting of streamwise fluctuating velocity with low frequency and wall-normal velocity with high frequency, occur in the APG flow. However, the small-scale motions are not affected by imposing an APG.  相似文献

An experimental study was conducted to document the turbulence in boundary layers on smooth walls subject to a favorable pressure gradient followed by a zero pressure gradient recovery and an adverse pressure gradient. Two component velocity profiles were acquired along the spanwise centerline of the test section, and velocity fields were obtained at the same locations in streamwise wall-normal and streamwise–spanwise planes using PIV. The FPG was shown to reduce the turbulence in the outer part of the boundary layer, reducing the transport of this turbulence and the effect of sweeps toward the wall. This reduced the inclination angle of the large structures and increased their length scale, particularly in the streamwise and spanwise directions. Recovery from the FPG to a ZPG was rapid. The APG reduced the near wall shear, resulting in a reduced effect of ejections relative to sweeps. The APG had an opposite but smaller effect on the shape and size of structures compared to the FPG.

Riblet films are a passive method of turbulent boundary layer control that can reduce viscous drag. They have been studied with great detail for over 30 years. Although common riblet applications include flows with Adverse Pressure Gradients (APG), nearly all research thus far has been performed in channel flows. Recent research has provided motivation to study riblets in more complicated turbulent flows with claims that riblet drag reduction can double in mild APG common to airfoils at moderate angles of attack. Therefore, in this study, we compare drag reduction by scalloped riblet films between riblets in a zero pressure gradient and those in a mild APG using high-resolution large eddy simulations. In order to gain a fundamental understanding of the relationship between drag reduction and pressure gradient, we simulated several different riblet sizes that encompassed a broad range of s+ (riblet width in wall units), similarly to many previously published experimental studies. We found that there was only a slight improvement in drag reduction for riblets in the mild APG. We also observed that peak values of streamwise turbulence intensity, turbulent kinetic energy, and streamwise vorticity scale with riblet width. Primary Reynolds shear stresses and turbulence kinetic energy production however scale with the ability of the riblet to reduce skin-friction.  相似文献

The goal of this study is to present a first step towards establishing criteria aimed at assessing whether a particular adverse-pressure-gradient (APG) turbulent boundary layer (TBL) can be considered well-behaved, i.e., whether it is independent of the inflow conditions and is exempt of numerical or experimental artifacts. To this end, we analyzed several high-quality datasets, including in-house numerical databases of APG TBLs developing over flat-plates and the suction side of a wing section, and five studies available in the literature. Due to the impact of the flow history on the particular state of the boundary layer, we developed three criteria of convergence to well-behaved conditions, to be used depending on the particular case under study. (i) In the first criterion, we develop empirical correlations defining the R e ?? -evolution of the skin-friction coefficient and the shape factor in APG TBLs with constant values of the Clauser pressure-gradient parameter β = 1 and 2 (note that β = δ ?/τ w dP e /dx, where δ ? is the displacement thickness, τ w the wall-shear stress and dP e /dx the streamwise pressure gradient). (ii) In the second one, we propose a predictive method to obtain the skin-friction curve corresponding to an APG TBL subjected to any streamwise evolution of β, based only on data from zero-pressure-gradient TBLs. (iii) The third method relies on the diagnostic-plot concept modified with the shape factor, which scales APG TBLs subjected to a wide range of pressure-gradient conditions. These three criteria allow to ensure the correct flow development of a particular TBL, and thus to separate history and pressure-gradient effects in the analysis.  相似文献

This paper presents an experimental investigation of adverse pressure gradient turbulent flow over two rough surfaces and a reference smooth surface. The adverse pressure gradient was produced in an asymmetric diffuser whose opening angle was 3°. The rough surfaces comprised sand grains and gravels of nominal mean diameters of 1.55 mm and 4.22 mm, respectively. The tests were conducted at an approach flow velocity of 0.5 m/s and the momentum thickness Reynolds number varied from 900 to 3000. A particle image velocimetry technique was used for the velocity measurements. Profiles of the mean velocity, turbulent intensities, Reynolds stress ratios, mixing length, eddy viscosity and the production terms were then obtained to document the effects of adverse pressure gradient (APG) on low Reynolds number rough-wall turbulent boundary layers. The results indicate that APG thickens the boundary layer and roughness sublayer. The APG and surface roughness also enhanced the production of turbulence as well as the turbulence level when compared with the smooth-wall data.  相似文献

Experimental measurements address the effects on a turbulent boundary layer of wall roughness on a flat plate and a ramp that produces a separation bubble over the ramp trailing edge. A fully rough flow condition is achieved on the upstream flat plate. The main effect of the wall roughness on the outer layer turbulence on a flat plate is to change the friction velocity. The separation region is substantially larger for the rough-wall case. The rough-wall boundary layer turbulence is less sensitive to the onset of an adverse pressure gradient over the ramp, producing substantially smaller Reynolds stress peaks in upstream flat-plate, wall-unit coordinates.  相似文献

A parametric study of adverse pressure gradient turbulent boundary layers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
There are many open questions regarding the behaviour of turbulent boundary layers subjected to pressure gradients and this is confounded by the large parameter space that may affect these flows. While there have been many valuable investigations conducted within this parameter space, there are still insufficient data to attempt to reduce this parameter space. Here, we consider a parametric study of adverse pressure gradient turbulent boundary layers where we restrict our attention to the pressure gradient parameter, β, the Reynolds number and the acceleration parameter, K. The statistics analyzed are limited to the streamwise fluctuating velocity. The data show that the mean velocity profile in strong pressure gradient boundary layers does not conform to the classical logarithmic law. Moreover, there appears to be no measurable logarithmic region in these cases. It is also found that the large-scale motions scaling with outer variables are energised by the pressure gradient. These increasingly strong large-scale motions are found to be the dominant contributor to the increase in turbulence intensity (scaled with friction velocity) with increasing pressure gradient across the boundary layer.  相似文献

In this paper the effects of hydrophobic wall on skin-friction drag in the channel flow are investigated through large eddy simulation on the basis of weaklycompressible flow equations with the MacCormack's scheme on collocated mesh in the FVM framework. The slip length model is adopted to describe the behavior of the slip velocities in the streamwise and spanwise directions at the interface between the hydrophobic wall and turbulent channel flow. Simulation results are presented by analyzing flow behaviors over hydrophobic wall with the Smagorinky subgrid-scale model and a dynamic model on computational meshes of different resolutions. Comparison and analysis are made on the distributions of timeaveraged velocity, velocity fluctuations, Reynolds stress as well as the skin-friction drag. Excellent agreement between the present study and previous results demonstrates the accuracy of the simple classical second-order scheme in representing turbulent vertox near hydrophobic wall. In addition, the relation of drag reduction efficiency versus time-averaged slip velocity is established. It is also foundthat the decrease of velocity gradient in the close wall region is responsible for the drag reduction. Considering its advantages of high calculation precision and efficiency, the present method has good prospect in its application to practical projects.  相似文献

A high Reynolds number flat plate turbulent boundary layer was studied in a wind-tunnel experiment using particle image velocimetry (PIV). The flow is subjected to an adverse pressure gradient (APG) which is designed such that the boundary layer separates and reattaches, forming a weak separation bubble. With PIV we are able to get a more complete picture of this complex flow phenomenon. The view of a separation bubble being composed of large scale coherent regions of instantaneous backflow occurring randomly in a three-dimensional manner in space and time is verified by the present PIV measurements. The PIV database was used to test the applicability of various velocity scalings around the separation bubble. We found that the mean velocity profiles in the outer part of the boundary layer, and to some extent also the Reynolds shear-stress, are self-similar when using a velocity scale based on the local pressure gradient. The same can be said for the so called Perry–Schofield scaling, which suggests that the two velocity scales are connected. This can also be interpreted as an experimental evidence of the claimed relation between the latter velocity scale and the maximum Reynolds shear-stress.  相似文献

In this paper, direct numerical simulation is performed to investigate a pulsatile flow in a constricted channel to gain physical insights into laminar–turbulent–laminar flow transitions. An in-house computer code is used to conduct numerical simulations based on available high-performance shared memory parallel computing facilities. The Womersley number tested is fixed to 10.5 and the Reynolds number varies from 500 to 2000. The influences of the degree of stenosis and pulsatile conditions on flow transitions and structures are investigated. In the region upstream of the stenosis, the flow pattern is primarily laminar. Immediately after the stenosis, the flow recirculates under an adverse streamwise pressure gradient, and the flow pattern transitions from laminar to turbulent. In the region far downstream of the stenosis, the flow becomes re-laminarised. The physical characteristics of the flow field have been thoroughly analysed in terms of the mean streamwise velocity, turbulence kinetic energy, viscous wall shear stresses, wall pressure and turbulence kinetic energy spectra.  相似文献

The forced transition of the boundary layer on an axisymmetric flared cone in Mach 6 flow is simulated by the method of spatial direct numerical simulation (DNS). The full effects of the flared afterbody are incorporated into the governing equations and boundary conditions; these effects include nonzero streamwise surface curvature, adverse streamwise pressure gradient, and decreasing boundary-layer edge Mach number. Transition is precipitated by periodic forcing at the computational inflow boundary with perturbations derived from parabolized stability equation (PSE) methodology and based, in part, on frequency spectra available from physical experiments. Significant qualitative differences are shown to exist between the present results and those obtained previously for a cone without afterbody flare. In both cases, the primary instability is of second-mode type; however, frequencies are much higher for the flared cone because of the decrease in boundary-layer thickness in the flared region. Moreover, Goertler modes, which are linearly stable for the straight cone, are unstable in regions of concave body flare. Reynolds stresses, which peak near the critical layer for the straight cone, exhibit peaks close to the wall for the flared cone. The cumulative effect appears to be that transition onset is shifted upstream for the flared cone. However, the length of the transition zone may possibly be greater because of the seemingly more gradual nature of the transition process on the flared cone. The experimental data on the effect of weak and moderate non-equilibrium adverse pressure gradients (APG) on the parameters of dynamic and thermal boundary layers are presented. The Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness at the beginning of the APG region was Re** = 5500. The APG region was a slot channel with upper wall expansion angles from 0 to 14°. The profiles of the mean and fluctuation velocity components were measured using a single-component hot-wire anemometer. The friction coefficients were determined using two methods, namely, the indirect Clauser method and the direct method of weighting the lower wall region on a single-component strain-gage balance. The heat transfer coefficients were determined by a transient method using an IR camera. It is noticed that in the pressure gradient range realized the universal logarithmic region in the boundary layer profile is conserved. The values of the relative (divided by the parameters in zero gradient flow at the same value of Re**) friction and heat transfer coefficients, together with the Reynolds analogy factor, are determined as functions of the longitudinal pressure gradient. The values of the relative friction coefficient reduced to cf/cf0 = 0.7 and those of the heat transfer to St/St0 = 0.9. A maximum value of the Reynolds analogy factor (St/St0)/(cf/cf0) = 1.16 was reached for the pressure gradient parameter β = 2.9.  相似文献

Modified variants of differential turbulence models which make it possible continuously to calculate both the entire flow region with laminar, transition and turbulent regimes and local low Reynolds number zones are proposed for investigating the flow and heat transfer in the boundary layers developing in compressible gas flow past curvilinear airfoils. The effect of the intensity and scale of free-stream turbulence and their variability along the outer boundary layer edge, as well as the combined action of the turbulence intensity and the streamwise pressure gradient in flow past blade profiles, on the heat transfer and near-wall turbulence characteristics is analyzed. The numerical results are compared with experimental and theoretical data.  相似文献

The process of laminar to turbulent transition induced by a von Karman vortex street wake, was studied for the case of a flat plate boundary layer. The boundary layer developed under zero pressure gradient conditions. The vortex street was generated by a cylinder positioned in the free stream. An X-type hot-wire probe located in the boundary layer, measured the streamwise and normal to the wall velocity components. The measurements covered two areas; the region of transition onset and development and the region where the wake and the boundary layer merged producing a turbulent flow. The evolution of Reynolds stresses and rms-values of velocity fluctuations along the transition region are presented and discussed. From the profiles of the Reynolds stress and the mean velocity profile, a ‘negative' energy production region along the transition region, was identified. A quadrant splitting analysis was applied to the instantaneous Reynolds stress signals. The contributions of the elementary coherent structures to the total Reynolds stress were evaluated, for several x-positions of the near wall region. Distinct regions in the streamwise and normal to the wall directions were identified during the transition.  相似文献
