We will propose a branch and bound algorithm for calculating a globally optimal solution of a portfolio construction/rebalancing problem under concave transaction costs and minimal transaction unit constraints. We will employ the absolute deviation of the rate of return of the portfolio as the measure of risk and solve linear programming subproblems by introducing (piecewise) linear underestimating function for concave transaction cost functions. It will be shown by a series of numerical experiments that the algorithm can solve the problem of practical size in an efficient manner. The concepts of L-convex function and M-convex function have recently been introduced by Murota as generalizations of submodular function and base polyhedron, respectively, and discrete separation theorems are established for L-convex/concave functions and for M-convex/concave functions as generalizations of Frank’s discrete separation theorem for submodular/supermodular set functions and Edmonds’ matroid intersection theorem. This paper shows the equivalence between Murota’s L-convex functions and Favati and Tardella’s submodular integrally convex functions, and also gives alternative proofs of the separation theorems that provide a geometric insight by relating them to the ordinary separation theorem in convex analysis. In this paper we investigate two approaches to minimizing a quadratic form subject to the intersection of finitely many ellipsoids. The first approach is the d.c. (difference of convex functions) optimization algorithm (abbr. DCA) whose main tools are the proximal point algorithm and/or the projection subgradient method in convex minimization. The second is a branch-and-bound scheme using Lagrangian duality for bounding and ellipsoidal bisection in branching. The DCA was first introduced by Pham Dinh in 1986 for a general d.c. program and later developed by our various work is a local method but, from a good starting point, it provides often a global solution. This motivates us to combine the DCA and our branch and bound algorithm in order to obtain a good initial point for the DCA and to prove the globality of the DCA. In both approaches we attempt to use the ellipsoidal constrained quadratic programs as the main subproblems. The idea is based upon the fact that these programs can be efficiently solved by some available (polynomial and nonpolynomial time) algorithms, among them the DCA with restarting procedure recently proposed by Pham Dinh and Le Thi has been shown to be the most robust and fast for large-scale problems. Several numerical experiments with dimension up to 200 are given which show the effectiveness and the robustness of the DCA and the combined DCA-branch-and-bound algorithm. We consider a quadratic d. c. optimization problem on a convex set. The objective function is represented as the difference of two convex functions. By reducing the problem to the equivalent concave programming problem we prove a sufficient optimality condition in the form of an inequality for the directional derivative of the objective function at admissible points of the corresponding level surface.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with classical concave cost multi-echelon production/inventory control problems studied by W. Zangwill and others. It is well known that the problem with m production steps and n time periods can be solved by a dynamic programming algorithm in O(n 4 m) steps, which is considered as the fastest algorithm for solving this class of problems. In this paper, we will show that an alternative 0–1 integer programming approach can solve the same problem much faster particularly when n is large and the number of 0–1 integer variables is relatively few. This class of problems include, among others problem with set-up cost function and piecewise linear cost function with fewer linear pieces. The new approach can solve problems with mixed concave/convex cost functions, which cannot be solved by dynamic programming algorithms.  相似文献

In this paper, a transportation problem comprising stochastic demands, fixed handling costs at the origins, and fixed costs associated with the links is addressed. It is assumed that uncertainty is adequately captured via a finite set of scenarios. The problem is formulated as a two-stage stochastic program. The goal is to minimize the total cost associated with the selected links plus the expected transportation and fixed handling costs. A prototype problem is initially presented which is then progressively extended to accommodate capacities at the origins and multiple commodities. The results of an extensive set of computational tests are reported and discussed.  相似文献

The treasurer of a bank is responsible for the cash management of several banking activities. In this work, we focus on two of them: cash management in automatic teller machines (ATMs), and in the compensation of credit card transactions. In both cases a decision must be taken according to a future customers demand, which is uncertain. From historical data we can obtain a discrete probability distribution of this demand, which allows the application of stochastic programming techniques. We present stochastic programming models for each problem. Two short-term and one mid-term models are presented for ATMs. The short-term model with fixed costs results in an integer problem which is solved by a fast (i.e. linear running time) algorithm. The short-term model with fixed and staircase costs is solved through its MILP equivalent deterministic formulation. The mid-term model with fixed and staircase costs gives rise to a multi-stage stochastic problem, which is also solved by its MILP deterministic equivalent. The model for compensation of credit card transactions results in a closed form solution. The optimal solutions of those models are the best decisions to be taken by the bank, and provide the basis for a decision support system.  相似文献

This paper addresses itself to a portfolio optimization problem under nonconvex transaction costs and minimal transaction unit constraints. Associated with portfolio construction is a fee for purchasing assets. Unit transaction fee is larger when the amount of transaction is smaller. Hence the transaction cost is usually a concave function up to certain point. When the amount of transaction increases, the unit price of assets increases due to illiquidity/market impact effects. Hence the transaction cost becomes convex beyond certain bound. Therefore, the net expected return becomes a general d.c. function (difference of two convex functions). We will propose a branch-and-bound algorithm for the resulting d.c. maximization problem subject to a constraint on the level of risk measured in terms of the absolute deviation of the rate of return of a portfolio. Also, we will show that the minimal transaction unit constraints can be incorporated without excessively increasing the amount of computation.  相似文献

Previous research has analyzed deterministic and stochastic models of lateral transhipments between different retailers in a supply chain. In these models the analysis assumes given fixed transhipment costs and determines under which situations (magnitudes of excess supply and demand at various retailers) the transhipment is profitable. However, in reality, these depend on aspects like the distance between retailers or the transportation mode chosen. In many situations, combining the transhipments may save transportation costs. For instance, one or more vehicle routes may be used to redistribute the inventory of the potential pickup and delivery stations. This can be done in any sequence as long as the vehicle capacity is not violated and there is enough load on the vehicle to satisfy demand. The corresponding problem is an extension of the one-commodity pickup and delivery traveling salesman and the pickup and delivery vehicle routing problem. When ignoring the routing aspect and assuming given fixed costs, transhipment is only profitable if the quantities are higher than a certain threshold. In contrast to that, the selection of visited retailers is dependent on the transportation costs of the tour and therefore the selected retailers are interrelated. Hence the problem also has aspects of a (team) orienteering problem. The main contribution is the discussion of the tour planning aspects for lateral transhipments which may be valuable for in-house planning but also for price negotiations with external contractors. A mixed integer linear program for the single route and single commodity version is presented and an improved LNS framework to heuristically solve the problem is introduced. Furthermore, the effect of very small load capacity on the structure of optimal solutions is discussed.  相似文献

This paper introduces and analyses a new algorithm for minimizing a convex function subject to a finite number of convex inequality constraints. It is assumed that the Lagrangian of the problem is strongly convex. The algorithm combines interior point methods for dealing with the inequality constraints and quasi-Newton techniques for accelerating the convergence. Feasibility of the iterates is progressively enforced thanks to shift variables and an exact penalty approach. Global and q-superlinear convergence is obtained for a fixed penalty parameter; global convergence to the analytic center of the optimal set is ensured when the barrier parameter tends to zero, provided strict complementarity holds. D.c. functions are functions that can be expressed as the sum of a concave function and a convex function (or as the difference of two convex functions). In this paper, we extend the class of univariate functions that can be represented as d.c. functions. This expanded class is very broad including a large number of nonlinear and/or nonsmooth univariate functions. In addition, the procedure specifies explicitly the functional and numerical forms of the concave and convex functions that comprise the d.c. representation of the univariate functions. The procedure is illustrated using two numerical examples. Extensions of the conversion procedure for discontinuous univariate functions is also discussed.  相似文献

A spatial price equilibrium problem is modeled which allows piecewise linear convex flow costs, and a capacity limit on the trade flow between each supply/demand pair of regions. Alternatively, the model determines the locations of intermediate distribution centers in a market economy composed of separate regions, each with approximately linear supply and demand functions. Equilibrium prices, regional supply and demand quantities, and commodity flows are determined endogenously. The model has a quadratic programming formulation which is then reduced by exploiting the structure. The reduced model is particularly well suited to solution using successive over-relaxation.  相似文献

Within a communications or transportation network, in which a number of locations exchange material or information, hubs can be used as intermediate switching points. In this way, traffic can be consolidated on inter-hub links and, thus, achieve economies of scale in transport costs. Recently, O'Kelly and Brian in 1998 proposed a model (termed the FLOWLOC model) that treats these economies of scale by means of piecewise-linear concave cost functions on the interhub arcs. We show that, for a fixed set of hubs, the FLOWLOC model can be solved using the classic Uncapacitated Facility Location Problem (UFLP). This observation then motivates an optimal enumeration procedure for the FLOWLOC model, as well as some search heuristics that are based upon tabu search and greedy random adaptive search procedures (GRASP). These search procedures would be especially applicable for large-sized problems. Some computational experience is described.  相似文献

We propose a branch-and-price algorithm for solving a class of stochastic transportation problems with single-sourcing constraints. Our approach allows for general demand distributions, nonlinear cost structures, and capacity expansion opportunities. The pricing problem is a knapsack problem with variable item sizes and concave costs that is interesting in its own right. We perform an extensive set of computational experiments illustrating the efficacy of our approach. In addition, we study the cost of the single-sourcing constraints.  相似文献

Transportation of a product from multi-source to multi-destination with minimal total transportation cost plays an important role in logistics and supply chain management. Researchers have given considerable attention in minimizing this cost with fixed supply and demand quantities. However, these quantities may vary within a certain range in a period due to the variation of the global economy. So, the concerned parties might be more interested in finding the lower and the upper bounds of the minimal total costs with varying supplies and demands within their respective ranges for proper decision making. This type of transportation problem has received attention of only one researcher, who formulated the problem and solved it by LINGO. We demonstrate that this method fails to obtain the correct upper bound solution always. Then we extend this model to include the inventory costs during transportation and at destinations, as they are interrelated factors. The number of choices of supplies and demands within their respective ranges increases enormously as the number of suppliers and buyers increases. In such a situation, although the lower bound solution can be obtained methodologically, determination of the upper bound solution becomes an NP hard problem. Here we carry out theoretical analyses on developing the lower and the upper bound heuristic solution techniques to the extended model. A comparative study on solutions of small size numerical problems shows promising performance of the current upper bound technique. Another comparative study on results of numerical problems demonstrates the effect of inclusion of the inventory costs.  相似文献

In this note, we show how a recent approach for solving linearly constrained multivariate Lipschitz optimization problems and corresponding systems of inequalities can be generalized to solve optimization problems where the objective function is only assumed to possess a concave minorant at each point. This class of functions includes not only Lipschitz functions and some generalizations, such as certain -convex functions and Hölder functions with exponent greater than one, but also all functions which can be expressed as differences of two convex functions (d.c. functions). Thus, in particular, a new approach is obtained for the important problem of minimizing a d.c. function over a polytope.  相似文献
