Minimal index of a -crossed product by a finite group

Let be the -crossed product of a simple unital -algebra by a finite group . In this paper we show that the canonical conditional expectation from to has the minimal index if is simple. It is also proved that if is an outer action, then the canonical one is the unique conditional expectation of index-finite type from to , while there are infinitely many conditional expectations when a nontrivial subgroup of acts innerly on .

     

Minimal sufficiency of order statistics in convex models

Let be a convex and dominated statistical model on the measurable space , with minimal sufficient, and let . Then , the -algebra of all permutation invariant sets belonging to the -fold product -algebra , is shown to be minimal sufficient for the corresponding model for independent observations, .

A short proof of ergodicity of Babillot-Ledrappier measures

Babillot and Ledrappier exhibited a family of measures on , which are invariant and ergodic with respect to the strong stable foliation of . We provide a new short proof of ergodicity.

     

On the commutant of operators of multiplication by univalent functions

Linear discrete operators on the disk algebra

Let be the disk algebra. In this paper we address the following question: Under what conditions on the points do there exist operators such that

and , , for every ? Here the convergence is understood in the sense of norm in . Our first result shows that if satisfy Carleson condition, then there exists a function such that , . This is a non-trivial generalization of results of Somorjai (1980) and Partington (1997). It also provides a partial converse to a result of Totik (1984). The second result of this paper shows that if are required to be projections, then for any choice of the operators do not converge to the identity operator. This theorem generalizes the famous theorem of Faber and implies that the disk algebra does not have an interpolating basis.

     

Spaces of type and the Hankel convolution

In this paper we introduce new function spaces that are denoted by , -1/2$"> and and that are spaces of type where the Hankel convolution and the Hankel transformation are defined. The spaces will play the same role in the Hankel setting that the spaces play in the theory of Fourier transformation.

An order characterization of commutativity for -algebras

In this paper, we investigate the problem of when a -algebra is commutative through operator-monotonic increasing functions. The principal result is that the function is operator-monotonic increasing on a -algebra if and only if is commutative. Therefore, -algebra is commutative if and only if in for all positive elements in .

     

Composition operators on Dirichlet-type spaces

The Dirichlet-type space ) is the Banach space of functions analytic in the unit disc with derivatives belonging to the Bergman space . Let be an analytic self-map of the disc and define for . The operator is bounded (respectively, compact) if and only if a related measure is Carleson (respectively, compact Carleson). If is bounded (or compact) on , then the same behavior holds on ) and on the weighted Dirichlet space . Compactness on implies that is compact on the Hardy spaces and the angular derivative exists nowhere on the unit circle. Conditions are given which, together with the angular derivative condition, imply compactness on the space . Inner functions which induce bounded composition operators on are discussed briefly.

     

A two-dimensional Hahn-Banach theorem

Let , where and is a Banach space. Let be an extension of to all of (i.e., ) such that has minimal (operator) norm. In this paper we show in particular that, in the case and the field is R, there exists a rank- such that for all if and only if the unit ball of is either not smooth or not strictly convex. In this case we show, furthermore, that, for some , there exists a choice of basis such that ; i.e., each is a Hahn-Banach extension of .

     

Serial subalgebras of finitary Lie algebras

A Lie subalgebra of is said to be finitary if it consists of elements of finite rank. We show that, if acts irreducibly on , and if is infinite-dimensional, then every non-trivial ascendant Lie subalgebra of acts irreducibly on too. When , it follows that the locally solvable radical of such is trivial. In general, locally solvable finitary Lie algebras over fields of characteristic are hyperabelian.

     

Push-forward of degeneracy classes and ampleness

A note on Gabor orthonormal bases

The study of Gabor bases of the form for has interested many mathematicians in recent years. Alex Losevich and Steen Pedersen in 1998, Jeffery C. Lagarias, James A. Reeds and Yang Wang in 2000 independently proved that, for any fixed positive integer , is an orthonormal basis for if and only if is a tiling of . Palle E. T. Jorgensen and Steen Pedersen in 1999 gave an explicit characterization of such for , , . Inspired by their work, this paper addresses Gabor orthonormal bases of the form for and some other related problems, where is as above. For a fixed , the generating function of a Gabor orthonormal basis for corresponding to the above is characterized explicitly provided that , which is new even if ; a Shannon type sampling theorem about such is derived when , ; for an arbitrary positive integer , an explicit expression of the with being an orthonormal basis for is obtained under the condition that .

     

Wigner's theorem in Hilbert -algebras of compact operators

Let be a Hilbert -module over the -algebra of all compact operators on a Hilbert space. It is proved that any function which preserves the absolute value of the -valued inner product is of the form , where is a phase function and is an -linear isometry. The result generalizes Molnár's extension of Wigner's classical unitary-antiunitary theorem.

     

A splitting theorem for degrees

We prove that, for any , and with _{T}A\oplus U$"> and r.e., in , there are pairs and such that ; ; and, for any and from and any set , if and , then . We then deduce that for any degrees , , and such that and are recursive in , , and is into , can be split over avoiding . This shows that the Main Theorem of Cooper (Bull. Amer. Math. Soc. 23 (1990), 151-158) is false.

     

Convergence of cascade algorithms associated with nonhomogeneous refinement equations

This paper is devoted to a study of multivariate nonhomogeneous refinement equations of the form where is the unknown, is a given vector of functions on , is an dilation matrix, and is a finitely supported refinement mask such that each is an (complex) matrix.
