This study, focusing on inverse relations, examines how representative U.S. and Chinese elementary textbooks may provide opportunities to learn fundamental mathematical ideas. Findings from this study indicate that both of the U.S. textbook series (grades K-6) in comparison to the Chinese textbook samples (grades 1–6), presented more instances of inverse relations, while also containing more unique types of problems; yet, the Chinese textbooks provided more opportunities supporting meaningful and explicit learning. In particular, before presenting corresponding practice problems, Chinese textbooks contextualized worked examples of inverse relations in real-world situations to aid in sense making of computational or checking procedures. The Chinese worked examples also differed in representation uses especially through concreteness fading. Finally, the Chinese textbooks spaced learning over time, systematically stressing structural relations including the inverse quantities relationships. These findings shed light on ways to support students’ meaningful and explicit learning of fundamental mathematical ideas in elementary school.  相似文献

Many standard statistical process control techniques involve sophisticated mathematical concepts, which are frequently misunderstood and misused by their users. This means, as this paper argues, that the techniques, and the terminology and concepts underlying them, are inappropriate for their intended uses and users. The paper considers the areas of the statistical background which cause difficulties. It goes on to describe some alternative concepts, techniques and terminology, which are likely to be conceptually simpler and more ‘user-friendly’ (and in some cases more accurate and robust). None of the ideas require users to be familiar with the standard deviation. We also suggest that the approach of reengineering the conceptual background to suit the context of users and uses may be appropriate to other areas of practical statistics and OR. This article proposes a practical computational procedure to solve a class of continuous-time linear fractional programming problems by designing a discretized problem. Using the optimal solutions of proposed discretized problems, we construct a sequence of feasible solutions of continuous-time linear fractional programming problem and show that there exists a subsequence that converges weakly to a desired optimal solution. We also establish an estimate of the error bound. Finally, we provide two numerical examples to demonstrate the usefulness of this practical algorithm.  相似文献

It has been shown how a design of simulation experiments methodology can be used interactively with practical simulation models constructed in a desktop simulation package (SIMUL8). The methodology includes new ideas on how to improve the accuracy of a simulation response. It is implemented as a set of computer program modules that are not specific to a particular simulation model and provide an interface that lets the modeller construct an efficient simulation experiment with only an operational understanding of how the methodology works. The methodology and program modules are illustrated with a practical simulation model, and the results show how they can improve simulation response with negligible increase in computational effort.  相似文献

This paper discusses certain modifications of the ideas concerning the Gromov–Hausdorff distance which have the goal of modeling and tackling the practical problems of object matching and comparison. Objects are viewed as metric measure spaces, and based on ideas from mass transportation, a Gromov–Wasserstein type of distance between objects is defined. This reformulation yields a distance between objects which is more amenable to practical computations but retains all the desirable theoretical underpinnings. The theoretical properties of this new notion of distance are studied, and it is established that it provides a strict metric on the collection of isomorphism classes of metric measure spaces. Furthermore, the topology generated by this metric is studied, and sufficient conditions for the pre-compactness of families of metric measure spaces are identified. A second goal of this paper is to establish links to several other practical methods proposed in the literature for comparing/matching shapes in precise terms. This is done by proving explicit lower bounds for the proposed distance that involve many of the invariants previously reported by researchers. These lower bounds can be computed in polynomial time. The numerical implementations of the ideas are discussed and computational examples are presented.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to develop new linguistic aggregation operators based on the power-average (PA) operator, such as the linguistic power average (LPA) operator, the linguistic weighted PA operator, and the LPOWA operator. We studied some desired properties of the developed operators, such as idempotency and commutativity. Moreover, we developed two approaches to deal with group decision-making problems under linguistic environments. If the weighting vector of the decision makers was known, we developed an approach based on the linguistic weighted PA operator. On the other hand, if the weighting vector of the decision maker was unknown, we developed a different approach based on the LPOWA operator. We also developed new uncertain linguistic operators under uncertain linguistic environments, such as the ULPA operator, the uncertain linguistic weighted PA operator, and the ULPOWA operator. We extended these approaches, which are based on ULWPA and ULPOWA operators, respectively, to solve group decision-making problems under an uncertain linguistic environment. Finally, a practical example is provided to illustrate the multiple-attribute group decision-making process.  相似文献

Many learning environments, computer-based or not, have been developed for either students or teachers alone to engage them in mathematical inquiry. While some headway has been made in both directions, few efforts have concentrated on creating learning environments that bring both teachers and students together in their teaching and learning. In the following paper, we propose game design as such a learning environment for students and teachers to build on and challenge their existing understandings of mathematics, engage in relevant and meaningful learning contexts, and develop connections among their mathematical ideas and their real world contexts. To examine the potential of this approach, we conducted and analyzed two studies: Study I focused on a team of four elementary school students designing games to teach fractions to younger students, Study II focused on teams of pre-service teachers engaged in the same task. We analyzed the various games designed by the different teams to understand how teachers and students conceptualize the task of creating virtual game learning environment for others, in which ways they integrate their understanding of fractions and develop notions about students' thinking in fractions, and how conceptual design tools can provide a common platform to develop meaningful fraction contexts. In our analysis, we found that most teachers and students, when left to their own devices, create instructional games to teach fractions that incorporate little of their knowledge. We found that when we provided teachers and students with conceptual design tools such as game screens and design directives that facilitated an integration of content and game context, the games as well as teachers' and students' thinking increased in their sophistication. In the discussion, we elaborate on how the design activities helped to integrate rarely used informal knowledge of students and teachers, how the conceptual design tools improved the instructional design process, and how students and teachers benefit in their mathematical inquiry from each others' perspectives. There is a great deal of overlap between the set of practices collected under the term “computational thinking” and the mathematical habits of mind that are the focus of much mathematics instruction. Despite this overlap, the links between these two desirable educational outcomes are rarely made explicit, either in classrooms or in the literature. This paper presents Lattice Land, a computational learning environment and accompanying curriculum designed to support the development of mathematical habits of mind and promote computational thinking practices in high-school mathematics classrooms. Lattice Land is a mathematical microworld where learners explore geometrical concepts by manipulating polygons drawn with discrete points on a plane. Using data from an implementation in a low-income, urban public high school, we show how the design of Lattice Land provides an opportunity for learners to use computational thinking practices and develop mathematical habits of mind, including tinkering, experimentation, pattern recognition, and formalizing hypothesis in conventional mathematical notation. We present Lattice Land as a restructuration of geometry, showing how this new and novel representational approach facilitates learners in developing computational thinking and mathematical habits of mind. The paper concludes with a discussion of the interplay between computational thinking and mathematical habits of mind, and how the thoughtful design of computational learning environments can support meaningful learning at the intersection of these disciplines.  相似文献

We study a stochastic programming approach to multicriteria multi-period portfolio optimization problem. We use a Single Index Model to estimate the returns of stocks from a market-representative index and a random walk model to generate scenarios on the possible values of the index return. We consider expected return, Conditional Value at Risk and liquidity as our criteria. With stocks from Istanbul Stock Exchange, we make computational studies for the two and three-criteria cases. We demonstrate the tradeoffs between criteria and show that treating these criteria simultaneously yields meaningful efficient solutions. We provide insights based on our experiments.  相似文献

As the computational power of high‐performance computing systems continues to increase by using a huge number of cores or specialized processing units, high‐performance computing applications are increasingly prone to faults. In this paper, we present a new class of numerical fault tolerance algorithms to cope with node crashes in parallel distributed environments. This new resilient scheme is designed at application level and does not require extra resources, that is, computational unit or computing time, when no fault occurs. In the framework of iterative methods for the solution of sparse linear systems, we present numerical algorithms to extract relevant information from available data after a fault, assuming a separate mechanism ensures the fault detection. After data extraction, a well‐chosen part of missing data is regenerated through interpolation strategies to constitute meaningful inputs to restart the iterative scheme. We have developed these methods, referred to as interpolation–restart techniques, for Krylov subspace linear solvers. After a fault, lost entries of the current iterate computed by the solver are interpolated to define a new initial guess to restart the Krylov method. A well‐suited initial guess is computed by using the entries of the faulty iterate available on surviving nodes. We present two interpolation policies that preserve key numerical properties of well‐known linear solvers, namely, the monotonic decrease of the A‐norm of the error of the conjugate gradient or the residual norm decrease of generalized minimal residual algorithm for solving. The qualitative numerical behavior of the resulting scheme has been validated with sequential simulations, when the number of faults and the amount of data losses are varied. The aim of this paper is to give a survey of recent developments in the area of successive approximations for Markov decision processes and Markov games. We will emphasize two aspects, viz. the conditions under which successive approximations converge in some strong sense and variations of these methods which diminish the amount of computational work to be executed. With respect to the first aspect it will be shown how much unboundedness of the rewards may be allowed without violation of the convergence

With respect to the second aspect we will present four ideas, that can be applied in conjunction, which may diminish the amount of work to be done. These ideas are: 1. the use of the actual convergence of the iterates for the construction of upper and lower bounds (Macqueen bounds), 2. the use of alternative policy improvement procedures (based on stopping times), 3. a better evaluation of the values of actual policies in each iteration step by a value oriented approach, 4. the elimination of suboptimal actions not only permanently, but also temporarily. The general presentation is given for Markov decision processes with a final section devoted to the possibilities of extension to Markov games.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the multiple attribute decision making (MADM) problems with uncertain linguistic information. Motivated by the ideal of Bonferroni mean and geometric Bonferroni mean, we develop two aggregation techniques called the uncertain linguistic Bonferroni mean (ULBM) operator and the uncertain linguistic geometric Bonferroni mean (ULGBM) operator for aggregating the uncertain linguistic information. We study its properties and discuss its special cases. For the situations where the input arguments have different importance, we then define the uncertain linguistic weighted Bonferroni mean (ULWBM) operator and the uncertain linguistic weighted geometric Bonferroni mean (ULWGBM) operator, based on which we develop two procedures for multiple attribute decision making under the uncertain linguistic environments. Finally, a practical example is given to verify the developed approach and to demonstrate its practicality and effectiveness.  相似文献

This paper proposes a family of random variables for uncertainty modeling. The variables of interest have a bounded support set, and prescribed values for the first four moments. We present the feasibility conditions for the existence of any of such variables, and propose a class of variables that conforms to such constraints. This class is called staircase because the density of its members is a piecewise constant function. Convex optimization is used to calculate their distributions according to several optimality criteria, including maximal entropy and maximal log-likelihood. The flexibility and efficiency of staircases enable modeling phenomena having a possibly skewed and/or multimodal response at a low computational cost. Furthermore, we provide a means to account for the uncertainty in the distribution caused by estimating staircases from data. These ideas are illustrated by generating empirical staircase predictor models. We consider the case in which the predictor matches the sample moments exactly (a setting applicable to large datasets), as well as the case in which the predictor accounts for the sampling error in such moments (a setting applicable to sparse datasets). A predictor model for the dynamics of an aeroelastic airfoil subject to flutter instability is used as an example. The resulting predictor not only describes the system's response accurately, but also enables carrying out a risk analysis for safe flight.  相似文献
