Sorption of N2, O2, Ar, CH4, CO2, C2H4, and C2H6 in poly (dimethyl siloxane) liquid and rubber and the dilation of the polymers due to sorption of the gases are studied at 25°C under pressures up to 50 atm. In the liquid, the sorption isotherms for low-solubility and high-solubility gases are described by Henry's law and the Flory–Huggins equation, respectively. Gas sorption in the rubber, which contains a 29 wt % silica filler, follows the dual-mode sorption model, though marked hysteresis is observed in the sorption of O2 and CH4. The dilation isotherms increase linearly or exponentially in both polymers with increasing pressure. Considering that gas molecules adsorbed into micropores of the filler particles do not participate in the dilation, partial molar volumes of the dissolved gases in the rubber are determined from data of sorption and dilation. The values are nearly equal to the partial molar volumes in the liquid (48–60 cm3/mol).  相似文献

Dilation of polysulfone (PSUL) and crystalline poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films accompanying sorption of carbon dioxide is measured by a cathetometer under high pressure up to 50 atm over the temperature range of 35–65°C. Sorptive dilation isotherms of PSUL are concave and convex to the pressure and concentration axes, respectively, and both isotherms exhibit hysteresis. Each dilation isotherm plotted versus pressure and concentration for the CO2-PET system shows an inflection point, i.e., a glass transition point, at which the isotherm changes from a nonlinear curve to a straight line. Dilation isotherms of PET below the glass transition point are similar to those of the CO2-PSUL system, whereas the isotherms above the glass transition point are linear and exhibit no hysteresis. Partial molar volumes of CO2 in these polymers are determined from data of sorptive dilation. On the basis of the extended dual-mode sorption model and the current data, primitive equations for gas-sorptive dilation of glassy polymers are proposed.  相似文献

Sorption of He, H2, N2, O2, Ar, CH4, C2H6, and C2H6 in polybutadiene and the dilation of the polymer due to sorption of the gases are investigated over the pressure range 0-50 atm at 25°C. For CO2 the measurements are made at temperatures ranging from 15 to 80°C. Partial molar volumes of the gases in the polymer are determined. The temperature dependence of partial molar volume is discussed on the basis of the data for CO2. The Flory-Huggins interaction parameters of CO2, C2H4, and C2H6 are also estimated.  相似文献

The solubilities of He, H2, N2, O2, CO2, CH4, C2H6, C3H8, and n‐C4H10 were determined at 35°C and pressures up to 27 atmospheres in a systematic series of phase separated polyether–polyamide segmented block copolymers containing either poly(ethylene oxide) [PEO] or poly(tetramethylene oxide) [PTMEO] as the rubbery polyether phase and nylon 6 [PA6] or nylon 12 [PA12] as the hard polyamide phase. Sorption isotherms are linear for the least soluble gases (He, H2, N2, O2, and CH4), convex to the pressure axis for more soluble penetrants (CO2, C3H8, and n‐C4H10) and slightly concave to the pressure axis for ethane. These polymers exhibit high CO2/N2 and CO2/H2 solubility selectivity. This property appears to derive mainly from high carbon dioxide solubility, which is ascribed to the strong affinity of the polar ether linkages for CO2. As the amount of the polyether phase in the copolymers increases, gas solubility increases. The solubility of all gases is higher in polymers with less polar constituents, PTMEO and PA12, than in polymers with more polar PEO and PA6 units. CO2/N2 and CO2/H2 solubility selectivity, however, are higher in polymers with higher concentrations of polar repeat units. The sorption data are complemented with physical characterization (differential scanning calorimetry, elemental analysis, and wide angle X‐ray diffraction) of the various block copolymers. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Gas sorption properties, permeability coefficients, and diffusion coefficients of a series of norbornene polymers are presented. Introduction of the Si(CH3)3 group into the polynorbornene (PNB) backbone chain results in significant increases in glass transition temperature, permeability, and diffusion coefficient for a number of gases (H2, O2, N2, CO2, CH4, C2H6). The transport properties and sorption isotherms for poly(5-trimethylsilyl norbornene) (PTMSNB) are very similar to those for poly(vinyltrimethyl silane) (PVTMS), which contains the same side-chain group but differs from PTMSNB by the structure of its main chain. For another silicon-containing polymer poly[5-(1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-1,3-disilabutyl) norbornene] (PDSNB) having a bulkier side-chain group, the glass-transition temperature is decreased in comparison with that of PNB, presumably owing to self-plasticization. Both silicon-containing norbornene polymers (PTMSNB and PDSNB) have permeability coefficients for “rapid” gases like H2 or CO2 of about 102 Barrer. The high values of the Langmuir sorption capacity C′H for PTMSNB and PVTMS, as well as the high diffusivity and mobility of spin probes in these polymers, were attributed to a large free volume related to the bulky Si(CH3)3 groups attached directly to the main chain. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Sorption of carbon dioxide, ethylene, and nitrous oxide in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) at 35°C has been characterized for each gas as a pure component and for mixtures of carbon dioxide/ethylene and carbon dioxide/nitrous oxide. Pressures up to 20 atm were examined. Pure-component sorption isotherms are concave to the pressure axis for each of the gases. This behavior is accurately described by the dual-mode sorption model. Using only the purecomponent dual-mode parameters and the generalization of the model for gas mixtures, one can predict the total concentration of gas sorbed in the polymer to within an average deviation of ±2.01% for the CO2/C2H4/PMMA system and ±0.98% for the CO2/N2O/PMMA system. In both systems, for each component of the mixture, sorption levels were lower than corresponding pure-component sorption levels at pressures equal to the partial pressure of the respective components in the mixture. Depression of the sorbed concentration in mixture situations appears to be a general feature of the above systems and can be substantial in some situations. For the CO2/C2H4/PMMA system, use of pure-component sorption data to estimate the total sorbed concentration in the mixture would be in error by as much as 40% if one failed to account for competition phenomena responsible for depression in mixed-gas situations. Mixture pressures as high as 20 atm were studied for both systems and in the CO2/N2O/PMMA system sorbed concentrations reach 33.90 [cm3(STP)/cm3 polymer] without any significant deviation from model predictions.  相似文献

Solubility measurements of several nonpolar gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, H2, N2, CH4, C2H4, C2H6, CF4, SF6, and CO2) in 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol at 25°C and 101.33 kPa partial pressure of gas are reported. Gibbs energy for the solution process at 25°C is evaluated from the experimental values of the solubility of gases expressed as mole fraction. Lennard-Jones 6–12 pair potential parameters for 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol are estimated by using the scaled particle theory (SPT); and experimental solubilities are compared with those calculated from the values of these parameters through the SPT model.  相似文献

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is the most commonly used membrane material for the separation of condensable vapors from lighter gases. In this study, a composite PDMS membrane was prepared and its gas permeation properties were investigated at various upstream pressures. A microporous cellulose acetate (CA) support was initially prepared and characterized. Then, PDMS solution, containing crosslinker and catalyst, was cast over the support. Sorption and permeation of C3H8, CO2, CH4, and H2 in the prepared composite membrane were measured. Using sorption and permeation data of gases, diffusion coefficients were calculated based on solution‐diffusion mechanism. Similar to other rubbery membranes, the prepared PDMS membrane advantageously exhibited less resistance to permeation of heavier gases, such as C3H8, compared to the lighter ones, such as CO2, CH4, and H2. This result was attributed to the very high solubility of larger gas molecules in the hydrocarbon‐based PDMS membrane in spite of their lower diffusion coefficients relative to smaller molecules. Increasing feed pressure increased permeability, solubility, and diffusion coefficients of the heavier gases while decreased those of the lighter ones. At constant temperature (25°C), empirical linear relations were proposed for permeability, solubility, and diffusion coefficients as a function of transmembrane pressure. C3H8/gas solubility, diffusivity, and overall selectivities were found to increase with increasing feed pressure. Ideal selectivity values of 9, 30, and 82 for C3H8 over CO2, CH4, and H2, respectively, at an upstream pressure of 8 atm, confirmed the outstanding separation performance of the prepared membrane. High-pressure sorption (up to 50 atm) for CO2, N2, and Ar in poly(vinyl benzoate) (PVB) was studied at temperatures from 25 to 70°C by a gravimetric method utilizing an electromicrobalance. The results are described by Henry's law above the glass transition temperature Tg for all gases. The dual-mode sorption model, Henry's law plus a Langmuir isotherm, applies to the sorption isotherms of N2 and Ar in the glassy state, and the dual-mode parameters are given. For CO2, a new type of sorption isotherm is observed below Tg. The isotherm is concave to the pressure axis in the low-pressure region and turns into a straight line with increasing CO2 pressure which can be extrapolated back to the coordinate origin. The linear part of the isotherm is characteristic of the rubbery state, while the nonlinear part stems from glassystate behavior. The “glass transition solubility” of CO2, at which PVB film changes from the glassy to the rubbery state, decrease as the temperature increases. The disappearance of microvoids, that is, the decrease of the Langmuir capacity, may be due to a large plasticizing effect of sorbed CO2. The difference between the N2 and Ar isotherms and the CO2 isotherm is discussed from this standpoint.  相似文献

Glassy polymers are often used for gas separations because of their high selectivity. Although the dual-mode permeation model correctly fits their sorption and permeation isotherms, its physical interpretation is disputed, and it does not describe permeation far from steady state, a condition expected when separations involve intermittent renewable energy sources. To develop a more comprehensive permeation model, we combine experiment, molecular dynamics, and multiscale reaction–diffusion modeling to characterize the time-dependent permeation of N2 and CO2 through a glassy poly(dimethyl phenylene oxide) membrane, a model system. Simulations of experimental time-dependent permeation data for both gases in the presteady-state and steady-state regimes show that both single- and dual-mode reaction–diffusion models reproduce the experimental observations, and that sorbed gas concentrations lag the external pressure rise. The results point to environment-sensitive diffusion coefficients as a vital characteristic of transport in glassy polymers.  相似文献

Low pressure sorption and transport data reported by Barrer et al. [1] for various C4 and C5 hydrocarbons in ethyl cellulose are analyzed in terms of current models of sorption and transport in glassy polymers. The popular dual sorption model, which was first qualitatively justified by these investigators, is used to estimate the frozen free volume fraction in the polymer which can accommodate Langmuir sorption. New CO2 sorption data in ethyl cellulose are also presented and shown to be consistent with the dual sorption model and the frozen free volume fraction estimated from the hydrocarbon sorption. p]Transport of the hydrocarbons in ethyl cellulose is adequately described in terms of the partial immobilization model which attributes mobilities to each of the two sorbed species. The ratio of the mobility of the Langmuir species to that of the Henry's law species was found to be considerably less than unity for all of the gases.  相似文献

The transport properties of silicone rubber are reported at 35°C for a series of pure gases (He, N2, CH4, CO2, and C2H4) and gas mixtures (CO2/CH4 and N2/CO2) for pressures up to 60 atm. The effects of pressure and concentration on the permeability of various gases have been analyzed to consider plasticization and hydrostatic compression effects. Over an extended pressure and concentration range, both compression of free volume and eventual plasticization phenomena were observed for the various penetrants. In pure component studies, plasticization effects tended to dominate hydrostatic compression effects for the more condensible penetrants (C2H4 and CO2) while the reverse was true for the low sorbing N2 and He. These issues are discussed in terms of penetrant diffusion coefficients versus pressure to clarify the interplay between the opposing effects for the penetrants of markedly different solubilities. Additional insight into the somewhat complex interplay of the plasticization and hydrostatic compression effects are given by mixed gas permeation results. It was found that the permeability of nitrogen in a 10/90 CO2/N2 and a 50/50 CO2/N2 mixture was increased by the presence of CO2 because the plasticizing nature of CO2 is able to overcome nitrogen's compression effect.  相似文献

Permeabilities and diffusion coefficients of various gases, Ar, N2, O2, CO2, CH4, C2H4, C3H8 and C4H10, were measured for Water-swollen gel cellophane membranes. No dependence of permeabilities on gas pressure below 1 atm was found. It was observed that the permeability coefficients were not related linearly to the coefficients in bulk water. For the two states of water in the membrane, an analytical method is presented to estimate the diffusion coefficients and the solubilities in free water and non-freezing water. It was found that the diffusion coefficients in non-freezing water were lower than those in free water, and the solubilities in non-freezing water were higher than in free water for all gases studied except CO2 and C2H4, which gave reverse results.  相似文献

The apparent solubility (S), concentration-average diffusivity (D), and permeability (P), for C0_2, CH_4 and N_2 through PPO and aryl-brominated PPO at 35℃for pressure ranging from 1 to 26 atm are reported. It is found that P, D, and S of the membranes to all the three gases vary with the extent of bromination. S increases with the increase of the percent of bromine in each case, but D to CO_2 increases remarkably only at higher degree of brominafion, and therefore, P to CO_2 is increased by more than 100% over a wide range ofpressure in the case. The solubility data are well described by the dual mode sorption model. It is found that the gas molecules sorbed by the Langmuir mode are relatively more immobilized and the contribution of the nonequilibrinm character of the polymer to gas permeation increases obviously for CO_2 and is hardly changed for CH_4 with increasing bromine content. These observations are interpreted in terms of changes in specific free volume (SFV)and the cohesive energy density (CED) of the polymers.  相似文献

The gas sorption and transport properties of a series of polycarbonates in which the isopropylidene unit of bisphenol A polycarbonate has been replaced with another molecular group are presented. Two new materials, bisphenol of norbornane polycarbonate (NBPC) and bisphenol Z polycarbonate (PCZ), are compared with several polymers which have been studied previously in this laboratory, including bisphenol A polycarbonate (PC), hexafluorobisphenol A polycarbonate (HFPC), and bisphenol of chloral polycarbonate (BCPC). The effect of molecular structure on chain mobility and chain packing is related to the gas transport properties. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and differential scanning calorimetry are used to judge chain mobility, while x-ray diffraction and free volume calculations give information about chain packing. Permeability measurements were made for He, H2, O2, N2, CH4, and CO2 at 35°C over a range of pressures up to 20 atm. Sorption experiments were also done for N2, CH4, and CO2 under the same conditions. The permeability coefficients of these polymers rank in the order HFPC ? NBPC>PC>BCPC ? PCZ for all of the gases. With the exception of BCPC, this order correlates well with fractional free volume. The low gas permeability of BCPC is attributed to a polarity effect. In general, bulky and relatively immobile substituents, as in HFPC and NBPC, can yield improved separation characteristics. The polar group of BCPC and the flexible cyclohexyl substituent of PCZ result in relatively low gas permeability.  相似文献

The permeability of nine different polyimide membranes to H2, N2, O2, CH4, and CO2 has been determined at 35°C and at applied pressures of up to 9 atm. The dianhydride monomers used for the synthesis of the polymides were PMDA and 6FDA, whereas the diamine monomers were ODA, BDAF, and p-PDA. The selectivities of the 6FDA polymides toward CO2 relative to CH4 are higher than those of the PMDA polyimides at comparable CO2 permeabilities. Both types of polyimides exhibit significantly higher CO2/CH4 selectivities than more common glassy polymers, such as cellulose acetate, polysulfone, and polycarbonate. The selectivities of the PMDA and 6FDA polyimides to O2 relative to N2 are of the same magnitude and generally higher than those of common glassy polymers with similar O2 permeabilities. The polymides are more permeable to N2 than to CH4, whereas the opposite is true for many other glassy polymers. Possible factors responsible for the above behavior, such as segmental mobility, mean interchain distance, and formation of charge transfer complexes, are examined. The relevance of the study to the development of more highly gas-selective and permeable membranes for the separation of gas mixtures is also discussed.  相似文献

A novel 3D metal‐organic framework BSF‐1 based on the closo‐dodecaborate cluster [B12H12]2? was readily prepared at room temperature by supramolecular assembly of CuB12H12 and 1,2‐bis(4‐pyridyl)acetylene. The permanent microporous structure was studied by X‐ray crystallography, powder X‐ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and gas sorption. The experimental and theoretical study of the gas sorption behavior of BSF‐1 for N2, C2H2, C2H4, CO2, C3H8, C2H6, and CH4 indicated excellent separation selectivities for C3H8/CH4, C2H6/CH4, and C2H2/CH4 as well as moderately high separation selectivities for C2H2/C2H4, C2H2/CO2, and CO2/CH4. Moreover, the practical separation performance of C3H8/CH4 and C2H6/CH4 was confirmed by dynamic breakthrough experiments. The good cyclability and high water/thermal stability render it suitable for real industrial applications.  相似文献

A robust porous metal–organic framework (MOF), [Co3(ndc)(HCOO)33‐OH)(H2O)]n ( 1 ) (H2ndc=5‐(4‐pyridyl)‐isophthalic acid), was synthesized with pronounced porosity. MOF 1 contained two different types of nanotubular channels, which exhibited a new topology with the Schlafli symbol of {42.65.83}{42.6}. MOF 1 showed high‐efficiency for the selective sorption of small molecules, including the energy‐correlated gases of H2, CH4, and CO2, and environment‐correlated steams of alcohols, acetone, and pyridine. Gas‐sorption experiments indicated that MOF 1 exhibited not only a high CO2‐uptake (25.1 wt % at 273 K/1 bar) but also the impressive selective sorption of CO2 over N2 and CH4. High H2‐uptake (2.04 wt % at 77 K/1 bar) was also observed. Moreover, systematic studies on the sorption of steams of organic molecules displayed excellent capacity for the sorption of the homologous series of alcohols (C1–C5), acetone, pyridine, as well as water.  相似文献

The gas‐transport properties of poly[2,6‐toluene‐2,2‐bis(3,4‐dicarboxylphenyl)hexafluoropropane diimide] (6FDA‐2,6‐DAT) have been investigated. The sorption behavior of dense 6FDA‐2,6‐DAT membranes is well described by the dual‐mode sorption model and has certain relationships with the critical temperatures of the penetrants. The solubility coefficient decreases with an increase in either the pressure or temperature. The temperature dependence of the diffusivity coefficient increases with an increase in the penetrant size, as the order of the activation energy for the diffusion jump is CH4 > N2 > O2 > CO2. Also, the average diffusion coefficient increases with increasing pressure for all the gases tested. As a combined contribution from sorption and diffusion, permeability decreases with increases in the pressure and the kinetic diameter of the penetrant molecules. Even up to 32.7 atm, no plasticization phenomenon can be observed on flat dense 6FDA‐2,6‐DAT membranes from their permeability–pressure curves. However, just as for other gases, the absolute value of the heat of sorption of CO2 decreases with increasing pressure at a low‐pressure range, but the trend changes when the feed pressure is greater than 10 atm. This implies that CO2‐induced plasticization may occur and reduce the positive enthalpy required to create a site into which a penetrant can be sorbed. Therefore, a better diagnosis of the inherent threshold pressure for the plasticization of a glassy polymer membrane may involve examining the absolute value of the heat of sorption as a function of pressure and identifying the turning point at which the gradient of the absolute value of the heat of sorption against pressure turns from a negative value to a positive one. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Sorption isotherms of CO2 for ten fluorinated polyimides measured at 35°C and up to about 25 atm are analyzed according to the dual-mode sorption model. Sorption properties for these polyimides are compared with those for other glassy Polymers including unfluorinated polyimides. The glassy polymers with higher glass transition temperatures Tg tend to show greater CO2 sorption. Introduction of a ? C (CF3)2? linkage into the repeat unit of the main chain increases the sorption by 20–80%. For glassy polymers, including the fluorinated and unfluorinated polyimides, the Langmuir affinity constant b and Henry's law solubility constant kD are correlated with the content of functional (carbonyl or sulfonyl) groups [FG], and composite parameter reflecting the magnitude of both [FG] and free-space fraction VF, respectively, with some exceptions. The Langmuir capacity constant CH is correlated with Tg, but there are two correlation lines; one for unfluorinated polyimides and a different one for other glassy polymers including fluorinated polyimides. The slope of the former group is smaller probably because of smaller differences in thermal probably because of smaller differences in thermal expansion coefficients in rubbery and glassy states. Most fluorinated polyimides show greater solubility of CO2 than unfluorinated polyimides and other glassy polymers, because of their larger CH and kD. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
