The preparation of five samples of poly(methyl methacrylate) covering a wide range of tacticity and their electron irradiation to produce series of varying molecular weight are described. The glass transition temperature Tg of each polymer was determined by DTA techniques. Plots of Tg and the reciprocal of the molecular weight are well fitted in every case by a straight line. The data are also fitted to the Gibbs-DiMarzio theory and the values of the energy and free-volume parameters obtained are discussed. A method of estimating Tg of pure syndiotactic poly(methyl methacrylate) by extrapolation is presented, the value obtained being 160°C.  相似文献

On increasing the temperature of a polymer, the transition of the polymer from a rubbery elastic state to a fluid state could occur. The transition temperature is termed the fluid temperature of the polymer, T f, which has a direct relationship with the polymer molecular weight. As one of polymer parameters, T f is as important as the glass transition temperature of a polymer, T g. Moreover, special attention to T f should be paid for polymer processing. In research on the transition of a polymer from a rubbery elastic state to a fluid state, the concept of T f would be more reasonable and more effective than the concept of T l,l because it is neglected in the concept of T l,l in that the molecular weight of a polymer may affect the transition of the polymer. In this paper the discussion on the fluid temperature involves the characters of polymers, such as the deformation—temperature curve, the temperature range of the rubbery state and the shear viscosity of polymer melt. From the viewpoint of the cohesional state of polymers, the transition of a polymer from a rubbery elastic state to a fluid state responds to destruction and construction of the cohesional entanglement network in the polymer. The relaxing network of polymer melt would be worthy to be considered as an object of study. __________ Translated from Huaxue Tongbao (Chemistry), 2008,71(3) (in Chinese)  相似文献

Linear polyphenylimide-quinoxalines (PPIQ) can be crosslinked by isothermal heat treatment in an inert atmosphere. To show this, three polyphenylimide-quinoxalines were prepared which differed only in molecular weight and polymer chain endings. Apparent activation energies of thermal crosslinking were then obtained from the rates of change of Tg as a function of time and temperature. The values (60 kcal/mole) were essentially the same as those for the thermal degradation of the same polymer in vacuum. Differences in polymer molecular weight had a distinct effect on the rates of change of Tg but the polymer chain ends seemed to have a lesser effect than previously observed on polyphenylquinoxalines (PPQ). Nevertheless, the rate of change in Tg is greater for PPIQ than for PPQ of a similar molecular weight. This indicates that the imide portion of the polymer chain leads to faster crosslinking under isothermal conditions.  相似文献

Data on the temperature dependence of viscosity obtained on three different polystyrenes with narrow molecular weight distributions are fitted to the Vogel, Fulcher, Tamman, and Hesse (VTFH) equation as well as to two intersecting Arrhenius lines. Both fits are optimized by means of computer programs. The data were chosen to fit the requirements stated by Boyer. The results of the analyses support the earlier conclusions that temperature-dependent viscosity data do not indicate the presence of any liquid-liquid transition TLL above the glass temperature Tg. In addition, evidence is presented which indicates that the viscosity at Tg of high-molecular-weight polystyrenes is proportional to the 3.4 power of the molecular weight. Hence Tg is not an isoviscous temperature.  相似文献

Calcium thiocyanate is appreciably soluble in “Phenoxy” polymer. Solutions of this salt have significantly different physical properties compared to the pure polymer. The glass-transition temperature Tg is increased, and the kinetics of the glass transition are affected. The melt viscosity and its temperature dependence are increased. The viscosity changes are predicted from the changes in Tg and thermal expansion coefficients, in contrast to ionomers, in which clustering or domain formation cause viscosity to increase. Mechanical properties of the glassy polymers are also affected by the presence of dissolved salt. The most striking effect is an increased resistance to stress cracking by polar organic liquids. This may be related to the Tg increase, or to changes in solubility parameter, as indicated by insolubility of the salt solutions in solvents for the pure polymer. Increased water sorption and electrical conductivity are also results of salt incorporation.  相似文献

Compared with linear polymers, more factors may affect the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of a hyperbranched structure, for instance, the contents of end groups, the chemical properties of end groups, branching junctions, and the compactness of a hyperbranched structure. Tg's decrease with increasing content of end‐group free volumes, whereas they increase with increasing polarity of end groups, junction density, or compactness of a hyperbranched structure. However, end‐group free volumes are often a prevailing factor according to the literature. In this work, chain‐end, free‐volume theory was extended for predicting the relations of Tg to conversion (X) and molecular weight (M) in hyperbranched polymers obtained through one‐pot approaches of either polycondensation or self‐condensing vinyl polymerization. The theoretical relations of polymerization degrees to monomer conversions in developing processes of hyperbranched structures reported in the literature were applied in the extended model, and some interesting results were obtained. Tg's of hyperbranched polymers showed a nonlinear relation to reciprocal molecular weight, which differed from the linear relation observed in linear polymers. Tg values decreased with increasing molecular weight in the low‐molecular‐weight range; however, they increased with increasing molecular weight in the high‐molecular‐weight range. Tg values decreased with increasing log M and then turned to a constant value in the high‐molecular‐weight range. The plot of Tg versus 1/M or log M for hyperbranched polymers may exhibit intersecting straight‐line behaviors. The intersection or transition does not result from entanglements that account for such intersections in linear polymers but from a nonlinear feature in hyperbranched polymers according to chain‐end, free‐volume theory. However, the conclusions obtained in this work cannot be extended to dendrimers because after the third generation, the end‐group extents of a dendrimer decrease with molecular weight. Thus, it is very possible for a dendrimer that Tg increases with 1/M before the third generation; however, it decreases with 1/M after the third generation. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Chain‐end free volume theory is extended for studying the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) as a function of conversion in hyperbranched polymers. Tg is found to have a non‐linear inverse relationship to the molecular weight for polymers obtained by self‐condensing vinyl polymerization (SCVP). During the monomer conversion process, Tg decreases with the increase in molecular weight (P) in the low conversion range, then levels off in the high conversion range.  相似文献

The dielectric permittivity and loss of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), molecular weight 40,000, containing 40% (by weight) water have been measured over the temperature range 77–325 K and frequency range 12 Hz to 0.1 MHz. A prominent relaxation due to rotational diffusion of water molecules in a hydrogen-bonded structure occurs at T < Tg (237 K). The half-width of the dipolar relaxation spectra is 2.27 decades and is temperature independent, which is strikingly different from the corresponding features of pure polymers. It is concluded that H-bonded amorphous solid water persists in the glassy polymer matrix and that the H-bonded structure contains the pyrrolidone side groups of the randomly oriented chain. The relaxation peak at T near Tg is masked by a large dc conductivity which, when expressed in terms of electric modulus, has a spectrum of half-width 1.37 instead of 1.14 decades expected for dc conductivity alone. The contribution from dipolar reorientation in the glass-rubber range of the PVP-H2O solution is smaller than that in its sub-Tg relaxation.  相似文献

The intrinsic and thermal characteristics of poly(styrenephosphonate diethyl ester)s (PSP) are described. The properties of the polymer prepared by two synthetic procedures, phosphorylation of monodispersed polystyrene and polymerization of vinylbenzenephosphonate ester, are compared with chloromethylated polystyrene and with each other. Empirical formulas are presented for the relationships between the degree of polymerization, degree of phosphorylation, molecular weight, and intrinsic viscosity (in methanol and toluene). Thermal analysis reveals a sharp drop in Tg with an increase in degree of phosphorylation; Tg of the fully phosphorylated polystyrene is in the range of 9–30°C. The Tg ΔCp values show significant decrease with augmentation in the degree of phosphorylation, yielding a value of 14 cal g?1 for the fully phosphorylated polymer, compared with ~ 29 cal g?1 for the parent polymer. The PSP is shown to have substantial capacity for dissolving heavy metal salts, such as UO2(NO3)2, causing significant elevation in the Tg.  相似文献

The glass transition temperature Tg of propylene glycol (PG) and poly(propylene glycols) (PPGs) of molecular weight up to 4000 has been measured by differential scanning calorimetry, and the activation energy and change in heat capacity ΔCp have been determined in the glass transition range. The activation energy increases with an increase in the molecular weight of the polymer, and ΔCp measured at a fixed heating rate decreases. The increase in Tg with molecular weight is remarkably more rapid for poly(propylene glycols) than for other polymers, and a limiting value of Tg is reached for a chain containing 20 monomer units. These results are discussed in terms of the Fox-Flory and the entropy theories. The calorimetric relaxation times are comparable with the extrapolated dielectric relaxation times. The initial increase of ΔCp from PG to PPG 200 is attributed to the decrease of H-bonding sites from 12 in 3 monomers to 4 on polymerization to PPG 200 and further decrease with increase in molecular weight to an increasingly large amplitude of the β-process at T < Tg.  相似文献

Poly(4‐n‐alkylstyrene)s with six kinds of n‐alkyl groups such as methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, hexyl, and octyl groups covering wide molecular weight range from around 5 k to over 100 k were precisely synthesized by living anionic polymerizations. It was confirmed that all the polymers obtained have narrow molecular weight distribution, that is, Mw/Mn is all less than 1.1, by SEC. Tgs of all the polymers were estimated by DSC measurements and it turned out to be clear that their molecular weight dependence was well described by the Fox–Flory equations. Furthermore, it is evident that Tg monotonically decreases as a number of carbon atoms of n‐alkyl group is increased, though Tg values are all 20 K or more higher than those reported previously for the same polymer series. This is because backbone mobility increases by introducing longer n‐alkyl side groups with high mobility, while Tg difference in between this work and the previous one may due to the experimental conditions and also to the molecular weight range adopted. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Crosslinking of linear poly[2,2′-(1,4-phenylene)-6,6′-bis(3-phenylquinoxaline)] (PPQ) by isothermal heat exposure in the temperature range between 425 and 490°C was investigated by means of torsional braid analysis. The change in glass transition temperature due to isothermal exposure was used as a kinetic parameter. In order to determine the effect of molecular weight and type of polymer chain ends, three PPQ samples were prepared that differed only in molecular weight and polymer chain endgroups. The apparent activation energy of isothermal crosslinking was independent of molecular weight and chain endings. Its value of 60 kcal/mole is the same as that for the thermal degradation of PPQ (determined by isothermal weight loss measurements). The rates of change of Tg at a particular temperature, however, are a function of both molecular weight (at least for these polymers that do not have a sufficiently high molecular weight) and the type of polymer chain ends. It was observed that isothermally crosslinked PPQ gave a higher break point in the TGA curve and also an increased char yield at 800°C than the linear precursor.  相似文献

Dimer acid‐based polyamides were synthesized by condensation polymerization in the absence and presence of monofunctional reactants. Acetic acid, oleic acid and propyl amine were used as monofunctional reactants. The influences of the equivalent percentage (E%) and type of monofunctional reactant on the physical properties of dimer acid‐based polyamides such as glass transition temperature (Tg), melting point (Tm), heat of fusion (ΔH), degree of polymerization (DP), number average molecular weight (Mn), and kinematic viscosity were investigated. The molecular weight and viscosity of dimer acid‐based polyamides decreased with the increase in equivalent percentage of monofunctional reactant. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies showed that acetic acid and propyl amine had higher effect on the thermal properties of polyamides than that of oleic acid. In the case of polyamides prepared in the presence of acetic acid, the values of Tg, Tm, and ΔH of the polyamides increased remarkably with the increase in acetic acid content. On the contrary, propyl amine had a decreasing effect on the values of Tg, Tm, and ΔH of the polyamides. Incorporation of oleic acid into the polymer structure had no significant effect on the values of Tg and Tm of the dimer acid‐based polyamides. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Torsional braid analysis was used to investigate the crosslinking behavior of linear quinoxaline polymers with and without reactive side groups. The kinetic parameter followed was the glass transition temperature during isothermal exposure in an inert atmosphere. With high molecular weight polyamide-quinoxaline copolymers (PPAQ), an initial decrease in Tg was observed during heat exposure which was followed by a subsequent increase in Tg. This was attributed to simultaneous chain scission and crosslinking reactions. Since the effect of random chain scission on the initial change in Tg of the highest molecular weight polymer samples is much stronger than on low molecular weight analogues, a Tg minimum was observed only on the highest molecular weight polymers. Because of the complexity of the reactions occurring one must consider the activation energies obtained from the Arrhenius plots as “apparent” activation energies. No attempt was made to elucidate the mechanisms of these reactions. It has been shown that isothermal heat exposure of high-temperature aromatic polymers in an inert atmosphere leads to crosslinking. In general, however, linear polymers that have reactive side groups such as methyl or carboxyphenyl groups along the polymer chain crosslink more rapidly than the analogs without these groups.  相似文献

The viscosity data available for four anionically polymerized polystyrenes ranging in molecular weight from 1100 to 47,000 for the temperature range Tg to Tg + 100°C have been fitted by computer programs to both the Vogel, Fulcher, Tamman, and Hesse (VFTH) equation and to two optimum intersecting Arrhenius equations. The intersection point has been interpreted as a manifestation of a liquid-liquid transition. The fits to the VFTH equation were in every case found to be far superior. Systematic deviations of the residuals were observed for the best Arrhenius fits which indicate the lack of any validity for such a representation of the data.  相似文献

Commercial polydisperse atactic poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) exhibits a decreased glass transition temperature (Tg) when the film thickness is less than ~60 nm, whereas more model atactic PMMA shows an increased Tg in thin films supported on clean silicon wafers. NMR indicates no difference in tacticity, so the divergent thin film behavior appears related to the relative distribution of molecular mass. Extraction of some low molecular weight PMMA components from the commercial sample results in a significant modification of the thin film Tg compared with the initial PMMA fraction. The extracted sample exhibits initially a slight decrease in Tg as the film thickness is reduced below ~60 nm, but then Tg appears to increase for films thinner than 20 nm. These results illustrate the sensitivity of polymer thin film properties to low‐molecular mass components and could explain some of the contradictory reports on the Tg of polymer thin films that exist in the literature. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The relation between molecular weight, chain rigidity and the length of the high-elasticity plateau is determined from frequency and temperature dependences of the storage modulus for polybutadienes and polystyrenes with M w/M n ? 1.1. Use is made of the concept of equivalence of high-elastic states characterized by equal lengths of high-elastic plateaus for linear polymers. The high-elastic states of the linear polymers studied are equivalent if the polymer chains have equal numbers of dynamic segments and if the reference temperature is T0 = 1.22Tg, where Tg is the glass transition temperature. The viscoelastic properties of the polymers in the high-elastic state are determined unambiguously by Tg and the molecular weight of the dynamic segment. The quantitative relation between thermomechanical characteristics obtained by measuring deformation versus temperature under a constant time regime and dependence of storage modulus versus frequency under isothermal conditions is discussed.  相似文献

We report a study on the interphase evolution in a system composed by three polymeric components with markedly different mobility distributed between two layers. One of the layers is a low‐Tg blend containing a low molecular weight polystyrene (PS) as a plasticizer (low‐M PS) and PS chains with much higher molecular weight (high‐M PS). The counterpart is a high‐Tg layer composed by polyphenylene oxide. The system was annealed at several temperatures between Tg of the polymer layers and the subsequent interphase development probed by optical sectioning with confocal Raman microspectroscopy. The profiles obtained revealed the existence of two diffusion fronts that advance in opposite directions, both showing a similar response with time and temperature. These fronts act as well‐defined boundaries that structure the interphase into three well‐defined regions with almost constant PS volume fraction. We discuss this particular phenomenology proposing a simple diffusion model that describes the main interphase features. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel findings are reported on hydrogels and aqueous solutions of the zwitterionic polymer, poly[1‐(3‐sulfopropyl)‐2‐vinylpyridinium‐betaine]. In aqueous media of high pH: (a) the chemically crosslinked polymer develops a reddish‐brown coloration followed by physical disintegration and dissolution, and (b) the corresponding linear polymer exhibits the same coloration and undergoes a reduction in molecular weight, solution viscosity and Tg. These finding lie in sharp contrast to normal behaviour exhibited in neutral and acidic aqueous media. Although an unequivocal definitive mechanism is not known, a possible explanation consistent with the experimental observations is suggested.  相似文献
