We consider the spin-glass phase of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model in the presence of a magnetic field. The series expansion
of the Parisi function q(x) is computed at high orders in powers of τ = T
c - T and H. We find that none of the Parisi-Toulouse scaling hypotheses on the q(x) behavior strictly holds, although some of them are violated only at high orders. The series is resummed yielding results
in the whole spin-glass phase which are compared with those from a numerical evaluation of the q(x). At the high order considered, the transition turns out to be third order on the Almeida-Thouless line, a result which is
confirmed rigorously computing the expansion of the solution near the line at finite τ. The transition becomes smoother for
infinitesimally small field while it is third order at strictly zero field.

Large spin systems as given by magnetic macromolecules or two-dimensional spin arrays rule out an exact diagonalization of
the Hamiltonian. Nevertheless, it is possible to derive upper and lower bounds of the minimal energies, i.e. the smallest energies for a given total spin S. The energy bounds are derived under additional assumptions on the topology of the coupling between the spins. The upper
bound follows from “n-cyclicity", which roughly means that the graph of interactions can be wrapped round a ring with n vertices. The lower bound improves earlier results and follows from “n-homogeneity", i.e. from the assumption that the set of spins can be decomposed into n subsets where the interactions inside and between spins of different subsets fulfill certain homogeneity conditions. Many
Heisenberg spin systems comply with both concepts such that both bounds are available. By investigating small systems which
can be numerically diagonalized we find that the upper bounds are considerably closer to the true minimal energies than the
lower ones.

The exclusive 2H( 3He, t)2p reaction has been studied at 2 GeV for energy transfers up to 500 MeV and triton angles up to 3.4°. The protons were measured in the large acceptance magnetic detector DIOGENE, in coincidence with the forward tritons detected
in a dedicated magnetic arm. The energy transfer spectra extend well above the pion threshold. However, in the region of Δ
excitation, the yield is less than 10% of the inclusive 2H( 3He, t) cross-section, which indicates the small contribution of the ΔN ↦ NN process. The angular distributions of the two
protons in their center of mass have been analysed as a function of energy transfer and triton angle and a Legendre polynomial
decomposition has been achieved. These data have been compared to a model based on a coupled-channel approach for describing
the NN and NΔ systems.

A new Stern Gerlach interferometer operating with a nozzle beam of metastable argon atoms Ar* (3p5 4s, 3
P
2) is described. The selection of incoming (polarisation) and outgoing (analysis) Zeeman sublevels is achieved by use of laser
induced transitions at two wavelengths, 811.5 nm (closed J = 2 → J = 3 transition) and 801.5 nm (open J = 2 → J = 2 transition). Linear superpositions of Zeeman sublevels, just beyond the polariser and just before the analyser, are prepared
by means of two zones where Majorana transitions take place. In between, a controlled magnetic field configuration (the phase
object) is produced within a triple μ-metal shielding. Standard interference patterns are obtained by scanning the field and
detecting the atoms by secondary electron emission from a Faraday cup. When a static radial magnetic gradient is used, the
beam profile is modulated by interference. The transverse pattern, which can be translated at will by adding a homogeneous
field, is observed for the first time using a multi-channel electron multiplier followed by a phosphor screen and a CCD camera.
The results satisfactorily agree with all theoretical predictions.

High-spin states of the 42Ca nucleus, populated in the 68 MeV 18O + 30Si reaction, have been studied in a γ-γ-recoil coincidence experiment. The level scheme of 42Ca has been extended up to 13.7 MeV. An elaborate decay pattern with various paths, together with high-quality DCO and polarization
information assigns spins and parities for almost all observed levels. The sequence of non-yrast positive-parity states is
discussed and compared with highly deformed bands in 36Ar and 40Ca.

We investigate the mechanical properties of a two-dimensional amorphous solid. It is formed spontaneously by the adsorption
of a protein (the β-lactoglobulin) at the surface of water. We measure its mechanical response in both elastic and plastic
regimes by applying a point-like force (using a glass fiber). We compare our results with previous measurements of shear moduli
using a floating torsion device.

We discuss the applicability of pQCD to the elastic scattering of electrons on protons and deuterons. We analyze the Q2-dependence of the reduced deuteron form factor, taking into account the recent data on the electric proton form factor and
we find that the value of the QCD-scale parameter Λ differs essentially from the value Λ = 0.1 GeV, previously found using
the dipole parametrization of the electromagnetic nucleon form factors GE and GM. Moreover, the predicted scaling behavior of the reduced deuteron form factor cannot be recovered in the Dirac and Pauli
representations for the nucleon electromagnetic form factors.

Based on the newly constructed Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen (EPR) entangled state representation we introduce macroscopic
classical functions associated with atomic coherent state τ with angular momentum value j. These functions are proportional to the ordinary one-variable Hermite polynomials of order 2j. The corresponding Wigner quasiprobability function for τ in phase space is also derived which turns out to be a two-variable Hermite polynomial H
2j, 2j. In so doing, a new classical-quantum correspondence scheme for angular momentum system is established.

The lifetime of the Λ-hyperon in heavy hypernuclei measured in proton-Au, -Bi and -U collisions by the COSY-13 Collaboration
at COSY-Jülich has been analyzed to yield τΛ = (145±11) ps. This value for τΛ is compatible with the lifetime extracted from antiproton annihilation on Bi and U targets, albeit much more accurate. Theoretical
models based on the meson exchange picture and assuming the validity of the phenomenological ΔI = 1/2 rule predict the lifetime of heavy hypernuclei to be significantly larger (2-3 standard deviations). Such large differences
indicate that at least one of the assumptions in these models is not fulfilled. A much better reproduction of the lifetimes
of heavy hypernuclei is achieved in the phase space model, if the ΔI = 1/2 rule is discarded in the nonmesonic Λ decay.

The associative charm particles production in nucleon-nucleon collisions N + N↦Λc(Σc) + ˉD + N, is described in a general way and the spin and isospin structure of the corresponding matrix elements are derived. Using
an analogy with strange-particle (ΛK) production, the D-meson exchange model is considered in detail. Estimations of the energy behavior of the threshold cross-sections show a large
dependence on the form of the phenomenological hadron form factors and indicate that, at threshold, the cross-section is three
orders of magnitude smaller than for strange-particle production.

Using the method which retains the rotation symmetry of spin components in the paramagnetic state and has no preset magnetic
ordering, spectral and magnetic properties of the two-dimensional t-J model in the normal state are investigated for the ranges of hole concentrations 0 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.16 and temperatures 0.01t ⩽ T ⩽ 0.2t. The used hopping t and exchange J parameters of the model correspond to hole-doped cuprates. The obtained solutions are homogeneous which indicates that stripes
and other types of phase separation are not connected with the strong electron correlations described by the model. A series
of nearly equidistant maxima in the hole spectral function calculated for low T and x is connected with hole vibrations in the region of the perturbed short-range antiferromagnetic order. The hole spectrum has
a pseudogap in the vicinity of (0,π) and (π, 0). For x ≈ 0.05 the shape of the hole Fermi surface is transformed from four small ellipses around (±π/2,±π/2) to two large rhombuses
centered at (0, 0) and (π,π). The calculated temperature and concentration dependencies of the spin correlation length and
the magnetic susceptibility are close to those observed in cuprate perovskites. These results offer explanations for the observed
scaling of the static uniform susceptibility and for the changes in the spin-lattice relaxation and spin-echo decay rates
in terms of the temperature and doping variations in the spin excitation spectrum of the model.

We study anomalous J/Ψ suppression and p
t broadening in the model of prompt gluons. The anomalous suppression can be successfully described in this model. The transverse-momentum
dependence of J/Ψ suppression in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is calculated from initial-state gluon rescattering with both nucleons
and prompt gluons produced in nucleon-nucleon collisions in the early phase of the reaction. It seems impossible to describe
simultaneously anomalous suppression and p
t broadening in Pb-Pb collisions within the model of prompt gluons with reasonable values of the parameters.

J/ψ and decays to mesons are a good place to look for glueballs, hybrids and for extracting strange and non-strange components in
mesons. Abundant J/ψ and events have been collected at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC). More data will be collected at upgraded BEPC
and CLEO-C. Here we provide explicit PWA formulae for many interesting channels in the covariant tensor formalism.

The decay out of the πh
11/2νh
11/2 band to the known low-energy levels in 132La was studied using the reaction 100Mo + 36S at 160 MeV beam energy. The low-energy level scheme has been further developed and unambiguous spin and parity values have
been assigned to the levels connecting the band to the 6- isomeric state. According to the new level scheme the spins in the πh
11/2νh
11/2 band are shifted up by one unit compared to the earlier tentative experimental values. The obtained new spins prove the existence
of signature inversion in 132La and give further support to the spin assignments made for the πh
11/2νh
11/2 bands in the neighbouring odd-odd La isotopes from level energy systematics.

An explicit model realizing parton-hadron duality and fitting the data is suggested. Complex nonlinear Regge trajectories
are important ingredients of the model. The inclusion of Δ and N* trajectories should account for all resonances in the direct channel. The exotic trajectory is responsible for the smooth
background.

The 106, 108Rh and 110, 112Ag nuclei have been produced as fission fragments following the fusion reaction 28Si + 176Yb at 145 MeV bombarding energy and studied with the Eurogam2 array. The yrast high-spin states of these four odd-odd nuclei,
which are observed for the first time, consist of rotational bands in which the odd proton occupies the πg
9/2 subshell and the odd neutron the νh
11/2 subshell. Their behaviour as a function of spin values does not vary with the number of neutrons: as observed in the odd-N neighbouring nuclei, the motion of the odd neutron remains decoupled from the motion of the core, from N = 61 to N = 65. Moreover, the staggering observed in the yrast bands of odd-odd isotopes is strongly reduced as compared to the large
values displayed by the rotational bands built on the πg
9/2 subshell in the odd-A Rh and Ag isotopes. The results of particle-rotor calculations indicate that this reduction is related to a change of the
core deformation.

We study the deviations from perfect memory in negative temperature cycle spin glass experiments. It is known that the a.c.
susceptibility after the temperature is raised back to its initial value is superimposed to the reference isothermal curve
for large enough temperature jumps ΔT (perfect memory). For smaller ΔT, the deviation from this perfect memory has a striking non monotonous behavior: the `memory anomaly' is negative for small ΔT's, becomes positive for intermediate ΔT's, before vanishing for still larger ΔT's. We show that this interesting behavior can be reproduced by simple Random Energy trap models. We discuss an alternative
interpretation in terms of droplets and temperature chaos.
