Interactions of a transversely excited atmospheric (TEA) CO2 laser and an excimer XeCl laser, pulse durations ∼2 μs (initial spike FWHM ∼100 ns) and ∼20 ns (FWHM), respectively, with polycrystalline titanium nitride (TiN) coating deposited on high quality steel AISI 316, were studied. Titanium nitride was surface modified by the laser beams, with an energy density of 20.0 J/cm2 (TEA CO2 laser) and 2.4 J/cm2 (XeCl laser), respectively. The energy absorbed from the CO2 laser beam is partially converted to thermal energy, which generates a series of effects such as melting, vaporization of the molten material, shock waves, etc. The energy from the excimer XeCl laser primarily leads to fast and intense target evaporation. The calculated maximum temperatures on the target surface were 3770 and 6300 K for the TEA CO2 and XeCl lasers, respectively. It is assumed that the TEA CO2 laser affects the target deeper, for a longer time than the XeCl laser. The effects of the XeCl laser are confined to a localized area, near target surface, within a short time period.Morphological modifications of the titanium nitride surface can be summarized as follows: (i) both lasers produced ablation of the TiN coating in the central zone of the irradiated area and creation of grainy structure with near homogeneous distribution; (ii) a hydrodynamic feature, like resolidified droplets of the material, appeared in the surrounding peripheral zone; (iii) the process of irradiation, in both cases, was accompanied by appearance of plasma in front of the target.Target color modifications upon laser irradiation indicate possible chemical changes, possibly oxidation.  相似文献

In order to obtain short tail-free output laser pulses from a TEA CO2 laser, parametric study of the laser operation with CO2/H2 and CO2/He binary gas mixtures containing high CO2 concentrations was carried out. A small scale UV preionized short delay time TEA CO2 laser was employed. In terms of the maximum extractable output pulse energy and power, the more conventional CO2/He gas mixture was found to be inferior in comparison with the CO2/H2 mixture proposed here.  相似文献

Pulsed laser assisted removal of uranium dioxide and thorium dioxide particulates from stainless steel surface have been studied using a TEA CO2 laser. Decontamination efficiency is measured as a function of laser fluence and number of pulses. Threshold fluence for the removal of UO2 particulates has been found to be lower than that required for the removal ThO2 particulates. Usage of a ZnSe substrate, that is transparent to the laser wavelength used here, enabled us to decouple the cleaning effect arising out of absorption in the particulates from that in the substrate and has contributed towards understanding the mechanism responsible for cleaning. The experimental observations are also corroborated by simple theoretical calculations.  相似文献

The interaction of a transversely excited atmospheric (TEA) CO2 laser with chromium oxynitride (CrON) coating deposited on a AISI 304 steel substrate was considered. The results have shown that CrON was surface-modified by the laser beam of 45 J/cm2 energy density. The energy absorbed from the TEA CO2 laser beam was partially converted into thermal energy, which has generated a series of effects such as melting, vaporization of the molten material, and shock waves in the vapor and in the solid. Morphological manifestations on the CrON coating surface can be summarized as follows: non-uniform features with ablation and appearance of crater-like form (central zone of interaction); appearance of three damaged areas and presence of hydrodynamic effects with resolidified droplets (periphery zone of interaction). In case of applied energy density the interaction of laser radiation with CrON has been always followed by plasma creation in front of the coating. PACS 79.20.Ds; 61.80.Ba  相似文献

Interaction of a nanosecond transversely excited atmospheric (TEA) CO2 laser, operating at 10.6 μm, with tungsten-titanium thin film (190 nm) deposited on silicon of n-type (1 0 0) orientation, was studied. Multi-pulse irradiation was performed in air atmosphere with laser energy densities in the range 24-49 J/cm2. The energy absorbed from the laser beam was mainly converted to thermal energy, which generated a series of effects. The following morphological changes were observed: (i) partial ablation/exfoliation of the WTi thin film, (ii) partial modification of the silicon substrate with formation of polygonal grains, (iii) appearance of hydrodynamic features including nano-globules. Torch-like plumes started appearing in front of the target after several laser pulses.  相似文献

We have studied about the thrust imparted to targets of different materials by pulsed TEA CO2 laser and chopped CW CO2 laser in air and its dependence on different parameters such as laser intensity and pulse duration. We estimated the impulse-coupling coefficient and compared it with the published results. The mechanism of generation of thrust by laser incident on targets in air is, in effect, combination of those involved in laser ablation in vacuum and laser-induced air detonation.  相似文献

Selective laser isotope separation by TEA CO2 laser often needs short tail-free pulses. Using laser mixtures having very little nitrogen almost tail free laser pulses can be generated. The laser pulse characteristics and its gas lifetime is an important issue for long-term laser operation. Boltzmann transport equation is therefore solved numerically for TEA CO2 laser gas mixtures having very little nitrogen to predict electron energy distribution function (EEDF). The distribution function is used to calculate various excitation and dissociation rate of CO2 to predict laser pulse characteristics and laser gas lifetime, respectively.Laser rate equations have been solved with the calculated excitation rates for numerically evaluated discharge current and voltage profiles to calculate laser pulse shape. The calculated laser pulse shape and duration are in good agreement with the measured laser characteristics. The gas lifetime is estimated by integrating the equation governing the dissociation of CO2. An experimental study of gas lifetime was carried out using quadrapole mass analyzer for such mixtures to estimate the O2 being produced due to dissociation of CO2 in the pulse discharge. The theoretically calculated O2 concentration in the laser gas mixture matches with experimentally observed value. In the present TEA CO2 laser system, for stable discharge the O2 concentration should be below 0.2%.  相似文献

The analysis of hydrogen in a metal sample (zircaloy-4), which is usually difficult to perform using conventional laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) techniques, has been achieved using a double-pulse technique under He gas at atmospheric pressure. In this technique, a transversely excited atmospheric-pressure (TEA) CO2 laser (1.5 J, 200 ns) was focused onto the metal surface to induce a strong He gas plasma whilst simultaneously focussing a Nd-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser (120 mJ, 8 ns), synchronized with the TEA CO2 laser, onto the metal to ablate atoms into the resulting He gas plasma. The emission spectrum obtained shows a narrow H linewidth with low background intensity and long lifetime emission, thereby indicating that excitation takes place via metastable He atoms. The H emission from H2O can be suppressed by a careful pretreatment involving heating the sample in a vacuum chamber.  相似文献

A pulsed inductive discharge CO2 laser with a wavelength of 10.6 μm has been created for the first time. The excitation system of a cylindrical pulsed inductive discharge (pulsed inductively coupled plasma) in the gas mixture of CO2:N2:He was developed. The temporal and energy parameters of the laser radiation were investigated. The maximum inductive discharge CO2 laser radiation energy of 104 mJ was achieved. An average power of 3.2 W was obtained at laser generation energy of 65 mJ and pulse repetition rate of 50 Hz. In the cross-section, the laser radiation had the ring shape with an external diameter of 34 mm and thickness of 4-5 mm. The measured divergence of laser radiation was 12 mrad.  相似文献

A miniature tunable TEA CO2 laser using isotope 13C16O2 as the active medium is developed to extend the spectral range of CO2 lasers for further application. The optimization of the energy parameters of the tunable TEA 13C16O2 laser and the same laser using 12C16O2 are studied. When a gas mixture (13C16O2: N2: He = 1: 1: 3) at a total pressure of 6.4 × 104 Pa is used, the TEA 13C16O2 laser of a 45-cm3 active volume obtains 51 emission lines in the [0001–1000] and [0001–0200] bands. The maximum pulse energy of the TEA 13C16O2 laser is about 357 mJ. The same laser using the conventional gas mixture (12C16O2: N2: He = 1: 1: 3) at a pressure of 6.66 × 104 Pa is measured to obtain 69 laser emission lines and the maximum pulse energy of laser radiation is about 409 mJ.  相似文献

Organic polymer (PES: PolyEther Sulphone and PEEK: PolyEther Ether Ketone) ablation with oscillation-line selected TEA CO2 lasers is successfully demonstrated. With different irradiation conditions the ablative etch-rate slopes were varied, which means that the ablation process is dependent on the ablation conditions such as incident laser intensity and ambient gas. In perforation processing of the PEEK film, the TEA CO2 laser had a higher etch rate of 42 m/pulse at a fluence of 70 J/cm2 in vacuum than the XeCl laser.  相似文献

Interaction of an Nd:YAG laser, operating at 1064 or 532 nm wavelength and pulse duration of 40 ps, with titanium implant was studied. Surface damage thresholds were estimated to 0.9 and 0.6 J/cm2 at wavelengths 1064 and 532 nm, respectively. The titanium implant surface modification was studied by the laser beam of energy density of 4.0 and 23.8 J/cm2 (at 1064 nm) and 13.6 J/cm2 (at 532 nm). The energy absorbed from the Nd:YAG laser beam is partially converted to thermal energy, which generates a series of effects, such as melting, vaporization of the molten material, shock waves, etc. The following titanium/implant surface morphological changes were observed: (i) both laser wavelengths cause damage of the titanium in the central zone of the irradiated area, (ii) appearance of a hydrodynamic feature in the form of resolidified droplets of the material in the surrounding outer zone with the 1064 nm laser wavelength and (iii) appearance of wave-like microstructures with the 532 nm wavelength. Generally, both laser wavelengths and the corresponding laser energy densities can efficiently enhance the titanium/implant roughness. This implant roughness is expected to improve its bio-integration. The process of the laser interaction with titanium implant was accompanied by formation of plasma.  相似文献

A microprocessor-based algorithm was developed to control the power supply to a CO2 laser using an AC-chopper method. This system was connected directly to a CO2 laser tube without the need for a dc-dc converter or the storage capacitance of a multilevel circuit. The typical CO2 laser power supply system had a full-bridge series resonant inverter or voltage multiplier. AC-to-AC converter schemes using zero voltage switching (ZVS) can be used efficiently and economically for low and medium power applications. This paper reports the performance characteristics of a symmetrical AC-chopper technology that can maintain the quality of the ac output of a CO2 laser tube, regardless of the amount of switching loss. The laser was operated to an output power, maximum system efficiency total gas mixture of 37.2 W, 92%, and CO2:N2:He=1:9:15, respectively. The laser system, AC-chopper power supply and its operation were examined.  相似文献

A D2O laser has been developed for collective Thomson scattering measurements of ion temperature in high temperature plasmas. A pulse duration and a spectral width of a high power D2O laser has been successfully controlled for this purpose, by using a TEA CO2 laser injection-locked by an etalon-tuned TEA CO2 laser as a pump source.  相似文献

Temporal and spatial analysis of dynamics of hybrid transversely excited atmospheric pressure (TEA)–CO2 lasers is studied using two different models with four and eight energy levels. These models are used for simulation of the laser and computing the output energy. Effects of several parameters such as input energies and gas mixture concentrations (especially presence of CO molecules) are also studied.  相似文献

The effect of laser ablation on copper foil irradiated by a short 30 ns laser pulse was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The laser fluence was varied from 8 to 16.5 J/cm2 and the velocity of the laser beam from 10 to 100 mm/s. This range of laser fluence is characterized by a different intensity of laser ablation. The experiments were done in two kinds of ambient atmosphere: air and argon jet gas.The chemical state and composition of the irradiated copper surface were determined using the modified Auger parameter (α′) and O/Cu intensity ratio. The ablation atmosphere was found to influence the size and chemical state of the copper particles deposited from the vapor plume. During irradiation in air atmosphere the copper nanoparticles react with oxygen and water vapor from the air and are deposited in the form of a CuO and Cu(OH)2 thin film. In argon atmosphere the processed copper surface is oxidized after exposure to air.  相似文献

Satisfactory performance of a TEA CO2 laser of active length 30 cm is reported when self-switched by its own preioniser comprising two mutually coupled parallel spark channels or even one spark channel. A comparison of the performance of the laser with respect to the maximum extractable energy and electro-optic efficiency as a function of number of preionising spark channels is presented. With reduced number of mutually coupled parallel spark channels, the operation approaches the near ballast-free regime, resulting thereby, in an improved performance of the laser.  相似文献

Experimental and theoretical study of VI characteristics of UV pre-ionized TEA CO2 laser has been carried out for a variety of gas mixtures emitting different optical pulse shapes suitable for various applications. Coupled differential equations have been solved to model the pulse excitation circuit using the numerically calculated values of ionization coefficient (α), attachment coefficient (β) and drift velocity (Ud) as functions of E/N (i.e. electric field to neutral particle density ratio) for chosen gas mixture. Calculated and experimental V–I characteristics for gas mixtures (CO2:N2:He::1:2:3, 1:1:4, 1:1:5 and 1:0:4.7) show a good agreement. It has been shown that gas mixture has a dominant effect on the delay between pre-ionization and main discharge; thus, determining the long-term stability of discharge. The excitation pulse duration increases with increase in molecular content of gas mixture (i.e. amount of CO2 and N2 in gas mixture).  相似文献

Polarization spectroscopy in the mid-infrared (IRPS) has been applied to the detection of acetylene molecules making use of the asymmetric C-H stretching vibration at around 3 μm. The infrared laser pulses were produced through difference frequency generation in a LiNbO3 crystal pumped by a Nd:YAG and dye laser system. By directly probing the ro-vibrational transitions with IRPS, sensitive detection of molecules with otherwise inaccessible electronic states was realized with high temporal and spatial resolution by using a pulsed laser and a cross-beam geometry. Detection sensitivities of 2 × 1013 molecules/cm3 (10 ppm in 70 mbar gas mixture) of C2H2 were achieved using the P(1 1) line of the (0 1 0(1 1)0)-(0 0 0 00 00) band. The dependence of the IRPS signal on the pump laser fluence, acetylene mole fraction, and buffer gas pressure of Ar, N2, H2, and CO2 has been studied experimentally. The investigation demonstrates the quantitative nature of IRPS for sensitive detection of polyatomic IR active molecules. In order to fully demonstrate the technique for combustion applications, nascent acetylene molecules were measured in a low pressure methane/oxygen flame.  相似文献
