Host‐Assisted Guest Self‐Assembly: Enhancement of the Dimerization of Pyronines Y and B by γ‐Cyclodextrin

Buckle up! The dimerization of small fluorescent guests is strongly enhanced in presence of a cyclodextrin host. The host cavity acts like a belt to assist the self‐assembly of guests (see picture). Small variations in the guest structure have significant influence on the stability and geometry of the aggregates.

     

An efficient and clean one‐pot synthesis of 3,4‐dihydropyrimidine‐2(1H)‐ones catalyzed by tungstate sulfuric acid in solvent‐free conditions

Tungstate sulfuric acid catalyzes the three component condensation reaction of an aromatic aldehyde, urea and a β‐ketoester under solvent‐free conditions to afford the corresponding dihydropyrimidinones in high to excellent yields at room temperature.     

Polymorphism and Phonon Dynamics of α‐Quaterthiophene

Two 4T: Low‐frequency micro‐Raman spectroscopy coupled with lattice dynamics calculations is an invaluable tool for investigating polymorphism in organic semiconductors. The Raman spectra of the low‐temperature (LT) and high‐temperature (HT) polymorphs of α‐quaterthiophene (4T) are presented and interpreted (see picture). Raman mapping is applied to investigate the phase purity.

     

A Supramolecularly Assisted Transformation of Block‐Copolymer Micelles into Nanotubes

Once around the block : Incorporation of a rigid hydrogen‐bonding benzamide unit, placed at the interface between two polymer blocks, in poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)–(thio)urea–poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) block copolymers transforms the morphology of the block copolymers, from spherical micelles, as formed by PEG‐PLLA diblock copolymers, into nanotubes in solution.

     

Stereoselective Synthesis of 2,6‐Disubstituted Piperidines Using the Iridium‐Catalyzed Allylic Cyclization as Configurational Switch: Asymmetric Total Synthesis of (+)‐241 D and Related Piperidine Alkaloids

Pressing the configurational switch : Use of enantiomeric Ir catalysts allows the vinylpiperidine building blocks 2 a and 2 b to be synthesized with high selectivity. Total syntheses of the dendrobate alkaloid (+)‐241 D, its C6‐epimer, and a spruce alkaloid are presented as applications.

     

Inside Cover: Adsorption,Diffusion, and Self‐Assembly of an Engineered Gold‐Binding Peptide on Au(111) Investigated by Atomic Force Microscopy (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 28/2009)

The binding, diffusion, and aggregation mechanism of an engineered binding peptide on Au(111), showing non‐equilibrium surface structures that lead to the formation of a confluent monolayer, is described by M. Sarikaya et al. in their Communication on page 5174 ff. The observed dynamic structural evolution involving the surface diffusion of peptides and multiple stages of molecular thin film topology are explained. Intermolecular Double Prins‐Type Cyclization: A Facile and Efficient Synthesis of 1,6‐Dioxecanes

Double or nothing : The title reaction converts a range of aromatic aldehydes and allenylmethyl/allyl silanes into 1,6‐dioxecane derivatives in good to excellent yields (see scheme; Ar=aryl, Tf=triflate, THF=tetrahydrofuran, TMS=trimethylsilyl). In addition, the bisdiene product has been transformed into the corresponding tricyclic compound through a Diels–Alder reaction.
