In this paper we consider dependent random variables with common regularly varying marginal distribution. Under the assumption that these random variables are tail-independent, it is well known that the tail of the sum behaves like in the independence case. Under some conditions on the marginal distributions and the dependence structure (including Gaussian copula’s and certain Archimedean copulas) we provide the second-order asymptotic behavior of the tail of the sum.  相似文献

For continuous random variables, many dependence concepts and measures of association can be expressed in terms of the corresponding copula only and are thus independent of the marginal distributions. This interrelationship generally fails as soon as there are discontinuities in the marginal distribution functions. In this paper, we consider an alternative transformation of an arbitrary random variable to a uniformly distributed one. Using this technique, the class of all possible copulas in the general case is investigated. In particular, we show that one of its members—the standard extension copula introduced by Schweizer and Sklar—captures the dependence structures in an analogous way the unique copula does in the continuous case. Furthermore, we consider measures of concordance between arbitrary random variables and obtain generalizations of Kendall's tau and Spearman's rho that correspond to the sample version of these quantities for empirical distributions.  相似文献

This paper establishes a link between a generalized matrix Matsumoto-Yor (MY) property and the Wishart distribution. This link highlights certain conditional independence properties within blocks of the Wishart and leads to a new characterization of the Wishart distribution similar to the one recently obtained by Geiger and Heckerman but involving independences for only three pairs of block partitionings of the random matrix. In the process, we obtain two other main results. The first one is an extension of the MY independence property to random matrices of different dimensions. The second result is its converse. It extends previous characterizations of the matrix generalized inverse Gaussian and Wishart seen as a couple of distributions. We present two proofs for the generalized MY property. The first proof relies on a new version of Herz's identity for Bessel functions of matrix arguments. The second proof uses a representation of the MY property through the structure of the Wishart.  相似文献

In this paper we show how, based on a decomposition of the likelihood ratio test for sphericity into two independent tests and a suitably developed decomposition of the characteristic function of the logarithm of the likelihood ratio test statistic to test independence in a set of variates, we may obtain extremely well-fitting near-exact distributions for both test statistics. Since both test statistics have the distribution of the product of independent Beta random variables, it is possible to obtain near-exact distributions for both statistics in the form of Generalized Near-Integer Gamma distributions or mixtures of these distributions. For the independence test statistic, numerical studies and comparisons with asymptotic distributions proposed by other authors show the extremely high accuracy of the near-exact distributions developed as approximations to the exact distribution. Concerning the sphericity test statistic, comparisons with formerly developed near-exact distributions show the advantages of these new near-exact distributions.  相似文献

Spearman’s rank-correlation coefficient (also called Spearman’s rho) represents one of the best-known measures to quantify the degree of dependence between two random variables. As a copula-based dependence measure, it is invariant with respect to the distribution’s univariate marginal distribution functions. In this paper, we consider statistical tests for the hypothesis that all pairwise Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients in a multivariate random vector are equal. The tests are nonparametric and their asymptotic distributions are derived based on the asymptotic behavior of the empirical copula process. Only weak assumptions on the distribution function, such as continuity of the marginal distributions and continuous partial differentiability of the copula, are required for obtaining the results. A nonparametric bootstrap method is suggested for either estimating unknown parameters of the test statistics or for determining the associated critical values. We present a simulation study in order to investigate the power of the proposed tests. The results are compared to a classical parametric test for equal pairwise Pearson’s correlation coefficients in a multivariate random vector. The general setting also allows the derivation of a test for stochastic independence based on Spearman’s rho.  相似文献

The paper considers how to choose the joint distribution of several random variables each with a given marginal distribution so that their sum has a variance as small as possible. A theorem is given that allows the solution of this and of related problems for normal random variables. Several specific applications are given. Additional results are provided for radially symmetric joint distributions of three random variables when the sum is identically zero.  相似文献

Multivariate autoregressive models with exogenous variables (VARX) are often used in econometric applications. Many properties of the basic statistics for this class of models rely on the assumption of independent errors. Using results of Hong (Econometrica 64 (1996) 837), we propose a new test statistic for checking the hypothesis of non-correlation or independence in the Gaussian case. The test statistic is obtained by comparing the spectral density of the errors under the null hypothesis of independence with a kernel-based spectral density estimator. The asymptotic distribution of the statistic is derived under the null hypothesis. This test generalizes the portmanteau test of Hosking (J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 75 (1980) 602). The consistency of the test is established for a general class of static regression models with autocorrelated errors. Its asymptotic slope is derived and the asymptotic relative efficiency within the class of possible kernels is also investigated. Finally, the level and power of the resulting tests are also studied by simulation.  相似文献

Conditionally specified statistical models are frequently constructed from one-parameter exponential family conditional distributions. One way to formulate such a model is to specify the dependence structure among random variables through the use of a Markov random field (MRF). A common assumption on the Gibbsian form of the MRF model is that dependence is expressed only through pairs of random variables, which we refer to as the “pairwise-only dependence” assumption. Based on this assumption, J. Besag (1974, J. Roy. Statist. Soc. Ser. B36, 192–225) formulated exponential family “auto-models” and showed the form that one-parameter exponential family conditional densities must take in such models. We extend these results by relaxing the pairwise-only dependence assumption, and we give a necessary form that one-parameter exponential family conditional densities must take under more general conditions of multiway dependence. Data on the spatial distribution of the European corn borer larvae are fitted using a model with Bernoulli conditional distributions and several dependence structures, including pairwise-only, three-way, and four-way dependencies.  相似文献

We study three preferential attachment models where the parameters are such that the asymptotic degree distribution has infinite variance. Every edge is equipped with a nonnegative i.i.d. weight. We study the weighted distance between two vertices chosen uniformly at random, the typical weighted distance, and the number of edges on this path, the typical hopcount. We prove that there are precisely two universality classes of weight distributions, called the explosive and conservative class. In the explosive class, we show that the typical weighted distance converges in distribution to the sum of two i.i.d. finite random variables. In the conservative class, we prove that the typical weighted distance tends to infinity, and we give an explicit expression for the main growth term, as well as for the hopcount. Under a mild assumption on the weight distribution the fluctuations around the main term are tight.  相似文献

We investigate the properties of a class of discrete multivariate distributions whose univariate marginals have ordered categories, all the bivariate marginals, like in the Plackett distribution, have log-odds ratios which do not depend on cut points and all higher-order interactions are constrained to 0. We show that this class of distributions may be interpreted as a discretized version of a multivariate continuous distribution having univariate logistic marginals. Convenient features of this class relative to the class of ordered probit models (the discretized version of the multivariate normal) are highlighted. Relevant properties of this distribution like quadratic log-linear expansion, invariance to collapsing of adjacent categories, properties related to positive dependence, marginalization and conditioning are discussed briefly. When continuous explanatory variables are available, regression models may be fitted to relate the univariate logits (as in a proportional odds model) and the log-odds ratios to covariates.  相似文献

This paper shows that multivariate distributions can be characterized as maximum entropy (ME) models based on the well-known general representation of density function of the ME distribution subject to moment constraints. In this approach, the problem of ME characterization simplifies to the problem of representing the multivariate density in the ME form, hence there is no need for case-by-case proofs by calculus of variations or other methods. The main vehicle for this ME characterization approach is the information distinguishability relationship, which extends to the multivariate case. Results are also formulated that encapsulate implications of the multiplication rule of probability and the entropy transformation formula for ME characterization. The dependence structure of multivariate ME distribution in terms of the moments and the support of distribution is studied. The relationships of ME distributions with the exponential family and with bivariate distributions having exponential family conditionals are explored. Applications include new ME characterizations of many bivariate distributions, including some singular distributions.  相似文献

We study conditions under which an invariance property holds for the class of selection distributions. First, we consider selection distributions arising from two uncorrelated random vectors. In that setting, the invariance holds for the so-called C{\cal{C}} -class and for elliptical distributions. Second, we describe the invariance property for selection distributions arising from two correlated random vectors. The particular case of the distribution of quadratic forms and its invariance, under various selection distributions, is investigated in more details. We describe the application of our invariance results to sample variogram and covariogram estimators used in spatial statistics and provide a small simulation study for illustration. We end with a discussion about other applications, for example such as linear models and indices of temporal/spatial dependence.  相似文献

We use a recent characterization of the d-dimensional Archimedean copulas as the survival copulas of d-dimensional simplex distributions (McNeil and Nešlehová (2009) [1]) to construct new Archimedean copula families, and to examine the relationship between their dependence properties and the radial parts of the corresponding simplex distributions. In particular, a new formula for Kendall’s tau is derived and a new dependence ordering for non-negative random variables is introduced which generalises the Laplace transform order. We then generalise the Archimedean copulas to obtain Liouville copulas, which are the survival copulas of Liouville distributions and which are non-exchangeable in general. We derive a formula for Kendall’s tau of Liouville copulas in terms of the radial parts of the corresponding Liouville distributions.  相似文献

The dependence concept of weak association is introduced and is shown to be equivalent to positive quadrant dependence. Furthermore, a characterization of independence in the class of positive quadrant dependent random variables by means of moment conditions is proved. Both results generalize some theorems proved by Lehmann and Jogdeo for the two- and three-dimensional case.  相似文献

A nonparametric test of the mutual independence between many numerical random vectors is proposed. This test is based on a characterization of mutual independence defined from probabilities of half-spaces in a combinatorial formula of Möbius. As such, it is a natural generalization of tests of independence between univariate random variables using the empirical distribution function. If the number of vectors is p and there are n observations, the test is defined from a collection of processes Rn,A, where A is a subset of {1,…,p} of cardinality |A|>1, which are asymptotically independent and Gaussian. Without the assumption that each vector is one-dimensional with a continuous cumulative distribution function, any test of independence cannot be distribution free. The critical values of the proposed test are thus computed with the bootstrap which is shown to be consistent. Another similar test, with the same asymptotic properties, for the serial independence of a multivariate stationary sequence is also proposed. The proposed test works when some or all of the marginal distributions are singular with respect to Lebesgue measure. Moreover, in singular cases described in Section 4, the test inherits useful invariance properties from the general affine invariance property.  相似文献

In the framework of ARMA models, we consider testing the reliability of the standard asymptotic covariance matrix (ACM) of the least-squares estimator. The standard formula for this ACM is derived under the assumption that the errors are independent and identically distributed, and is in general invalid when the errors are only uncorrelated. The test statistic is based on the difference between a conventional estimator of the ACM of the least-squares estimator of the ARMA coefficients and its robust HAC-type version. The asymptotic distribution of the HAC estimator is established under the null hypothesis of independence, and under a large class of alternatives. The asymptotic distribution of the proposed statistic is shown to be a standard χ2 under the null, and a noncentral χ2 under the alternatives. The choice of the HAC estimator is discussed through asymptotic power comparisons. The finite sample properties of the test are analyzed via Monte Carlo simulation.  相似文献

Summary Distribution of sum of 0–1 random variables is considered. No assumption is made on the independence of the 0–1 variables. Using the notion of “central binomial moments” we derive distributional properties and the conditions of convergence to standard distributions in a clear and unified manner.  相似文献

On the distribution of the (un)bounded sum of random variables   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We propose a general treatment of random variables aggregation accounting for the dependence among variables and bounded or unbounded support of their sum. The approach is based on the extension to the concept of convolution to dependent variables, involving copula functions. We show that some classes of copula functions (such as Marshall-Olkin and elliptical) cannot be used to represent the dependence structure of two variables whose sum is bounded, while Archimedean copulas can be applied only if the generator becomes linear beyond some point. As for the application, we study the problem of capital allocation between risks when the sum of losses is bounded.  相似文献

We consider the efficiency and the power of the normal theory test for independence after a Box-Cox transformation. We obtain an expression for the correlation between the variates after a Box-Cox transformation in terms of the correlation on the normal scale. We discuss the efficiency of test of independence after a Box-Cox transformation and show that for the family considered it is always more efficient to conduct the test of independence based on Pearson correlation coefficient after transformation to normality. Power of test of independence before and after a Box-Cox transformation is studied for a finite sample size using Monte Carlo simulation. Our results show that we can increase the power of the normal-theory test for independence after estimating the transformation parameter from the data. The procedure has application for generating non-negative random variables with prescribed correlation.  相似文献

Certain constructions of copulas can be interpreted as an eigendecomposition of a kernel. We study some properties of the eigenfunctions and their integrals of a covariance kernel related to a bivariate distribution. The covariance between functions of random variables in terms of the cumulative distribution function is used. Some bounds for the trace of the kernel and some inequalities for a continuous random variable concerning a function and its derivative are obtained. We also obtain relations to diagonal expansions and canonical correlation analysis and, as a by-product, series of constants for some particular distributions.  相似文献
