The enthalpy relaxation of a series of linear amorphous polyesters (poly(propylene isophthalate) (PPIP), poly(propylene terephthalate) (PPTP), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PETP), and poly(dipropylene terephthalate) (PDPT)) has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). These polyesters have been annealed at equal undercooling below their respective glass transition temperatures, Tg, (Tg − 27°C, Tg − 15°C, and Tg − 9°C) for periods of time from 15 min to 480 h. The key parameters of structural relaxation, namely the apparent activation energy (Δh*), the nonlinearity parameter (x) and the nonexponentiality parameter (β), have been determined for each polyester and related to an effective relaxation rate (1/τeff) and to the chemical structure. We observe that the variation of the structural relaxation parameters shows a trend that is common to other polymeric systems, whereby an increase of x and β corresponds a decrease in Δh*. The comparison of these parameters in PETP and in PPTP gives information about the effect of the introduction of a methyl group pendant from the main chain; the x parameter increases (i.e., a reduced contribution of the structure to the relaxation times), β increases (i.e., a narrow distribution of relaxation times), and Δh* decreases. Additionally, enthalpy relaxation experiments show that a decrease of Δh* correlates with an increase of 1/τeff, when they are measured at a fixed value of the excess enthalpy, δH. The introduction of an isopropyl ether group in PDPT with respect to PPTP decreases both x and β, but increases Δh*, which the rate of relaxation decreases. The ring substitution in PPTP and PPIP originates less significant changes in the structural parameters. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 36 : 113–126, 1998  相似文献

The enthalpy relaxation of a partially cured (70%) epoxy resin, derived from diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A cured by methyl-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride with accelerator, has been investigated. The key parameters of the structural relaxation (the apparent activation energy Δh*, the nonlinearity parameter x, and the nonexponentiality parameter β) are compared with those of the fully cured epoxy resin. The aging rates, characterized by the dependences of the enthalpy loss and peak temperature on log(annealing time), are greater in the partially cured epoxy than they are in the fully cured resin at an equivalent aging temperature (Ta = Tg − 20°C). There is a significant reduction in Δh*, from 1100 kJ mol−1 for the fully cured system to 615 kJ mol−1, as the degree of cure is reduced. The parameter x determined by the peak-shift method appears essentially independent of the degree of cure (x = 0.41 ± 0.03 for the partially cured resin compared with 0.42 ± 0.03 obtained previously for the fully cured resin), and does not follow the usually observed correlation of increasing x as Δh* decreases. This invariability of the parameter x seems to indicate that it is determined essentially by the local chemical structure of the backbone chain, and rather little by the supramolecular structure. On the other hand, the estimated nonexponentiality parameter β lies between 0.3 and 0.456, which is significantly lower than in the fully cured epoxy (β ≅ 0.5), indicative of a broadening of the distribution of relaxation times as the degree of cross-linking is reduced. Like the parameter x, this also does not follow the usual correlation with Δh*. These results are discussed in the framework of strong and fragile behavior of glass-forming systems, but it is difficult to reconcile these results in any simple way with the concept of strength and fragility. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Enthalpy relaxation of epoxy–diamine thermosets of different crosslink lengths (CLL) has been studied by DSC. The epoxy resins based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A were cured with ethylenediamine (FEDA), and diamines of polyoxypropylene of 2.6 and 5.6 oxypropylene units, named FJ230 and FJ400, respectively. As was expected, increasing the CLL decreases the glass transition temperature Tg from 121°C (FEDA) to 47°C (FJ400). Aging experiments at Tg − 20 K for each resin permit the determination of the enthalpy loss, the relaxation rate per decade (βH), and the nonlinearity parameter, x. The apparent activation energy, Δh*, and the nonexponentiality parameter β are found for each resin from intrinsic cycles in which the sample is heated at 10 K min−1 following cooling at various rates through the glass transition region. An increase of CLL is related to an increase of βH, and of the nonlinearity parameter. In agreement with the general trend for thermoplastic polymers, the increase of the parameter x is correlated with a decrease of Δh* and with an increase in the nonexponentiality parameter. Application of the Adam–Gibbs (AG) theory reveals that the parameters B and Tf/T2 increase with CLL, corresponding to a decrease of the nonlinear behavior of the glassy epoxies. However, the T2 values calculated in this way appear unrealistic, and the alternative assumption that T2 = Tg −51.6 K, making use of the “universal” WLF constant, leads to a much smaller variation of B, which nevertheless still increases with CLL. From a consideration of the minimum number of configurations required for a cooperative rearrangement, it is argued that the elementary activation energy Δμ increases, and the minimum size of the cooperatively rearranging region decreases as CLL increases. This is consistent with the relaxation process becoming more cooperative as the CLL decreases, as is suggested by the decrease in the value of β. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The stress relaxation under large step equibiaxial elongation for low‐density polyethylene with long‐chain branches revealed that the time‐strain separability holds in relaxation modulus GB(t, εB), and damping function hBB) exhibits weaker equibiaxial elongational strain εB dependence than that predicted by the Doi–Edwards theory without the independent alignment approximation. Dependencies of damping function h(γ) for step shear deformation and hBB) on stretch ratio α of polymer contour length and orientation of a polymer chain in direction of the maximum orientation were evaluated, and it was found that the α dependencies of h(γ) and hBB) are different, whereas dependencies of h(γ) and hBB) on the orientation coincide fairly well. These results indicate that the damping is dominated by the chain orientation rather than α. This implies that withdrawal of long‐chain branches into tube of a backbone chain occurs when the orientation of the long‐chain branches is large and friction force against the branch point withdrawal is small. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The dielectric permittivity and loss spectra of an equimolar liquid mixture of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A and cyclohexylamine have been studied during the liquid's isothermal polymerization or curing in separate experiments at different temperatures and thereafter during the postcuring, both on rate-heating and isothermally. The spectra obtained during the growth of the linear chain polymer during the curing and postcuring show the evolution of an intermediate relaxation process whose position in the frequency plane remains relatively insensitive to the decrease in the configurational entropy during the postcuring, but whose strength increases. Postcuring ceases to occur once the calorimetric glass-liquid transition temperature of 345 K, corresponding to the ultimately formed polymeric state, has been reached. The increase in the number of covalent bonds, n, formed during curing and postcuring decreased the equilibrium dielectric permittivity, εs, and increased the characteristic relaxation time, τ0, for all curing and postcuring conditions. For a fixed temperature and n, (dεs/dT) and (dτ0/dT), as well as the values εs and τ0 of the ultimately formed state of the polymers differ significantly when the thermal history of polymerization differs. The slow dynamics in the glass-liquid transition region were analyzed in terms of the enthalpy relaxation and fictive temperature concepts. The distribution of relaxation times for these dynamics correspond to the stretched exponential parameter of 0.6, which is significantly greater than 0.39 determined for the dielectric α-relaxation spectra measured at a temperature 30 K higher. The enthalpy relaxation involves a narrower distribution of intermolecular barriers than dielectric relaxation. The results also show that the recently proposed method for determining the gelation time from the plots of the imaginary component of electrical impedance lacks scientific merit. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The enthalpy relaxation of an epoxy–anhydride resin was studied by physical aging and frequency‐dependence experiments with alternating differential scanning calorimetry (ADSC), which is a temperature‐modulated differential scanning calorimetry technique. The samples were aged at 80 °C, about 26 K below the glass‐transition temperature, for periods up to 3800 h and then scanned under the following modulation conditions: underlying heating rate of 1 K min−1, amplitude of 0.5 K, and period of 1 min. The enthalpy loss was calculated by the total heat‐flow signal, and its variation with the log (aging time) gives a relaxation rate (per decade), this value being in good agreement with that calculated by conventional DSC. The enthalpy loss was also analyzed in terms of the nonreversing heat flow, revealing that this property is not suitable for calculating enthalpy loss. The effect of aging on the modulus of the complex heat capacity, |Cp*|, is shown by a sharper variation on the low side of the glass transition and an increase in the inflexional slope of |Cp*|. Likewise, the phase angle also becomes sharper in the low‐temperature side of the relaxation. The area under the corrected out‐phase heat capacity remains fairly constant with aging. The dependence of the dynamic glass transition, measured at the midpoint of the variation of |Cp*|, on ln(frequency) allows one to determine an apparent activation energy, Δh*, which gives information about the temperature dependence of the relaxation times in equilibrium over a range close to the glass transition. The values of Δh*, determined from ADSC experiments in a range of frequencies between 4.2 and 33 mHz and at an amplitude of 0.5 K, and an underlying heating rate of 1 K min−1, were analyzed and compared with that obtained by conventional DSC from the dependence of the fictive temperature on the cooling rate. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A number of blends based on suspension poly(vinyl chloride) and stabilizers with poly(ethylene) chlorinated in a fluidized-bed reactor containing 21.8% chlorine, hydroxyl-terminated poly(butadiene), and ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer have been studied using such methods as thermally stimulated current depolarization and dynamic mechanical analysis. Some dielectric and thermodynamic parameters (τmax, τo, Ea, ΔH*, ΔSE*, ΔG*, μeff) have been determined. Blends containing randomly chlorinated poly(ethylene) exhibited dipole–dipole interactions between the macromolecules of poly(vinyl chloride) which decreased at the expense of the long sequences of nonchlorinated methylene groups. Simultaneously, an increased physical interaction between poly(vinyl chloride) and the additives was observed in blends containing chlorinated poly(ethylene) and/or hydroxyl-terminated poly(butadiene), and ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer. On the basis of the data of dynamic mechanical analysis obtained a heterogeneous structure of the blends is suggested. The development of a boundary interfacial layer with a proper region of relaxation proves the formation of compatible structures between the components. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This article presents the SEC analysis of branched polyisobutylene PIB and polystyrene PS with high molecular weight and broad multimodal molecular weight distribution. Both polymers were synthesized using an inimer technique, which results in long‐chain branched polymers with statistical branching and broad multimodal distributions. Using high resolution multidetector Size Exclusion Chromatography SEC the polymers were analyzed based on three branching factors: g = (Rz,br/Rz,lin)Mw; h = (〈Rhz,br/〈Rhz,lin)Mw ; and ρ = (R 1/2/〈Rhz). It is generally accepted that for monodisperse branched polymers g and h < 1. In the case of our polydisperse PIB and PS, it was seen that g and h > 1, and ρ increases with molar mass and the number of chain ends as predicted earlier. The multidetector SEC system allowed for the separation of branching and polydispersity, reported here for the first time experimentally. The g parameter as a function of DPi was compared to the theory developed by Zimm and Stockmayer. The plots followed a similar trend, but were shifted by a factor related to the average chain length between branching points. The ρ parameter decreased with increasing DPi, as predicted theoretically by Kajiwara. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

Composition profiles develop around growing PVDF spherulites in a blend with PMMA. These profiles assume stationary courses after a certain crystallization time provided that the overall degree of crystallinity is not too high. The composition-dependent growth rate and the diffusion-controlled remove of the surplus PMMA from the spherulite surface are then in a stationary equilibrium. The internal structure of the spherulites will then be homogeneous, too. Upon isothermal crystallization of a PVDF/PMMA = 60/40 (wt %) blend at 160°C for at least 4 h, the spherulites internal degree of crystallinity xc as related to the PVDF fraction obeys the inequality 55 wt % ≤ xc ≤ 84 wt %. The overall PMMA content within the spherulites as averaged over its whole inside has been determined by IR microscopy. It amounts to about 15 wt %. In contrast, the PMMA content of the amorphous phase within the spherulites (averaged again over its whole inside) ranges between 28 and 52 wt %. This composition jumps at the spherulite surface to 52 wt %. From the slope of the composition profiles outside the spherulites that have a width of more than 50 μm, the effective chain diffusion coefficient in blends as averaged over both components can be calculated to amount to (250 ± 100) μm2h−1. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. To control molecular mobility and study its effects on mechanical properties, we synthesized two series of poly(ester carbonate) and polycarbonate copolymers with different linkages: (Bxt)n (x = 3, 5, 7, 9) and (BxT)n (x = 1, 3, 5, 7, 9), where t represents the terephthalate, T represents the tetramethyl bisphenol A carbonate linkages, and B is the conventional bisphenol‐A (BPA) carbonate. These two series of materials have distinct differences in their relaxation behaviors and chain mobility, as indicated by the π‐flip motion of the phenylene rings in the Bx blocks. Uniaxial tensile tests of the copolymers indicate that the brittle–ductile transition (BDT) temperatures of the copolymers are correlated to whether the γ‐relaxation peaks due to the Bx sequence is fully established. The materials possessing more fully established low‐temperature γ peaks give rise to a lower BDT. Also, the locations of the γ peaks are correlated to the ring flips of the Bx blocks of polymer chains. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 39: 1730–1740, 2001  相似文献

Dynamic light-scattering measurements have been made on the “soft” polymer: poly(n-laurylmethacrylate) (PLMA) in solution in ethyl acetate over the concentration range 0.1 < C < 0.9 g/mL as well as melt PLMA. With the concentrated solutions, the hydrodynamic screening length (ξh) scales with an exponent of −0.7 below C ≈ 0.3 g/mL. Importantly, ξh decreases above 0.3 g/mL, and the concentration dependence increases strongly above this concentration. The latter contrasts with the behavior in a variety of well-studied poly(styrene) solutions, which are inevitably investigated close to the glass point, and for which there is a pronounced increase of ξh over the same concentration range. In PLMA solutions, the decrease in ξh parallels the behavior of the static screening length (ξs) which has been observed in other flexible polymer systems. Dynamic “clusters” (also termed “long-range density fluctuations”) contribute a large part of the scattered intensity above the concentration 0.6 g/mL and also in melt PLMA which contrasts with poly(styrene) systems in which they are absent. In common with the clusters recently observed in another polymeric melt, poly(methyl-p-tolylsiloxane) (ref. 9) this component is diffusive. While, however, in the latter system the clusters “melt out” at 90°C, we find in the well-matured PLMA systems that the cluster amplitude is temperature-independent (within the temperature-time range studied) in the solutions up to at least 80°C and up to at least 150°C in the melt, which were the highest temperatures examined. The clusters in the PLMA systems have a correlation length of the magnitude 65 nm in the melt, whereas in the solutions this dimension varies between 73 nm at 0.9 g/mL to 126 nm at 0.7 g/mL. In PLMA the clusters are presumed to arise from local segregation owing to the large paraffinic side groups on the chain. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The morphology and ionic conductivity of poly(1‐n‐alkyl‐3‐vinylimidazolium)‐based homopolymers polymerized from ionic liquids were investigated as a function of the alkyl chain length and counterion type. In general, X‐ray scattering showed three features: (i) backbone‐to‐backbone, (ii) anion‐to‐anion, and (iii) pendant‐to‐pendant characteristic distances. As the alkyl chain length increases, the backbone‐to‐backbone separation increases. As the size of counterion increases, the anion‐to‐anion scattering peak becomes apparent and its correlation length increases. The X‐ray scattering features shift to lower angles as the temperature increases due to thermal expansion. The ionic conductivity results show that the glass transition temperature (Tg) is a dominant, but not exclusive, parameter in determining ion transport. The Tg‐independent ionic conductivity decreases as the backbone‐to‐backbone spacing increases. Further interpretation of the ionic conductivity using the Vogel–Fulcher–Tammann equation enabled the correlation between polymer morphology and ionic conductivity, which highlights the importance of anion hoping between adjacent polymer backbones. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The mechanical and dielectric relaxation of a set of aromatic-aliphatic polyamides containing ether linkages have been examined as a function of temperature (−140 to 190°C) and frequency (3 to 106 Hz). The polymers differ in the orientation (meta and para) of the aromatic rings, in the length of the aliphatic chain, and in the number of ether linkages per repeating unit. Dynamic mechanical experiments showed three main relaxation peaks related to the glass transition temperature of the polymers (α relaxation), the subglass relaxations associated to the absorbed water molecules (β) and to the motion of the aliphatic moieties (γ). Dielectric experiments showed two subglass relaxation processes (β and γ) that correlates with the mechanical β and γ relaxations, and a conduction process (σ) above 50°C that masks the relaxation associated to the glass transition. A molecular interpretation is attempted to explain the position and intensity of the relaxation, studying the influence of the proportion of para- or meta- oriented phenylene rings, the presence of ether linkages and the length of the aliphatic chain. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The addition of mixture of polystyrene‐b‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PS‐b‐PNIPAM) and polystyrene homopolymer (h‐PS) in tetrahydrofuran dropwise into water leads to nanoparticles with a PS core and a thermally sensitive PNIPAM shell. The effects of the ratio of the homopolymer to copolymer and temperature on the formation and stabilization of the dispersion were investigated by using a combination of static and dynamic laser light scattering. PNIPAM shell continuously collapses as temperature increases in the range 20–40 °C. Such formed particles are stable even at temperatures much higher than lower critical solution temperature (LCST ~ 32 °C) of PNIPAM. Our results reveal that the area occupied per hydrophilic PNIPAM chain on the hydrophobic PS core remains nearly a constant regardless of the amount of h‐PS in the polymer mixture. This clearly indicates that the surface area occupied per hydrophilic group is a critical parameter for stabilizing particles dispersed in water. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of water sorption on the dielectric relaxation processes of nylon-6 samples with water concentrations ranging from the dry to the water-saturated polymer has been studied by thermally stimulated depolarization currents experiments in a broad temperature range, from 77 to 365 K. The strengths of the low-temperature modes, γ- and β-peaks, are affected in opposite ways by the water concentration, h, as the first one shows a decrease in intensity and the second one grows as h increases. The precise determination of the relaxation parameters is made by the decomposition in elementary Debye processes and best fitting to the experimental profile of the complex peak. For h < 3%, the reorienting energies are almost independent of the water content, and the most significant intensity variations occur. The firmly bound water is held responsible for these effects. As for the higher temperature zone besides the α-peak, which is the dielectric manifestation of the glass transition, intermediate temperatures modes are observed at high h values and are originated by the loosely bound water, while the highest temperature peak is attributed to a Maxwell–Wagner interfacial polarization. The characteristic parameters of the α-mode are determined and related to the plasticization effect of water. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 35: 2879–2888, 1997  相似文献

Polymer electrolytes, (PEO:LiClO4)+x IL (1‐Buty‐3‐methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate) with varying concentration of IL; x = 0,5,10,15,20 wt % have been prepared by solution cast technique and characterized by X‐Ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetery, FTIR, conductivity and dielectric relaxation measurements in the frequency range of 100 Hz–5 MHz. Temperature dependence of relaxation frequency and conductivity were found to be typical of thermally activated process both at T > Tm and T < Tm. Composition dependence of conductivity, dielectric relaxation, and degree of crystallinity has also been studied. On addition of IL, the degree of crystallinity after a decrease at 5 wt % IL increases slightly at 10 wt % and then finally decreasing. Variation of conductivity and relaxation frequency with composition could only be partly explained on the basis of variation of degree of crystallinity. An additional feature of ion–ion interaction (contact ion pair formation between IL or salt cations and their associated anions) has been invoked which was supported by FTIR studies. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The orientation of the side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers (LCP) containing phenylbenzoate mesogenic groups in the magnetic field was examined with 2H NMR spectroscopy. The influence of the degree of polymerization as well as the length of the methylene tail group (n = 1–4) have been established. The decrease of the order parameter S of the LCPs with an increased length of the tail group was found. The order parameter S of LCPs does not depend on the degree of polymerization. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 2044–2048, 2002  相似文献

The effect of Lucentite™ STN nanoclay on the relaxation behavior of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanocomposites was investigated using dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS) and wide- and small-angle X-ray scattering. Lucentite™ STN is a synthetic nanoclay based on hectorite structure containing an organic modifier between the hectorite layers. The addition of this nanoclay to PVDF results in preferential formation of the beta-crystallographic phase. When the STN content increased to 5% and 10%, only the beta-phase was observed. Bragg long period and lamellar thickness both decrease with STN addition. The relaxation rates for processes termed αa (glass transition, related to polymer chain motions in the amorphous regions) and αc (related to polymer chain motions in the crystalline regions and fold surfaces) can be described either with the Vogel-Fulcher-Tamman equation or with Arrhenius behavior, respectively. DRS shows that the αa relaxation rate increases with the concentration of STN because of the reduction of intermolecular correlations between the polymer chains, caused by the presence of layered silicate nanoclay particles, which serve to segregate polymer chains in the amorphous regions. Comparing samples with beta-crystal phase dominant, the relaxation rate for the αc relaxation also increases with concentration of STN in all nanocomposite samples. Dielectric properties at low frequencies are dominated by the dc conductivity, and as more STN is added, the conductivity increases rapidly. The addition of 10% STN makes the dc conductivity increase by almost four decades when compared with neat PVDF. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The structural relaxation of Ge38S62 glass has been studied by length dilatometry and calorimetry. The Tool-Narayanaswamy-Moynihan model was applied on obtained data of structural relaxation and parameters of this model were determined: Δh*= 483±2 kJ mol-1, ln(A/s)= -81±1, β= 0.7±0.1 and x=0.6±0.1. Both dilatometric and calorimetric relaxation data were compared on the basis of the fictive relaxation rate. It was found that the relaxation rates are very similar and well correspond to the prediction of phenomenological model. We investigated the segmental and terminal relaxation dynamics of a well‐characterized disordered diblock copolymer, poly(isoprene‐b‐vinyl ethylene) (PI‐PVE), and miscible blends of polyisoprene (PI)/poly(vinyl ethylene) (PVE), using dielectric and viscoelastic spectroscopies. Generally, the concentration fluctuation (CF) amplitude of a disordered diblock copolymer is smaller than that of the miscible blend, especially in a length scale longer than the size of the whole block chain. To test whether the difference in the CF amplitudes causes the difference in the segmental relaxation spectra, we compared the shape of the dielectric loss curves between PI‐PVE and PI/PVE with the same composition (PI/PVE ratio = 17:83). However, no appreciable difference was observed, indicating that the CF amplitudes in PI‐PVE and PI/PVE are not so different in the length scale of the segmental motions. We also examined the effect of distinct friction coefficients of the PI and PVE chains on the terminal relaxation dynamics by comparisons of the viscoelastic and dielectric normal mode relaxations in PI‐PVE. The former probes the whole chain motion and the latter probes motions of the PI block. Shift factors (aT) for the viscoelastic and dielectric relaxations were compared. The dielectric normal mode aT was found to have weaker temperature dependence than the viscoelastic aT, which indicates that the friction for the PI block chain is lower than the average friction for the PI‐PVE chain. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
