The synthesis of block copolymers consisting of a polyethylene segment and either a poly(meth)acrylate or polystyrene segment was accomplished through the combination of postmetallocene-mediated ethylene polymerization and subsequent atom transfer radical polymerization. A vinyl-terminated polyethylene (number-average molecular weight = 1800, weight-average molecular weight/number-average molecular weight =1.70) was synthesized by the polymerization of ethylene with a phenoxyimine zirconium complex as a catalyst activated with methylalumoxane (MAO). This polyethylene was efficiently converted into an atom transfer radical polymerization macroinitiator by the addition of α-bromoisobutyric acid to the vinyl chain end, and the polyethylene macroinitiator was used for the atom transfer radical polymerization of n-butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, or styrene; this resulted in defined polyethylene-b-poly(n-butyl acrylate), polyethylene-b-poly(methyl methacrylate), and polyethylene-b-polystyrene block copolymers. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, the polymerization of (2‐hydroxyethyl) acrylate (HEA), in polar media, using Cu(0)‐mediated radical polymerization also called single‐electron transfer–living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) is reported. The kinetics aspects of both the homopolymerization and the copolymerization from a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) macroinitiator were analyzed by 1H NMR. The effects of both the ligand and the solvent were studied. The polymerization was shown to reach very high monomer conversions and to proceed in a well‐controlled fashion in the presence of tris[2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine Me6‐TREN and N, N,N′, N″, N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). SET‐LRP of HEA was also led in water, and it was shown to be faster than in DMSO. In pure water, Me6‐TREN allowed a better control over the molar masses and polydispersity indices than PMDETA and TREN. Double hydrophilic PEO‐b‐PHEA block copolymers, exhibiting various PHEA block lengths up to 100 HEA units, were synthesized, in the same manner, from a bromide‐terminated PEO macroinitiator. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A bromine capped star‐shaped poly(methyl methacrylate) (S‐PMMA‐Br) was synthesized with CuBr/sparteine/PT‐Br as a catalyst and initiator to polymerize methyl methacrylate (MMA) according to atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Then, with S‐PMMA‐Br as a macroinitiator, a series of new liquid crystal rod–coil star block copolymers with different molecular weights and low polydispersity were obtained by this method. The block architecture {coil‐conformation of the MMA segment and rigid‐rod conformation of 2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl] styrene segment} of the four‐armed rod–coil star block copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR. The liquid‐crystalline behavior of these copolymers was studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. We found that the liquid‐crystalline behavior depends on the molecular weight of the rigid segment; only the four‐armed rod–coil star block copolymers with each arm's Mn,GPC of the rigid block beyond 0.91 × 104 g/mol could form liquid‐crystalline phases above the glass‐transition temperature of the rigid block. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A stable nitroxyl radical functionalized with an initiating group for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), 4‐(2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyloxy)‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy (Br‐TEMPO), was synthesized by the reaction of 4‐hydroxyl‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy with 2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyl bromide. Stable free radical polymerization of styrene was then carried out using a conventional thermal initiator, dibenzoyl peroxide, along with Br‐TEMPO. The obtained polystyrene had an active bromine atom for ATRP at the ω‐end of the chain and was used as the macroinitiator for ATRP of methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate to prepare block copolymers. The molecular weights of the resulting block copolymers at different monomer conversions shifted to higher molecular weights and increased with monomer conversion. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A five‐arm star‐shaped poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with terminal bromide groups was used as a macroinitiator for the atom transfer radical polymerization of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA), resulting in five‐arm star‐shaped poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) block copolymers. The polymerization proceeded in a controlled way using a copper(I)bromide/pentamethyl diethylenetriamine catalytic system in acetonitrile as solvent. The hydrolysis of the tBA blocks of the amphiphilic star‐shaped PEO‐b‐PtBA block copolymer resulted in dihydrophilic star structures. The encapsulation of the star‐block copolymers and their release properties in acid environment have been followed by UV‐spectroscopy and color changes, using the dye methyl orange as a hydrophilic guest molecule. Characterization of the structures has been done by 1H NMR, size exclusion chromatography, MALDI‐TOF, and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New, water soluble poly(glycidol) (PGl) macroinitiators for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) were synthesized. This new class of macroinitiators were prepared in a three‐step process. First, series of well‐defined ω‐hydroxyl functional poly(glycidol acetal)s with different molecular weights was synthesized via anionic polymerization followed by quantitative termination of anionically growing active sites. End capping was achieved by treatment of living chain ends with water. The living nature of the system and termination reaction is discussed. In the second stage, monofunctional poly(glycidol acetal)s were functionalized by esterification with 2‐chloropropionyl chloride. Finally, selective deprotection (hydrolysis) of acetal protective groups was performed. As simultaneous partial cleavage of ester bond of attached ATRP moieties was unavoidable, the final functionality of macroinitiator calculated from 1H NMR varied in the range 85–95%. The obtained (2‐chloropropionyl) poly(glycidol) macroinitiator with DP = 55 and 90% functionality was successfully used in ATRP polymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) at room temperature in the DMF/water mixture. Linear block copolymers with relatively narrow molecular weight distribution and controlled composition were obtained and characterized with 1H NMR and SEC‐MALLS measurements. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A simple, one‐step procedure has been developed for the preparation of bifunctional initiators capable of polymerizing monomers suitable for atom‐transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and ring‐opening polymerization (ROP). These bifunctional initiators were employed for making narrow disperse poly(styrene) macroinitiators, which were subsequently used for the ROP of various lactides to yield poly(styrene‐block‐lactide) copolymers. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of these block copolymers are interesting in that it shows a two‐step degradation curve with the first step corresponding to the degradation of poly(lactide) segment and the second step associated with the poly(styrene) segment of the block copolymer. This nature of the block copolymer makes it possible to estimate the block copolymer content by TGA in addition to the 1H NMR spectroscopic analysis. Thus, this study for the first time highlights the possibility of making porous materials by thermal means which are otherwise obtained by base hydrolysis. The bifunctional initiators were prepared by the esterification of 3‐hydroxy, 4‐hydroxy, and 3,5‐dihydroxy benzyl alcohols with α‐bromoisobutyryl bromide and 2‐bromobutyryl bromide. A mixture of products was obtained, which were purified by column chromatography. The esterified benzyl alcohols were employed in the polymerization of styrene under copper (Cu)‐catalyzed ATRP conditions to yield macroinitiators with low polydispersity. These macroinitiators were subsequently used in the ROP of L ‐, DL ‐, and mixture of lactides. The formation of block copolymers was confirmed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), spectroscopic and thermal characterizations. The molecular weight of the block copolymers was always higher than the macroinitiator, and the GPC chromatogram was symmetrical indicating the uniform initiation of ROP by the macroinitiators. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Block copolymers based on poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, and a series of poly(aromatic sulfonate) sequences were synthesized from controlled radical polymerizations (CRPs). According to the aromatic monomers, appropriate techniques of CRP were chosen: either iodine transfer polymerization (ITP) or atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from PVDF‐I macromolecular chain transfer agents (CTAs) or PVDF‐CCl3 macroinitiator, respectively. These precursors were produced either by ITP of VDF with C6F13I or by radical telomerization of VDF with chloroform, respectively. Poly(vinylidene fluoride)‐b‐poly(sodium styrene sulfonate), PVDF‐b‐PSSS, block copolymers were produced from both techniques via a direct polymerization of sodium styrene sulfonate (SSS) monomer or an indirect way with the use of styrene sulfonate ethyl ester (SSE) as a protected monomer. Although the reaction led to block copolymers, the kinetics of ITP of SSS showed that PVDF‐I macromolecular CTAs were not totally efficient because a limitation of the CTA consumption (56%) was observed. This was probably explained by both the low activity of the CTA (that contained inefficient PVDF‐CF2CH2? I) and a fast propagation rate of the monomer. That behavior was also noted in the ITP of SSE. On the other hand, ATRP of SSS initiated by PVDF‐CCl3 was more controlled up to 50% of conversion leading to PVDF‐b‐PSSS block copolymer with an average number molar mass of 6000 g·mol?1. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polypropylene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PP-b-PMMA) and Polypropylene-block-poly(N-isopropylacryramide) (PP-b-PNIPAAm) block copolymers were successfully synthesized by radical polymerizations of MMA or NIPAAm with polypropylene (PP) macroinitiators. Polypropylene macroinitiators were prepared by a series of end functionalization of pyrolysis PP via hydroalumination, oxidation and esterification reactions. The PP macroinitiators thus obtained could initiate radical polymerizations of MMA or NIPAAm by using transition metal catalyst systems, and 1H NMR analysis and gel permeation chromatography measurement confirmed the formation of PP-b-PMMA and PP-b-PNIPAAm block copolymers. In addition, the length of the incorporated PMMA or PNIPAAm segments in these block copolymers was controllable by the feed ratio between the monomer and the PP macroinitiator, and their molecular weights were estimated to be 35700 and 68700 (PMMA) and 1760 and 13300 (PNIPAAm), respectively. Transmission electron microscopy of the polymers obtained by NIPAAm polymerization revealed specific morphological features that reflected the difference of PNIPAAm segment length. This article demonstrates a facile and efficient method to combine olefin coordination polymerization with atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) for the synthesis of isotactic polypropylene (i‐PP)‐based functional diblock copolymers. The chemistry involves a styryl‐capped i‐PP precursor prepared through the controlled consecutive chain transfer reaction, first to 1,2‐bis(4‐vinylphenyl)ethane and then to hydrogen in propylene polymerization mediated by an isospecific metallocene catalyst. The i‐PP precursor can be quantitatively transformed into i‐PP terminated with a 1‐chloroethylbezene group (i‐PP‐t‐Cl) by a straightforward hydrochlorination process using hydrogen chloride. With the resultant i‐PP‐t‐Cl as a macroinitiator of ATRP, methyl methacrylate (MMA) polymerization was exemplified in the presence of CuBr/pentamethyldiethylenetriamine, preparing i‐PP‐b‐PMMA copolymers of different PMMA contents. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Different diblock copolymers constituted by one segment of a monomer supporting a reactive functional group, like allyl methacrylate (AMA), were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Bromo‐terminated polymers, like polystyrene (PS), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA) were employed as macroinitiators to form the other blocks. Copolymerizations were carried out using copper chloride with N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as the catalyst system in benzonitrile solution at 70 °C. At the early stage, the ATRP copolymerizations yielded well‐defined linear block copolymers. However, with the polymerization progress a change in the macromolecular architecture takes place due to the secondary reactions caused by the allylic groups, passing to a branched and/or star‐shaped structure until finally yielding gel at monomer conversion around 40% or higher. The block copolymers were characterized by means of size exclusion chromatography (SEC), 1H NMR spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In addition, one of these copolymers, specifically P(BA‐b‐AMA), was satisfactorily modified through osmylation reaction to obtain the subsequent amphiphilic diblock copolymer of P(BA‐b‐DHPMA), where DHPMA is 2,3‐dihydroxypropyl methacrylate; demonstrating the feasibility of side‐chain modification of the functional obtained copolymers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of ferrocene‐based well‐defined amphiphilic graft copolymers, consisting of hydrophilic poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate] (PPEGMEA) backbone and hydrophobic poly(2‐acryloyloxyethyl ferrocenecarboxylate) (PAEFC) side chains were synthesized by successive single‐electron‐transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The backbone was prepared by SET‐LRP of PEGMEA macromonomer, and it was then treated with lithium di‐isopropylamide and 2‐bromopropionyl bromide at ?78 °C to give PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator. The targeted well‐defined graft copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.32) were synthesized via ATRP of AEFC initiated by PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator, and the molecular weights of the backbone and side chains were both controllable. The electro‐chemical behaviors of graft copolymers were studied by cyclic voltammetry, and it was found that graft copolymers were more difficult to be oxidized, and the reversibility of electrode process became less with raising the content of PAEFC segment. The effects of the preparation method, the length of hydrophobic PAEFC segment, and the initial water content on self‐assembly behavior of PPEGMEA‐g‐PAEFC graft copolymers in aqueous media were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The morphologies of micelles could transform from cylinders to spheres or rods with changing the preparation condition and the length of side chains. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and n‐butyl methacrylate (n‐BMA) was initiated by a poly(ethylene oxide) chloro telechelic macroinitiator synthesized by esterification of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with 2‐chloro propionyl chloride. The polymerization, carried out in bulk at 90 °C and catalyzed by iron(II) chloride tetrahydrate in the presence of triphenylphosphine ligand (FeCl2 · 4H2O/PPh3), led to A–B–A amphiphilic triblock copolymers with MMA or n‐BMA as the A block and PEO as the B block. A kinetic study showed that the polymerization was first‐order with respect to the monomer concentration. Moreover, the experimental molecular weights of the block copolymers increased linearly with the monomer conversion, and the molecular weight distribution was acceptably narrow at the end of the reaction. These block copolymers turned out to be water‐soluble through the adjustment of the content of PEO blocks (PEO content >90% by mass). When the PEO content was small [monomer/macroinitiator molar ratio (M/I) = 300], the block copolymers were water‐insoluble and showed only one glass‐transition temperature. With an increase in the concentration of PEO (M/I = 100 or 50) in the copolymer, two glass transitions were detected, indicating phase separation. The macroinitiator and the corresponding triblock copolymers were characterized with Fourier transform infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, size exclusion chromatography analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of pH and the ligand nature over the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of the anionic monomer sodium 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropanesulfonate (AMPSNa) was investigated in aqueous medium by using ω‐halogenated poly(ethylene oxide) and CuBr, as macroinitiator and catalyst, respectively. The stability of both catalytic complexes and macroinitiator was investigated in function of pH, that is, fixed between 7.5 and 12. UV‐VIS spectroscopy confirmed a good catalytic complex stability in the studied conditions. Hydrolysis of the macroinitiator ester group at pH higher than 7.5 was detected by 1H NMR and GPC, yielding ill‐defined polymer samples when ATRP is performed in alkaline conditions. 2,2′‐Bipyridyl (Bpy), 1,1,4,7,10,10‐hexamethyltriethylenetetramine (HMTETA), and tris(2‐methylaminoethyl)amine (Me6‐TREN)‐based complexes were compared at the optimal pH (pH 7.5). When polymerization was carried out in the presence of CuBr · 2Me6‐TREN complex block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distribution (1.1 ≤ M W/M n ≤ 1.3), and good agreement between theoretical and experimental molar masses was obtained. Moreover, increasing the PAMPSNa polymerization degrees (n) did not affect the control over the polymerization. Preliminary characterization of the diblock copolymers behavior in aqueous medium revealed a strong polyelectrolyte effect independently of n. Interestingly, occurrence of interactions between the PEO and PAMPSNa‐blocks was also evidenced by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analyses. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Homopolymers of tbutyl acrylate (PtBuA) and a monosubstituted acrylamide (PAM) having an amino acid moiety in the side chain, N‐acryloyl‐(L )‐phenylalanine methyl ester 1 , have been synthesized by Reversible Addition‐Fragmentation Chain Transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Diblock copolymers of these homopolymers were also synthesized by chain extending PtBuA with monomer 1 and after modification, using simple acid deprotection chemistries of the acrylate block to afford a poly (acrylic acid) block, an optically active amphiphilic diblock copolymer was isolated. The optically active amphiphilic diblock copolymers, which contain chiral amino acid moieties within the hydrophobic segment, were then self‐assembled to afford spherical micelles which were subsequently crosslinked throughout the shell layer to afford robust chiral nanoparticles. The hydrodynamic diameters (Dh) of the block copolymer micelles and nanoparticles were measured by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and the dimensions of the nanoparticles were determined using tapping‐mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of polypeptide‐containing block copolymers combining N‐carboxyanhydride (NCA) ring‐opening polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was investigated. An amide initiator comprising an amine function for the NCA polymerization and an activated bromide for ATRP was used. Well‐defined polypeptide macroinitiators were obtained from γ‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate NCA, O‐benzyl‐serine NCA, and N‐benzyloxy‐L ‐lysine. Subsequent ATRP macroinitiation from the polypeptides resulted in higher than expected molecular weights. Analysis of the reaction products and model reactions confirmed that this is due to the high frequency of termination reactions by disproportionation in the initial phase of the ATRP, which is inherent in the amide initiator structure. In some cases selective precipitation could be applied to remove unreacted macroinitiator to yield well‐defined block copolymers. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Block copolymers of hyperbranched polyethylene (PE) and linear polystyrene (PS) or poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with hyperbranched PE macroinitiators. The PE macroinitiators were synthesized through a “living” polymerization of ethylene catalyzed with a Pd‐diimine catalyst and end‐capped with 4‐chloromethyl styrene as a chain quenching agent in one step. The macroinitiator and block copolymer samples were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, 1H and 13C NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry. The hyperbranched PE chains had narrow molecular weight distribution and contained a single terminal benzyl chloride per chain. Both hyperbranched PE and linear PS or PMMA blocks had well‐controlled molecular weights. Slow initiation was observed in ATRP because of steric effect of hyperbranched structures, resulting in slightly broad polydispersity index in the block copolymers. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Combination of coordination polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was applied to a novel synthesis of rod‐coil block copolymers. The procedure included the following steps: (1) monoesterification reaction of ethylene glycol with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide yielded a α‐bromo, ω‐hydroxy bifunctional initiator, (2) CpTiCl3 (bifunctional initiator) catalyst was prepared from a mixture of trichlorocyclopentadienyl titanium (CpTiCl3) and bifunctional initiator. Coordination polymerization of n‐butyl isocyanate initiated by such catalyst provided a well‐defined macroinitiator, poly(n‐butyl isocyanate)‐Br (PBIC‐Br), and (3) ATRP method of vinyl monomers using PBIC‐Br provided rod (PBIC)‐coil block copolymers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Living‐radical polymerization of acrylates were performed under emulsion atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) conditions using latexes prepared by a nanoprecipitation technique previously employed and optimized for the polymerization of styrene. A macroinitiator of poly(n‐butyl acrylate) prepared under bulk ATRP was dissolved in acetone and precipitated in an aqueous solution of Brij 98 to preform latex particles, which were then swollen with monomer and heated. Various monomers (i.e. n‐butyl acrylate, styrene, and tert‐butyl acrylate) were used to swell the particles to prepare homo‐ and block copolymers from the poly(n‐butyl acrylate) macroinitiator. Under these conditions latexes with a relatively good colloidal stability were obtained. Furthermore, amphiphilic block copolymers were prepared by hydrolysis of the tert‐butyl groups and the resulting block copolymers were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The bulk morphologies of the polystyrene‐b‐poly(n‐butyl acrylate) and poly(n‐butyl acrylate)‐b‐poly(acrylic acid) copolymers were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS). © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Herein, we report the synthesis of quantum dots (QDs)/polymer nanocomposites by reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in miniemulsions using a grafting from approach. First, the surfaces of CdS and CdSe QDs were functionalized using a chain transfer agent, a trisalkylphosphine oxide incorporating 4‐cyano‐4‐(thiobenzoylsulfanyl)pentanoic acid moieties. Using a free radical initiator (AIBN) to activate the RAFT process, a polystyrene (PS) block was grafted from the surface of the QDs. Quantum confinement effects were identified for the nanocomposite obtained, so attesting to the integrity of the QDs after the polymerization. Free PS chains were also present in the final nanocomposite, indicating that the RAFT polymerization from the surface of the QDs was accompanied by conventional free radical polymerization. After isolating the nanocomposite particles, a second poly(n‐butyl acrylate) block was tentatively grown from the initial PS block. The first results indicated a successful polymerization of the second polymer and show the potential of the current strategy to prepare block copolymers from the surface of the RAFT‐modified QDs. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
