We explore the influence of family on adolescent students' mathematical habitus by investigating the association between students' perceptions of parental influence and their dispositions towards mathematics. A construct measuring ‘perceived parental influence’ was validated using Rasch methodology on data from 563 Cypriot students on ‘core’ and ‘advanced’ mathematics pre-university courses, and was then used to predict students' dispositions towards future study of mathematically-demanding courses at university. In most of the regression models, perceived parental influence was not associated significantly with students' dispositions towards mathematics, when other variables were included in the models. However, further statistical analysis showed that perceived parental influence is mediated by (i) the mathematics course students are studying and (ii) their mathematical inclination. We suggest that family influences on students' dispositions are significantly accounted for by students' prior choice of mathematics course and the family's inculcation of their mathematical inclination; these are important factors influencing university choices.  相似文献

In Ireland, to encourage the study of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects and particularly mathematics, the Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science and Industry (MACSI) and Clongowes Wood College (County Kildare, Ireland) organized a mathematical modelling workshop for senior cycle secondary school students. Participants developed simple mathematical models for everyday life problems with an open-ended answer. The format and content of the workshop are described and feedback from both students and participating teachers is provided. For nearly all participants, this workshop was an enjoyable experience which showed mathematics and other STEM components in a very positive way.  相似文献

Promoting discussion and argumentation of mathematical ideas among students are aspects of the vision for communication in recent school mathematics reform efforts. Having rich mathematical discussions, however, can present a variety of classroom challenges. Many factors influence classroom discussions and need to be addressed in ways that will assist teachers in creating more inquiry-based mathematics classrooms. The study presented here examined the development of mathematical discussions in a fifth-grade classroom over the course of a school year. Various aspects of the participants' interactions, teacher's pedagogy, and the classroom microculture were investigated. One major result is the evolution of student participation from nonactive listening to active listening and use of others' ideas to develop new conjectures. These changes were paralleled by changes in the teacher's role in the classroom and the nature of her questions, in particular.  相似文献

This study adds to our understanding of science and mathematics teacher leadership in rural schools. Through In Vivo and Concept coding of teacher interviews, we investigated 20 secondary science and mathematics teachers' perceptions of rural teacher leadership during their participation in a three-year professional development program. As the teachers developed as teacher leaders, they broadened their focus from improving their own students' learning to sharing new knowledge learned through the program with other teachers both informally and formally. We compared our program components to the Teacher Leader Model Standards and added an emphasis on the importance of disciplinary content knowledge. We also identified patterns in science and mathematics teacher leadership that are contextually connected to teachers' instruction in rural high poverty schools. Rural teacher leadership included the importance of building strong teacher–student relationships, providing new academic opportunities for students, encouraging students' success, and building community connections.  相似文献

Proof and reasoning are central to learning mathematics with understanding. Yet proof is seen as challenging to teach and to learn. In a capstone course for preservice teachers, we developed instructional modules that guided prospective secondary mathematics teachers (PSTs) through a cycle of learning about the logical aspects of proof, then planning and implementing lessons in secondary classrooms that integrate these aspects with traditional mathematics curriculum in the United States. In this paper we highlight our framework on mathematical knowledge for teaching proof and focus on some of the logical aspects of proof that are seen as particularly challenging (four proof themes). We analyze 60 lesson plans, video recordings of a subset of 13 enacted lessons, and the PSTs’ self- reported data to shed light on how the PSTs planned and enacted lessons that integrate these proof themes. The results provide insights into successes and challenges the PSTs encountered in this process and illustrate potential pathways for preparing PSTs to enact reasoning and proof in secondary classrooms. We also highlight the design principles for supporting the development of PSTs’ mathematical knowledge for teaching proof.  相似文献

We report on the survey responses of 51 students attending mathematics bridging courses at a major Australian university, investigating what mathematics, if any, these students had studied in the senior years of schooling and what factors affected their decisions about the level of mathematics chosen. Quantitative findings are augmented by qualitative responses to open-ended questions in the survey as well as excerpts from follow-up emails. The findings show that the major reasons for students taking lower levels of mathematics in senior year(s), or dropping mathematics, include finding enough time for non-mathematics subjects, confidence in mathematical capability, advice and maximizing potential ranking for university admission.  相似文献

While there were a few mathematical journals aimed at teachers and students as early as the 1840s, it was only in the late 19th century that they became more numerous in Europe. This article is based on the analysis of a corpus of European mathematical journals published between the 1860s and World War I, selected in the first place because they were aimed at high school teachers and high school or/and first two years university students, which are often referred to as “intermediate journals”. All these journals had focused on the teaching of mathematics and, as such, they were shaped by the educational context of the country in which they were published. However, leafing through theses journals, one is struck by the fact that the mathematics they published was in fact highly commensurable, and can see that they were the locus of transnational exchanges on mathematical knowledge. This article shows that several aspects of “internationalisation” were in fact at stake in mathematical journals for students: making knowledge from elsewhere available and of publicizing to the whole world the mathematics produced in one country; making people from different countries collaborate. Finally, it focuses on the effects of transnational exchanges between journals for teachers and students: what was the mathematical knowledge that was circulated through them, and in what respect was it different from that published in other mathematical journals?  相似文献

While many engineering educators have proposed changes to theway that mathematics is taught to engineers, the focus has oftenbeen on mathematical content knowledge. Work from the mathematicseducation community suggests that it may be beneficial to considera broader notion of mathematics: mathematical thinking. Schoenfeldidentifies five aspects of mathematical thinking: the mathematicscontent knowledge we want engineering students to learn as wellas problem-solving strategies, use of resources, attitudes andpractices. If we further consider the social and material resourcesavailable to students and the mathematical practices studentsengage in, we have a more complete understanding of the breadthof mathematics and mathematical thinking necessary for engineeringpractice. This article further discusses each of these aspectsof mathematical thinking and offers examples of mathematicalthinking practices based in the authors' previous empiricalstudies of engineering students' and practitioners' uses ofmathematics. The article also offers insights to inform theteaching of mathematics to engineering students.  相似文献

Mathematical discourse is often described as abstract and devoid of human presence, yet many school curricula espouse an aim to develop active, creative mathematical problem posers and solvers. The project The Evolution of the Discourse of School Mathematics(EDSM) developed an analytic scheme to investigate the nature of school mathematics discourse through the lens of high-stakes examinations in England. Following an overview of the scheme, this article ‘zooms in’ on the development of the sub-component addressing the question of how the origin of mathematical knowledge is construed, allowing investigation of the potential for students to see a role for themselves as active, creative agents in mathematical practices. Analytical tools operationalising this component are presented and their application illustrated. Results of analysis of examinations over a period of three decades suggest some increase in human agency, though some other aspects characteristic of higher-level mathematics may have reduced.  相似文献

Undergraduate mathematics is traditionally designed and taught by content experts with little contribution from students. Indeed, there are signs that there is resistance from mathematics lecturers to involve students in the creation of material to support their peers – notwithstanding the fact that students have been successfully engaged as co-creators of material in other disciplines. There appears to be little research into what issues may lead to reservations to using student-created content in mathematics learning. This paper takes a case study approach to investigate the reasons for lecturers’ resistance to undergraduate student contributions to learning material, in particular with a view to the production of screencasts of mathematical explanations. It also investigates the views of students producing mathematical screencasts. This study is part of a larger research project investigating undergraduate involvement in mathematics module design. Four second-year students, who were producing mathematics screencasts as part of an internship, and five academics, were interviewed to gain an understanding of their views of the value of student screencasts. The interviews focused on the particular contributions students make to screencasts, outcomes for the students and level of lecturer acceptance of these resources. We argue that students benefit from creating screencasts for their peers by gaining deeper mathematical understanding, improved technological skills and developing other generic skills required of today's graduates. In contrast, we confirm lecturer resistance to using student-generated screencasts in their teaching materials. Lecturer reservations pertain to students’ lack of mathematical maturity and concerns over the mathematical integrity of the content that students produce. We conclude that close collaboration between students and lecturers during the design and production phases of screencasts may help lecturers overcome reservations, whilst preserving the benefits for students. In addition, we provide evidence that the process is a valuable professional development opportunity for the lecturers themselves.  相似文献

This paper explores Mechanical Engineering students’ conceptions of and preferences for conceptions of the derivative, and their views on mathematics. Data comes from pre-, post- and delayed post-tests, a preference test, interviews with students and an analysis of calculus courses. Data from Mathematics students is used to make comparisons with Mechanical Engineering students. The results show that Mechanical Engineering students’ conceptions of and preferences for the derivative develop in the direction of the rate of change aspects while those of Mathematics students develop in the direction of tangent aspects, and that Mechanical Engineering students view mathematics as a tool and want the application aspects in their course. Students’ developing conceptions, preferences and views with regard to teaching and departmental affiliation are considered and educational implications are suggested for the mathematical education of engineering students.  相似文献

This paper adopts a multimodal approach to the latest generation of digital mathematics textbooks (print and online) to investigate how the design, content, and features facilitate the construction of mathematical knowledge for teaching and learning purposes. The sequential organization of the print version is compared to the interactive format of the online version which foregrounds explanations and important mathematical content while simultaneously ensuring a high level of connectivity and coherence across hierarchical layers of mathematical knowledge. For example, mathematical content in the online version is linked to definitions, theorems, examples and exercises that can be viewed in the original context in which the material was presented, and the content can also be linked to mathematics software. Significantly, the development process for the new generation of mathematics textbooks involves using a ‘design neutral’ markup language so that the books are simultaneously published as both print books and online books. In this development process, the structure of the chapters, sections, and subsections with their various elements are explicitly marked-up in the master document and preserved in the output format, giving rise to new methodologies for large-scale analysis of mathematics textbooks and student use of these books. For example, tracking methodologies and interactive visualizations of student viewings of online mathematical textbooks are identified as new research directions for investigating how students engage with mathematics textbooks within and across different educational contexts.  相似文献

Gender and Mathematics: recent development from a Swedish perspective   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A fairly large study of attitudes towards mathematics among Swedish students at secondary level was conducted during 2001–2004. A newly developed instrument was used that was designed to capture gender stereotyped attitudes among students related to various aspects of mathematics in education and future life. The new scale and its development are described with reference to the original Australian studies. The scale builds on the Fennema–Sherman attitude scale “Mathematics as a male domain” but allows mathematics to be viewed as female, male or gender neutral, reflecting a different societal and educational situation than in the seventies when attitudes towards mathematics as a male domain were first investigated. The Swedish study shows that mathematics is perceived as gendered, mostly as a male domain, by large minorities of students at secondary level. However, the results are complex, with clear differences in responses from female and male students. Furthermore, mathematics is also viewed as female in some aspects. A comparison with Australian data shows that Swedish students are less inclined to view mathematics as a female domain than Australian students of the same age. The relevance of the study is related to the lack of equity in mathematics in education and as a professional field in the Swedish society, documented by earlier research.  相似文献

The problem of “defining” mathematics education as a proper scientific discipline has been discussed controversely for more than 20 years now. The paper tries to clarify some important aspects especially for answering the question of what makes mathematics education a specific scientific discipline and a field of research. With this aim in mind the following two dimensions are investigated: On the one hand, one has to be aware that mathematics is not “per se” the object of research in mathematics education, but that mathematical knowledge always has to be regarded as being “situated” within a social context. This means that mathematical knowledge only gains its specific epistemological meaning within a social context and that the development and understanding of mathematical knowledge is strongly influenced by the social context. On the other hand the specificity of the theory-practice-problem poses an essential demand on the scientific work in mathematics education.  相似文献
