Summary As(III), As(V) and organic arsenic in water are determined by differential pulse polarography. As (III) is directly determined in 2M HCl as supporting electrolyte. Total inorganic arsenic [As (III) + As(V)] is measured after reduction of electro-inactive As(V) with sodium sulphite. Total arsenic is determined after oxidative treatment of the water residue with potassium permanganate and magnesium nitrate, and reduction of arsenic with sodium sulphite. Organic arsenic is evaluated by difference. The efficiency of the whole procedure is 78–80% and its detection limit is 1g/l. The relative standard deviation is better than ±1.5% at 50g/l. Interferences due to heavy metals are overcome by removing them by anionexchange or pre-electrolysis with a mercury cathode.
Zusammenfassung As (III), As(V) und organisches Arsen in Wässern wurden differentialpuls-polarographisch bestimmt.

Despite the importance of accurately determining inorganic arsenic speciation in natural waters to predicting bioavailability and environmental and health impacts, there remains considerable debate about the most appropriate species preservation strategies to adopt. In particular, the high-iron, low-Eh (redox potential) shallow groundwaters in West Bengal, Bangladesh and SE Asia, the use of which for drinking and irrigation purposes has led to massive international concerns for human health, are particularly prone to changes in arsenic speciation after sampling. The effectiveness of HCl and EDTA preservation strategies has been compared and used on variably arsenic-rich West Bengali groundwater samples, analysed by ion chromatography–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (IC–ICP–MS). Immediate filtration and acidification with HCl followed by refrigerated storage was found to be the most effective strategy for minimizing the oxidation of inorganic As(III) during storage. The use of a PRP-X100 (Hamilton) column with a 20 mmol L–1 NH4H2PO4 as mobile phase enabled the separation of Cl from As(III), monomethylarsonic acid, dimethylarsinic acid and As(V), thereby eliminating any isobaric interference between 40Ar35Cl+ and 75As+. The use of EDTA as a preservative, whose action is impaired by the high calcium concentrations typical of these types of groundwater, resulted in marked oxidation during storage. The use of HCl is therefore indicated for analytical methods in which chloride-rich matrices are not problematical. The groundwaters analysed by IC–ICP–MS were found to contain between 5 and 770 ng As mL–1 exclusively as inorganic arsenic species. As(III)/total-As varied between 0 and 0.94.

A method was developed for the determination of arsenite [As(III)] and arsenate [As(V)] in water samples using flow injection online sorption coupled with hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS) using a cigarette filter as the sorbent. Selective determination of As(III) was achieved through online formation and retention of the pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate arsenic complex on the cigarette filter, but As(V) which did not form complexes was discarded. After reducing As(V) to As(III) using L-cysteine, total arsenic was determined by HG-AFS. The concentration of As(V) was calculated by the difference between As(III) and total arsenic. The analytes were eluted from the sorbent using 1.68 mol L?1 HCl. With consumption of 22 mL of the sample solution, the enrichment factor of As(III) was 25.6. The detection limits (3σ/k) and the relative standard deviation for 11 replicate determinations of 1.0 ng mL?1 As(III) were found to be 7.4 pg mL?1 and 2.6%, respectively.

A simple, fast and sensitive arsenic speciation method has been developed for environmental water analysis by using differential pulse cathodic stripping voltammetry (CSV) performed on a hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE). Electroactive As(III) is determined by direct CSV analysis. As(V) is converted to As(III) species first and is subsequently quantified by the concentration difference between total inorganic arsenic and As(III). A new batch-mode As(V) reduction procedure by l-cysteine was developed in this study. The optimized parameters for quantitative As(V) reduction include treatment with 20 mM l-cysteine and 0.03 M HCl for 6 min at 70 °C. Organic arsenic, including monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), can be decomposed to As(V) through UV photooxidation with peroxydisulfate and quantified through subtracting total inorganic arsenic from the total arsenic. At optimum condition, the detection limits for As(III), As(V), and organic arsenic (MMA and DMA) were all 0.3 μg/L and with the linear range from 2.5 to 190 μg/L. Interference from ions common in natural water (Mn, Fe, Cr, Cd, Ca, Zn, Mg, and phosphate) is minimal. The method was validated by analyzing the NIST 1640 natural water standard reference material and by recovery tests on spiked tap water and groundwater. When applied to on-site analysis of sediment pore water and stream water, the CSV results agree well with those obtained by inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP–MS) and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) methods.

Summary Analytical methods based on differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) have been described for the determination of total As, As(III), As(V), total Sb and Sb(III) as trace to minor constituents in complex glasses. For total As, the sample is decomposed with HF-H2SO4-KMnO4. The As(V) is chemically reduced to As (III) by hypophosphite and a DPV scan is carried out at the dropping mercury electrode from –0.2 to –0.7 Vvs. SCE (E p –0.41V). As(V) is determined by decomposing the sample in HF-H2SO4 and volatilizing the As(III) as AsF3. The chemical reduction of As(V) and the DPV scan are then applied. If the glass can be decomposed with cold HF, the As(III) present in the glass can be determined by applying the DPV scan after cold sample-dissolution. For Sb(III), the sample is decomposed with HF-H2SO4, diluted, and adjusted to 1M in HCl. A DPV scan is conducted from –0.03 to –0.5 V (E p –0.15 V). Sb(V) is not reduced in the 1M HCl supporting electrolyte. Total Sb is determined by using an aliquot of the sample solution adjusted to 6M in HCl. The DPV sweep is carried out from –0.5 to –0.1 V [E p for Sb(V) and Sb(III) is –0.30 V]. The methods have been applied to a wide range of glass compositions and the results compared with values obtained by spectrophotometry and coulometric titration.

In the present study, the extraction of the arsenic species arsenite (As(III)), arsenate (As(V)), monomethyarsonic (MMA) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) from airborne particulate filters was investigated and optimized. For this purpose, total suspended particulate matter as well as size fractionated aerosol samples were collected from the industrial area of Aspropyrgos, Greece, in glass fibre and polycarbonated filters, respectively. Among H3PO4 and HCl, tested in various concentrations, concentrated HCl was found to be the most effective extractant for arsenic from both polycarbonated and glass fibre filters, without provoking any arsenic species transformation. However, the quantitative extraction of arsenic species from glass fibre filters required the subsequent washing of the filters with ultrapure water after their leaching with concentrated HCl. The developed procedure was applied to airborne particulate filters for arsenic speciation in Aspropyrgos' atmosphere. The results showed an enrichment of As in the fine (PM2.5) compared with the coarse (PM10–2.5) fraction of airborne particulates, while As(V) was found to be the predominant arsenic species in all samples. Finally, As concentration in the PM10 fraction, for the investigated area and time period from December 2004 to June 2006, was below the target value of 6 ng As m− 3, referred in the Directive 2004/107 of European Union.

This paper describes a new voltammetric procedure for the inorganic speciation of As(III) and As(V) in water samples. The procedure is based on the chemical reduction of arsenate [As(V)] to arsenite [As(III)] followed by the voltammetric determination of total arsenic as As(III) at the hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE) by adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry (AdCSV) in the presence of sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate (SDDC). The reduction step involved the reaction with a mixture of Na2S2O5 and Na2S2O3 in the concentrations 2.5 and 0.5 mg mL?1, respectively, and the sample heating at 80 °C for 45 min. The linear range for the determination of total arsenic as As(III) in the presence of SDDC was between 5 and 150 μg L?1 for a deposition time of 60 s (r=0.992). A detection limit of 1.05 μg L?1 for total As was calculated for the method in water samples using a deposition time of 60 s. The detection limits of 4.2 μg L?1 and 15.0 μg L?1 for total As in seawater and dialysis concentrates, respectively, were calculated using a deposition time of 60 s. The relative standard deviations calculated were 2.5 and 4.0% for five measurements of 20 μg L?1 As(V) as As(III) in water and dialysis concentrates, respectively, after chemical reduction under optimized conditions. The method was applied for the determination of As(III) and total As in samples of dialysis water, mineral water, seawater and dialysis concentrates. Recovery values between 86.0 and 104.0% for As(III) and As(V) added to the samples prove the satisfactory accuracy and applicability of the procedure for the arsenic monitoring.

Determination of arsenic in the sub-ppb-range by differential pulse cathodic stripping voltammetry
Summary A method for the determination of traces of As(III) by differential pulse cathodic stripping voltammetry (DPCSV) is described. The hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE) is used as working electrode. Preelectrolysis is carried out in 1 N HCl in the presence of CuCl2 at a potential of –0.55 V (reference electrode: Ag/AgCl/KCl sat.). The product formed in the electrolysis is probably an intermetallic compound of the composition Cu3As. It is deposited on the mercury surface. Its redissolution by cathodic stripping on the basis of a further reduction of arsenic to As3– leads to a current signal at a potential between –0.77 V and –0.79 V. The dependence of peak height on concentration of arsenic shows linearity in the range of 0.2 to 20 ppb As. Interfering influences are also reported.

Arsenic (III), respectively arsenic(V) after the reduction were determined in model solutions and some inorganic and organic materials by fast scan differential pulse cathodic stripping voltammetry and by direct current cathodic stripping voltammetry with a rapid increase of potential. The accumulation on a hanging mercury drop electrode followed by cathodic stripping was carried out in 0.7–0.8M HCl or 1–2M H2SO4 solutions containing Cu(II)-ions. Detection limits calculated from regression parameters was determined to be under 1 ng/ml for the samples containing very low arsenic concentrations. The relative standard deviation did not reach 8% for arsenic contents about of 5 ng/ml.

Two advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), based on high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), namely, KMnO4/HCl/HIFU and H2O2/HCl/HIFU are studied and compared for the determination of toxic arsenic in human urine [As(III) + As(V) + MMA + DMA] by flow-injection hydride-generation atomic absorption spectrometry (FI-HG-AAS). The KMnO4/HCl/HIFU procedure was found to be adequate for organic matter degradation in human urine. l-cysteine (letra minuscula) was used for As reduction to the trivalent state. The new procedure was assessed with seven urines certified in different As species. Results revealed that with KMnO4/HCl/HIFU plus l-cysteine the toxic arsenic can be accurately measured in human urine whilst the H2O2/HCl/HIFU procedure underestimates toxic As. DMA and MMA degradation in urine were observed, due to the effects of the ultrasonic field. Recoveries for As(III), As(V), MMA and DMA were within the certified ranges. Arsenobetaine was not degraded by the AOPs. The new procedure adheres well to the principles of analytical minimalism: (i) low reagent consumption, (ii) low reagent concentration, (iii) low waste production and (iv) low amount of time required for sample preparation and analysis.

A sensitive, reliable, simple and rapid analytical method was developed for the determination of arsenite [As(III)], arsenate [As(V)] and arsenobetaine (AsB) species using ion chromatography combined with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (IC-ICP-MS). Inorganic and organic arsenic species were separated with an anion exchange column (Dionex AS9) and a 50 mM sodium bicarbonate mobile phase (pH 10) at a flow rate of 1.0 mL min?1. %RSD values were found to be lower than 5.1% for all arsenic species. The limits of detection (LOD) obtained for As(III), As(V) and AsB were 16.5 ng L?1, 14.1 ng L?1 and 6.2 ng L?1, respectively. The developed analytical method was tested using AsB certified reference material (NMIJ CRM 7901-a), and spring water certified reference material (UME CRM 1201) for accuracy check. This method was applied for the quantitative determination of arsenic species in different water samples and chicken samples as a solid matrix.

Ion-pair reverse-phase HPLC-inductively coupled plasma (ICP) MS was employed to determine arsenite [As(III)], dimethyl arsenic acid (DMA), monomethyl arsenic (MMA) and arsenate [As(V)] in Chinese brake fern (Pteris vittata L.). The separation was performed on a reverse-phase C18 column (Haisil 100) by using a mobile phase containing 10 mM hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as ion-pairing reagent, 20 mM ammonium phosphate buffer and 2% methanol at pH 6.0. The detection limits of arsenic species with HPLC-ICP-MS were 0.5, 0.4, 0.3 and 1.8 ppb of arsenic for As(III), DMA, MMA, and As(V), respectively. MMA has been shown for the first time to experimentally convert to DMA in the Chinese brake fern, indicating that Chinese brake fern can convert MMA to DMA by methylation.

A new, simple, and selective method has been presented for the separation and preconcentration of inorganic arsenic (As(III)/As(V)) and selenium (Se(IV)/Se(VI)) species by a microcolumn on-line coupled with inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Trace amounts of As(V) and Se(VI) species were separated and preconcentrated from total As and Se at desired pH values by a conical microcolumn packed with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-modified alkyl silica sorbent in the absence of chelating reagent. The species adsorbed by CTAB-modified alkyl silica sorbent were quantitatively desorbed with 0.10 ml of 1.0 mol l−1 HNO3. Total inorganic arsenic and selenium were similarly extracted after oxidation of As(III) and Se(IV) to As(V) and Se(VI) with KMnO4 (50.0 μmol l−1). The assay of As(III) and Se(IV) were based on subtracting As(V) and Se(VI) from total As and total Se, respectively. All parameters affecting the separation/preconcentration of As(V) and Se(VI) including pH, sample flow rate and volume, eluent solution and volume have been studied. With a sample volume of 3.0 ml, the sample throughput was 24 h−1 and the enrichment factors for As(V) and Se(VI) were 26.7 and 27.6, respectively. The limits of detection (LODs) were 0.15 μg l−1 for As(V) and 0.10 μg l−1 for Se(VI). The relative standard deviations (RSDs) for nine replicate determinations at 5.0 μg l−1 level of As(V) and Se(VI) were 4.0% and 3.6%, respectively. The calibration graphs of the method for As(V) and Se(VI) were linear in the range of 0.5–1000.0 μg l−1 with a correlation coefficient of 0.9936 and 0.9992, respectively. The developed method was successfully applied to the speciation analysis of inorganic arsenic and selenium in natural water samples with satisfactory results.

Ion-association complexes of antazoline HCl [I], hydralazine HCl [II], amiloride HCl [III] and quinine sulphate [IV] with [Co(SCN)4]2– and [Co(NO2)6]3– were precipitated and the excess unreacted cobalt complex was determined. A new method using atomic emission and atomic absorption spectrometry for the determination of the above drugs in pure solutions and pharmaceutical preparations is given. The drugs can be determined in the ranges 0.3–3.0, 0.19–1.96, 0.3–3.0, and 0.78–7.82 mg/25 ml solutions of I, II, III, and IV, respectively, with mean relative standard deviations of 0.65–2.03 % and recovery values of 95.76–101.2% indicating high precision and accuracy.

Arsine trapping on resistively heated tungsten coil was investigated and an analytical method for ultratrace arsenic determination in environmental samples was established. Several chemical modifiers, including Re, Pt, Mo, Ta and Rh, were explored as permanent chemical modifiers for tungsten coil on-line trapping and Rh gave the best performance. Arsine was on-line trapped on Rh-coated tungsten coil at 640 °C, then released at 1930 °C and subsequently delivered to an atomic fluorescence spectrometer (AFS) by a mixture of Ar and H2 for measurement. In the medium of 2% (v/v) HCl and 3% (m/v) KBH4, arsine can be selectively generated from As(III). Total inorganic arsenic was determined after pre-reduction of As(V) to As(III) in 0.5% (m/v) thiourea-0.5% (m/v) ascorbic acid solution. The concentration of As(V) was calculated by difference between the total inorganic arsenic and As(III), and inorganic arsenic speciation was thus achieved. With 8 min on-line trapping, the limit of detection was 10 ng L−1 for As(III) and 9 ng L−1 for total As; and the precision was found to be <5% R.S.D. (n = 7) for 0.2 ng mL−1 As. The proposed method was successfully applied in total arsenic determination of several standard reference materials and inorganic arsenic speciation analysis of nature water samples.

In this work, dual‐column capillary microextraction (CME) system consisting of N‐(2‐aminoethyl)‐3‐aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (AAPTS)‐silica coated capillary (C1) and 3‐mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane (MPTS)‐silica coated capillary (C2) was developed for sequential separation/preconcentration of arsenite [As(III)], arsenate [As(V)], monomethylarsonic acid [MMA(V)] and dimethylarsinic acid [DMA(V)] in the extracts of human hair followed by electrothermal vaporization inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ETV‐ICP‐MS) detection with iridium as permanent modifier. Various experimental parameters affecting the dual‐column microextraction of different As species had been investigated in detail. It was found that at pH 9, As(V) and MMA could be quantitatively retained by C1 and only As(III) could be quantitatively retained by C2. With the aid of valve switching, As(V)/MMA(V) retained on C1 and As(III) retained on C2 could be sequentially desorbed by 10 µl of 0.01 mol l?1 HNO3 [for As(V)], 0.1 mol l?1 HNO3 [for MMA(V)] and 0.2 mol l?1 HNO3‐3% thiourea (m/v) [for As(III)], respectively, the eluents were immediately introduced into the Ir‐coated graphite tubes for further ETV‐ICP‐MS detection. With two‐step ETV pyrolysis program, Cl? in the sample matrix could be in situ removed, and the total As in the human hair extracts or digested solution could be interference‐free, determined by ETV‐ICP‐MS. DMA(V) in the human hair extracts was obtained by subtraction of total As in the human hair extracts from other three As species. Under the optimized conditions, the detection limits (3 σ) of the method were 3.9 pg ml?1 for As(III), 2.7 pg ml?1 for As(V), 2.6 pg ml?1 for MMA(V) and 124 pg ml?1 for total As with the relative standard deviations less than 7.0% (C = 0.1 ng ml?1, n = 7), and the enrichment factor was 286, 262 and 260 for As(III), As(V) and MMA(V), respectively. The developed method was successfully applied for the speciation of arsenic in the extracts of human hair. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometric (ICP-AES) method was developed for speciation and simultaneous determination of Cr and As, since these two analytes are commonly determined in various water samples in order to assess their toxicity. The objective of this research was to study the speciation of Cr(III), Cr(VI) in the presence of As(III) and/or As(V) using solid phase extraction (SPE) and ICP-AES. For these measurements, four spectral lines were used for each analyte with the purpose of selecting the most appropriate for each element. Finally with the use for first time of a cation-exchange column filled with benzosulfonic acid and elution with HCl, the speciation in solutions which contained [Cr(III)?+?Cr(VI)?+?As(V)] and [Cr(III)?+?Cr(VI)?+?As(III)] was examined. It was demonstrated that the separation of the two chromium species is almost quantitative and the simultaneous determination of chromium species and total arsenic analytes is possible, with very good performance characteristics. The estimated limits of detection for Cr(III), Cr(VI), As(III) and/or As(V) were 0.9?µg?L?1, 1.1 µg?L?1, 4.7 µg?L?1 and 4.5 µg?L?1 respectively, the calculated relative standard deviations (RSDs) were 3.8%, 4.1%, 5.2% and 5.1% respectively, and finally the accuracy of the methods was estimated using a certified aqueous reference material and found to be 5.6% and 4.8% for Cr(III) and Cr(VI) respectively. The method was applied to the routine analysis of various water samples.

Arsenic compounds including arsenous acid (As(III)), arsenic acid (As(V)), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) and monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) were separated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). A Hamilton PRX-100 anionic-exchange column and a pH 8.5 K2HPO4/KH2PO4 5.0 × 10−3 mol L−1 mobile phase were used to achieve arsenic speciation. The separation of arsenic species provided peaks of As(III) at 2.75 min, DMA at 3.33 min, MMA at 5.17 min and As(V) at 12.5 min. The detection limits, defined as three times the standard deviation of the lowest standard measurements, were found to be 0.2, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5 ng mL−1 for As(III), DMA, MMA and As(V), respectively. The relative standard deviation values for a solution containing 5.0 μg L−1 of As(III), DMA, MMA and As(V) were 1.2, 2.1, 2.5 and 3.0%, respectively. This analytical procedure was applied to the speciation of arsenic compounds in drinking (soft drink, beer, juice) samples. The validation of the procedure was achieved through the analysis of arsenic compounds in water and sediment certified reference materials.

A simple and robust on-line sequential insertion system coupled with hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (HG-AAS) was developed, for selective As(III) and total inorganic arsenic determination without pre-reduction step. The proposed manifold, which is employing an integrated reaction chamber/gas-liquid separator (RC-GLS), is characterized by the ability of the successful managing of variable sample volumes (up to 25 ml), in order to achieve high sensitivity. Arsine is able to be selectively generated either from inorganic As(III) or from total arsenic, using different concentrations of HCl and NaBH4 solutions. For 8 ml sample volume consumption, the sampling frequency is 40 h−1. The detection limit is cL = 0.1 and 0.06 μg l−1 for As(III) and total arsenic, respectively. The precision (relative standard deviation) at 2.0 μg l−1 (n = 10) level is sr = 2.9 and 3.1% for As(III) and total arsenic, respectively. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated by analyzing the certified reference material NIST CRM 1643d and spiked water samples with various concentration ratios of As(III) to As(V). The method was applied for arsenic speciation in natural waters samples.
