This paper describes a direct numerical simulation (DNS) study of turbulent flow over a rectangular trailing edge at a Reynolds number of 1000, based on the freestream quantities and the trailing edge thickness h; the incoming boundary layer displacement thickness δ* is approximately equal to h. The time-dependent inflow boundary condition is provided by a separate turbulent boundary layer simulation which is in good agreement with existing computational and experimental data. The turbulent trailing edge flow simulation is carried out using a parallel multi-block code based on finite difference methods and using a multi-grid Poisson solver. The turbulent flow in the near-wake region of the trailing edge has been studied first for the effects of domain size and grid resolution. Then two simulations with a total of 256 × 512 × 64 (∼ 8.4×106) and 512 × 1024 × 128 (∼ 6.7×107) grid points in the computational domain are carried out to investigate the key flow features. Visualization of the instantaneous flow field is used to investigate the complex fluid dynamics taking place in the near-wake region; of particular importance is the interaction between the large-scale spanwise, or Kármán, vortices and the small-scale quasi-streamwise vortices contained within the inflow boundary layer. Comparisons of turbulence statistics including the mean flow quantities are presented, as well as the pressure distributions over the trailing edge. A spectral analysis applied to the force coefficient in the wall normal direction shows that the main shedding frequency is characterized by a Strouhal number based on h of approximately 0.118. Finally, the turbulence kinetic energy budget is analysed. Received 4 March 1999 and accepted 27 October 2000  相似文献

A numerical simulation of a plane turbulent wake at a very low Reynolds number has been performed using finite volume methods. The wake was produced by allowing two turbulent boundary layers, simulated separately in advance, to interact downstream of the trailing edge of a thin flat plate. A number of innovative numerical techniques were required in the simulation, such as the provision of fully turbulent time-dependent inflow data from a separate simulation, advective outflow boundary conditions and the approximate representation of an internal solid surface by a method which is computationally efficient. The resulting simulation successfully reproduced many of the statistical properties of the turbulent near-wake flow at low Reynolds number.

The Reynolds-averaged flow for a solid/free-surface juncture boundary layer and wake is documented. The three mean-velocity components and five of the Reynolds stresses are measured for a surface-piercing flat plate in a towing tank using a laser-Doppler velocimeter system for both boundary-layer and wake planes in regions close to the free surface. The experimental method is described, including the foil-plate model, laser-Doppler velocimeter system, conditions, and uncertainty analysis. The underlying flow data is in excellent agreement with benchmark data. Inner (near the plate and wake centerplane and below the free surface) and outer (near the free surface) regions of high streamwise vorticity of opposite sign are observed, which transport, respectively, high mean velocity and low turbulence from the outer to the inner and low mean velocity and high turbulence from the inner to the outer portions of the boundary layer and wake. For the wake, the inner region of vorticity is relatively weak. The physical mechanism for the streamwise vorticity is analyzed with regard to the Reynolds-averaged streamwise vorticity equation. The anisotropy of the crossplane normal Reynolds stresses closely correlates with the vorticity and, additionally, indicates similarity, i.e., its nature is such that it only depends on the proximity to the plate and free surface boundaries or wake centerplane symmetry plane. Free-surface effects on the Reynolds stresses are analyzed with regard to the behavior close to the free surface of the turbulent kinetic energy and the normal components of the anisotropy tensor and the anisotropy invariants. Close to the free surface, the turbulent kinetic energy is nearly constant and increases for the inner and outer portions, respectively, of the boundary layer and wake and the normal components of the anisotropy tensor and the anisotropy invariants roughly correspond to the limiting values for two-component turbulence. The similarities and differences between the present results and analysis with those from related studies are discussed. The data and analysis should have practical application with regard to the development of turbulence models for computational fluid dynamics methods for the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations. The averaged layered turbulent wall flows of an incompressible fluid are considered for an arbitrary wall roughness and a friction coefficient tending to zero. It is assumed that in the asymptotic limit the flow may be divided into two regions: an outer, only slightly disturbed region, and a thin wall region. A similarity law for the velocity disturbances in the outer region is established for cylindrical tubes with an arbitrary cross section. Using the asymptotically matched solutions in the inner and outer regions, the existence of a logarithmic velocity profile in the matching zone is proved. On the basis of a unique asymptotic approach, the existing semi-empirical solutions for tube flows are brought into consistency. A number of semi-empirical formulas for the velocity profiles, which refine and expand the range of applicability of existing relations, are proposed.

We consider a laminar boundary layer for which the stagnation enthalpy specified in the initial section is variable with height. Such problems arise, for example, for bodies located in the wake behind another body, for hypersonic flow past slender blunted bodies (as a result of the large transverse entropy gradients in the highentropy layer), for stepwise variation of the temperature of a surface on which there is an already developed boundary layer, for sudden expansion of the boundary layer as a result of its flow past a corner of the surface, etc.Strictly, we should in such cases solve the boundary layer equations (if the longitudinal gradients are much smaller than the transverse) with the specified initial distribution of the quantities. However, from the physical point of view, the distributed region may be broken down into two regions, the near-wall boundary layer and an outer region which is a gas flow with constant velocity and the specified initial temperature profile, whose calculation yields the edge conditions for the boundary layer. The boundary between the regions is determined from the condition of adequately smooth matching of the solutions. This approach is much preferable to the first, since it permits avoiding (within the framework of boundary layer theory) the difficulties associated with the presence of a possible singularity at the initial point of the surface due to the discontinuity of the boundary conditions at this point, and also permits using conventional boundary layer theory if the effect of the viscosity in the outer region is not significant. However, this partition requires additional justifications of the possibility of independent determination of the solution in the outer region and the determination of the edge of the boundary layer, considered as the region of influence of the wetted surface. The boundary layer in a nonuniform flow has been considered in several works for a linear initial velocity or temperature profile [1–3].It should be noted that the linear initial enthalpy or velocity profiles for constant gas properties do not undergo changes under the influence of viscosity or thermal conductivity. Thus the fundamental characteristic features noted above which are associated with the presence of the two regions and their interaction in essence cannot be investigated using these examples. In this study we obtain and analyze the exact solutions of the equations of the compressible boundary layer for a power-law variation of the initial stagnation enthalpy profile as a function of the stream function for a constant initial velocity. Here it is shown that the influence of the boundary conditions at the wall are actually localized in the near-wall boundary layer, which is similar in dimensions to the conventional velocity or thermal boundary layers. In the region which is external with relation to this layer, in accordance with the physical picture described above, the solution coincides with the solution of the Cauchy problem for the heat conduction equation, which describes the development of the initial temperature profile in an infinite steady-state flow with constant velocity. It is shown that for the sufficiently smooth initial profiles which are of interest in practice the outer flow undergoes practically no changes until we reach the inner boundary layer, and it may be calculated using the perfect gas laws.

Experimental measurements address the effects on a turbulent boundary layer of wall roughness on a flat plate and a ramp that produces a separation bubble over the ramp trailing edge. A fully rough flow condition is achieved on the upstream flat plate. The main effect of the wall roughness on the outer layer turbulence on a flat plate is to change the friction velocity. The separation region is substantially larger for the rough-wall case. The rough-wall boundary layer turbulence is less sensitive to the onset of an adverse pressure gradient over the ramp, producing substantially smaller Reynolds stress peaks in upstream flat-plate, wall-unit coordinates.

The near and very near wake of a flat plate with a circular trailing edge is investigated with data from direct numerical simulations. Computations were performed for four different Reynolds numbers based on plate thickness (D) and at constant plate length. The value of θ/D varies by a factor of approximately 20 in the computations (θ being the boundary layer momentum thickness at the trailing edge). The separating boundary layers are turbulent in all the cases. One objective of the study is to understand the changes in wake characteristics with changing θ/D (as obtained by decreasing D). Vortex shedding is vigorous in the low θ/D cases with a substantial decrease in shedding intensity in the largest θ/D case (for all practical purposes shedding becomes almost intermittent). Other characteristics that are significantly altered with increasing θ/D are the roll-up of the detached shear layers and the magnitude of fluctuations in shedding period. These effects are explored in depth. The effects of changing θ/D on the distributions of the time-averaged, near-wake velocity statistics are discussed.

A stereoscopic PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) technique was used to measure the three-dimensional flow structure of the turbulent wake behind a marine propeller with five blades. The out-of-plane velocity component was determined using two CCD cameras with an angular displacement configuration. Four hundred instantaneous velocity fields were measured for each of four different blade phases, and ensemble averaged in order to find the spatial evolution of the propeller wake in the region from the trailing edge up to one propeller diameter (D) downstream. The influence of propeller loading conditions on the wake structure was also investigated by measuring the velocity fields at three advance ratios (J=0.59, 0.72 and 0.88). The phase-averaged velocity fields revealed that a viscous wake formed by the boundary layers developed along the blade surfaces. Tip vortices were generated periodically and the slipstream contracted in the near-wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component and strain rate had large values at the locations of the tip and trailing vortices. As the flow moved downstream, the turbulence intensity, the strength of the tip vortices, and the magnitude of the out-of-plane velocity component at trailing vortices all decreased due to effects such as viscous dissipation, turbulence diffusion, and blade-to-blade interaction.

The mixing layer between non-parallel streams
Compared to the classical two-dimensional plane mixing layer, the mixing layer between non-parallel streams has an additional degree of freedom: the angle between the streams and the direction perpendicular to the trailing edge. Consequently the mean vorticity vector, which depends on these angles, is no longer by necessity parallel to the trailing edge of the flow. The ensuing coherent structures are generally helices with components normal to the trailing edge. They can be controlled by different mechanisms, depending on the velocity vectors.

Turbulence measurements are reported on the three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer along the centerline of the flat endwall in a 30° bend. Profiles of mean velocities and Reynolds stresses were obtained down to y +≈2 for the mean flow and y +≈8 for the turbulent stresses. Mean velocity data collapsed well on a simple law-of-the-wall based on the magnitude of the resultant velocity. The turbulence intensity and turbulent shear stress magnitude both increased with increased three-dimensionality. The ratio of these two quantities, the a 1 structure parameter, decreased in the central regions of the boundary layer and showed profile similarity for y +<50. The shear stress vector angle lagged behind the velocity gradient vector angle in the outer region of the boundary layer, however there was an indication that the shear stress vector tends to lead the velocity gradient vector close to the wall. The unsteady lift generated by turbulence at the trailing edge of an airfoil is a source of radiated sound. The objective of the present research was to measure the velocity field in the near wake region of an asymmetric beveled trailing edge in order to determine the flow mechanisms responsible for the generation of trailing edge noise. Two component velocity measurements were acquired using particle image velocimetry. The chord Reynolds number was 1.9 × 106. The data show velocity field realizations that were typical of a wake flow containing an asymmetric periodic vortex shedding. A phase average decomposition of the velocity field with respect to this shedding process was utilized to separate the large scale turbulent motions that occurred at the vortex shedding frequency (i.e., those responsible for the production of tonal noise) from the smaller scale turbulent motions, which were interpreted to be responsible for the production of broadband sound. The small scale turbulence was found to be dependent on the phase of the vortex shedding process implying a dependence of the broadband sound generated by the trailing edge on the phase of the vortex shedding process.

In this study the effects of induced jet at trailing edge of a two dimensional airfoil on its boundary layer shape, separation over surface and turbulent parameters behind trailing edge are numerically investigated and compared against a previous experimental data. After proving independency of results from mesh size and obtaining the required mesh size, different turbulent models are examined and RNG k-epsilon model is chosen because of good agreement with experimental data in velocity and turbulent intensity variations. A comparison between ordinary and jet induced cases, regarding numerical data, is made. The results showed that because of low number of measurement points in experimental study, turbulent intensity extremes are not captured. While in numerical study, these values and their positions are well calculated and exact variation of turbulent intensity is acquired. Also a study in effect of jet at high angles of attack is done and the results showed the ability of jet in controlling separation and reducing wake region.

For two-dimensional diffraction by a crack in an elastic solid it is shown that the geometrical theory of diffraction represents an asymptotic solution to the equations of linear elastodynamics, which satisfies the boundary conditions of vanishing tractions on the crack faces. The analysis consists of matching an outer solution valid far from the edge of the crack to an inner solution valid near the crack edge. The outer solution fails on the boundary of the region containing direct rays, as well as on the boundaries of the regions containing reflected rays of longitudinal and transverse motion. Uniform corrections to the theory are given which provide a smooth transition across these boundaries.
