There has been no reliable published data on the presence of perchlorate in seawater. Seaweeds are among the most important plant life in the ocean and are good sources of iodine and have been widely used as food and nutritional supplement. Perchlorate is known to inhibit the transport of iodide by the sodium iodide symporter (NIS), present e.g., in the thyroid and mammary glands. With perchlorate being increasingly detected in drinking water, milk and various other foods, increasing the iodide intake through inexpensive natural supplements may be an attractive solution for maintaining iodine assimilation. We report here measurable concentrations of perchlorate in several samples of seawater (detectable in about half the samples analyzed). We also report the iodide and perchlorate concentrations of 11 different species of seaweed and the corresponding bioconcentration factors (BCF) for perchlorate and iodide, relative to the seawater from which they were harvested. All seaweed samples came from the same region, off the coast of Northeastern Maine. Concentrations of iodide and perchlorate in four seawater samples collected from the region near harvest time were 30 ± 11 and 0.16 ± 0.084 μg l−1, respectively. Concentrations of both iodide and perchlorate varied over a wide range for different seaweed species; iodide ranging from 16 to 3134 mg kg−1 and perchlorate from 0.077 to 3.2 mg kg−1. The Laminaria species had the highest iodide concentration; Laminaria digitata is the seaweed species most commonly used in the kelp tablets sold in health food stores. Our sample of L. digitata contained 3134 ± 15 mg iodide/kg dry weight. The BCF varied widely for different species, with Laminaria species concentrating iodide preferentially over perchlorate. The iodide BCF (BCFi) to perchlorate BCF (BCFp) quotient ranged from 0.66 to 53; L. digitata and L. saccarina having a BCFi/BCFp value of 45 and 53, respectively, far greater than a simple anion exchange process will allow. Although most seaweed samples contain some amount of perchlorate, the great majority contains iodide in so much higher amount that at least for the commonly used Laminaria species, the iodide/perchlorate ratio is greater than the square of the perchlorate to iodide selectivity factor reported for the mammalian NIS and should thus lead to net beneficial iodine nutrition even in a two-stage mother-infant scenario.  相似文献

Seaweeds are being used as food items in Asian countries from ancient times. Seaweeds mainly grow in intertidal zone and survive extreme environmental conditions and thus have developed metabolites, which help them survive in such conditions. Red seaweeds have proven to be rich in compounds, which are antioxidant and having many other health benefits. In this study, seven most abundantly grown red seaweeds, Gracilaria corticata (GC), Grateloupia indica (GI), Kappaphycus alvarezii (KA), Solieria robusta (SR), Amphiroa anceps (AA), Halymenia porphyriformis (HP), and Sarconema scinaioides (SS) were collected from Saurashtra coast of Arabian Sea. Harvested seaweeds were subjected to metabolite profiling, flavonoid and phenolic content analysis, different biological activities including radical scavenging, antioxidant, reducing and proliferation inhibition. Overall, GI was found to contain high contents (flavonoid and phenolic), biological activities and proliferation inhibition. Study confirms nutraceutical potential of red seaweed Grateloupia indica to be explored further for the bioactive compound or to be used as functional food.  相似文献

Recent increased interest in seaweed is motivated by attention generated in their bioactive components that have potential applications in the functional food and nutraceutical industries. In the present study, nutritional composition, metabolite profiles, phytochemical screening and physicochemical properties of freeze-dried brown seaweed, Sargassum polycystum were evaluated. Results showed that the S. polycystum had protein content of 8.65 ± 1.06%, lipid of 3.42 ± 0.01%, carbohydrate of 36.55 ± 1.09% and total dietary fibre content of 2.75 ± 0.58% on dry weight basis. The mineral content of S. polycystum including Na, K, Ca, Mg Fe, Se and Mn were 8876.45 ± 0.47, 1711.05 ± 0.07, 1079.75 ± 0.30, 213.85 ± 0.02, 277.6 ± 0.12, 4.70 ± 0.00 and 4.45 ± 0.00 mg 100/g DW, respectively. Total carotenoid, chlorophyll a and b content in S. polycystum were detected at 45.28 ± 1.77, 141.98 ± 1.18 and 111.29 µg/g respectively. The total amino acid content was 74.90 ± 1.45%. The study revealed various secondary metabolites and major constituents of S. polycystum fibre to include fucose, mannose, galactose, xylose and rhamnose. The metabolites extracted from the seaweeds comprised n-hexadecanoic acid, 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, mono(2-ethylhexyl) ester, benzenepropanoic acid, 3,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-hydroxy- methyl ester, 1-dodecanol, 3,7,11-trimethyl-, which were the most abundant. The physicochemical properties of S. polycystum such as water-holding and swelling capacity were comparable to several commercial fibre-rich products. In conclusion, results of this study indicate that S. polycystum is a potential candidate as functional food sources for human consumption and its cultivation needs to be encouraged.  相似文献

A method was developed and validated for the determination of total iodine in a wide variety of food products and dietary supplements. The method involves a unique sample digestion with a KOH solution in an oven or by using an open-vessel microwave system. After digestion, a stabilizer is added and the solution is taken to volume, then filtered and analyzed either directly or after dilution. The amount of iodine is determined with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The method was validated by experiments to determine its precision, accuracy, linearity, specificity, ruggedness, and robustness. The LOQ of this method is 25-50 microg/kg. The method demonstrated an average RSD of 2.27% during analysis of milk powder and 4.30% during analysis of a dietary supplement tablet reference material. The accuracy of the method as determined with these same reference materials was 100 and 94.2%, respectively. The method has been used successfully on commodity foods, processed foods, dairy products, pet food, infant formula, animal feed, mineral premixes, and a variety of dietary supplements.  相似文献

This work is part of an ongoing research study towards an understanding of the complete metabolism of arsenosugars in mammalian organisms when ingesting seaweed, using the North Ronaldsay (NR) sheep as a model organism. We focus on the analysis of only those arsenic species bound to the lipids of the feed (Laminaria digitata), faeces and the tissues of the NR sheep using a novel enzymatic hydrolytic method that is simple and reliable. This rare breed of sheep, found in the remote Orkney Islands in the north of Scotland, live the entire year on the beaches and eat seaweed that is washed ashore (up to 3 kg daily). Previous studies on arsenic fractionation in muscle, kidney and liver tissues revealed that most of the arsenic is concentrated in the fat fractions of these tissues (muscle fat: 61%; liver fat: 66%; kidney fat: 25%) rather than in the non‐lipid fractions. Hence, this study was undertaken in order to determine the arsenic species bound to lipids in the muscle, kidney and faeces of NR sheep and to compare these with the arsenic species bound to the lipids of the L. digitata consumed. The enzymatic hydrolytic procedure has been successfully employed for the first time to cleave the arsenic species cleanly from the rest of the lipid structure. This makes the arsenic species water soluble and enables their direct determination by high‐performance liquid chromatography coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Dimethylarsinic acid (DMA(V)) and monomethylarsonic acid (MA(V)) were found to be the major hydrolysed arsenic species bound to the kidney and muscle lipids, whereas arsenosugar‐1 was found to be the major hydrolysed arsenic species in L. digitata lipids. On the other hand, DMA(V) was found to be the major arsenical obtained after the enzymatic hydrolysis of the faeces lipids. These results seem to suggest that both direct absorption and biotransformation of the absorbed organoarsenicals are the likely reasons for their occurrence and accumulation in the NR sheep tissues. Knowledge of the composition and emission rates of iodine-containing volatiles from major widespread seaweed species is important for modeling the impact of halogens on gas-phase atmospheric chemistry, new particle formation, and climate. In this work, we present the application of mass spectrometric techniques for the quantification of short-lived iodine-containing volatiles emitted by eight different seaweeds from the intertidal zone of Helgoland, Germany. A previously developed online time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometric method was used to determine I2 emission rates and investigate temporally resolved emission profiles. Simultaneously, iodocarbons were preconcentrated on solid adsorbent tubes and quantified offline using thermodesorption–gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The total iodine content of the seaweeds was determined using microwave-assisted tetramethylammonium hydroxide extraction followed by inductively coupled-plasma mass spectrometry analysis. The highest total iodine content was found in the Laminariales, followed by the brown algae Ascophyllum nodosum, Fucus vesiculosus, Fucus serratus, and both red algae Chondrus crispus and Delesseria sanguinea. Laminariales were found to be the strongest I2 emitters. Time series of the iodine release of Laminaria digitata and Laminaria hyperborea showed a strong initial I2 emission when first exposed to air followed by an exponential decline of the release rate. For both species, I2 emission bursts were observed. For Laminaria saccharina und F. serratus, a more continuous I2 release profile was detected, however, F. serratus released much less I2. A. nodosum and F. vesiculosus showed a completely different emission behavior. The I2 emission rates of these species were slowly increasing with time during the first 1 to 2 h until a more or less stable I2 emission rate was reached. The lowest I2 emission rates were detected for the red algae C. crispus and D. sanguinea. Total iodocarbon emission rates showed almost the same general trend, however, the total iodocarbon emission rates were about one to two orders of magnitude lower than those of molecular iodine, demonstrating that I2 is the major iodine containing volatile released by the investigated seaweed species. In addition, a clear dependency of iodocarbon emission from the ozone level (0–150 ppb O3) was found for L. digitata.  相似文献

The “A-type” proanthocyanidins in cranberry fruit (Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait.) are bioactive components associated with prevention of urinary tract infections (UTI). Cranberry juice, fruit (fresh and dried), functional foods, and cranberry dietary supplements are promoted for prevention of UTI and for maintenance of urinary tract health (UTH), on the basis of their content of cranberry proanthocyanidins (c-PAC) with “A-type” interflavan bonds. With increasing consumer use of cranberries for maintenance of UTH and an expanding number of commercial cranberry products of different types, the availability of unified methods for measuring levels of c-PAC is important. This review discusses quantitative and qualitative analysis of c-PAC with “A-type” interflavan bonds in relation to their biological activity for UTI prevention. The integrity (including authenticity, standardization, efficacy, and safety) of cranberry fruit, juices, and dietary supplements may now be measured by using recent advances in mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography, production of c-PAC standards, and improved simple quantitative techniques.  相似文献

Highly diluted solutions of an alkaline treated pig bone gelatin and a seaweed alginate of Macrocystis pyrifera have been investigated by means of static light scattering at various temperatures. With these results the thermodynamic properties found by other authors and us before can be verified. Furthermore, diluted mixtures of both polymers with different ratios of composition have been investigated. These measurements show that both polymers in all mixtures behave quasi-binarily in the investigated temperature range. They maintain their association phenomena of the pure polymer solutions.  相似文献

Seaweed processing generates liquid fraction residual that could be used as a low-cost nutrient source for microbial production of metabolites. The Rhodotorula strain is able to produce antimicrobial compounds known as sophorolipids. Our aim was to evaluate sophorolipid production, with antibacterial activity, by marine Rhodotorula rubra using liquid fraction residual (LFR) from the brown seaweed Macrocystis pyrifera as the nutrient source. LFR having a composition of 32% w/w carbohydrate, 1% w/w lipids, 15% w/w protein and 52% w/w ash. The best culture condition for sophorolipid production was LFR 40% v/v, without yeast extract, artificial seawater 80% v/v at 15 °C by 3 growth days, with the antibacterial activity of 24.4 ± 3.1 % on Escherichia coli and 21.1 ± 3.8 % on Staphylococcus aureus. It was possible to identify mono-acetylated acidic and methyl ester acidic sophorolipid. These compounds possess potential as pathogen controllers for application in the food industry.  相似文献

Dietary supplements containing dried roots or extracts of the roots and/or rhizomes of blue cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides) are widely available. This botanical has a long history of use by Native Americans and its use continues to the present day. The primary constituents of blue cohosh are its alkaloids and saponins. The structures of the alkaloids magnoflorine, baptifoline, anagyrine, and N-methylcytisine have been known for many years. The last 10 years have seen a great increase in isolation and identification of the large number of saponins present in blue cohosh. Important developments in nuclear magnetic resonance techniques have contributed substantially to the increase in elucidation of the structures of the complex saponins. Several authors have described quantitative methods for both the alkaloids and saponins in blue cohosh. Such methods have made it possible to quantify these constituents in dietary supplements containing this botanical ingredient. Concentrations of both alkaloids and saponins vary substantially in dietary supplements of blue cohosh. The nicotinic alkaloid, N-methylcytisine, a potent toxicant, has been found in all dietary supplements of blue cohosh analyzed. The teratogenic alkaloid anagyrine has been found in some but not all dietary supplements.  相似文献

Red yeast rice has been used to produce alcoholic beverages and various fermented foods in China and Korea since ancient times; it has also been used to produce tofuyo (Okinawan-style fermented tofu) in Japan since the 18th century. Recently, monacolin K (lovastatin) which has cholesterol-lowering effects, was found in some strains of Monascus fungi. Since statins have been used world-wide as a cholesterol-lowering agent, processed foods containing natural statins are drawing attention as materials for primary prevention of life-style related diseases. In recent years, large-scale commercial production of red yeast rice using traditional solid-state fermentation has become possible, and various useful materials, including a variety of monascus pigments (polyketides) that spread as natural pigments, in addition to statins, are produced in the fermentation process. Red yeast rice has a lot of potential as a medicinal food. In this paper, we describe the history of red yeast rice as food, especially in Japan and East Asia, its production methods, use, and the ingredients with pharmacological activity. We then review evidence of the beneficial effects of red yeast rice in improving lipid metabolism and the circulatory system and its safety as a functional food.  相似文献

While metabolomics is increasingly used to investigate the food metabolome and identify new markers of food exposure, limited attention has been given to the validation of such markers. The main objectives of the present study were to (1) discover potential food exposure markers (PEMs) for a range of plant foods in a study setting with a mixed dietary background and (2) validate PEMs found in a previous meal study. Three-day weighed dietary records and 24-h urine samples were collected three times during a 6-month parallel intervention study from 107 subjects randomized to two distinct dietary patterns. An untargeted UPLC-qTOF-MS metabolomics analysis was performed on the urine samples, and all features detected underwent strict data analyses, including an iterative paired t test and sensitivity and specificity analyses for foods. A total of 22 unique PEMs were identified that covered 7 out of 40 investigated food groups (strawberry, cabbages, beetroot, walnut, citrus, green beans and chocolate). The PEMs reflected foods with a distinct composition rather than foods eaten more frequently or in larger amounts. We found that 23 % of the PEMs found in a previous meal study were also valid in the present intervention study. The study demonstrates that it is possible to discover and validate PEMs for several foods and food classes in an intervention study with a mixed dietary background, despite the large variability in such a dataset. Final validation of PEMs for intake of foods should be performed by quantitative analysis.

The search for new antioxidants of natural origin derived from plants and seaweeds is still very important at present. In our study, the acetone extract of A. nodosum was investigated for its potential use as a natural antioxidant, natural feed additive with antibacterial activity and as a tyrosinase inhibitor. This study could be useful in the context of improved utilization of the A. nodosum extract in the food and cosmetics industry, being not only economically advantageous but also environmentally friendly. Extracts showed antioxidant activity with application of different methodologies: 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrilhydracil DPPH· radicals scavenging (39 %, 4 mg of freeze-dried sample), β-carotene-linoleic acid antioxidant assay (11 %, 4 mg of freeze-dried sample), O2· radicals scavenging activity (IC50 0.43 mg mL−1), OH· radicals scavenging activity (IC50 1.55 mg mL−1), and iron chelation ability (IC50 0.56 mg mL−1). The extract showed considerable antibacterial activity being more effective against gram-positive bacteria (Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus) than against gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Enterococcus aerogenes). Results of tyrosinase assay for the acetone extract of Ascophyllum nodosum presented 65.6 % inhibition of tyrosinase activity at the IC50 value of 0.1 mg mL−1. The outcomes of our study support potential utilization of this brown seaweed as a source of natural antioxidants. Antioxidant activity of the studied seaweed can be apparently explained by the free radicals scavenging activity, particularly related to the mechanisms of O2· radicals scavenging activity, OH· radicals inactivation, and iron chelation ability.  相似文献

Yucca is one of the main sources of steroidal saponins, hence different extracts are commercialized for use as surfactant additives by beverage, animal feed, cosmetics or agricultural products. For a deeper understanding of the potential of the saponins that can be found in this genus, an exhaustive review of the structural characteristics, bioactivities and analytical methods that can be used with these compounds has been carried out, since there are no recent reviews on the matter. Thus, a total of 108 saponins from eight species of the genus Yucca have been described. Out of these, the bioactivity of 68 saponins derived from the isolation of Yucca or other genera has been evaluated. Regarding the evaluation and quality control of the saponins from this genus LC-MS technique is the most often used. Nevertheless, the development of methods for their routine analysis in commercial preparations are needed. Moreover, most of the studies found in the literature have been carried out on Y. schidigera extract, since is the most often used for commercial purposes. Only eight of the 50 species that belong to this genus have been studied, which clearly indicates that the identification of saponins present in Yucca genus is still an unresolved question.  相似文献

Scientific demonstrations of the beneficial effects of non-psychoactive cannabinoids on the human body have increased the interest in foods containing hemp components. This review systematizes the latest discoveries relating to the characteristics of cannabinoids from Cannabis sativa L. var. sativa, it also presents a characterization of the mentioned plant. In this review, we present data on the opportunities and limitations of cannabinoids in food production. This article systematizes the data on the legal aspects, mainly the limits of Δ9-THC in food, the most popular analytical techniques (LC-MS and GC-MS) applied to assay cannabinoids in finished products, and the available data on the stability of cannabinoids during heating, storage, and access to light and oxygen. This may constitute a major challenge to their common use in food processing, as well as the potential formation of undesirable degradation products. Hemp-containing foods have great potential to become commercially popular among functional foods, provided that our understanding of cannabinoid stability in different food matrices and cannabinoid interactions with particular food ingredients are expanded. There remains a need for more data on the effects of technological processes and storage on cannabinoid degradation.  相似文献

Fat-soluble vitamins (FSVs) include vitamin A, carotenoids, vitamins D, E, and K. New legislation is being introduced in many countries to reinforce regulatory compliance of declared concentrations of vitamins and other micronutrients in food products and dietary supplements. The levels of FSVs are likely to be more closely scrutinized due to their potential health risks associated with overdosing, in particular of vitamin D. However, a proviso of stricter regulatory compliance is that analytical methods must be fit-for-purpose, providing adequate accuracy and precision. Official methods have been published by organizations such as AOAC INTERNATIONAL, European Committee for Standardization, International Dairy Federation, U.S. Pharmacopeia, and International Organization for Standardization. The methods available for foods, dietary supplements, and vitamin premixes are evaluated in this review. In general, these methods show adequate precision for regulatory compliance; however, the field of application has not often been evaluated for a sufficiently large range of food matrixes. Gaps have been noted in the range of published official procedures, particularly for carotenoids and vitamin premixes. The potential of some recent developments in sample preparation and chromatographic techniques were evaluated to provide improved procedures for FSV analysis the future.  相似文献

Sargassum fusiforme, the common Chinese edible seaweeds, was investigated for total arsenic concentration by ICP-MS and for individual arsenic species by LC-ICP-MS. For this purpose, a microwave-assisted procedure was used for the extraction of arsenic species in freeze-dried seaweed and an analytical procedure for the sensitive and efficient speciation of the arsenic species As(III), dimethylarsinic acid, monomethyl arsonic acid, As(V), arsenobetaine and arsenocholine was optimized. Arsenic compounds were extracted from the seaweed with a methanol/water mixture; the extracts were evaporated to dryness, redissolved in water, and chromatographed on an anion exchange column. The arsenic species in Sargassum fusiforme are abundant. In some sample, the majority of arsenic compounds detected in the extracts were inorganic species, with a predominance of As (V). In addition, some significant amounts of unidentified arsenic compounds were also observed in the extracts.

Different types of edible seaweeds (Kombu, Wakame, Nori and Sea Lettuce) harvested in the Galician coast (Northwestern Spain) were analyzed for total arsenic quantification before and after being cooked following manufacturer's instructions. Furthermore, the total arsenic in the bioaccessible fraction obtained after simulating a human digestion by an in vitro process was determined in those raw and cooked seaweeds. The detection of the target element was performed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) which was equipped with a collision cell to avoid polyatomic interferences. Piperazine-NN-bis (2-ethane-sulfonic acid) disodium (PIPES) buffer solution at a pH of 7.0 and dialysis membranes of 10 kDa molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) were used for intestinal digestion. Accuracy of the method was assessed by analyzing a BCR-279 certified reference material. The accuracy of the in vitro procedures was established by a mass balance study for Nori and Sea Lettuce which led to good accuracy of the whole in vitro process, after statistical evaluation (95% confidence interval). Results showed that the effect of cooking seaweed causes the removal of the element into the cooking water. Dialyzability percentages found in raw seaweed samples were comparable to those found in cooked seaweed, except in the case of Sea Lettuce sample for which a lower dialyzability percentage was found when it was cooked.  相似文献
