Divergence points of self-similar measures satisfying the OSC

Recently, Barreira and Schmeling (2000) [1] and Chen and Xiong (1999) [2] have shown, that for self-similar measures satisfying the SSC the set of divergence points typically has the same Hausdorff dimension as the support K. It is natural to ask whether we obtain a similar result for self-similar measures satisfying the OSC. However, with only the OSC satisfied, we cannot do most of the work on a symbolic space and then transfer the results to the subsets of Rd, which makes things more difficult. In this paper, by the box-counting principle we show that the set of divergence points has still the same Hausdorff dimension as the support K for self-similar measures satisfying the OSC.     

Local regularity theorems for the stationary thermistor problem with oscillating degeneracy

In this paper we present some regularity results for solutions to the system −Δu=σ(u)²|∇φ|, div(σ(u)∇φ)=0 in the case where σ(u) is allowed to oscillate between 0 and a positive number as u→∞. In particular, we show that u is locally bounded if σ(u) is bounded below by a suitable exponential function.     

Computations of cohomology groups and nontrivial periodic solutions of Hamiltonian systems

By computing the E-critical groups at θ and infinity of the corresponding functional of Hamiltonian systems, we proved the existence of nontrivial periodic solutions for the systems which may be resonant at θ and infinity under some new conditions. Some results in the literature are extended and some new type of theorems are proved. The main tool is the E-Morse theory developed by Kryszewski and Szulkin.     

Mapping properties for oscillatory integrals in d-dimensions

For aj,bj?1, j=1,2,…,d, we prove that the operator maps into itself for , where , and k(x,y)=φ(x,y)eig(x,y), φ(x,y) satisfies (1.2) (e.g. φ(x,y)=|x−y|^iτ,τ real) and the phase g(x,y)=xa⋅yb. We study operators with more general phases and for these operators we require that aj,bj>1, j=1,2,…,d, or al=bl?1 for some l∈{1,2,…,d}.

A counterexample to Wood's conjecture

We prove that if the one-point compactification of a locally compact, noncompact Hausdorff space L is the topological space called pseudoarc, then C₀(L,C) is almost transitive. We also obtain two necessary conditions on a metrizable locally compact Hausdorff space L for C₀(L) being almost transitive.     

Best simultaneous approximations, asymptotically nonexpansive mappings and variational inequalities in Banach spaces

The existence of common fixed points is established for three mappings where T is either generalized (f,g)-nonexpansive or asymptotically (f,g)-nonexpansive on a nonempty subset of a Banach space. As applications, the invariant best simultaneous approximation results are proved and the existence of solution of variational inequalities is obtained. Our results unify and substantially improve several recent results existing in the current literature.

On certain spaces of vector measures of bounded variation

If (Σ,X) is a measurable space and X a Banach space we investigate the X-inheritance of copies of ?_∞ in certain subspaces Δ(Σ,X) of bvca(Σ,X), the Banach space of all X-valued countable additive measures of bounded variation equipped with the variation norm. Among the consequences of our main theorem we get a theorem of J. Mendoza on the X-inheritance of copies of ?_∞ in the Bochner space L₁(μ,X) and other of the author on the X-inheritance of copies of ?_∞ in bvca(Σ,X).     

Property (w) and perturbations II

This note is a continuation of a previous article [P. Aiena, M.T. Biondi, Property (w) and perturbations, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 336 (2007) 683-692] concerning the stability of property (w), a variant of Weyl's theorem, for a bounded operator T acting on a Banach space, under finite-dimensional perturbations K commuting with T. A counterexample shows that property (w) in general is not preserved under finite-dimensional perturbations commuting with T, also under the assumption that T is a-isoloid.     

Estimates of the dilatation function of Beurling-Ahlfors extension

In this paper we estimate the dilatation function of the Beurling-Ahlfors extension in the most general case. By introducing ?h,m-function, we obtain an inequality which is sharp up to a constant.     

Analysis on Besov spaces II: Embedding and duality theorems

This paper gives several results on Besov spaces of holomorphic functions on a very large class of domains D in Cn. They include duality theorem, embedding theorem, best growth estimate, and boundedness of multiplication operators on Besov spaces.     

Dirichlet and VMOA domains via Schwarzian derivative

Short proofs of the following results concerning a bounded conformal map g of the unit disc D are presented: (1) logg^′ belongs to the Dirichlet space if and only if the Schwarzian derivative Sg of g satisfies Sg(z)(1−²|z|)∈L²(D); (2) logg^′∈VMOA if and only if ²|Sg(z)|³(1−²|z|) is a vanishing Carleson measure on D. Analogous results for Besov and Qp,0 spaces are also given.     

Variations on Weyl's theorem

In this note we study the property (w), a variant of Weyl's theorem introduced by Rako?evi?, by means of the localized single-valued extension property (SVEP). We establish for a bounded linear operator defined on a Banach space several sufficient and necessary conditions for which property (w) holds. We also relate this property with Weyl's theorem and with another variant of it, a-Weyl's theorem. We show that Weyl's theorem, a-Weyl's theorem and property (w) for T (respectively T^*) coincide whenever T^* (respectively T) satisfies SVEP. As a consequence of these results, we obtain that several classes of commonly considered operators have property (w).     

Fixed point theorems for better admissible multimaps on almost convex sets

We obtain new fixed point theorems on multimaps in the class Bp defined on almost convex subsets of topological vector spaces. Our main results are applied to deduce various fixed point theorems, coincidence theorems, almost fixed point theorems, intersection theorems, and minimax theorems. Consequently, our new results generalize well-known works of Kakutani, Fan, Browder, Himmelberg, Lassonde, and others.     

Large time behavior of anisotropic electromagnetic/elasticity equations in exterior domains

We find uniform rates of decay of the total energy of the coupled system of anisotropic electromagnetic/elasticity model in exterior domains provided mild dissipative effects are present. The decay of the total energy is of polynomial type. The conclusions of this paper improve previous results on the subject.     

Asymptotic behavior of recursions via fixed point theory

In this paper we provide a formulation of initial value problems for (explicit and implicit) difference equations in terms of abstract equations in sequence spaces. They will be solved using appropriate fixed point theorems and we obtain quantitative attractivity properties.     

Strong convergence of approximate solutions for nonlinear hyperbolic equation without convexity

Schonbek [M.E. Schonbek, Convergence of solutions to nonlinear dispersive equations, Comm. Partial Differential Equations 7 (1982) 959-1000] obtained the strong convergence of uniform bounded approximate solutions to hyperbolic scalar equation under the assumption that the flux function is strictly convex. While in this paper, by constructing four families of Lax entropies, we succeed in dealing with the non-convexity with the aid of the well-known Bernstein-Weierstrass theorem, and obtaining the strong convergence of uniform L^∞ or bounded viscosity solutions for scalar conservation law without convexity.     

Positivity and stability of the essential spectrum for singular transport semigroups with non-vacuum boundary conditions

In this paper we prove some compactness results for a large class of singular transport equations. Our approach relies on some comparison results for positive operators. Our results extend and complete several earlier works. We also provide simpler proofs for several known results in the literature.     

Characterizations of linear Volterra integral equations with nonnegative kernels

We first introduce the notion of positive linear Volterra integral equations. Then, we offer a criterion for positive equations in terms of the resolvent. In particular, equations with nonnegative kernels are positive. Next, we obtain a variant of the Paley-Wiener theorem for equations of this class and its extension to perturbed equations. Furthermore, we get a Perron-Frobenius type theorem for linear Volterra integral equations with nonnegative kernels. Finally, we give a criterion for positivity of the initial function semigroup of linear Volterra integral equations and provide a necessary and sufficient condition for exponential stability of the semigroups.
