Formation of higher‐order structure in crystallization from microphase‐separated melts was studied for polystyrene–polyethylene (PS–PE) diblock copolymers and PS–PE–PS triblock copolymers with time‐resolved synchrotron small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SR–SAXS) techniques. The PE block was crystallized at temperatures when the PS block was in the glassy state. In both crystallization and melting processes, only the peak intensity in the SR–SAXS curve changed, however, the peak positions including higher‐order peaks did not change. This means that the microphase‐structure in the crystalline state was completely the same as that in the molten state. These behaviors were observed regardless of any melt microphase structure. Also, once a stable microphase structure was formed in the molten state, the structure was not changed even if crystallization and melting were repeated. Behavior of crystallization from such microphase‐separated melts was also studied. Apparent activation energies of crystallization were high for all block copolymers, compared with that for the PE homopolymer. In particular, the triblock copolymers showed higher apparent activation energies than the diblock copolymers. Both degrees of crystallinity and Avrami indices were greatly suppressed in crystallization from the cylindrical domain. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of rod–coil diblock copolymers, consisting of poly{2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} as a rigid segment and poly(n‐butyl acrylate) as a flexible part, were successfully prepared through two inverse procedures by atom transfer radical polymerization. The copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatography and had high molecular weights and relatively narrow polydispersities (polydispersity index < 1.20). All the block copolymers synthesized had two distinct glass‐transition temperatures according to differential scanning calorimetry. A polarizing optical microscopy investigation demonstrated the liquid crystallinity of the diblock copolymers. The self‐assembly behaviors in dilute solutions was studied by transmission electron microscopy. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 5935–5943, 2005  相似文献

True model linear poly(styrene‐b‐dimethylsiloxane) PS‐b‐PDMS copolymers were synthesized by using sequential addition of monomers and anionic polymerization (high‐vacuum techniques), employing the most recent experimental procedures that allow the controlled polymerization of each monomer to obtain blocks with controlled molar masses. The model diblock copolymers obtained were analyzed by using different techniques, such as size‐exclusion chromatography, 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, small angle X‐rays scattering (SAXS), and wide angle X‐rays scattering (WAXS). The PS‐b‐PDMS copolymers obtained showed narrow molar mass distribution and variable PDMS content, ranging from 2 up to 55 wt %. Compacted powder samples were investigated by SAXS to reveal their structure and morphology changes on thermal treatment in the interval from 30 to 200 °C. The sample with the highest PDMS content exhibits a lamellar morphology, whereas two other samples show hexagonally packed cylinders of PDMS in a PS matrix. For the lowest PDMS content samples, the SAXS pattern corresponds to a disordered morphology and did not show any changes on thermal treatment. Detailed information about the morphology of scattering domains was obtained by fitting the SAXS scattering curves. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Surface‐modified CdS nanoparticles selectively dispersed in hexagonally packed poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) cylinders of poly(styrene‐b‐ethylene oxide) (PSEO) block copolymers were prepared. The photoluminescence and ultraviolet–visible characteristics of the presynthesized CdS nanoparticles in N,N‐dimethylformamide and in PEO domains of the PSEO block copolymers were determined. Because of strong interactions between the CdS nanoparticles and PEO chains, as shown by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the incorporation of the CdS nanoparticles prevented the PEO cylinders from properly crystallizing; this was confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction measurements. The intercylinder distance between the swollen and reduced‐crystallinity CdS/PEO cylinders in turn increased, as confirmed by small‐angle X‐ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy. At a high CdS concentration (43 wt % or 8.3 vol % with respect to PEO), however, the hexagonally packed cylindrical nanostructure of the PSEO diblock copolymers was destroyed. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic block copolymers containing β‐lactam groups on the polyisoprene block were synthesized from poly(isoprene‐b‐ethylene oxide) (IEO) diblock copolymer precursors, prepared by anionic polymerization. β‐Lactam functionalization was achieved via reaction of the polyisoprene (PI) block with chlorosulfonyl isocyanate and subsequent reduction. The resulting block copolymers were molecularly characterized by SEC, FTIR, and NMR spectroscopies and DSC. Functionalization was found to proceed in high yields, altering the solubility properties of the PI block and those of the functionalized diblocks. Hydrogen bond formation is assumed to be responsible for the decreased crystallinity of the poly(ethylene oxide) block (PEO) in the bulk state as indicated by DSC measurements. The self‐assembly behavior of the β‐lactam functionalized poly(isoprene‐b‐ethylene oxide) copolymers (LIEO) in aqueous solutions was studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS), static light scattering (SLS), fluorescence spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Nearly spherical loose aggregates were formed by the LIEO block copolymers, having lower aggregation numbers and higher cmc values compared to the IEO precursors, as a result of the increased polarity of the β‐lactam rings incorporated in the PI blocks. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic diblock and triblock copolymers of various block compositions based on hydrophilic poly(2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline) (PEtOz) and hydrophobic poly(ε‐caprolactone) were synthesized. The micelle formation of these block copolymers in aqueous media was confirmed by a fluorescence technique and dynamic light scattering. The critical micelle concentrations ranged from 35.5 to 4.6 mg/L for diblock copolymers and 4.7 to 9.0 mg/L for triblock copolymers, depending on the block composition. The phase‐transition behaviors of the block copolymers in concentrated aqueous solutions were investigated. When the temperature was increased, aqueous solutions of diblock and triblock copolymers exhibited gel–sol transition and precipitation, both of which were thermally reversible. The gel–sol transition‐ and precipitation temperatures were manipulated by adjustment of the block composition. As the hydrophobic portion of block copolymers became higher, a larger gel region was generated. In the presence of sodium chloride, the phase transitions were shifted to a lower temperature level. Sodium thiocyanate displaced the gel region and precipitation temperatures to a higher temperature level. The low molecular weight saccharides, such as glucose and maltose, contributed to the shift of phase‐transition temperatures to a lower temperature level, where glucose was more effective than maltose in lowering the gel–sol transition temperatures. The malonic acid that formed hydrogen bonds with the PEtOz shell of micelles was effective in lowering phase‐transition temperatures to 1.0M, above which concentration the block copolymer solutions formed complex precipitates. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Diblock copolymers consisting of methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (MPEG) and poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL), poly(δ‐valerolactone) (PVL), poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA), or poly(lactic‐co‐glycolic acid) (PLGA) as biodegradable polyesters were prepared to examine the phase transition of diblock copolymer solutions. MPEG–PCL and MPEG–PVL diblock copolymers and MPEG–PLLA and MPEG–PLGA diblock copolymers were synthesized by the ring‐opening polymerization of ?‐caprolactone or δ‐valerolactone in the presence of HCl · Et2O as a monomer activator at room temperature and by the ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide or a mixture of L ‐lactide and glycolide in the presence of stannous octoate at 130 °C, respectively. The synthesized diblock copolymers were characterized with 1H NMR, IR, and gel permeation chromatography. The phase transitions for diblock copolymer aqueous solutions of various concentrations were explored according to the temperature variation. The diblock copolymer solutions exhibited the phase transition from gel to sol with increasing temperature. As the polyester block length of the diblock copolymers increased, the gel‐to‐sol transition moved to a lower concentration region. The gel‐to‐sol transition showed a dependence on the length of the polyester block segment. According to X‐ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry thermal studies, the gel‐to‐sol transition of the diblock copolymer solutions depended on their degrees of crystallinity because water could easily diffuse into amorphous polymers in comparison with polymers with a crystalline structure. The crystallinity markedly depended on both the distinct character and composition of the block segment. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 5784–5793, 2004  相似文献

We report the synthesis, morphology, and charge‐transporting characteristics of new crystalline–crystalline diblock copolymers, poly(3‐hexylthiophene‐block‐stearyl acrylate) (P3HT‐b‐PSA). Three different diblock copolymers, P1 , P2 , and P3 , with P3HT/PSA polymerization degree block ratios of 60/26, 60/50, and 60/360, respectively, were prepared for investigating the morphology‐property relationship and the dependence of optoelectronic properties on the block copolymer structure. Small‐ and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering indicated the presence of both P3HT and PSA crystalline domains and the presence of microphase separation among blocks. The transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy results revealed that the diblock copolymers cast from chlorobenzene, tended to form needle‐like morphologies. The field‐effect mobilities of the diblock copolymers deposited on untreated SiO2 substrates, decreased with increasing PSA block length. In a sharp contrast, the mobilities enhanced with increasing PSA content when the P3HT‐b‐PSA was deposited on phenyltrichlorosilane (PTS)‐treated substrates. The copolymers with a 60/360 P3HT/PSA ratio showed a good mobility of 4 × 10?3 cm2 V?1 s?1 and a high on/off ratio of 7 × 106 on PTS‐treated substrates. This study highlighted the importance of the block ratio, the substrate and self‐assembly structures on the charge transport characteristics of the crystalline–crystalline conjugated diblock copolymers. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic poly(n‐butylene oxide)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PBO–PEO) diblock copolymers of various compositions were synthesized and studied as modifiers for epoxy resins. In blends of PBO–PEO, epoxy resin, and curing agent, the copolymers formed well‐defined microstructures that persisted upon curing of the epoxy. The resulting morphologies were vesicles, worm‐like micelles, and spherical micelles (in order of increasing size of PEO block), as well as transitional morphologies. Addition of 5% by weight of these block copolymers improved the fracture toughness of the epoxy by as much as 19 times with relatively small reduction in the elastic modulus. The highest level of toughness was measured in a system containing branched worm‐like micelles. Close examination of the fracture surfaces of these compositions suggests that although all the dispersed morphologies played a similar role to inclusions in particle‐toughened thermosets, crack deflection toughening contributed to the significantly higher levels of toughness in the worm‐like micelle systems. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) homopolymers synthesized by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization were used as macro‐chain‐transfer agents to synthesize smart amphiphilic block copolymers with a switchable hydrophilic–hydrophobic block of PNIPAAm and a hydrophilic block of poly(N‐dimethylacrylamide). All polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, 1H NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry. The reversible micelles formed by the block copolymers of various compositions in aqueous solutions were characterized by 1H NMR, dynamic light scattering, and tensiometry. Micelles were observed in the aqueous solutions when the temperature was increased to 40 °C because of the collapse of the PNIPAAm structure, which led to a PNIPAAm hydrophobic block. The drug loading capacity was illustrated with the use of the solvatochromic Reichardt's dye and measured by ultraviolet–visible. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD) polystyrene‐b‐poly[methyl(3,3,3‐trifluoropropyl)siloxane] (PS‐b‐PMTFPS) diblock copolymers were synthesized by the sequential anionic polymerization of styrene and trans‐1,3,5‐trimethyl‐1,3,5‐tris(3′,3′,3′‐trifluoropropyl)cyclotrisiloxane in tetrahydrofuran (THF) with n‐butyllithium as the initiator. The diblock copolymers had narrow MWDs ranging from 1.06 to 1.20 and number‐average molecular weights ranging from 8.2 × 103 to 37.1 × 103. To investigate the properties of the copolymers, diblock copolymers with different weight fractions of poly[methyl(3,3,3‐trifluoropropyl)siloxane] (15.4–78.8 wt %) were prepared. The compositions of the diblock copolymers were calculated from the characteristic proton integrals of 1H NMR spectra. For the anionic ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of 1,3,5‐trimethyl‐1,3,5‐tris(3′,3′,3′‐trifluoropropyl)cyclotrisiloxane (F3) initiated by polystyryllithium, high monomer concentrations could give high polymer yields and good control of MWDs when THF was used as the polymerization solvent. It was speculated that good control of the block copolymerization under the condition of high monomer concentrations was due to the slowdown of the anionic ROP rate of F3 and the steric hindrance of the polystyrene precursors. There was enough time to terminate the ROP of F3 when the polymer yield was high, and good control of block copolymerization could be achieved thereafter. The thermal properties (differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis) were also investigated for the PS‐b‐PMTFPS diblock copolymers. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Regioregular poly(3‐hexylthiophene)‐b‐poly(1H,1H‐dihydro perfluorooctyl methacrylate) (P3HT‐b‐PFOMA) diblock copolymers were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization of fluorooctyl methacrylate using bromoester terminated poly(3‐hexylthiophene) macroinitiators in order to investigate their morphological properties. The P3HT macroinitiator was previously prepared by chemical modification of hydroxy terminated P3HT. The block copolymers were well characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Transmission electron microscopy was used to investigate the nanostructured morphology of the diblock copolymers. The block copolymers are able to undergo microphase separation and self‐assemble into well‐defined and organized nanofibrillar‐like micellar morphology. The development of the morphology of P3HT‐b‐PFOMA block copolymers was investigated after annealing in solvent vapor and also in supercritical CO2. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of poly(styrene‐block‐ferrocenyldimethylsilane) copolymers (SF) with different relative molar masses of the blocks were prepared by sequential anionic polymerization. The bulk morphology of these polymers, studied by TEM and SAXS, showed well‐ordered lamellar and cylindrical domains as well as disordered micellar structures. Temperature‐dependent rheological measurements exhibited an order–disorder transition for SF 17/8 (the numbers refer to the relative molar masses in 103 g/mol) between 170 and 180°C, and an order–order transition for SF 9/19 between 190 and 200°C. The morphologies of binary blends of the diblocks with homopolymer were also investigated. In the blends the molar mass of the homopolymer was always less than the molar mass of the matching block. Ordered spheres on a bcc lattice and double‐gyroid morphology were observed for the blends. The double‐gyroid morphology was found only in F‐rich diblock/homopolymer systems. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 37: 1009–1021, 1999  相似文献

Telechelic poly(ether ketone)s (PEKs) and polyisobutylenes (PIBs) were combined to form PIB? PEK? PIB triblock copolymers and (PIB? PEK)n multiblock copolymers via the formation of urea linkages. Monovalent and bivalent amino telechelic PIBs were prepared quantitatively from allyl telechelic PIBs by a newly developed reaction sequence featuring nucleophilic reaction steps. Telechelic PEK? NCO polymers were prepared from the corresponding amino telechelic PEKs via a reaction with diphosgene. The highly reactive PEK? NCO and PIB? NH2 telechelics formed PEK? PIB block copolymers only quantitatively when appropriately reactive primary amino groups were present on the amino telechelic PIBs. The obtained block copolymers were microphase‐separated and featured mostly lamellar structures, as determined by small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS). Temperature‐dependent SAXS measurements revealed ordered polymers in the melt up to 210 °C. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 188–202, 2005  相似文献

A series of novel rod–coil diblock copolymers on the basis of mesogen‐jacketed liquid‐crystalline polymer were successfully prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization from the flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) macroinitiator. The hybrid diblock copolymers, poly{2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene}‐block‐polydimethylsiloxane, had number‐average molecular weights (Mn's) ranging from 9500 to 30,900 and relatively narrow polydispersities (≤1.34). The polymerization proceeded with first‐order kinetics. Data from differential scanning calorimetry validated the microphase separation of the diblock copolymers. All block copolymers exhibited thermotropic liquid‐crystalline behavior except for the one with Mn being 9500. Four liquid‐crystalline diblock copolymers with PDMS weight fractions of more than 18% had two distinctive glass‐transition temperatures. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hybrid dendritic‐linear block copolymers were made in one‐pot by convergent living anionic polymerization. Dendritic polystyrene macroinitiators were synthesized by slowly adding a mixture of either vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) or 4‐(chlorodimethylsilyl)styrene (CDMSS) and styrene (1 : 10 molar ratio of coupling agent to styrene) to a solution of living polystyryllithium. The addition was ceased prior to the addition of a stoichiometric amount of coupling agent to retain a living chain end. To the living dendritically branched polystyrene was then added either styrene or isoprene to polymerize a linear block from the dendritic polystyrene. The resulting copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography coupled with multiangle laser light scattering (GPC‐MALLS), which clearly demonstrated the formation of diblock copolymers. The diblock copolymers were further characterized by 1H NMR, which showed the presence of the two blocks in the case of dendritic polystyrene‐block‐linear polyisoprene. The measurement of intrinsic viscosity showed that the dilute solution properties of the block copolymers are greatly influenced by the dendritic portion. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Controlled polystyrenes with different molar mass values were synthesized starting from benzoyl peroxide and TEMPO (2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy). The polystyrene homopolymers served as initiators for the block copolymerization of phthalimide methylstyrene (PIMS) to synthesize polystyrene‐b‐poly(PIMS) diblock copolymers. Diblock copolymers with well defined structures as well as controlled and narrow molar mass distribution were obtained from the lower‐mass polystyrene homopolymers. The lower‐mass copolymers were found to be active as initiators in the synthesis of the polystyrene‐b‐poly(PIMS)‐b‐polystyrene triblock copolymers. In each reaction step, the effects of conversion and reaction time on the molar mass characteristics of the prepared block copolymers were investigated. The diblock and triblock copolymers were modified using hydrazine as the reagent in order to obtain the corresponding functional amino block copolymers. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Amphiphilic block copolymers can be conveniently prepared via convergent syntheses, allowing each individual polymer block to be prepared via the polymerization technique that gives the best architectural control. The convergent “click‐chemistry” route presented here, gives access to amphiphilic diblock copolymers prepared from a ring opening metathesis polymer and polyethylene glycol. Because of the high functional group tolerance of ruthenium carbene initiators, highly functional ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) polymer blocks can be prepared. The described synthetic route allows the conjugation of these polymer blocks with other end‐functional polymers to give well‐defined and highly functional amphiphilic diblock copolymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic diblock copolymer polycaprolactone‐block‐poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PCL‐b‐PGMA) was synthesized via enzymatic ring‐opening polymerization (eROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Methanol first initiated eROP of ?‐caprolactone (?‐CL) in the presence of biocatalyst Novozyme‐435 under anhydrous conditions. The resulting monohydroxyl‐terminated polycaprolactone (PCL–OH) was subsequently converted to a bromine‐ended macroinitiator (PCL–Br) for ATRP by esterification with α‐bromopropionyl bromide. PCL‐b‐PGMA diblock copolymers were synthesized in a subsequent ATRP of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). A kinetic analysis of ATRP indicated a living/controlled radical process. The macromolecular structures were characterized for PCL–OH, PCL–Br, and the block copolymers by means of nuclear magnetic resonance, gel permeation chromatography, and infrared spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction analyses indicated that the copolymer composition (?‐CL/GMA) had a great influence on the thermal properties. The well‐defined, amphiphilic diblock copolymer PCL‐b‐PGMA self‐assembled into nanoscale micelles in aqueous solutions, as investigated by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylethylene‐b‐ethylene oxide) (PEE‐PEO) diblock copolymers with pyridine‐benzoic acid end‐groups for heterodimeric hydrogen bonding were designed as a possible means to noncentrosymmetric organizations by spontaneous self‐assembly. These end‐functionalized polymers were synthesized by anionic living polymerization with protected initiator and terminating reagents. A series of polymeric intermediates with different end‐groups was characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance, matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry, and gel permeation chromatography. Preliminary studies of solid‐state organization by differential scanning calorimetry and small‐angle X‐ray scattering provided evidence for a long‐range order that was sensitive to chain length, copolymer composition, and end‐group structure. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
