(1)H NMR chemical shift, spin-lattice relaxation time, spin-spin relaxation time, self-diffusion coefficient, and two-dimensional nuclear Overhauser enhancement (2D NOESY) measurements have been used to study the nonionic-ionic surfactant mixed micelles. Cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were used as the ionic surfactants and polyethylene glycol (23) lauryl ether (Brij-35) as the nonionic surfactant. The two systems are both with varying molar ratios of CTAB/Brij-35 (C/B) and SDS/Brij-35 (S/B) ranging from 0.5 to 2, respectively, at a constant concentration of 6 mM for Brij-35 in aqueous solutions. Results give information about the relative arrangement of the surfactant molecules in the mixed micelles. In the former system, the trimethyl groups attached to the polar heads of the CTAB molecules are located between the first oxy-ethylene groups next to the hydrophobic chains of Brij-35 molecules. These oxy-ethylene groups gradually move outward from the hydrophobic core of the mixed micelle with an increase in C/B in the mixed solution. In contrast to the case of the CTAB/Triton X-100 system, the long flexible hydrophilic poly oxy-ethylene chains, which are in the exterior part of the mixed micelles, remain coiled, but looser, surrounding the hydrophobic core. There is almost no variation in conformation of the hydrophilic chains of Brij-35 molecules in the mixed micelles of the SDS/Brij-35 system as the S/B increases. The hydrophobic chains of both CTAB and SDS are co-aggregated with Brij-35, respectively, in their mixed micellar cores.  相似文献

Micellization of Triton X-100 (TX-100) and sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDSN) in the presence of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (PAAM) was studied by 1H NMR spin–spin and spin–lattice relaxation. Relaxation experiment results show that TX-100 behaves differently from SDSN in micellization in the presence of PAAM. PAAM causes a decrease in the critical micellar concentration of SDSN, while it has no influence on the critical micellar concentration of TX-100. The lack of cross peaks between protons of PAAM and those of TX-100 and SDSN in the 2D nuclear Overhauser enhancement spectroscopy (NOESY) spectra confirms self-aggregation of TX-100 and SDSN in the presence of PAAM. The identity of each of the corresponding interproton distances of TX-100 with and without the addition of PAAM further confirms the formation of normal TX-100 micelles in the presence of PAAM. Besides, the distances between protons on the hydrophilic and hydrophobic chains in TX-100 micelles, calculated from the 2D NOESY spectra, are remarkably shorter than those for an extended hydrophilic poly(oxyethylene) chain. This implies that the hydrophilic chain is curled upon micellization. Received: 2 February 1999 Accepted in revised form: 2 June 1999  相似文献

The effect of UQ0 on the micellization equilibrium of Triton X-100 has been studied by the analysis of the UV absorption spectra of Triton X-100. In the range of the UQ0 concentration investigated, the critical micelle concentration (CMC) increases at increasing of the solute concentration. The dependence of the CMC on UQ0 concentration has been used to calculate the generalized Setchenov constant. Mixing and dilution enthalpies of aqueous solutions of UQ0 and Triton X-100 were measured and used to calculate the enthalpies of transfer of UQ0 from water to Triton X-100 aqueous solutions. From the dependence of the enthalpy of transfer on surfactant concentration, the distribution constant between aqueous and micellar phase and the standard enthalpy of transfer from water to Triton X-100 micelles were evaluated along with the standard transfer free energy and entropy. All measurements were carried out at 298 K.  相似文献

Thermodynamic studies of mixed ionic/nonionic surfactant systems   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Mixtures of alkyltrimethylammonium bromide (CnTAB, n=12, 14, 16, 18) and Triton X-100 were studied at a range of mole fractions of ionic surfactant per nonionic surfactant. For each mixture, the cmc obtained from surface tension measurements differed from that obtained using potentiometry. The behavior of these mixed-surfactant systems showed three different regions with increasing total surfactant concentration. From the surface tension and potentiometry data, we obtained the free monomer concentration of ionic surfactant (mi), the micellar mole fraction of surfactant (xi), and the degree of dissociation (alpha) of ionic surfactant. We also obtained the free monomer concentration of Triton X-100 (m2) using PFG-NMR technique. A new equation was introduced to evaluate the activity coefficient in the micellar phase. The excess free energy (GE) and the synergetic parameters of mixtures were determined at various mole fractions of CnTAB/Triton X-100. Finally, the complexity of the synergism parameters was investigated.  相似文献

Abstract— A previous study on the electronic spectroscopy of p -N,N-dialkylaminobenzylidenemalononitrile, 1, has been extended to a larger variety of organic solvents and to micelles of ionic and nonionic surfactants. By comparing the fluorescence emission (λF and φ) of 1 in micelles and in homogeneous organic solvents, the effective polarity and the microviscosity of the micellar environments of potassium dodecanoate, sodium dodecyl sulfate, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and Triton X-100 micelles have been determined to be 40, 40, 36 and 28, respectively and 23, 31, 34 and 28 cP, respectively. These results indicate that the fluorescence probe is located in the micelle–water interface of a micelle and this region of a micelle is polar and viscous. 1 has also been studied in different surfactants with varying surfactant concentrations. The φ of 1, a microviscosity gauge for micellar aggregates, remains unchanged at the critical micelle concentrations of various surfactants, but decreases at much lower surfactant concentrations. This is attributable to the formation of premicellar aggregates of surfactant molecules below their critical micelle concentrations.  相似文献

The mechanism of micelle formation of surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), n-hexyldecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and Triton X-100 (TX-100) in heavy water solutions was studied by 1H NMR (chemical shift and line shape) and NMR self-diffusion experiments. 1H NMR and self-diffusion experiments of these three surfactants show that their chemical shifts (delta) begin to change and resonance peaks begins to broaden with the increase in concentration significantly below their critical micelle concentrations (cmc's). At the same time, self-diffusion coefficients ( D) of the surfactant molecules decrease simultaneously as their concentrations increase. These indicate that when the concentrations are near and lower than their cmc's, there are oligomers (premicelles) formed in these three surfactant systems. Carefully examining the dependence of chemical shift and self-diffusion coefficient on concentration in the region just slightly above their cmc's, one finds that the pseudophase transition model is not applicable to the variation of physical properties (chemical shift and self-diffusion coefficient) with concentration of these systems. This indicates that premicelles still exist in this concentration region along with the formation of micelles. The curved dependence of chemical shift and self-diffusion coefficient on the increase in concentration suggests that the premicelles grow as the concentration increases until a definite value when the size of the premicelle reaches that of the micelle, i.e., the system is likely dominated by the monomers and micelles. Additionally, the approximate values of premicelle coming forth concentration (pmc) and cmc were obtained by again fitting chemical shifts to reciprocals of concentrations at a different perspective, and are in good accordant with experimental results and literature values and prove the former conclusion.  相似文献

The micellar dependencies of the photophysical properties of benoxaprofen (BXP), a 2-phenyl benzoxazole derivative, have been investigated using fluorescence spectroscopy and laser flash photolysis techniques. The fluorescence of BXP in aqueous solution has been observed to be remarkably quenched upon addition of a surfactant, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) or Triton X-100, in contrast to its enhancement in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micellar solution. Time-resolved fluorescence measurements show that the fluorescence decays biexponentially in the micellar solution, indicating the relaxation of micellar environments surrounding the excited BXP. The major component of fluorescence lifetimes in CTAB or Triton X-100 micellar phase is even shorter (330–427ps) than in SDS micellar phase (731 ps). The nonradiative decay constants are significantly larger (ca 3.0 times 109 s?1) in the CTAB or Triton X-100 micellar phase than in SDS micelles by a factor of ca 10. The major nonradiative decay is interpreted to be the internal conversion due to nuclear geometric change of BXP in the first excited singlet state. This is consistent with the observation that the quantum yields of intersystem crossing are very low (less than 0.01) in the micellar solutions as determined by the laser flash photolysis technique. The laser-induced transient absorption spectrum of BXP in CTAB or Triton X-100 micellar solution shows that the decay kinetics of the transients in CTAB or Triton X-100 are significantly different from first order kinetics in SDS.  相似文献

Spin-lattice relaxation time, spin-spin relaxation time and two-dimensional nuclear Overhauser enhancement spectroscopy (2D NOESY) experiments of polyoxyethylene lauryl ether (Brij-35) micelles in aqueous solutions at a concentration of 100 times the critical micellar concentration (cmc) give direct evidence that the hydrophilic polyoxyethylene chains, staying in the exterior of the micellar core, are coiled, bent and aligned around the micellar core with a certain number of water molecules included. This hydrophilic layer is in contact with the solvent, water, keeping the micellar solution stable. 1H NMR relaxation time measurements show that the first oxyethylene group next to the alkyl chain participates in the formation of the surface area of the micellar core. The motion of the hydrophilic polyoxyethylene chains is less restricted as compared with the hy-drophobic alkyl chains.  相似文献

The interactions of non-ionic surfactant Triton X-100 and the coat protein of tobacco mosaic virus, which is an established model for both ordered and non-ordered protein aggregation, were studied using turbidimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, isothermal titration calorimetry, and dynamic light scattering. It was found that at the critical aggregation concentration (equal to critical micelle concentration) of 138 x 10(-6) M, Triton X-100 induces partial denaturation of tobacco mosaic virus coat protein molecules followed by protein amorphous aggregation. Protein aggregation has profound ionic strength dependence and proceeds due to hydrophobic sticking of surfactant-protein complexes (start aggregates) with initial radii of 46 nm. It has been suggested that the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate forms mixed micelles with Triton X-100 and therefore reverses protein amorphous aggregation with release of protein molecules from the amorphous aggregates. A stoichiometric ratio of 5 was found for Triton X-100-sodium dodecyl sulfate interactions.  相似文献

《Colloids and Surfaces》1993,69(4):249-263
The dynamic surface of sodium tetradecylsulphate and sodium bexadecylsulphate solutions in water and also in Triton X-100 solutions was measured by the maximum bubble-pressure method, using modern computerized instrumentation, for a wide range of surface lifetimes (from 0.001 to 10 s), temperatures (from 30 to 80°C) and surfactant concentrations (from 1 to 200 CMC). On the basis of a previously suggested adsorption kinetics theory for micellar solutions of ionogenic surfactants (V.B. Fainerman, Colloids Surfaces, 62 (1992) 333) a method was developed for the calculation of the micellar dissociation rate constant k. For the surfactants studied, k increases with increasing concentration. Moreover, for ionic surfactants the dependence of k on concentration (C) becomes more striking for C> (10–30) CMC. This can be explained by a micelle shape transition and by a strengthening of the intermolecular repulsion in micelles. In solutions of the ionic surfactants the constant k increasing with increasing temperature, whereas in Triton X-100 solutions a temperature dependence is absent. This phenomenon is associated with the different nature of the molecular interactions for ionogenic and non-ionogenic surfactants in micelles. The k values, obtained from results of dynamic surface tension measurements, are in satisfactory agreement with the results of a study of the relaxation of micellar solutions published previously.  相似文献

We present a unique analysis tool for the selective detection of local water inside soft molecular assemblies (hydrophobic cores, vesicular bilayers, and micellar structures) suspended in bulk water. Through the use of dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP), the (1)H NMR signal of water is amplified, as it interacts with stable radicals that possess approximately 658 times higher spin polarization. We utilized stable nitroxide radicals covalently attached along the hydrophobic tail of stearic acid molecules that incorporate themselves into surfactant-based micelle or vesicle structures. Here, we present a study of local water content and fluid viscosity inside oleate micelles and vesicles and Triton X-100 micelles to serve as model systems for soft molecular assemblies. This approach is unique because the amplification of the NMR signal is performed in bulk solution and under ambient conditions with site-specific spin labels that only detect the water that is directly interacting with the localized spin labels. Continuous wave (cw) electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis provides rotational dynamics of the spin-labeled molecular chain segments and local polarity parameters that can be related to hydration properties, whereas we show that DNP-enhanced (1)H NMR analysis of fluid samples directly provides translational water dynamics and permeability of the local environment probed by the spin label. Our technique therefore has the potential to become a powerful analysis tool, complementary to cw ESR, to study hydration characteristics of surfactant assemblies, lipid bilayers, or protein aggregates, where water dynamics is a key parameter of their structure and function. In this study, we find that there is significant penetration of water inside the oleate micelles with a higher average local water viscosity ( approximately 1.8 cP) than in bulk water, and Triton X-100 micelles and oleate vesicle bilayers mostly exclude water while allowing for considerable surfactant chain motion and measurable water permeation through the soft structure.  相似文献

The mixed micellar properties of a triblock copolymer, Pluronic L64, (EO)13(PO)30(EO)13, and a nonionic surfactant, Triton X-100, in aqueous solution with conventional alkyl ammonium bromides and their dimeric homologues were investigated with the help of fluorescence and cloud point measurements. The composition of mixed micelles and the interaction parameter, beta, evaluated from the critical micelle concentration (cmc) data for different mixtures using Rubingh's and Motomura's theories are discussed. It has been observed that the mixed micelle formation between monomeric/dimeric alkyl ammonium bromides and L64 was due to synergistic interactions which increase with the increase in hydrophobicity of the cationic component. On the other hand, synergistic mixing was observed in the mixed micelles of Triton X-100 and monomeric cationic surfactants, the magnitude of which decreases slightly with the increase in hydrophobicity of the cationic component. Antagonistic interactions were observed in the case of Triton X-100 and dimeric cationic surfactants.  相似文献

We carried out the first study about the effect of a compressed gas on the properties of reverse micellar solutions with ionic liquid (IL) polar cores. And the properties of compressed CO2/cyclohexane/1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim][BF4])/Triton X-100 (TX-100) system were investigated at 288.2, 293.2, 298.2, 308.2 K and different pressures by using phase behavior measurement, small-angle x-ray scattering, and UV-Vis techniques. The concentration of the surfactant in the solution was 0.3 mol/l (M). It was found that compressed CO2 could enhance solubilization of the IL in the reverse micelles considerably at suitable pressures, and formation of the reverse micelles could be controlled easily by pressure. Increase of CO2 pressure resulted in decrease of the micellar sizes at fixed [bmim][BF4]-to-surfactant molar ratios (w), and the size of the reverse micelles increased with the increase of w values. The polarity of the IL cores increased continuously with increasing w value.  相似文献

Static and dynamic light scattering experiments show that the mixed micelles of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cocoamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) undergo a sphere-to-rod transition at unexpectedly low total surfactant concentrations, about 10 mM. The lowest transition concentration is observed at molar fraction 0.8 of CAPB in the surfactant mixture. The transition brings about a sharp increase in the viscosity of the respective surfactant solutions due to the growth of rodlike micelles. Parallel experiments with mixed solutions of CAPB and sodium laureth sulfate (sodium dodecyl-trioxyethylene sulfate, SDP3S) showed that the sphere-to-rod transition in SDP3S/CAPB mixtures occurs at higher surfactant concentrations, above 40 mM. The observed difference in the transition concentrations for SDS and SDP3S can be explained by the bulkier SDP3S headgroup. The latter should lead to larger mean area per molecule in the micelles containing SDP3S and, hence, to smaller spontaneous radius of curvature of the micelles (i.e., less favored transition from spherical to rodlike micelles). The static light scattering data are used to determine the mean aggregation number and the effective size of the spherical mixed SDS/CAPB micelles. From the dependence of the aggregation number on the surfactant concentration, the mean energy for transfer of a surfactant molecule from a spherical into a rodlike micelle is estimated.  相似文献

Diffusion of Triton X-100 through Celgard 2500 membranes was examined. The pore permeability for monomers was 5.0 × 10−6 cm2/sec and it was measured for upstream concentrations below the CMC value of 2.29 × 10−4M at 30°C. This value is close to the monomer diffusion coefficient in bulk suggesting that the monomers do not experience significant hindrance due to the pore walls. The permeability of the surfactant drops abruptly within a narrow range of reservoir solution concentrations in the vicinity of the CMC. At concentrations 10 × CMC, the permeability coefficient becomes constant and equal to 3.9 × 10−7 cm2/sec which is the pore permeability for the Triton X-100 micelles. Compared to the diffusion coefficient of micelles in bulk water, the transport of micelles is hindered by the pore walls. In a 10-fold concentration range the micellar pore permeability is practically constant indicating no large change in micelle size. The chemical equilibrium model applied to surfactant diffusion in pores shows reasonable agreement over the entire range of the experimental data for reservoir concentrations from one-fifth times the CMC to 100 times the CMC.  相似文献

The spectral and redox behavior of bis(diimine)copper(II) complexes, where diimine is bipyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline, 4-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline, 5-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline, 5-nitro-1,10-phenanthroline, 4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, 5,6-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline and dipyrido-[3,2-d:2',3'-f]-quinoxaline, are significantly different in aqueous and in aqueous SDS, CTAB and Triton X-100 micellar solutions. The (1)H NMR spectral study in aqueous (D(2)O) and aqueous micelles reveals that the Cu(II) complexes interact more strongly with SDS than with CTAB and Triton X-100 micelles and at sites on SDS micelles different from those on the latter. Ligand Field spectral studies reveal that the complexes exist as the dicationic aquated species [Cu(diimine)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](2+), which interacts strongly with the anionic SDS micelles through columbic forces. However, they exist as [Cu(diimine)(2)(H(2)O)Cl](+) and/or [Cu(diimine)(2)H(2)] located in the hydrophobic microenvironments in Triton X-100 and CTAB micelles. The attainment of reversibility of the redox systems in the micellar microenvironments is remarkable and this illustrates that the Cu(II) and Cu(I) species undergo stereochemical changes suitable for reversible electron-transfer. The remarkable differences in spectral and electrochemical properties of Cu(II) complexes in aqueous and aqueous micellar solutions illustrate that the complexes are nestled largely within the micellar environments and imply that the accessibilities of the complexes to electron-transfer are different and are dependent on the nature of micelles as well as the nature and hydrophobicity of the diimine ligands.
