In order to develop new reference materials for microanalytical nuclear techniques, the Scanning Proton Microprobe (SPM) technique was used to determine homogeneity levels within 100×200 m2 micro-area on small pieces of IAEA Urban Dust reference materials. The experimental methods are described in detail. The results show that IAEA-396A/M Vienna Urban Dust is homogeneous enough for a SRM (10% for Si, S, K, Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn) for small sample analysis.  相似文献

Summary ko-Based Neutron Activation Analysis (koINAA) was used to analyze the candidate reference materials Apple Leaves and Peach Leaves, and Oriental Tobacco Leaves and Virginia Tobacco Leaves. Concentration values for 27 elements were measured. The accuracy was ascertained by analysis of two certified reference materials, NIST 1572 Citrus Leaves and 1573 Tomato Leaves. The homogeneity test of the IAEA Evernia prunastri candidate reference material in aliquots 100 mg is extended to the elements Sc, Cr, Fe, Co, Zn, Rb, Sb, Cs, Ba, Ce and Th.  相似文献

The IAEA laboratories have access to both nuclear analytical methods and conventional instrumental methods for trace analysis for the characterisation of its environmental and biological reference materials. A technical concept integrating the homogeneity data, the recommended test portion mass and the uncertainty on the trace element concentrations is explored using a combination of INAA, XRF, ICP-MS, ICP-AES, and AAS. The above approach is illustrated by selected examples of reference materials currently under evaluation for their trace element content. They include some or all of the following elements Al, As, Br, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Rb, Se, Sr, Th, U, Zn in environmental biomonitor organisms (lichen, algae) and air dust filters.  相似文献

The proceeding of the IAEA symposium held in 1978 on nuclear activation techniques in the life sciences are reviewed. A total of 56 papers are reviewed on methodology, analytical quality control, comparisons between neutron activation analysis and other methods, and applications of activation analysis in biology and medicine (including in-vivo activation analysis) and in public and environmental health. The materials analysed in the papers are adjusted in connection with the elements determined and the purposes of the study. Those elements are tabulated together with the analytical methods used for the element determination. The rapid adoption of microbial whole genome sequencing in public health, clinical testing, and forensic laboratories requires the use of validated measurement processes. Well-characterized, homogeneous, and stable microbial genomic reference materials can be used to evaluate measurement processes, improving confidence in microbial whole genome sequencing results. We have developed a reproducible and transparent bioinformatics tool, PEPR, Pipelines for Evaluating Prokaryotic References, for characterizing the reference genome of prokaryotic genomic materials. PEPR evaluates the quality, purity, and homogeneity of the reference material genome, and purity of the genomic material. The quality of the genome is evaluated using high coverage paired-end sequence data; coverage, paired-end read size and direction, as well as soft-clipping rates, are used to identify mis-assemblies. The homogeneity and purity of the material relative to the reference genome are characterized by comparing base calls from replicate datasets generated using multiple sequencing technologies. Genomic purity of the material is assessed by checking for DNA contaminants. We demonstrate the tool and its output using sequencing data while developing a Staphylococcus aureus candidate genomic reference material. A new approach to the assessment of homogeneity for powder samples of candidate reference materials with the help of electron probeX-ray micro-analysis (EPMA) is proposed. It is based on the utilisation of the Kolmogorov—Smirnov statistics coupled with the Akaike Information Criterion in the processing of the quantitative EPMA data. The evaluation of three IAEA candidate reference materials with the described approach is discussed.  相似文献

The homogeneity of four reference materials was evaluated for Se by cyclic instrumental neutron activation analysis (CINAA). The relative standard deviation for Se measurements at ppb levels by CINAA was <12% for NIST Wheat Flour (SRM 1567) in 5–10 mg samples, while it was <11% for Chinese Hair (HH–CH-1), <13% for IAEA Animal Muscle (H-4) and 25% for IAEA Animal Blood (A-13) in 50 mg samples. The highest relative subsampling uncertainties were observed in the mass range of samples 50 mg for Chinese Hair, 100 mg for Wheat Flour and Animal Muscle and 300 mg for Animal Blood. The results of a one-way analysis of variance indicate that all reference materials above these mass ranges are adequately homogeneous with respect to Se distribution. Our data suggest that these materials, except Animal Blood, can be used as reference standards for Se in Quality assurance programs well below the sample masses re commended by the issuing agencies.  相似文献

Summary In an effort to bring to the analytical community new natural matrix reference materials (RM's) for elemental composition quality control, ten new agricultural/food candidate reference materials prepared previously, were characterized for homogeneity. The materials include bovine muscle powder, whole egg powder, corn bran, microcrystalline cellulose, wheat gluten, whole milk powder, corn starch and three wheat flours representing a wide range of matrix types and elemental composition. Characterization was for up to some twenty five major, minor, trace and ultratrace elements of nutritional, toxicological and environmental significance. Solid sampling electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry was applied to the determination of copper and lead in sub-milligram subsamples. A variety of other analytical techniques via an interlaboratory cooperative effort was used to determine many other elements in 100–2000 mg subsample sizes. Good material homogeneity was observed for virtually all materials and analytes with the exception of Cr and Pb in limited instances. The materials were thus deemed suitable for detailed characterization of elemental concentration to lead to recommended values and to bring these biological products to reference material status.  相似文献

In human nutrition research, nuclear analytical techniques, particularly neutron activation analysis (NAA), are used mainly for thein vitro study of trace elements. According to work sponsored by the IAEA, up to 15 trace elements and 5 minor elements of nutritional interest may be determined in biological materials by NAA with good accuracy and precision. A programme is described in which NAA was used for the determination of 14 trace elements and one minor element in human milk. NAA also plays an important role in the certification of reference materials for nutritional studies.  相似文献

Homogeneity of the existing (Virginia Tobacco Leaves CTA-VTL-2 (ICHTJ), Apatite Concentrate CTA-AC-1 (ICHTJ), Fine Fly Ash CTA-FFA-1 (ICHTJ) and candidate certified reference materials (CRMs) (IAEA-338 Lichen, IAEA-413 Algae, Spruce Shoots RMF II (Germany)) was studied by neutron activation analysis (NAA). Several samples of small mass (ca. 1 or 10 mg) taken from various containers were analyzed by instrumental NAA and the results for several elements were compared by Fisher's test and t-test with analogous series of results for samples taken from one container. In the second approach, sampling variance was estimated for some elements from overall variance and the components of analytical variance. The results were interpreted with the aid of Ingamells' sampling constant. Particle size distribution of the reference materials was also measured by several techniques. In addition quantitative determinations for some elements were performed and results compared with the certified values. The results of the present study were discussed with reference to suitability of CRMs to microanalytical techniques. It was pointed out that the term "microanalysis" itself is not always unequivocally understood and used.  相似文献

Reference materials play an important role for evaluating the accuracy of analytical results, and are essential parts of good laboratory practice. They represent a key tool for quality control of chemical analyses. In Thailand, the demand of food and environmental reference materials is constantly increasing, and the National Institute of Metrology (NIMT, Thailand) is responding to the urgent needs for affordable materials, which require collaborative efforts at the national level. This paper describes the preparation of a new glutinous rice reference material, along with homogeneity and stability studies and the analytical work carried out for the certification of the contents of inorganic elements. The incurred material was collected from an actual rice paddy field. Material preparation along with homogeneity and stability testing were carried out at the Environmental Research Training Centre (ERTC). The homogeneity study was designed to have three experimental conditions; (A) 10 bottles of candidate materials being analyzed each with 2 replicates, (B) 20 bottles with 2 replicates, (C) 10 bottles with 7 replicates, in order to study the suitable treatments for homogeneity testing in the reference material production. It was shown that a minimum number of 10 bottles with duplicate analyses are enough to demonstrate the homogeneity of candidate reference material. Certification of a candidate reference material in a single laboratory using reference method was confirmed with an interlaboratory comparison participated by a certain number of well recognized testing laboratories in Thailand. Three different analytical techniques: INAA, X-ray fluorescence and atomic absorption spectrometry were used at the JRC Ispra to test the total homogeneity of four candidate botanic reference materials supplied by NBS. Without adopting complex statistical formalities a “degree of inhomogeneity” was estimated in each sample for the elements considered in the test. A suite of natural matrix reference materials (RMs) were used to assess the quality of analytical results obtained by k 0-instrumental neutron activation analysis (k 0-INAA) at the Joef Stefan Institute (IJS). Five certified reference materials (CRMs) from the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM), two standard reference materials (SRMs) from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), three RMs from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and one RM from IJS were analyzed. Altogether, results for twenty-four elements in inorganic matrices and twenty-nine elements in organic matrices, obtained by k 0-INAA, were compared to certified values. Results obtained show good agreement with certified or assigned values except for Fe, La, Nd, Sm and U in inorganic matrices, and Ag, Al and Cr in organic matrices.  相似文献

The most important fraction of aerosols with respect to human health is the respirable fraction, which has particles less than 10 m in equivalent aerodynamic diameter (EAD), the so called PM 10 fraction. The collection of these respirable particles and the determination of their trace element composition is the focus of an IAEA Co-ordinated Research Programme (CRP). The IAEA Laboratory participated in this Programme and established collection sites for the air particulate samples on the grounds of the Atominstitute of the Austrian Universities in Vienna and the IAEA Laboratories, Seibersdorf, representing an urban residential site and a rural site. The collected samples as well as samples of simulated air filters (used also for blind controls) and control materials were analyzed sequentially and/or in sections by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE), instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Results demonstrate the applicability of the PM-10 sampling approach, provided PIXE and/or INAA are used in the determinations. Reliable results can be obtained that will lead in comparable air pollution data for many regions in the world through CRP.  相似文献

For many years the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been promoting analytical quality assurance and quality control in its Member States with emphasis on measurands that are amenable to analysis by nuclear and related techniques, i.e. radionuclides, trace elements, and stable isotopes. This paper reviews briefly the rationale for some of these activities, particularly in relation to the needs of participants in developing countries arising out of co-ordinated research programmes, technical co-operation projects and global and regional networks. Emphasis is given to biological and environmental reference materials with a matrix of natural origin. Also described are some activities arising out of the requirements of ISO-25 and other relevant international quality standards.  相似文献

The starting material for two certified and one candidate reference material was obtained from dried grass specially cultivated on a selected and well prepared soil. The Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) of the Commission of the European Communities produced two certified reference materials (CRM's) from this dried grass: a rye grass material (CRM 281) certified in 1988 for the quality control of trace and toxic element analyses and a hay powder material (CRM 129) certified in 1989 for monitoring trace and minor elements. A fraction of the dried grass was used in 1993 for the preparation of a hay powder with a particle size of <63 m using newly developed grinding techniques.This paper compares the production methods of these three materials and the obtained particle size distribution of the powders. The analytical evaluation of these production methods was carried out by solid sampling Zeeman atomic absorption spectrometry for the determination of Cd, Pb and Zn.  相似文献

Internationally distributed organic and inorganic oxygen isotopic reference materials have been calibrated by six laboratories carrying out more than 5300 measurements using a variety of high‐temperature conversion techniques (HTC) a in an evaluation sponsored by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). To aid in the calibration of these reference materials, which span more than 125‰, an artificially enriched reference water (δ18O of +78.91‰) and two barium sulfates (one depleted and one enriched in 18O) were prepared and calibrated relative to VSMOW2 b and SLAP reference waters. These materials were used to calibrate the other isotopic reference materials in this study, which yielded:

The seemingly large estimated combined uncertainties arise from differences in instrumentation and methodology and difficulty in accounting for all measurement bias. They are composed of the 3‐fold standard errors directly calculated from the measurements and provision for systematic errors discussed in this paper. A primary conclusion of this study is that nitrate samples analyzed for δ18O should be analyzed with internationally distributed isotopic nitrates, and likewise for sulfates and organics. Authors reporting relative differences of oxygen‐isotope ratios (δ18O) of nitrates, sulfates, or organic material should explicitly state in their reports the δ18O values of two or more internationally distributed nitrates (USGS34, IAEA‐NO‐3, and USGS35), sulfates (IAEA‐SO‐5, IAEA‐SO‐6, and NBS 127), or organic material (IAEA‐601 benzoic acid, IAEA‐602 benzoic acid, and IAEA‐600 caffeine), as appropriate to the material being analyzed, had these reference materials been analyzed with unknowns. This procedure ensures that readers will be able to normalize the δ18O values at a later time should it become necessary. The high‐temperature reduction technique for analyzing δ18O and δ2H is not as widely applicable as the well‐established combustion technique for carbon and nitrogen stable isotope determination. To obtain the most reliable stable isotope data, materials should be treated in an identical fashion; within the same sequence of analyses, samples should be compared with working reference materials that are as similar in nature and in isotopic composition as feasible. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), through its Technical Co-operation Programme, has supported the establishment of many nuclear analytical and complementary laboratories in Member States. This included the development of capabilities for the use of various nuclear analytical techniques that include alpha, beta, and gamma spectrometry; radiochemical analysis; neutron activation analysis; energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis; and total reflection X-ray fluorescence. As economic, ecological, medical, and legal decisions are frequently based on laboratory results, they need to be based on accepted national and international standards.The IAEA has taken up this important issue to enhance and foster the competitiveness of nuclear analytical laboratories with the consideration that non-nuclear capabilities are equally important. The projects aim at enhanced quality awareness, a concise system for documentation, establishment of standard operating procedures, procedures for validation of methods, surveillance of method performance, systems for sample management, regular qualification of personnel, client liaison and safety. These projects follow the ISO/IEC 17025 standard and promote participating laboratories to maintain a self-sufficient quality system by which they might be able to obtain national accreditation.This contribution describes the general concept of these projects and discusses some of the results achieved.  相似文献

A candidate environmental certified reference material (CRM) for the determination of multielements in tea leaves and materials of similar matrix, NIES CRM No. 23 Tea Leaves II, has been developed and characterized by the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), Japan. The origin of the material was tea leaves, which were ground, sieved through a 106-μm mesh, homogenized, and then subdivided into amber glass bottles. The results of homogeneity and stability tests indicated that the material was sufficiently homogeneous and stable for use as a reference material. The property values of the material were statistically determined based on chemical analyses by a network of laboratories using a wide range of methods. Sixteen laboratories participated in the characterization, and nine certified values and five reference values were obtained. These property values of the candidate CRM, which are expressed as mass fractions, were close to the median and/or mean values of the mass fractions of elements in various tea products. The candidate CRM is appropriate for use in analytical quality control and in the evaluation of methods used in the analysis of tea and materials of similar matrix.  相似文献
