We examine the photophysics of a series of molecules consisting of a benzthiadiazole core surrounded by a network of benzyl ether arms terminated by aminopyrene chromophores, which function as both energy and electron donors. Three classes of molecules are studied: dendrimers whose peripheries are fully decorated with aminopyrene donors (F), disubstituted dendrimers whose peripheries contain only two donors (D), and linear analogues in which a pair of benzyl ether arms link two donors to the central core (L). The electronic energy transfer (EET) and charge transfer (CT) rates are determined by fluorescence lifetime measurements on the energy donors and electron acceptors, respectively. In all three types of molecules, the EET time scales as the square root of the generation number G, consistent with the flexible nature of the benzyl ether framework. Transient anisotropy measurements confirm that donor-donor energy hopping does not play a major role in determining the EET times. The CT dynamics occur on the nanosecond time scale and lead to stretched exponential decays, probably due to conformational disorder. Measurements at 100 degrees C confirm that conformational fluctuations play a role in the CT dynamics. The average CT time increases with G in the L and D molecules but decreases for the F dendrimers. This divergent behavior as G increases is attributed to the competing effects of larger donor-acceptor distances (which lengthen the CT time) versus a larger number of donors (which shorten the average CT time). This work illustrates two important points about light-harvesting and charge-separation dendrimers. First, the use of a flexible dendrimer framework can lead to a more favorable scaling of the EET time (and thus the light-harvesting efficiency) with dendrimer size, relative to what would be expected for a fully extended dendrimer. Second, fully decorated dendrimers can compensate for the distance-dependent slowdown in CT rate as G increases by providing additional pathways for the CT reaction to occur.  相似文献

A new synthetic approach leading to asymmetrically substituted polyphenylene dendrimers is presented. Following this method, polyphenylene dendrimers decorated with an increasing number of chromophores at the periphery have been obtained up to the second generation. Especially the synthesis of a polyphenylene dendrimer bearing three donor chromophores and one acceptor chromophore has been realized. Intramolecular energy transfer within this molecule is demonstrated by applying absorption and fluorescence measurements.  相似文献

Nonconjugated dendrimers, which are capable of funneling energy from the periphery to the core followed by a charge-transfer process from the core to the periphery, have been synthesized. The energy and electron donors involve a diarylaminopyrene unit and are incorporated at the periphery of these dendrimers. The energy and electron acceptor is at the core of the dendrimer, which involves a chromophore based on a benzthiadiazole moiety. The backbone of the dendrimers is benzyl ether based. A direct electron-transfer quenching of the excited state of the periphery or a sequential energy transfer-electron-transfer pathway are the two limiting mechanisms of the observed photophysical properties. We find that the latter mechanism is prevalent in these dendrimers. The energy transfer occurs on a picosecond time scale, while the charge-transfer process occurs on a nanosecond time scale. The lifetime of the charge separated species was found to be in the range of microseconds. Energy transfer efficiencies ranging from 80% to 90% were determined using both steady-state and time-resolved measurements, while charge-transfer efficiencies ranging from 70% to 80% were deduced from fluorescence quenching of the core chromophore. The dependence of the energy and charge-transfer processes on dendrimer generation is analyzed in terms of the backfolding of the flexible benzyl ether backbone, which leads to a weaker dependence of the energy and charge-transfer efficiencies on dendrimer size than would be expected for a rigid system.  相似文献

Femtosecond fluorescence anisotropy measurements for a variety of cyclic porphyrin arrays such as Zn(II)porphyrin m-trimer and hexamer are reported along with o-dimer and monomer as reference molecules. In the porphyrin arrays, a pair of porphyrin moieties are joined together via triphenyl linkage to ensure cyclic and rigid structures. Anisotropy decay times of the porphyrin arrays can be well described by the F?rster incoherent excitation hopping process between the porphyrin units. Exciton coupling strengths of 74 and 264 cm(-1) for the m-trimer and hexamer estimated from the observed excitation energy hopping rates are close to those of B800 and B850, respectively, in the LH2 bacterial light-harvesting antenna. Thus, these cyclic porphyrin array systems have proven to be useful in understanding energy migration processes in a relatively weak interaction regime in light of the similarity in overall structures and constituent chromophores to natural light-harvesting arrays.  相似文献

We report on two multi-chromophore building blocks that self-assemble in solution and on surfaces into supramolecular light-harvesting arrays. Each building block is based on perylene-3,4:9,10-bis(dicarboximide) (PDI) chromophores. In one building block, N-phenyl PDI chromophores are attached at their para positions to both nitrogens and the 3 and 6 carbons of pyromellitimide to form a cross-shaped molecule (PI-PDI(4)). In the second building block, N-phenyl PDI chromophores are attached at their para positions to both nitrogens and the 1 and 7 carbons of a fifth PDI to produce a saddle-shaped molecule (PDI(5)). These molecules self-assemble into partially ordered dimeric structures (PI-PDI(4))(2) and (PDI(5))(2) in toluene and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran solutions with the PDI molecules approximately parallel to one another primarily due to pi-pi interactions between adjacent PDI chromophores. On hydrophobic surfaces, PDI(5) grows into rod-shaped nanostructures of average length 130 nm as revealed by atomic force microscopy. Photoexcitation of these supramolecular dimers in solution gives direct evidence of strong pi-pi interactions between the excited PDI chromophore and other PDI molecules nearby based on the observed formation of an excimer-like state in <130 fs with a lifetime of about 20 ns. Multiple photoexcitations of the supramolecular dimers lead to fast singlet-singlet annihilation of the excimer-like state, which occurs with exciton hopping times of about 5 ps, which are comparable to those observed in photosynthetic light-harvesting proteins from green plants.  相似文献

The photophysics of a dendrimer containing four chromophores are investigated at the single-molecule level. First, the multichromophoric character of single dendrimers' absorption is probed by modulating the linear polarization of the excitation beam. Subsequently, using circular polarization, the same dendrimers are excited, and their fluorescence transients are recorded. Using pulsed excitation in combination with the classical Hanbury-Brown and Twiss coincidence setup the presented data demonstrate that efficient singlet-singlet annihilation ensures that always only one photon is emitted even when several excitations are generated in an individual multichromophoric molecule.  相似文献

[reaction: see text] A divergent synthesis of internally functionalized dendrimers based on a modular functional monomer has been developed. This strategy was applied to the construction of a light-harvesting dendrimer containing one set of naphthopyranone dyes located at the interior and another set of coumarin chromophores located in the adjacent outer layer surrounding a porphyrin acceptor. Quantitative energy transfer from both donor pigments is observed, giving rise to exclusive emission from the porphyrin core over all excitation wavelengths.  相似文献

Complexation of Zn(II) ions by cyclam cored dendrimers appended with four (G0), eight (G1) and 16 naphthyl chromophores (G2) at the periphery have been investigated in CH?CN-CH?Cl? 1?:?1 (v/v) solution by absorption and emission, ESI-mass and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The results obtained can be interpreted by the formation of complexes of 2?:?1 dendrimer to metal stoichiometry, at low metal ion concentration, and 1?:?1 complexes upon further addition of Zn(II) ions, for all the dendrimer generations. Upon addition of a molecular clip C2? consisting of two anthracene sidewalls bridged by a benzene group with two sulfate substituents in the para positions, heteroleptic complexes of general formula [GnZnC] are formed. Interestingly, in these complexes, a very efficient quenching (practically 100%) of the dendrimer naphthyl luminescence and sensitization (ca. 90%) of the clip anthracene emission take place. The complex [G2ZnC] exhibits a very high molar absorption coefficient in the UV spectral region owing to the 16 naphthyl chromophores of the dendrimer and the two anthracene units of the clip (ε = 1.7 × 10? M?1 cm?1 at 263 nm). Furthermore, the excitation energy absorbed by the naphthyl chromophores is efficiently funneled to the two anthracene units of the clip, which emits in the blue spectral region.

A series of benzophenone chromospheres and zinc(II) phthalocyanine dichromophores labeled poly (aryl benzyl ether) dendrimer (Gn-DZnPc(BP)8n, n = 1?2) were synthesized. Their structures were characterized by elemental analysis, 1H NMR, IR, UV–vis and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Their photophysical properties were examined by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence methods. Both the poly (aryl benzyl ether) dendrimer and BP terminal chromophores had a significant effect on photophysical properties of the zinc(II) phthalocyanine core. Time-resolved spectroscopic measurements indicated that the lifetime of benzophenone (donor) chromophore was longer than that of the zinc(II) phthalocyanine (acceptor). The fluorescence of the peripheral benzophenone chromophores was quenched by the phthalocyanine group attached to the focal point. All of these observations suggest that an intramolecular singlet energy transfer occurs in Gn-DZnPc(BP)8n molecules. The light-harvesting abilities of these molecules increased with generations due to an increase in the number of benzophenone chromophores. The energy transfer efficiencies were ca. 0.49 and 0.68 for generations 1 and 2, respectively, and the rate constants of the singlet-singlet energy transfer were ca. 108 s?1. The rate constants changed inconspicuously with increase of dendron generations. The intramolecular singlet-singlet energy transfer is proposed to proceed mainly via a Förster-type interaction mechanism involving the dendrimer backbone as a scaffold to hold the peripheral benzophenone chromophores and the phthalocyanine core together. This dendrimer was an effective new energy transmission complex with high efficiency and could be used as a potential light-harvesting system.  相似文献

Intramolecular F?rster-type excitation energy transfer (FRET) processes in a series of first-generation polyphenylene dendrimers substituted with spatially well-separated peryleneimide chromophores and a terryleneimide energy-trapping chromophore at the rim were investigated by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Energy-hopping processes among the peryleneimide chromophores are revealed by anisotropy decay times of 50--80 ps consistent with a FRET rate constant of k(hopp) = 4.6 ns(-1). If a terryleneimide chromophore is present at the rim of the dendrimer together with three peryleneimide chromophores, more than 95% of the energy harvested by the peryleneimide chromophores is transferred and trapped in the terryleneimide. The two decay times (tau(1) = 52 ps and tau(2) = 175 ps) found for the peryleneimide emission band are recovered as rise times at the terryleneimide emission band proving that the energy trapping of peryleneimide excitation energy by the terryleneimide acceptor occurs via two different, efficient pathways. Molecular- modeling-based structures tentatively indicate that the rotation of the terryleneimide acceptor group can lead to a much smaller distance to a single donor chromophore, which could explain the occurrence of two energy-trapping rate constants. All energy-transfer processes are quantitatively describable with F?rster energy transfer theory, and the influence of the dipole orientation factor in the F?rster equation is discussed.  相似文献

Two rotaxanes with benzyl ether axles and tetralactam wheels were synthesized through an anion template effect. They carry naphthalene chromophores attached to the stopper groups and a pyrene chromophore attached to the wheel. The difference between the two rotaxanes is represented by the connecting unit of the naphthyl chromophore to the rotaxane axle: a triazole or an alkynyl group. Both rotaxanes exhibit excellent light-harvesting properties: excitation of the naphthalene chromophores is followed by energy transfer to the pyrene unit with efficiency higher than 90% in both cases. This represents an example of light-harvesting function among chromophores belonging to mechanically interlocked components, that is, the axle and the wheel of the rotaxanes.  相似文献

A new class of pi-conjugated dendrimers G0, G1, and G2 was developed through a double-stage divergent/convergent growth approach, in which 5,5,10,10,15,15-hexahexyltruxene was employed as the node and oligo(thienylethynylene)s (OTEs) with different lengths as the branching moieties. The dendrimers were fully characterized by (1)H and (13)C NMR, elemental analysis, gel permeation chromatography, and MALDI-TOF MS. Also, by using atomic force microscopy, it was observed that dendrimer G2 laid nearly flat on the mica surface as a single molecule. Dynamic light scattering results showed that the molecule retained its relatively flat shape in solution. To our best knowledge, dendrimer G2, with a radius approaching 10 nm and a molecular weight of 27 072 Da, was the largest among reported second generation dendrimers. The energy gradient in G2 was constructed by linking OTEs of increasing effective conjugation lengths from the dendritic rim to the core. The intramolecular energy transfer process was studied using steady-state UV-vis absorption and photoluminescent spectroscopies, as well as time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Our structurally extended dendrimers showed an excellent energy funneling ability (their energy transfer efficiencies were all over 95%). All results demonstrate that these dendrimers are promising candidates as light-harvesting materials for optoelectronic devices.  相似文献

We describe the synthesis, electrochemical, and photophysical properties of two new luminescent Ru(II) diimine complexes covalently attached to one and three 4-piperidinyl-1,8-naphthalimide (PNI) chromophores, [Ru(bpy)(2)(PNI-phen)](PF(6))(2) and [Ru(PNI-phen)(3)](PF(6))(2), respectively. These compounds represent a new class of visible light-harvesting Ru(II) chromophores that exhibit greatly enhanced room-temperature metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) emission lifetimes as a result of intervening intraligand triplet states ((3)IL) present on the pendant naphthalimide chromophore(s). In both Ru(II) complexes, the intense singlet fluorescence of the pendant PNI chromophore(s) is nearly quantitatively quenched and was found to sensitize the MLCT-based photoluminescence. Excitation into either the (1)IL or (1)MLCT absorption bands results in the formation of both (3)MLCT and (3)IL excited states, conveniently monitored by transient absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The relative energy ordering of these triplet states was determined using time-resolved emission spectra at 77 K in an EtOH/MeOH glass where dual emission from both Ru(II) complexes was observed. Here, the shorter-lived higher energy emission has a spectral profile consistent with that typically observed from (3)MLCT excited states, whereas the millisecond lifetime lower energy band was attributed to (3)IL phosphorescence of the PNI chromophore. At room temperature the data are consistent with an excited-state equilibrium between the higher energy (3)MLCT states and the lower energy (3)PNI states. Both complexes display MLCT-based emission with room-temperature lifetimes that range from 16 to 115 micros depending upon solvent and the number of PNI chromophores present. At 77 K it is apparent that the two triplet states are no longer in thermal equilibrium and independently decay to the ground state.  相似文献

To elucidate the dependence of the nonlinear optical (NLO) response on the conformation of triply branched derivatives, a new series of D-pi-A dendrimers has been synthesized. A combined approach of experiments (UV-vis and EOA measurements) and computational predictions (semiempirical and ab initio) was applied both on the dendrimers and on the corresponding single-strand chromophores. It has been shown that depending on the surrounding media the NLO activity of a flexible dendrimer can be very different. Two limiting cases are proposed: (i) the dendrimer resembles a solution of the corresponding single-strand chromophores with about 3-fold concentration, where the hyperpolarizability is the sum of the effect of three noninteracting single-strand subunits ("independent chromophores" limit); (ii) the dendrimers show nearly parallel or helical alignments of the single-strand subunits. Because of this change of conformation the NLO activity can be enhanced up to nine times the value of the "independent chromophores" limit and, thus, are more than a single strand chromophore. Conformers of dendrimers with interacting single-strand chromophores have been identified experimentally in nonpolar solutions by the EOA spectroscopy and possible structures have been revealed by numerical calculations, which could moreover show the tendency of the effects on the hyperpolarizability due to structural changes of the flexible dendritic architecture. Implications for future research developments are given to implement the "more than three times" concept.  相似文献

Modeling the multistep flow of energy in light-harvesting dendrimers presents a considerable challenge. Recent studies have introduced an operator approach based on a matrix representation of the connectivity between constituent chromophores. Following a review of the theory, detailed applications are now shown to exhibit the time development of the core excitation following pulsed laser irradiation and the steady-state behavior that can be expected under conditions of constant illumination. It is also shown how energy capture by whole dendrimers can be analytically related to chromophore pair-transfer properties and, in particular, the spectroscopic gradient toward the core. Indicative calculations also illustrate the consequences of tertiary folding. In each respect, the model affords opportunities to derive new, physically meaningful information on the photophysical and structural features of dendrimeric systems.  相似文献

A bis-intercalating compound containing pyrene and 9-aminoacridine chromophores (N-(5-(1-pyrenyl)-pentyl)-6-(9-acridinylamino) hexylamide, I), was prepared and its interaction with double-stranded DNA was investigated. Homologous compounds in which the two chromophores were connected by a linear carbon chain (pentamethylene (II), tetramethylene (III) and methylene (IV)) were also prepared. In acetonitrile solutions of the free ligands, the presence of the proximal pyrene results in reduced acridine fluorescence relative to 9methylaminoacridine (9-MAA), and the degree of quenching increases with decreasing chain length. The quenching process is assigned to exothermic electron transfer from pyrene to the excited 9-aminoacridine (9-AA) chromophore. In the presence of DNA, the relative quenching order is reversed, and I and IV are quenched more strongly than II and III. From linear dichroism experiments, it is concluded that I binds by bis-intercalation of the pyrene and acridine moieties, III and IV undergo intercalation of the acridine chromophore and II binds by partial bis-intercalation at two contiguous sites.  相似文献

Near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) has been used to investigate the photophysical characteristics of first- to fourth-generation (G1 to G4) light-harvesting dendrimer thin films containing coumarin-343 and coumarin-2 as the core and peripheral chromophores, respectively. Thin film photoluminescence (PL) spectra exhibit a significant red shift in the lower generations (G1, G2, and G3) as compared to their respective solution PL spectra, implying the formation of excimers. Spatially resolved PL NSOM images exhibit pronounced nanoscopic domains in G1, which become more homogeneous in higher generations due to site-isolation of the core chromophore. G4 exhibits complete site-isolation for these light-harvesting dendrimer films.  相似文献
