Study of two-phase flows in reduced gravity using ground based experiments   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Experimental studies have been carried out to support the development of a framework of the two-fluid model along with an interfacial area transport equation applicable to reduced gravity two-phase flows. The experimental study simulates the reduced gravity condition in ground based facilities by using two immiscible liquids of similar density namely, water as the continuous phase and Therminol 59® as the dispersed phase. We have acquired a total of eleven data sets in the bubbly flow and bubbly to slug flow transition regimes. These flow conditions have area-averaged void (volume) fractions ranging from 3 to 30% and channel Reynolds number for the continuous phase between 2,900 and 8,800. Flow visualization has been performed and a flow regime map developed which is compared with relevant bubbly to slug flow regime transition criteria. The comparison shows that the transition boundary is well predicted by the criterion based on critical void fraction. The value of the critical void fraction at transition was experimentally determined to be approximately 25%. In addition, important two-phase flow local parameters, including the void fraction, interfacial area concentration, droplet number frequency and droplet velocity, have been acquired at two axial locations using state-of-the-art multi-sensor conductivity probe. The radial profiles and axial development of the two-phase flow parameters show that the coalescence mechanism is enhanced by either increasing the continuous or dispersed phase Reynolds number. Evidence of turbulence induced particle interaction mechanism is highlighted. The data presented in this paper clearly show the marked differences in terms of bubble (droplet) size, phase distribution and phase interaction in two-phase flow between normal and reduced gravity conditions.  相似文献

Transition of plug to slug flow is associated with bubble detachment from elongated bubble tail or bubble entrainment inside the liquid slug. The mechanism responsible for this transition was earlier identified by Ruder and Hanratty (1990) and Fagundes Netto et al. (1999) based on the shape of the hydraulic jump observed at elongated bubble tail region. The transition mechanism reported by Ruder and Hanratty (1990) and Fagundes Netto et al. (1999) was only based on their flow visualization study. Plug to slug transition and associated dynamics of bubble detachment from the elongated bubble is analysed in the present paper using flow visualization and local velocity measurements. Experiments are reported for 13 different inlet flow conditions of air and water phases. Images of plug/slug flow structures are captured at a rate of 4000 FPS using FASTCAM Photron camera and the local values of axial liquid velocity are measured using LDV system synchronised with a 3D automated traverse system. LDV measurement of local liquid velocity in the liquid slug and liquid film establishes the reason for detachment of bubbles from the slug bubble tail.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to improve the current phenomenological understanding of slug flow characteristics over an entire hilly-terrain section, and in particular, the slug initiation mechanism at the lower dip.The experimental part of this study revealed that five possible flow behavior categories exist along a hilly-terrain section. In these categories, the flow behavior at the dip is coupled with flow conditions of the upstream downhill section. This qualitative classification was superimposed on steady-state flow pattern maps for the upstream downhill section in an attempt to relate the qualitative flow behavior at a dip to the flow pattern maps through the flow behavior in the downhill section.Statistical analyses of mean slug length, maximum slug length, slug frequency, and slug length variation across the hilly-terrain pipeline revealed that slug length distribution characteristics change across a symmetrical hilly-terrain pipeline. Physical modeling of the slug initiation mechanism and the characteristics of initiated slugs at the lower dip indicated two main mechanisms, namely, wave growth and wave coalescence initiation mechanisms. The initiated “pseudo slugs” or slug characteristics of each mechanism differ significantly with respect to frequency, length, liquid holdup and velocity. It was observed that pseudo slugs initiated by the wave coalescence mechanism have velocities less than the mixture velocity due to gas blowing through the slug body.  相似文献

An experimental study on the interaction between Taylor bubbles rising through a co-current flowing liquid in a vertical tube with 32 mm of internal diameter is reported. The flow pattern in the bubble's wake was turbulent and the flow regime in the liquid slug was either turbulent or laminar. When the flow regime in the liquid slug is turbulent (i) the minimum distance between bubbles above which there is no interaction is 5D-6D; (ii) the bubble's rising velocity is in excellent agreement with the Nicklin relation; (iii) the experimental values of the bubble length compare well with theoretical predictions (Barnea 1990); (iv) the distance between consecutive bubbles varied from 13D to 16D and is insensitive to the liquid Reynolds number. When the flow regime in the liquid slug is laminar (i) the wake length is about 5D-6D; (ii) the minimum distance between bubbles above which there is no interaction is higher than 25D; (iii) the bubble's rising velocity is significantly smaller than theoretical predictions. These results were explained in the light of the findings of Pinto et al. (1998) on coalescence of two Taylor bubbles rising through a co-current liquid. In order to properly design and safely operate two-phase flow systems, especially those deployed on future space missions, it is necessary to have accurate predictive capabilities. The application of a novel predictive method, the interfacial area transport equation (IATE), to dynamically predict the change of interfacial area concentration for reduced-gravity two-phase flows is described in this paper. Fluid particle interaction mechanisms such as coalescence and breakup that are present in reduced-gravity two-phase flows have been studied experimentally as reported in a previous paper by the current authors [Vasavada et al., 2007]. These mechanisms represent the source and sink terms in the IATE and their mechanistic models are benchmarked using experimental data obtained in a 25 mm inner diameter ground-based test section wherein reduced-gravity conditions were simulated. The comparison of the predictions from the model against experimental data shows good agreement. It has been found that, in contrast to the hypothesis extended in the literature, the wake entrainment based coalescence mechanism is present in reduced-gravity two-phase flows and in some cases is more important than coalescence due to random collision. Physics based arguments are extended to support this conclusion.  相似文献

Air-water numerical simulations in the slug flow regime have been performed in horizontal helical pipes and the effects of geometries on the flow regime have been investigated. Depending on the length of the helix, outlet slug frequencies have been reduced with various degrees of efficiency. Correlations between mean tangential velocity and helicity density fluctuations have been identified and investigated qualitatively. These flow fields show smaller time scales than those obtained in volume fractions fluctuations. Shifts observed in the tangential velocity and mean helicity fluctuations to smaller time scales (high frequencies) are associated with regime transitions. For a slug flow undergoing a continuous transition to the annular flow regime, it is shown that the presence of slower (low frequencies) helicity fluctuations is attributed to the variations in the axial velocity. Finally, the analysis of the helicity at gas-liquid interface confirms the presence of the mixing zone at the slug front.  相似文献

In many two-phase flow situations the prediction on the conditions likely to instigate the change of flow pattern from the stratified regime to the slug flow condition is important. Since published material on such predictions for countercurrent flow is scarce this paper considers the influencing parameters for these conditions and then uses the data recorded from an experimental test rig to quantify the developed instability criterion equation.  相似文献

An experiment was performed to examine the mechanism of flow pattern transition from bubble flow to slug flow in a riser. The flow was measured by a double resistivity probe system, and photographs of the flow were taken using strobe lights. The negative diffusion distance of bubbles was estimated using a voidage wave equation and compared with the interbubble distance. The flow pattern transition from bubble flow to slug flow occurred when the diffusion distance was larger than the interbubble distance. Conversely, when the diffusion distance was smaller than the interbubble distance, the bubble flow was sustained. Therefore, it is found that the negative diffusion caused by the instability of the voidage wave brings about the flow pattern transition.  相似文献

Severe slugging is a dynamic two-phase flow phenomenon with regular liquid accumulation and blow-out in flow-line riser geometries. This paper discusses the applicability of a slug tracking model on a case where hydrodynamic slug initiation in a horizontal part of the pipeline upstream the riser base affects the severe slugging cycle period. The given experimental case is from the Shell laboratories in Amsterdam: air–water flow in a 100 m long pipe (65 m horizontal and 35 m −2.54° downwards) followed by a 15 m long vertical riser.A Lagrangian slug and bubble tracking model is described. A two-fluid model is applied in the bubble region and the slug region is treated as incompressible flow, with an integral momentum equation. Slug initiation from unstable stratified flow can be captured directly by solving the two-fluid model on a fine grid (a hybrid capturing and tracking scheme). Alternatively, slug initiation can be made from sub grid models, allowing for larger grid sizes. The sub grid models are based on the two established flow regime transition criteria derived from the stability of stratified flow and from the limiting solution of the unit cell slug flow model.Sensitivity studies on hydrodynamic slug initiation models on the severe slugging characteristics are presented. No hydrodynamic slug initiation (e.g. large grid size in the capturing scheme) overestimates the severe slug period compared with the experiments. Slug capturing and sub grid initiation models both give good predictions for small grid sizes (provided the detailed inlet configuration is included in the capturing case). Good predictions are also shown for larger grid sizes (factor of 50) and sub grid initiation models. The numerical tests show that correct prediction of the severe slugging cycle is sensitive to the initiation of upstream hydrodynamic slugs, but less sensitive to the local structure of the slug flow (frequencies and lengths) in the upstream region.  相似文献

Results are presented for the initiation of slug-type structures from stratified 2D, two-layer pressure-driven channel flow. Good agreement is obtained with an Orr–Sommerfeld-type stability analysis for the growth rate and wave speed of very small disturbances. The numerical results elucidate the non-linear evolution of the interface shape once small disturbances have grown substantially. It is shown that relatively short waves (which are the most unstable according to linear theory) saturate when the length of the periodic domain is equally short. In longer domains, coalescence of short waves of small-amplitude is shown to lead to large-amplitude long waves, which subsequently exhibit a tendency towards slug formation. The non-uniform distribution of the interfacial shear stress is shown to be a significant mechanism for wave growth in the non-linear regime.  相似文献

At present there is significant interest in the development of small scale medical diagnostic equipment. These devices offer faster processing times and require smaller sample volumes than equivalent macro scale systems. Although significant attention has been focused upon their outputs, little attention has been devoted to the detailed fluid mechanics that govern the flow mechanisms within these devices. Conventionally, the samples in these small scale devices are segmented into distinct discrete droplets or slugs which are suspended in an organic carrier phase. Separating these slugs from the channel wall is a very thin film of the organic carrier phase. The magnitude of this film is the focus of the present study and the effects of sample slug length and carrier phase fluidic properties on the film are examined over a range of Capillary numbers. A non-intrusive optical technique was used to capture images of the flow from which the magnitude of the film was determined. The experimental results show that the film is not constant along the length of the slug; however above a threshold value for slug length, a region of constant film thickness exists. When compared with existing correlations in the literature, the experimental data showed reasonable agreement with the Bretherton model when the Capillary number was calculated based on the mean two phase flow velocity. However, significant differences were observed when the Capillary number was redefined to account for the mean velocity at the liquid interface, i.e., the mean slug velocity.Analysis of the experimental data revealed that it fell into two distinct flow regimes; a visco-capillary regime and a visco-inertial regime. A modified Taylor expression is presented to estimate the magnitude of the film for flows in the visco-capillary regime while a new model is put forward, based on Capillary and Weber numbers, for flows in the visco-inertial regime. Overall, this study provides some novel insights into parameters, such as aqueous slug length and carrier phase fluidic properties, that affect the thickness of the film in liquid–liquid slug flow regimes.  相似文献

Flow regime transition criteria are of practical importance for two-phase flow analyses at reduced gravity conditions. Here, flow regime transition criteria which take the frictional pressure loss effect into account were studied in detail. Criteria at reduced gravity conditions were developed by extending an existing model from normal gravity to reduced gravity conditions. A comparison of the newly developed flow regime transition criteria model with various experimental datasets taken at microgravity conditions showed satisfactory agreement. Sample computations of the model were performed at various gravity conditions, such as 0.196, 1.62, 3.71 and 9.81 m/s2 corresponding to micro-gravity and lunar, Martian and Earth surface gravity, respectively. It was found that the effect of gravity on bubbly–slug and slug–annular (churn) transitions in a two-phase flow system was more pronounced at low liquid flow conditions, whereas the gravity effect could be ignored at high mixture volumetric flux conditions. While for the annular flow transitions due to flow reversal and onset of droplet entrainment, higher superficial gas velocity was obtained at higher gravity level.  相似文献

The structure of vertical upward slug flow in a pipe is studied. The distribution of the phases in the Taylor bubble zone and the liquid slug zone is investigated by simultaneous measurements with two optical fiber probes. In the Taylor bubble zone the shape of the Taylor bubble and the distribution of the bubble length is reported. In the liquid slug region, the distribution of the void fraction is obtained over a dense grid in both the axial and radial directions. These experimental results shed some light on the hydrodynamics of the two-phase slug flow, in particular regarding the production of the dispersed bubbles and their distribution along the liquid slug.  相似文献

In this work, we present a numerical study to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of slug flow and the mechanism of slug flow induced CO2 corrosion with and without dispersed small bubbles. The simulations are performed using the coupled model put forward by the authors in previous paper, which can deal with the multiphase flow with the gas–liquid interfaces of different length scales. A quasi slug flow, where two hypotheses are imposed, is built to approximate real slug flow. In the region ahead of the Taylor bubble and the liquid film region, the presence of dispersed small bubbles has less impacts on velocity field, because there are no non-regular intensive disturbance forces or centrifugal forces breaking the balance of the liquid and the dispersed small bubbles. In the liquid slug region, the strong centrifugal forces generated by the recirculation below the Taylor bubble lead to the effect of heterogeneity, which makes the profile of the radial liquid velocity component sharper with higher volume fraction of dispersed small bubbles. The volume fraction has a maximum value in the range of r/R = 0.5–0.6. Meanwhile, it is usually higher than 0.35, which means that larger dispersed bubbles can be formed by coalescences in this region. These calculated results are in good agreement with experimental results. The wall shear stress and the mass transfer coefficient with dispersed small bubbles are higher than those without dispersed small bubbles due to enhanced fluctuations. For short Taylor bubble length, the average mass transfer coefficient is increased when the gas or liquid superficial velocity is increased. However, there may be an inflection point at low mixture superficial velocities. For the slug with dispersed small bubbles, the product scales still cannot be damaged directly despite higher wall shear stress. In fact, the alternate wall shear stress and the pressure fluctuations perpendicular to the pipe wall with high frequency are the main cause for breaking the product scales.  相似文献

Steps towards the numerical simulation of the flow behind the slug front in horizontal slug flow performed with a streamfunction-vorticity representation of the mean flow and an energy dissipation model for the turbulence are discussed. The flow field consists of two vortices, one saddle point and four stagnation regions. Attention is focused on the following boundary conditions: moving wall jet, moving wall, free jet velocity discontinuity and vertical liquid-gas open surface. A dissipation flux boundary condition is suggested to simulate the interaction of the turbulent eddies with the open surface. A method to assess the necessity to use a transport model equation for the dissipation rather than a geometric specification of a length is suggested. Three different ways to characterize the mixing zone length are proposed.  相似文献

The flow boiling patterns of liquid nitrogen in a vertical mini-tube with an inner diameter of 1.931 mm are visualized with a high-speed digital camera. The superficial gas and liquid velocities are in the ranges of 0.01–26.5 m/s and 0.01–1.2 m/s, respectively. Four typical flow patterns, namely, bubbly, slug, churn and annular flow are observed. Some interesting scenes about the entrainment and liquid droplet deposition in the churn and annular flow, and the flow reversal with the indication of negative pressure drop, are also presented. Based on the visualization, the two-phase flow regime maps are obtained. Compared with the flow regime maps for gas–water flow in tubes with similar hydraulic diameters, the region of slug flow in the present study reduces significantly. Correspondingly, the transition boundary from the bubbly flow to slug flow shifts to higher superficial gas velocity, and that of churn to annular flow moves to lower superficial gas velocity. Moreover, time-averaged void fraction is calculated by quantitative image-digitizing technique and compared with various prediction models. Finally, three kinds of oscillations with long-period and large-amplitude are found, possible explanation for the oscillations is given by comparing the instantaneous flow images with the data of pressure, mass flux and temperature recorded synchronously.  相似文献

In this work, a new flow regime transition model is proposed for two-phase flows in a vertical annulus. Following previous works, the flow regimes considered are bubbly (B), slug (S) or cap-slug (CS), churn (C) and annular (A). The B to CS transition is modeled using the maximum bubble package criteria of small bubbles. The S to C transition takes place for small annulus perimeter flow channels and it is assumed to occur when the mean void fraction over the entire region exceeds that over the slug–bubble section. If the annulus perimeter is larger that the distorted bubble limit the cap-slug flow regime will be considered since in these conditions it is not possible to distinguish between cap and partial-slug bubbles. The CS to C transition is modeled using the maximum bubble package criteria. However, this transition considers the coalescence of cap and spherical bubbles in order to take into account the flow channel geometry. Finally, the C to A transition is modeled assuming two different mechanisms, (a) flow reversal in the liquid film section along large bubbles; (b) destruction on liquid slugs or large waves by entrainment or deformation. In the S to C and C to A flow regime transitions the annulus flow channel is considered as a rectangular flow channel with no side walls. In all the modeled transitions the drift-flux model is used to obtain the final correlations. The final equations for every flow regime transition are easy to be implemented in computational codes and not experimental input is needed. The prediction accuracy of the newly developed model has been checked against air–water as well as boiling flow regime maps. In all the cases, the new developed model shows better predicting capabilities than the existing correlations most used in literature.  相似文献

Current models for pressure drop prediction of slug flow pneumatic conveying in a horizontal pipeline system assume some type of steady state conditions for prediction, which limits their capability for increased predictive accuracy relative to experimental data. This is partly because of the nature of slug flow pneumatic conveying system, which,as a dynamic system, never becomes stable.By utilising conservation of mass (airflow),a dynamic pressure analysis model is proposed on the basis of the derivative of the upstream pressure behaviour. The rate of air permeation through slug, one of the important factors in the conservation model,is expressed as a function of a slug permeability factor.Other factors such as slug velocity, slug length and the fraction of stationary layer were also considered.Several test materials were conveyed in single-slug tests to verify the proposed pressure drop model, showing good agreement between the model and experimental results.  相似文献

The void fraction and the pressure waves in an air–water mixture flowing in the slug regime are experimentally investigated in a horizontal line. The test section is made of a transparent Plexiglas pipe with 26 mm ID and 26.24 m long, operating at ambient temperature and pressure. The flow induced transients are made by quickly changing the air or the water inlet velocity. The test grid has four operational points. This choice allows one to create expansion and compression waves due to the changes to the gas or to the liquid. Each experimental run is repeated 100 times to extract an ensemble average capable of filtering out the intrinsic flow intermittence and disclosing the void fraction and pressure waves’ features. The slug flow properties such as the bubble nose translational velocity, the lengths of liquid film underneath the bubble and the liquid slug are also measured. The objective of the work is two-fold: access the main characteristics of the void fraction and pressure waves and disclose the mechanics of the transient slug flow as described through the changes of the slug flow properties.  相似文献
