Adiabatic potential curves for the ground state and several low-lying excited states of the barium atom interacting with Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe have been obtained from valence ab initio configuration-interaction calculations. Atomic cores are replaced by scalar-relativistic l-dependent pseudopotentials, while core-polarization potentials are used for describing correlation contributions of the rare-gas atoms and the Ba2+ cores. Implications of the resulting potential curves for the interpretation of experimental data are discussed, together with first applications of the curves for calculating absorption profiles of the (6s 2)1S→(6p)1P Ba transition. Several zerovalent lanthanide bis(arene)-sandwich complexes, Ln(η6-C6H6)2, Ln = La, Ce, Eu, Gd and Lu, have been studied by means of density functional theory. The calculated geometries are in good agreement with experiment. The calculated dissociation energies of the bond Ln-(η6-C6H6) may be considerably underestimated, but they correctly reveal the variation regularity. The bonding in these molecules can be described in terms of a relatively weak π-electron donation from benzene to Ln and a stronger electron back-donation from Ln 5d to the benzene π* orbitals. During bond formation, there is electron promotion from Ln 6s to 5d instead of from 4f to 5d, in opposition to the proposal of Anderson et al. The relativistic effect only slightly influences the molecular geometry, but decreases the bonding energy considerably through lowering the Ln 6s level and raising the 5d level. B3LYP/6-31G* calculations on bis-periazulene (cyclohepta[def]-fluorene) predict a triplet ground state for this molecule. The singlet has an aromatic 14π-electron periphery but is 2 kcal/mol higher in energy. The results agree with earlier predictions by Heilbronner. The accuracy of employing effective core polarization potentials (CPPs) to account for the effects of core-valence correlation on the spectroscopic constants and dissociation energies of the molecules B2, C2, N2, O2, F2, CO, CN, CH, HF, and C2H2 has been investigated by comparison to accurate all-electron benchmark calculations. The results obtained from the calculations employing CPPs were surprisingly accurate in every case studied, reducing the errors in the calculated valence D e values from a maximum of nearly 2.5 kcal/mol to just 0.3 kcal/mol. The effects of enlarging the basis set and using higher-order valence electron correlation treatments were found to have only a small influence on the core-valence correlation effect predicted by the CPPs. Thus, to accurately recover the effects of intershell correlation, effective core polarization potentials such as the ones used in the present work provide an attractive alternative to carrying out computationally demanding calculations where the core electrons are explicitly included in the correlation treatment.  The electronic structures of complexes of terpyridine (tpy) with trivalent lanthanides (Ln) were calculated using ab initio methods with effective core potentials at Hartree–Fock and post-Hartree–Fock levels of theory. The quasirelativistic large-core (with 4f electrons included in the core) pseudopotentials of the Stuttgart group were chosen for the Ln atoms. The variation of several properties of the Ln(tpy)3+ complexes was studied for the whole Ln series. It was shown that there was a monotonous variation for all properties (geometrical and energetic) along the Ln series, except for Mulliken charges on the metal atom. Calculations were performed on three complexes of known solid-state structure. The difference between experimental and calculated geometries is discussed; for all structures, it is found to be lower than 0.2 ?. High-resolution energy spectra of electrons released in Penning ionization collisions of metastable rare gas atoms Rg*(ns) (Rg = He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe) with several open-shell and closed-shell atoms are analyzed to determine the well depth of the potential energy curve which describes the respective autoionizing collision complex. We thereby elucidate trends in the chemical interaction of Rg* with closed-shell target atoms A(ns 2) and establish a basis for detailed comparison with the respective interactions involving open-shell, ground state alkali atoms A(ns). From electron energy spectra due to␣associative ionization (RgH+ formation) in Rg* + H(1s) collisions, we determine binding energies for the RgH+(1Σ) ground state potential (Rg = Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe) with uncertainties around 0.03 eV. The mechanism of ethylene epoxidation on Ag surfaces has been investigated using the density functional method and Ag n clusters (n = 3 to 10) modeling the Ag(111) surface. The adsorption energy of O2 to the Ag clusters was strongly dependent on the HOMO level of the cluster, and the clusters with higher HOMO levels afforded larger O2 adsorption energies. The energetics was investigated for both the molecular and atomic oxygen epoxidation mechanisms. For the atomic oxygen mechanism, epoxidation was found to proceed without an activation energy, whereas a small amount of activation energy (about 5 kcal/mol) was calculated for the molecular oxygen mechanism. Quasirelativistic energy-consistent 5f-in-core pseudopotentials modeling divalent (5f n+1 occupation with n = 5–13 for Pu–No) respectively tetravalent (5f n-1 occupation with n = 1–9 for Th–Cf) actinides together with corresponding core-polarization potentials have been generated. Energy-optimized (6s5p4d) and (7s6p5d) valence basis sets as well as 2f1g correlation functions have been derived and contracted to polarized double, triple, and quadruple zeta quality. Corresponding smaller (4s4p) and (5s5p) respectively (4s4p3d) and (5s5p4d) basis sets suitable for calculations on actinide(II) respectively actinide(IV) ions in crystalline solids form subsets of these basis sets designed for calculations on molecules. Results of Hartree–Fock test calculations for actinide di- and tetrafluorides show a satisfactory agreement with calculations using 5f-in-valence pseudopotentials. The valence ionization spectrum of HCl is studied by symmetry-adapted-cluster configuration-interaction general-R and SD-R methods. The general-R method describes well the peak positions and intensities of seven satellite lines observed below the double ionization threshold. The twinning shake-up states due to the (4σ)−1 state and the Rydberg states of HCl+ are correctly reproduced. The electron affinities of the Sc and Ti atoms have been obtained by configuration interaction calculations. Energy convergence with respect to the systematic expansion of both the one-electron basis set and the configuration space was investigated for valence electrons, and the inclusion of correlation contributions from core electrons and relativistic effects gave the electron affinities of 0.181 eV and 0.163 eV for Sc and Ti, respectively. These are in excellent agreement with the observed values of 0.189 ± 0.020 eV and 0.080 eV. The same approach was applied for the first excited states and positive ions of both atoms. The results of large-scale valence ab initio calculations of the potential-energy curves for the ground states and several excited states of Cd–rare gas (RG) van der Waals molecules are reported. In the calculations, Cd20+ and RG8+ cores are simulated by energy-consistent pseudopotentials, which also account for scalar-relativistic effects and spin-orbit interaction within the valence shell. The potential energies of the Cd–RG species in the ΛS coupling scheme have been evaluated by means of ab initio complete-active-space multiconfiguration self-consistent-field (CASSCF)/CAS multireference second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2) calculations with a total 28 valence electrons, but the spin-orbit matrix has been computed in a reduced configuration interaction space restricted to the CASSCF level. Finally, the Ω potential curves are obtained by diagonalization of the modified spin-orbit matrix (its diagonal elements before diagonalization substituted by the corresponding CASPT2 eigenenergies). The calculated potential curves, especially the spectroscopic parameters derived for the ground states and several excited states of the Cd–RG species are presented and discussed in the context of available experimental data. Symmetry-adapted perturbation theory is extended to the (quasi) degenerate, open-shell case. The new formalism is tested in calculations of the interaction energies for a helium atom in the ground state interacting with an excited hydrogen atom. It is shown that the method gives satisfactory results if the coupling with higher Rydberg states of the dimer is small, as is the case for the A2Σ+,B2Π,E2Π,32Π, and 12Δ states of HeH. For the C2Σ+ state convergence of the method is very slow, but it can be improved by including the n=3 states in the model space. The repulsive ground electronic state X2Σ+ of HeH is strongly coupled to the Rydberg states at small interatomic distances. Such large couplings also occur between some of the Rydberg states. HeH+ ions that capture an electron in a Rydberg state end up in separated He and H atoms by indirect predissociation. This paper presents a study of potential functions and pertinent matrix elements involving the lowest electronic states: the 2Σ+ states, X, A, C, and D, and the 2Π states B and E. Individual transition rates as well as total radiative and non-radiative lifetimes have been computed for the lowest vibrational and rotational levels. High-level ab initio electronic structure theories have been applied to investigate the detailed reaction mechanism of the spin-forbidden reaction CH(2∏) + N2 → HCN + N(4S). The G2M(RCC) calculations provide accurate energies for the intermediates and transition states involved in the reaction, whereas the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) method overestimates the stability of some intermediates by as much as about 10 kcal/mol. A few new structures have been found for both the doublet and quartet electronic states, which are mainly involved in the dative pathways. However, due to the higher energies of these structures, the dominant mechanism remains the one involving the C 2 intersystem-crossing step. The C 2 minima on the seam of crossing (MSX) structures and the spin-orbit coupling between the doublet and quartet electronic states are rather close to those found in previous studies. Vibrational frequencies orthogonal to the normal of the seam which have been applied in a separate publication to calculate the rate of the CH(2∏) + N2 → HCN + N(4S) reaction with a newly proposed nonadiabatic transition-state theory for spin-forbidden reactions have been calculated at the MSX from first principles. Ab initio calculations on the lowest singlet and triplet states of 2,2-disilylcyclopentane-1,3-diyl find that the singlet lies well below the triplet. The C 2 singlet diradical is calculated to be a minimum on the potential energy surface with an enthalpic barrier to ring closure of ΔH 298 = 13.5 kcal/mol at the CASPT2/6-31G* level of theory. The energy of the 1,3-divinyl-substituted singlet diradical is calculated to be only 0.8 kcal/mol higher than that of 5,5-disilyl-1,3-divinylbicyclo[2.1.0]pentane at this level of theory, but the transition state for their equilibration is computed to be 12.8 kcal/mol above the diradical in energy.  The ground state and several low-lying excited states of the Mg2 dimer have been studied by means of a combination of the complete-active-space multiconfiguration self-consistent-field (CASSCF)/CAS multireference second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2) method and coupled-cluster with single and double excitations and perturbative contribution of connected triple excitations [CCSD(T)] scheme. Reasonably good agreement with experiment has been obtained for the CCSD(T) ground-state potential curve but the dissociation energy of the only experimentally known A1Σ u + excited state of Mg2 is somewhat overestimated at the CASSCF/CASPT2 level. The spectroscopic constants D e, R e and ωe deduced from the calculated potential curves for other states are also reported. In addition, some spin–orbit matrix elements between the excited singlet and triplet states of Mg2 have been evaluated as a function of internuclear separation.
