Direct numerical simulation(DNS) of spatially developing round turbulent jet flow with Reynolds number 4,700 was carried out. Over 20 million grid points were used in this simulation. Fully compressible three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations were solved. High order explicit spatial difference schemes and Runge–Kutta time integration scheme were used to calculate derivatives and time marching, respectively. Non-reflecting boundary conditions and exit zone techniques were adopted. Some refined computational grids were used in order to capture the smallest turbulent structures near the centerline of the jet. Low level disturbance were imposed on the jet inflow velocity to trigger the developing of turbulence. Turbulent statistics such as mean velocity, Reynolds stresses, third order velocity moments were obtained and compared with experimental data. One-dimensional velocity autospectra was also calculated. The inertial region where the spectra decays according to the k − 5/3 was observed. The quantitative profiles of mean velocity and all of the third order velocity moments which were difficult to measure via experimental techniques were presented here in detail. The jet flow was proven to be close to fully self-similar around 19 jet diameters downstream of jet exit. The statistic data and revealed flow feature obtained in this paper can provide valuable reference for round turbulent jet research.  相似文献

Differential and algebraic models are constructed for the dispersed-phase turbulent stresses and heat fluxes and for the mixed moments of the velocity and temperature fluctuations in the continuous and dispersed phases. The models are based on a kinetic equation for the joint probability density of the particle velocity and temperature in an anisotropic turbulent flow. The results are compared with the available direct numerical simulation (DNS) data.  相似文献

Generalized Lattice Boltzmann equation (GLBE) was used for computation of turbulent channel flow for which large eddy simulation (LES) was employed as a turbulence model. The subgrid‐scale turbulence effects were simulated through a shear‐improved Smagorinsky model (SISM), which is capable of predicting turbulent near wall region accurately without any wall function. Computations were done for a relatively coarse grid with shear Reynolds number of 180 in a parallelized code. Good numerical stability was observed for this computational framework. The results of mean velocity distribution across the channel showed good correspondence with direct numerical simulation (DNS) data. Negligible discrepancies were observed between the present computations and those reported from DNS for the computed turbulent statistics. Three‐dimensional instantaneous vorticity contours showed complex vortical structures that appeared in such flow geometries. It was concluded that such a framework is capable of predicting accurate results for turbulent channel flow without adding significant complications and the computational cost to the standard Smagorinsky model. As this modeling was entirely local in space it was therefore adapted for parallelization. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, a three-dimensional filter-matrix lattice Boltzmann (FMLB) model based on large eddy simulation (LES) was verified for simulating wall-bounded turbulent flows. The Vreman subgrid-scale model was employed in the present FMLB–LES framework, which had been proved to be capable of predicting turbulent near-wall region accurately. The fully developed turbulent channel flows were performed at a friction Reynolds number Reτ of 180. The turbulence statistics computed from the present FMLB–LES simulations, including mean stream velocity profile, Reynolds stress profile and root-mean-square velocity fluctuations greed well with the LES results of multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) LB model, and some discrepancies in comparison with those direct numerical simulation (DNS) data of Kim et al. was also observed due to the relatively low grid resolution. Moreover, to investigate the influence of grid resolution on the present LES simulation, a DNS simulation on a finer gird was also implemented by present FMLB–D3Q19 model. Comparisons of detailed computed various turbulence statistics with available benchmark data of DNS showed quite well agreement.  相似文献

Using a priori analyses of direct numerical simulation (DNS) data, a Reynolds stress model (RSM) is developed to account for the influence of polymer additives on turbulent flow over a wide range of flow conditions. The Finitely Extensible Nonlinear Elastic-Peterlin (FENE-P) rheological constitutive model is utilized to evaluate the polymer contribution to the stress tensor. Thirteen DNS data sets are used to analyze the budgets of elastic stress–velocity gradient correlations as well as Reynolds stress and dissipation transport. Closures are developed in the framework of the RSM model for all the required unknown and non-linear terms. The polymer stresses, velocity profiles, turbulent flow statistics and the percentage of friction drag reduction predicted by the RSM model are in good agreement with present and those obtained from independent DNS data over a wide range of rheological and flow parameters.  相似文献

Among the salient features of shear-driven plane Couette flow is the constancy of the total shear stress (viscous and turbulent) across the flow. This constancy gives rise to a quasi-homogenous core region, which makes the bulk of the flow substantially different from pressure-driven Poiseuille flow. The present second-moment closure study addresses the conflicting hypotheses relating to turbulent Couette flow. The inclusion of a new wall-proximity function in the wall-reflection part of the pressure-strain model seems mandatory, and the greement with recent experimental and direct numerical simulation (DNS) results is encouraging. Analysis of model computations in the range 750 ≤ Re ≤ 35,000 and comparisons with low-Re DNS data suggest that plane Couette flow exhibits a local-equilibrium core region, in which anisotropic, homogeneous turbulence prevails. However, the associated variation of the mean velocity in the core, as obtained by the model, conflicts with the intuitively appealing assumption of homogeneous mean shear. The constancy of the velocity gradient exhibited by the DNS therefore signals a deficiency in the modeled transport equation for the energy dissipation rate.  相似文献

Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of spatially developing turbulent mixing layers have been performed for flows of uniform density and Reynolds numbers of up to 50,000 based on the visual thickness of the layer and the velocity difference across it. On a fine LES grid, a validation simulation performed with a hyperbolic tangent inflow profile produces flow statistics that compare extremely well with reference Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) data. An inflow profile derived from laminar Blasius profiles produces a flow that is significantly different to the reference DNS, particularly with respect to the initial development of the flow. When compared with experimental data, however, it is the boundary layer-type inflow simulation produces the better prediction of the flow statistics, including the mean transition location. It is found that the boundary layer inflow condition is more unstable than the hyperbolic tangent inlet profile. A suitably designed coarse LES grid produces good predictions of the mean transition location with boundary layer inflow conditions at a low computational cost. The results suggest that hyperbolic tangent functions may produce unreliable DNS data when used as the initial condition for studies of the transition in the mixing layer flow.  相似文献

An innovative approach which combines high order compact schemes, Immersed Boundary Method and an efficient domain decomposition method is used to perform high fidelity Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of four spatially evolving turbulent flows, one generated by a regular grid and three generated by fractal square grids. The main results which we have been able to obtain from these simulations are the following: the vorticity field appears more clustered when generated by fractal square grids compared to a regular grid; fractal square grids generate higher vorticities and turbulence intensities than a regular grid; the flow holds clear geometrical imprints of the fractal grids far downstream, a property which could be used in the future for flow design, management and passive control; the DNS obtained with fractal grids confirmed the existence of two turbulent regions, one where the turbulence progressively amplifies closer to the grid (the production region) followed by one where the turbulence decays; the energy spectra of fluctuating turbulent velocities at various locations in the production region of the flow provide some information on how the turbulence is generated at the smallest scales first near the grid where the smallest wakes are dominant, followed by progressively smaller turbulent frequencies further downstream where progressively larger wakes interact.  相似文献

To investigate the effectiveness of the Karhunen–Loeve (K–L) method as a data reduction approach, we study here its effect on the velocity and conformation statistics in a drag reducing turbulent polymer flow. The K–L method has been used to construct a set of basis velocity eigenfunctions from a large number of independent realizations of the velocity. Those were obtained from direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a viscoelastic turbulent channel flow using the Giesekus model. A subset of the K–L eigenfunctions, large enough to contain more than 90% of the fluctuating kinetic energy of the flow on the average, has then been subsequently used to obtain time series of projection coefficients of the velocity fields generated further from DNS. In a post-processing step, velocity fields were reconstructed using selected subsets of the projection coefficients. Those reconstructed velocity fields were then used to evaluate turbulent statistics as well as to integrate the constitutive equation. The turbulent statistics (r.m.s. velocities, Reynolds stress etc.) thus constructed showed good agreement with the full results from DNS. The Reynolds stress anisotropy was also calculated in this work for the first time. It was found to increase with viscoelasticity that was well reproduced in the reduced K–L data except near the channel centerline where the K–L data showed some loss of anisotropy. The biggest differences however between the K–L reduced data and the full DNS results were seen in the conformation statistics. The average polymer conformation extracted from the K–L reduced data was significantly less than that corresponding to the full DNS results anywhere except in the shear-dominated wall region. A further comparison of the energy and dissipation spectra between the full DNS and the K–L reconstructed data illustrated the impact of the K–L process in resulting to a significant damping of small turbulent scales even those contributing to the maximum in turbulent dissipation. This may also be the principal reason behind the poor quality of the K–L reconstructed conformation data.  相似文献

The dynamic subgrid-scale model is used in finite-difference computations of turbulent flow in a plane channel, for a range of Reynolds numbers (based on friction velocity and channel half-width) between 200 and 5000. Adoption of approximate wall boundary conditions allows the use of very coarse grids in all directions. The comparison of first- and second-order moments with the reference data is satisfactory, despite the mesh coarseness. Turbulent kinetic energy budgets also compare well with DNS data. Near the wall, the dynamic formulation gives improved results over the Smagorinsky model, as observed in previous simulation. In the core of the flow where, at high Reynolds number, the turbulent eddies obey inertial-range dynamics, the Smagorinsky and dynamic models give similar results. The behavior of the model, its implementation when approximate wall boundary conditions are used, and the effect of numerical resolution are discussed.Elias Balaras acknowledges the financial support provided by the European Economic Community under Grant ERBCHDICT930257. A stochastic method to represent the positions and velocities of fluid particles in a nonhomogeneous turbulence was pursued. Spatially varying Lagrangian time scales obtained from direct numerical simulations of turbulent flow in a channel and spatially varying joint Gaussian forcing functions were incorporated into a Langevin equation. The model was tested by comparing calculations of the dispersions and velocities of particles originating from point sources with experiments carried out in a DNS of fully-developed turbulent flows in a channel at Reτ = 150 and 300. The model captured the dispersions, mean velocities and moments of the velocity fluctuations very well. The use of jointly Gaussian (rather than uncorrelated Gaussian) forcing functions greatly improved the calculation of dispersions and mean velocities in the stream wise direction, as well as turbulence quantities which include stream wise velocity fluctuations. The condition of well-mixedness for the model was verified by considering the behavior of a uniform distribution of sources. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

This article develops a parallel large-eddy simulation (LES) with a one-equation subgrid-scale (SGS) model based on the Galerkin finite element method and three-dimensional (3D) brick elements. The governing filtered Navier–Stokes equations were solved by a second-order accurate fractional-step method, which decomposed the implicit velocity–pressure coupling in incompressible flow and segregated the solution to the advection and diffusion terms. The transport equation for the SGS turbulent kinetic energy was solved to calculate the SGS processes. This FEM LES model was applied to study the turbulence of the benchmark open channel flow at a Reynolds number Reτ = 180 (based on the friction velocity and channel height) using different model constants and grid resolutions. By comparing the turbulence statistics calculated by the current model with those obtained from direct numerical simulation (DNS) and experiments in literature, an optimum set of model constants for the current FEM LES model was established. The budgets of turbulent kinetic energy and vertical Reynolds stress were then analysed for the open channel flow. Finally, the flow structures were visualised to further reveal some important characteristics. It was demonstrated that the current model with the optimum model constants can predict well the organised structure near the wall and free surface, and can be further applied to other fundamental and engineering applications.  相似文献

A Lagrangian continuous random walk (CRW) model is developed to predict turbulent particle dispersion in arbitrary wall-bounded flows with prevailing anisotropic, inhomogeneous turbulence. The particle tracking model uses 3D mean flow data obtained from the Fluent CFD code, as well as Eulerian statistics of instantaneous quantities computed from DNS databases. The turbulent fluid velocities at the current time step are related to those of the previous time step through a Markov chain based on the normalized Langevin equation which takes into account turbulence inhomogeneities. The model includes a drift velocity correction that considerably reduces unphysical features common in random walk models. It is shown that the model satisfies the well-mixed criterion such that tracer particles retain approximately uniform concentrations when introduced uniformly in the domain, while their deposition velocity is vanishingly small, as it should be. To handle arbitrary geometries, it is assumed that the velocity rms values in the boundary layer can locally be approximated by the DNS data of fully developed channel flows. Benchmarks of the model are performed against particle deposition data in turbulent pipe flows, 90° bends, as well as more complex 3D flows inside a mouth-throat geometry. Good agreement with the data is obtained across the range of particle inertia.  相似文献

The presented research evaluates the interaction between a single bubble and homogeneous turbulent flow using direct numerical simulation (DNS) approach. The homogeneous single-phase turbulence is numerically generated by passing a uniform flow through grid planes. The turbulence decay rate is compared with experiment-based correlation. The single phase turbulence is then used as an inflow boundary condition for a set of single bubble studies. By estimating the turbulent field around the fully resolved bubble, the effects of bubble deformability, turbulent intensity and relative velocity on the bubble-induced turbulence are investigated. The existence of bubble creates new vortices in the wake region and the enhancement of turbulence is observed in the region behind the bubble. The results show that the magnitude of the turbulence enhancement would increase as the bubble encounters larger liquid turbulent intensity or higher relative velocity. Set of bubble Weber numbers from 0.34 to 3.39 are used to investigate the effect of bubble deformability. The more deformable bubble is the higher the increase in the magnitude of the turbulence enhancement behind the bubble. This research provides systematic insight on the bubble-induced turbulence (BIT) mechanism and is important for multiphase computational fluid dynamics (M-CFD) closure model development.  相似文献

Role of the smallest diffusive scales of a passive scalar field in the near-wall turbulent flow was examined with pseudo-spectral numerical simulations. Temperature fields were analyzed at friction Reynolds number Re τ=171 and at Prandtl numbers, Pr=1 and Pr=5.4. Results of direct numerical simulations (DNS) were compared with the under-resolved simulations where the velocity field was still resolved with the DNS accuracy, while a coarser grid was used to describe the temperature fields. Since the smallest temperature scales remained unresolved in these simulations, an appropriate spectral turbulent thermal diffusivity was applied to avoid pile-up at the higher wave numbers. In spite of coarser numerical grids, the temperature fields are still highly correlated with the DNS results, including instantaneous temperature fields. Results point to practically negligible role of the diffusive temperature scales on the macroscopic behavior of the turbulent heat transfer.

The paper examines the use of expressions proposed by Csanady to predict the influence of the crossing trajectory and continuity effects on the decorrelation time scales of the fluid along solid particle trajectories in horizontal and downward vertical channel flows. The model is evaluated using data provided by a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the carrier phase combined with a Lagrangian simulation of discrete particle (LS). Two particle relaxation times and two values of the gravity acceleration are considered. The results show the possibility of using Csanady’s expressions in a turbulent channel flow provided that the spatial and temporal correlations anisotropy is included in the model. As in isotropic homogeneous turbulence, a decrease of the decorrelation time scales is found to be more important in the directions perpendicular to the mean relative velocity.  相似文献

Experimental dual plane particle image velocimetry (PIV) data are assessed using direct numerical simulation (DNS) data of a similar flow with the aim of studying the effect of averaging within the interrogation window. The primary reason for the use of dual plane PIV is that the entire velocity gradient tensor and hence the full vorticity vector can be obtained. One limitation of PIV is the limit on dynamic range, while DNS is typically limited by the Reynolds number of the flow. In this study, the DNS data are resolved more finely than the PIV data, and an averaging scheme is implemented on the DNS data of similar Reynolds number to compare the effects of averaging inherent to the present PIV technique. The effects of averaging on the RMS values of the velocity and vorticity are analyzed in order to estimate the percentage of turbulence intensity and enstrophy captured for a given PIV resolution in turbulent boundary layers. The focus is also to identify vortex core angle distributions, for which the two-dimensional and three-dimensional swirl strengths are used. The studies are performed in the logarithmic region of a turbulent boundary layer at z + = 110 from the wall. The dual plane PIV data are measured in a zero pressure gradient flow over a flat plate at Re τ = 1,160, while the DNS data are extracted from a channel flow at Re τ = 934. Representative plots at various wall-normal locations for the RMS values of velocity and vorticity indicate the attenuation of the variance with increasing filter size. Further, the effect of averaging on the vortex core angle statistics is negligible when compared with the raw DNS data. These results indicate that the present PIV technique is an accurate and reliable method for the purposes of statistical analysis and identification of vortex structures.  相似文献

Dispersion of spray droplets and the modulation of turbulence in the ambient gas by the dispersing droplets are two coupled phenomena that are closely linked to the evolution of global spray characteristics, such as the spreading rate of the spray and the spray cone angle. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of turbulent gas flows laden with sub-Kolmogorov size particles, in the absence of gravity, report that dispersion statistics and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) evolve on different timescales. Furthermore, each timescale behaves differently with Stokes number, a non-dimensional flow parameter (defined in this context as the ratio of the particle response time to the Kolmogorov timescale of turbulence) that characterizes how quickly a particle responds to turbulent fluctuations in the carrier or gas phase. A new dual-timescale Langevin model (DLM) composed of two coupled Langevin equations for the fluctuating velocities, one for each phase, is proposed. This model possesses a unique feature that the implied TKE and velocity autocorrelation in each phase evolve on different timescales. Consequently, this model has the capability of simultaneously predicting the disparate Stokes number trends in the evolution of dispersion statistics, such as velocity autocorrelations, and TKE in each phase. Predictions of dispersion statistics and TKE from the new model show good agreement with published DNS of non-evaporating and evaporating droplet-laden turbulent flow.  相似文献
