Surface‐modified CdS nanoparticles selectively dispersed in hexagonally packed poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) cylinders of poly(styrene‐b‐ethylene oxide) (PSEO) block copolymers were prepared. The photoluminescence and ultraviolet–visible characteristics of the presynthesized CdS nanoparticles in N,N‐dimethylformamide and in PEO domains of the PSEO block copolymers were determined. Because of strong interactions between the CdS nanoparticles and PEO chains, as shown by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the incorporation of the CdS nanoparticles prevented the PEO cylinders from properly crystallizing; this was confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction measurements. The intercylinder distance between the swollen and reduced‐crystallinity CdS/PEO cylinders in turn increased, as confirmed by small‐angle X‐ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy. At a high CdS concentration (43 wt % or 8.3 vol % with respect to PEO), however, the hexagonally packed cylindrical nanostructure of the PSEO diblock copolymers was destroyed. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PEO–PDMS) diblock copolymer was used to template a bisphenol A type epoxy resin (ER); nanostructured thermoset blends of ER and PEO–PDMS were prepared with 4,4′‐methylenedianiline (MDA) as the curing agent. The phase behavior, crystallization, hydrogen‐bonding interactions, and nanoscale structures were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and small‐angle X‐ray scattering. The uncured ER was miscible with the poly(ethylene oxide) block of PEO–PDMS, and the uncured blends were not macroscopically phase‐separated. Macroscopic phase separation took place in the MDA‐cured ER/PEO–PDMS blends containing 60–80 wt % PEO–PDMS diblock copolymer. However, the composition‐dependent nanostructures were formed in the cured blends with 10–50 wt % PEO–PDMS, which did not show macroscopic phase separation. The poly(dimethylsiloxane) microdomains with sizes of 10–20 nm were dispersed in a continuous ER‐rich phase; the average distance between the neighboring microdomains was in the range of 20–50 nm. The miscibility between the cured ER and the poly(ethylene oxide) block of PEO–PDMS was ascribed to the favorable hydrogen‐bonding interaction. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of highly ordered mesoporous carbonaceous frameworks with diverse symmetries have been successfully synthesized by using phenolic resols as a carbon precursor and mixed amphiphilic surfactants of poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(propylene oxide)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO–PPO–PEO) and reverse PPO–PEO–PPO as templates by the strategy of evaporation‐induced organic–organic self‐assembly (EISA). The transformation of the ordered mesostructures from face‐centered (Fd m) to body‐centered cubic (Im m), then 2D hexagonal (P6mm), and eventually to cubic bicontinuous (Ia d) symmetry has been achieved by simply adjusting the ratio of triblock copolymers to resol precursor and the relative content of PEO–PPO–PEO copolymer F127, as confirmed by small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen‐sorption measurements. The blends of block copolymers can interact with resol precursors and tend to self‐assemble into cross‐linking micellar structures during the solvent‐evaporation process, which provides a suitable template for the construction of mesostructures. The assembly force comes from the hydrogen‐bonding interactions between organic mixed micelles and the resol‐precursor matrix. The BET surface area for the mesoporous carbonaceous samples calcined at 600 °C under nitrogen atmosphere is around 600 m2 g?1, and the pore size can be adjusted from 2.8 to 5.4 nm. An understanding of the organic–organic self‐assembly behavior in the mixed amphiphilic surfactant system would pave the way for the synthesis of mesoporous materials with controllable structures.  相似文献

Amphiphilic block copolymers provide a unique means for toughening epoxy resins because they can self‐assemble into different inclusion shapes before epoxy curing. The two examples reported here are spherical micelles and vesicles, which form in blends containing epoxy and symmetric or asymmetric poly(ethylene oxide)–poly(ethylene‐alt‐propylene) (PEO–PEP) block copolymer with PEO volume fractions of 0.5 and 0.26, respectively. The vesicles and spherical micelles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS), respectively. SAXS data from the spherical micelles were fit to the Percus–Yevick model for a liquid‐like packing of spheres with hard‐core interactions. Mechanical properties of spherical‐micelle‐modified and vesicle‐modified epoxies in the dilute limit are compared. The glass‐transition temperature and Young's (storage) modulus were tested with dynamic mechanical spectroscopy, and compact‐tension experiments were performed to determine the critical plane‐strain energy release rate for fracture. Vesicles were most effective in improving the epoxy fracture resistance. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 39: 2996–3010, 2001  相似文献

Blends of poly(2‐vinyl pyridine)‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (P2VP‐b‐PMMA) and poly(hydroxyether of bisphenol A) (phenoxy) were prepared by solvent casting from chloroform solution. The specific interactions, phase behavior and nanostructure morphologies of these blends were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In this block copolymer/homopolymer blend system, it is established that competitive hydrogen bonding exists as both blocks of the P2VP‐b‐PMMA are capable of forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds with phenoxy. It was observed that the interaction between phenoxy and P2VP is stronger than that between phenoxy and PMMA. This imbalance in the intermolecular interactions and the repulsions between the two blocks of the diblock copolymer lead to a variety of phase morphologies. At low phenoxy concentration, spherical micelles are observed. As the concentration increases, PMMA begins to interact with phenoxy, leading to the changes of morphology from spherical to wormlike micelles and finally forms a homogenous system. A model is proposed to describe the self‐assembled nanostructures of the P2VP‐b‐PMMA/phenoxy blends, and the competitive hydrogen bonding is responsible for the morphological changes. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A controlled co‐solvent vapor annealing system was designed and constructed to investigate the effects of solvent vapor activity during the rapid ambient quenching process on the morphology of a cylinder‐forming poly(styrene)‐b‐poly (ethylene oxide) (PS‐PEO) annealed in toluene and water vapor. A phase transformation from cylinders in the bulk to close‐packed spheres in swollen thin films occurred, which was reversed upon quenching with dry nitrogen. Quenching with humidified nitrogen preserved the spherical morphology but could significantly alter domain spacing and reduce long‐range order in the dried films under some circumstances. Specifically, long‐range order in the quenched films was found to decrease as the quenching humidity decreased from the humidity used during annealing, and the best long‐range order was obtained when the humidity remained consistent throughout both annealing and quenching. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The PCL‐b‐PES‐b‐PCL triblock copolymer is used to incorporate into epoxy resin when the blends are cured with 4,4'‐diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS) to afford the nanostructured epoxy thermosets. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform‐infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR) show that the nanostructured PCL‐b‐PES‐b‐PCL thermosets are accessed through the formation of the intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. The nanostructures are further evidenced by means of small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). By considering the miscibility of the subchains of block copolymer with epoxy before and after the curing reaction, it is judged that the formation of the nanostructures follows the mechanism of reaction‐induced microphase separation. It is noted that the epoxy resin is significantly toughened in terms of the measurement of critical stress field intensity factor (KIC). © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Herein, we present a simple method for producing nanoporous templates with a high degree of lateral ordering by self‐assembly of block copolymers. A key feature of this approach is control of the orientation of polymeric microdomains through the use of hydrophilic additives as structure directing agents. Incorporation of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) moieties into poly(styrene‐b‐methyl methacrylate) (PSt‐b‐PMMA) diblock copolymers gives vertical alignment of PMMA cylinders on the substrate after solvent annealing. Because of the miscibility between PEO and PMMA, PEO additives were selectively positioned within PMMA microdomains and by controlling the processing conditions, it was found that ordering of PSt‐b‐PMMA diblock copolymers could be achieved. The perpendicular orientation of PMMA cylinders was achieved by increasing the molecular size of the PEO additives leading to an increased hydrophilicity of the PMMA domains and consequently to control the orientation of microdomains in PSt‐b‐PMMA block copolymer thin films. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new, efficient method for synthesizing stable nanoparticles with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) functionalities on the core surface, in which the micellization and crosslinking reactions occur in one pot, has been developed. First, amphiphilic PEO‐b‐PS copolymers were synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) radical polymerization of styrene using (PEO)‐based trithiocarbonate as a macro‐RAFT agent. The low molecular weight PEO‐b‐PS copolymer was dissolved in isopropyl alcohol where the block copolymer self‐assembled as core‐shell micelles, and then the core‐shell interface crosslink was performed using divinylbenzene as a crosslinking agent and 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator. The design of the amphiphilic RAFT agent is critical for the successful preparation of core‐shell interface crosslinked micellar nanoparticles, because of RAFT functional groups interconnect PEO and polystyrene blocks. The PEO functionality of the nanoparticles surface was confirmed by 1H NMR and FTIR. The size and morphology of the nanoparticles was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and dynamic laser light scattering analysis. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer complexes were prepared from high molecular weight poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(styrene)‐block‐poly(4‐vinyl pyridine) (PS‐b‐P4VP) in dimethyl formamide (DMF). The hydrogen bonding interactions, phase behavior, and morphology of the complexes were investigated using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In this A‐b‐B/C type block copolymer/homopolymer system, P4VP block of the block copolymer has strong intermolecular interaction with PAA which led to the formation of nanostructured micelles at various PAA concentrations. The pure PS‐b‐P4VP block copolymer showed a cylindrical rodlike morphology. Spherical micelles were observed in the complexes and the size of the micelles increased with increasing PAA concentration. The micelles are composed of hydrogen‐bonded PAA/P4VP core and non‐bonded PS corona. Finally, a model was proposed to explain the microphase morphology of complex based on the experimental results obtained. The selective swelling of the PS‐b‐P4VP block copolymer by PAA resulted in the formation of different micelles. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work reports for the first time a simple and effective approach to trigger a spheres‐to‐ vesicles morphological transition from amphiphilic block copolymer/polyelectrolyte complexes in aqueous solution. Vesicles and large compound vesicles (LCVs) were prepared via complexation of polystyrene‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PS‐b‐PEO) with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) in water and directly visualized using cryo‐TEM. The complexation and morphological transitions were driven by the hydrogen bonding between the complementary binding sites on the PAA and PEO blocks of the block copolymer. The findings in this work suggest that complexation between amphiphilic block copolymer and polyelectrolyte is a viable approach to vesicles and LCVs in aqueous media.  相似文献

The hollow composite spheres with a raspberry‐like structure were prepared by a self‐assemble heterocoagulation based on the inter‐particle hydrogen‐bonding interaction between the amide groups of hollow poly (N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide‐coN‐isopropyl acrylamide) (P(MBA‐co‐NIPAAm)) microspheres and the carboxylic acid groups of poly(ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate‐co‐methacrylic acid) (P(EGDMA‐co‐MAA)) nanoparticles, in which P(EGDMA‐co‐MAA) nanoparticle acted as the corona and the hollow P(MBA‐co‐NIPAAm) microsphere behaved as the core. The control coverage of the corona particles on the surface of hollow core microspheres of P(MBA‐co‐NIPAAm)/P(EGDMA‐co‐MAA) hollow composite sphere was studied in detail through adjustment of the mass ratio between the core and corona particles. The effect of the pH on the stability of the raspberry‐like hollow spheres was investigated. The polymer particles and the resultant heterocoagulated raspberry‐like hollow spheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Numerical self‐consistent field (SCF) lattice computations allow a priori determination of the equilibrium morphology and size of supramolecular structures originating from the self‐assembly of neutral block copolymers in selective solvents. The self‐assembly behavior of poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly‐ε‐caprolactone (PEO‐PCL) block copolymers in water was studied as a function of the block composition, resulting in equilibrium structure and size diagrams. Guided by the theoretical SCF predictions, PEO‐PCL block copolymers of various compositions have been synthesized and assembled in water. The size and morphology of the resulting structures have been characterized by small‐angle X‐ray scattering, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, and multiangle dynamic light scattering. The experimental results are consistent with the SCF computations. These findings show that SCF is applicable to build up roadmaps for amphiphilic polymers in solution, where control over size and shape are required, which is relevant, for instance, when designing spherical micelles for drug delivery systems © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper describes the miscibility and self‐assembly, mediated by hydrogen‐bonding interactions, of new block copolymer/nanoparticle blends. The morphologies adopted by the immiscible poly[(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐(4‐vinyl pyridine)] (PCL‐b‐P4VP) diblock copolymer changes upon increasing the number of competitive hydrogen‐bonding interactions after adding increasing amounts of octaphenol polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OP‐POSS). Transmission electron microscopy reveals morphologies that exhibit high degrees of long‐range order, such as cylindrical and spherical structures, at relatively low OP‐POSS contents, and short‐range order or disordered structures at higher OP‐POSS contents. Analyses performed using differential scanning calorimetry, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, and FT‐IR spectroscopy provide positive evidence that the pyridyl units of the P4VP block are significantly stronger hydrogen‐bond acceptors toward the OH group of OP‐POSS than are the CO groups of the PCL block, thereby resulting in excluded and confined PCL phases.

Reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization afforded triple hydrogen‐bonding block copolymers (PBA‐b‐PDAD) with well‐controlled molecular weight and molecular weight distributions (1.2–1.4). The complexation via specific hydrogen bonding between these block copolymers in CHCl3 provided an unprecedented approach for the formation of spherical vesicles. Atomic force microscopy and dynamic light‐scattering measurements revealed that the resultant polymeric vesicles were about 100 nm in radius. Triple hydrogen‐bonding interactions between maleimide and PBA‐b‐PDAD resulted in the dissociation of these spherical vesicles, facilitating the guest molecule recognition. The hydrogen‐bonding interaction between maleimide and the PBA‐b‐PDAD was further confirmed by 1H NMR and FTIR spectra. These results indicated that these vesicles of triple hydrogen‐bonding block copolymer could be a potential new vehicle for molecular recognition. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Amphiphilic BuO‐(PEO‐stat‐PPO)‐block‐PLA‐OH diblock and MeO‐PEO‐block‐(PEO‐stat‐PPO)‐block‐PLA‐OH triblock copolymers incorporating thermoresponsive poly(ethylene oxide‐stat‐propylene oxide) (PEO‐stat‐PPO) blocks were prepared by ring‐opening polymerization of lactide (LA) initiated by macroinitiators formed from treating BuO‐(PEO‐stat‐PPO)‐OH and MeO‐PEO‐block‐(PEO‐stat‐PPO)‐OH with AlEt3. MeO‐PEO‐block‐(PEO‐stat‐PPO)‐OH was prepared by coupling MeO‐PEO‐OH and HO‐(PEO‐stat‐PPO)‐OH, followed by chromatographic purification. The cloud points of 0.2% aqueous solutions are between 36 and 46 °C for the diblock copolymers that contain a 50 wt % EO thermoresponsive block and 78 °C for the triblock copolymer that contains a 75 wt % EO thermoresponsive block. Variable temperature 1H NMR spectra recorded on D2O solutions of the diblock copolymers display no PLA resonances below the cloud point and fairly sharp PLA resonances above the cloud point, suggesting that desolvation of the thermoresponsive block increases the miscibility of the two blocks. Preliminary characterization of the micelles formed in aqueous solutions of BuO‐(PEO‐stat‐PPO)‐block‐PLA‐OH conducted using laser scanning confocal microscopy and pulsed gradient spin echo NMR point to significant changes in the size of the micellar aggregates as a function of temperature. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) can be used as efficient transverse relaxivity (T2) contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Organizing small (D<10 nm) SPIONs into large assemblies can considerably enhance their relaxivity. However, this assembly process is difficult to control and can easily result in unwanted aggregation and precipitation, which might further lead to lower contrast agent performance. Herein, we present highly stable protein–polymer double‐stabilized SPIONs for improving contrast in MRI. We used a cationic–neutral double hydrophilic poly(N‐methyl‐2‐vinyl pyridinium iodide‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymer (P2QVP‐b‐PEO) to mediate the self‐assembly of protein‐cage‐encapsulated iron oxide (γ‐Fe2O3) nanoparticles (magnetoferritin) into stable PEO‐coated clusters. This approach relies on electrostatic interactions between the cationic N‐methyl‐2‐vinylpyridinium iodide block and magnetoferritin protein cage surface (pI≈4.5) to form a dense core, whereas the neutral ethylene oxide block provides a stabilizing biocompatible shell. Formation of the complexes was studied in aqueous solvent medium with dynamic light scattering (DLS) and cryogenic transmission electron microcopy (cryo‐TEM). DLS results indicated that the hydrodynamic diameter (Dh) of the clusters is approximately 200 nm, and cryo‐TEM showed that the clusters have an anisotropic stringlike morphology. MRI studies showed that in the clusters the longitudinal relaxivity (r1) is decreased and the transverse relaxivity (r2) is increased relative to free magnetoferritin (MF), thus indicating that clusters can provide considerable contrast enhancement.  相似文献

Dendron‐like poly(ε‐benzyloxycarbonyl‐L ‐lysine)/linear poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymers (i.e., Dm‐PZLys‐b‐PEO, m = 0 and 3; Dm are the propargyl focal point poly(amido amine) dendrons having 2m primary amine groups) were for the first time synthesized by combining ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ε‐benzyloxycarbonyl‐L ‐lysine N‐carboxyanhydride (Z‐Lys‐NCA) and click chemistry, where Dm‐PZLys homopolypeptides were click conjugated with azide‐terminated PEO. Their molecular structures and physical properties were characterized in detail by FTIR, 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and wide angle X‐ray diffraction. Both homopolypeptides and copolymers presented a liquid crystalline phase transition for PZLys block, and the transition was irreversible. Moreover, the degree of crystallinity of PEO block within linear copolymers decreased from 96.2% to 20.4% with increasing PZLys composition, whereas that within dendritic copolymers decreased to zero. The secondary conformation of PZLys progressively changed from β‐sheet to α‐helix with increasing the chain length. These copolymers self‐assembled into spherical nanoparticles in aqueous solution, and the anticancer drug doxorubicin‐loaded nanoparticles gave a similar morphology compared with their blank counterparts. The drug‐loaded nanoparticles showed a triphasic drug‐release profile at aqueous pH 7.4 or 5.5 and 37 °C and sustained a longer drug‐release period for about 2 months. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel block copolymers, poly(3‐hexylthiophene)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (P3HT‐b‐PEO) were synthesized via Suzuki coupling reaction of P3HT and PEO homopolymers. The copolymers were characterized by NMR, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimeter, and UV–vis measurements. A series of devices based on the block copolymers with a fullerene derivative were evaluated after thermal or solvent annealing. The device using P3HT‐b‐PEO showed higher efficiency than using P3HT blend after thermal annealing. Phase‐separated structures in the thin films of block copolymer blends were investigated by atomic force microscopy to clarify the relationship between morphologies constructed by annealing and the device performance. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Composite ultrafiltration membranes were fabricated by coating a thin film of self‐assembling polystyrene‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PS‐b‐PEO) block copolymers and poly(acrylic acid) homopolymers on top of a support membrane. Block copolymers self‐assembled into a nanostructure where the minority component forms cylinders, whereas homopolymers reside in the core of the cylinders. Selective removal of the homopolymers led to the formation of pores. The morphology of the polymer layer was controlled by varying the content of homopolymers or polymer concentration of the coating solution, which led to membranes with different molecular weight cutoffs (MWCOs) and permeabilities. Uniform pores were obtained using low homopolymer contents, whereas high homopolymer contents caused macrophase separation and resulted in large polydisperse pores or craters at the surface. The thickness of the block copolymer film also influenced the structure and performance of the membranes, where a thicker film results in a strong decrease in permeability but a lower MWCO. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
