A pyro-electric technique is developed which allows the measurement of the dielectric response near the A*-C* phase transition in ferroelectric liquid crystals. The temperature dependence of the elastic modulus K θ(T) corresponding to the molecular tilt in smectic layers is calculated from the experimental data. Direct pyro-electric measurements of the relaxation time for the spontaneous polarization P s and the data on K θ(T) allow us to calculate the temperature behaviour of the twist-viscosity γ1(T) for the smectic C* phase. The curves γ1(T) are compared for the smectic C* and the nematic phase of the same compound and the dependence of the twist viscosity on the molecular tilt angle in the C* phase is investigated. The results of the dielectic measurements are discussed in terms of the mean-field approximation.  相似文献

The temperature variation of density and ultrasonic velocity of the liquid crystal hexyloxybenzylidene phenylazoaniline are reported. The density across the smectic A—smectic B transition is more predominant than the other transitions. The density variation with temperature and the calculated thermal expansion coefficients suggest that the transitions isotropic liquid—nematic, nematic—smectic A and smectic A—smectic B are of first order. Anomalous behaviour of ultrasonic velocity is observed across the isotropic liquid—nematic transition and prominent dips in velocity are observed at the nematic—smectic A and smectic A—smectic B transitions. The adiabatic compressibility (β ad ) Rao number (R a ) and molar compressibility (B) are estimated using the experimental density and ultrasonic velocity.  相似文献

The electrical conductivity of the two liquid crystal mixtures N-(4-ethoxybenzylidene)-4′-amino benzonitrile (PEBAB)/4,4′-di-n-hexyloxy-azoxybenze (HEXOAB) and 4-n-heptyloxy-4′-cyanobiphenyl (7 CBP)/HEXOAB, which exhibit induced smectic A phases is investigated. In the smectic phases, the conductivity anisotropy of the PEBAB/HEXOAB mixtures is negative at the lowest PEBAB concentrations; this behaviour is usually expected for a smectic layer structure. With increasing PEBAB concentration the anisotropy increases and becomes positive. Possibly, this is an indication for a growing double layer structure, which was observed in polar smectic phases. In the nematic phases the conductivity anisotropy of the pure HEXOAB is considerably reduced by adding a relatively small amount of the polar component. An addition of 10 mole% 7 CBP reduces the anisotropy ratio of the electrical conductivity to V = K/K 1 ≈ 0.2, which probably is the lowest value observed in a nematic phase so far. Besides the negative conductivity anisotropy, these mixtures also exhibit a positive anisotropy of the dielectric constant. They thus fulfil the conditions for inverse dynamic scattering.  相似文献

Abstract

The preparation and melting behaviour of the homologous series of 4-acetyl-4′-n-alkanoylox-azobenzenes, CH3-CO-C6H4-N?N-C6H4-O-CO-(CH2) n -CH3, (with n ranging from zero to 16) is reported. The melting behaviour has been investigated by means of thermal microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The experimental results indicate for almost all the compounds the presence of solid state polymorphism and a type A smectic; for one compound a type B smectic phase is also present. Some homologs present, in addition, a nematic phase.  相似文献

We have carried out pressure studies on the eighth and ninth members of the homologous series 4-alkoxybenzoyloxy-4′-cyanoazobenzene (nOBCAB). It is found that the pressure behavior of the monolayer smectic A (A1) phase is entirely different from that of the partially bilayer smectic A (A1) phase. The A1 -nematic phase boundary is a straight line at all pressures and the range of the Ad phase increases with increasing pressure. On the other hand, the Ad -nematic phase boundary is elliptic in shape and the Ad phase gets bounded. These results emphasize the fact that the pressure behavior of the A phase is strongly related to the extent of overlap of the molecules in the layer.  相似文献

A comparative study of the crystal and molecular structures of 4-alkylcyanobiphenyls (ACB-n) C n H2n + 1-C6H4-C6H4-CN (n = 2, 4–12) belonging to liquid-crystal compounds revealed no direct relationship between the molecular geometry of these compounds and their liquid-crystalline properties. Mesogenic properties are determined by the alternation of the loosely packed aliphatic and closely packed aromatic regions in the crystals. Graphs describing the crystals and mesophases were designed for ACB-n. The graph for nematic mesogens of ACB-n (n = 5−7) has one structure-forming element. The graph for smectic-nematic (n = 8 and 9) and smectic (n = 10−12) mesogens have more than one structure-forming element. If different types of secondary bonds in the smectic mesophase have equal energies, the disruption of these interactions caused by the temperature rise occurs simultaneously and the system undergoes a transition from the smectic phase to the isotropic liquid. If the energies of different types of secondary bonds are different, the destruction of the mesophase occurs in steps and the phase transitions are more complicated (smectic-nematic-isotropic transitions).  相似文献

The spontaneous polarization (P s) induced by chiral dipolar additives in non-chiral smectic C liquid crystals was investigated. High values of Ps , are reported. A special type of smectic polymorphism was observed and novel phases, supposedly, of the anti-ferroelectric type were discovered. Fast linear electro-optical switching with low-temperature mixtures was demonstrated.  相似文献

The phase diagrams are determined of binary mixtures composed of 4-n-alkylbiphenylates 4-cyanobiphenyl (n-CBB)-smectics A1, for n < 8 and esters of 4-(trans-4′-n-alkylcyclohexyl)benzoic acid (10CPCHB, 10NPCHB, 10FOPCHB)-smectics Ad. The effect is studied of the smectic layer spacing ratio and polarity of the components on the induction of the nematic phase in the tested series of compounds. The virtual N SAd phase transition points in series n-CBB are estimated and the effect is discussed of the stability of the smectic phase and polarity of the molecules of the mixture components on the width and position of the nematic gap.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper describes the effect of terminal substituent on the mesomorphic properties in 3-and 4-(4-alkoxyphenoxycarbonyl)phenyl 3- and 4-R-benzoate and 4-(4-alkoxybenzoyloxy)phenyl 2-, 3-, and 4-R-benzoates (R = CF3, OCF3, OCF2H). The meta-trifluoromethoxy and para-difluoromethoxy compounds tend to show a smectic C phase, as well as smectic A and nematic ones, and introduction of a chiral carbon in the alkoxyl group induces the chiral smectic C one.  相似文献

The thermal properties for a homologous series of 4-(4-alkoxyphenoxycarbonyl)phenyl 5-cyano-2-furancarboxylates have been examined. The smectic A phase commences from the hexyloxy homolog, and the octyloxy, nonyloxy and decyloxy homologs show two kinds of smectic A phases and experience the SA-SA transition. The lower phase which shows a typical fan shaped texture is assigned to a smectic A with a bilayer arrangement of the molecules (SA2). The higher phase which shows a typical fan shaped texture on the cooling stage and a broken fan one on the heating stage, is assigned to a smectic A with a partially bilayer arrangement of the molecules (SAd). The SA-SA transitions could be easily detected by both differential scanning calorimeter and optical microscopic method.  相似文献

A homologous series of 4 - alkoxyphenyl-4′-[4″-cyano-benzyloxy] benzoates have been synthesized. Within this series three smectic A phases : SA 1, SA d and SA 2 were identified by mean of small angle X-Ray scattering. Furthermore three derivatives exhibit the novel smectic phase made of ribbons S~C.  相似文献

For the binary mixture of 4′-Nitrophenyl 4-n-octyloxybenzoate and 4-n-Octyloxyphenyl 4′-pentyloxybenzoate with an induced smectic A phase the refractive indices (nc and no) and the density were measured in dependence on the temperature. The orientational order parameter and the density were calculated using a mean field fitting method. In the induced SA phase the refractive indices and the calculated orientational order parameters are showing only a weak dependence on concentration. The calculated and measured densities are in the same order of magnitude.  相似文献

The electrooptical properties of 4-n-octyl-4′-cyano-biphenyl (8CB) in the smectic A phase were investigated. The electrohydrodynamic instability in the smectic A phase was observed, when a small quantity of any homologue (C7, C8, C9) of 4-n-alkoxyben-zoic acid was adzed to this material. After the electrical field is turned off, the stable focal-conic texture is formed. A reverse focal-conic to homeotropic transition can be as well induced by means of an electric field.  相似文献

To study structure-mesomorphism relationships of chiral materials based on menthol, a series of chiral compounds containing menthyl group were synthesized. Their chemical structures, formula, and the purity were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), and elemental analyses. The corresponding phase behavior was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). The effect of the mesogenic core, flexible spacer, and terminal groups on the mesophase formation and type was discussed. The compound 4-menthyloxyacetoxybenzoyloxy-4′- (6-bromohexyloxy)biphenyl showed the smectic A (SA) and cholesteric phases on heating cycle, and a cubic Blue Phase, chiral smectic C (SC*), SA and cholesteric phases on cooling cycle. However, the compound 4-menthyloxyacetoxybenzoyloxy-4′-(4-bromobutoxy)biphenyl showed enantiotropic SC*, SA and cholesteric phases, moreover, the platelet texture of a cubic Blue Phase was also observed on cooling cycle. The methacrylate monomer with six flexible methylene units and three phenyl rings as mesogenic core only showed cholesteric phase, while the methacrylate monomer with four methylene unit and three phenyl rings showed the SC* and cholesteric phases. However, when the terminal methacryloyloxy groups in the monomers were substituted by thiophenylacryloyloxy groups, the corresponding monomers all show no mesophase. With increasing the rigidity of mesogenic core or decreasing the flexible methylene spacer length, the corresponding melting temperature (Tm) or isotropic temperature (Ti) increased.  相似文献

The phase sequences of the homologues with n (the number of carbon atoms in the terminal alkyl chains) from 2 to 8 are obtained. At low temperatures, i) several crystalline modifications are found in each of the members with n = 4, 5, and 6 and ii) the monotropic transitions between crystal and smectic phase are observed in almost all the members. At intermediate temperature, iii) between the smectic H and C phases, the smectic F phase is found in the homologues with n ≥ = 5 by morphological observation or by a rheological method. The constancy of the temperature of the SH(or SF) – Sc transition with respect to “and broadening of the temperature range of SH with increasing n in the expense of nematic phase are worthy of note. The even-odd effect of the end chain length n is observed very distinctively on the crystal melting and clearing point. Proton NMR measurement reveals a large mobility in the terminal alkyl chains in the crystal of the member with n = 6.  相似文献

The properties of an even homologous series of alkoxy benzoic acids have been investigated in the crystalline and mesomorphic states by means of thermal microscopy, x-ray scattering and dilatometry.

Structural parameters such as inter-lamellar distance d, and the molar volume Vm were studied as a function of the number n of methylene units of the alcoxy radical.

In the crystalline state and the smectic C state the variation of d and of Vm with n is perfectly linear. The angle of tilt of the paraffinic chains α′ and of the aromatic stems φ was determined in the crystalline state. It was found that both moieties have the same magnitude of the tilt. In the smectic C state the value of α′ was found to be 25° as compared to 60.7° in the crystalline state indicating a “pulling up” of hydrocarbon tails when passing from the crystalline state to the smectic state. The passage from crystalline into the smectic state is also accompanied by a strong increase in Vm. Analysis of data indicates that this increase is entirely due to the aromatic part of the molecule while the aliphatic chains have the same Vm as in the crystalline state. It is concluded that while in the crystalline state the cohesion of the phase is insured to a large extent by dimerized, hydrogen bonded molecules, in the smectic C state the cohesion is insured by attraction between extended aliphatic chains. Evidence is also given for the formation of cybotactic groups in the nematic phase of octyloxy benzoic acid.  相似文献

A novel ester homologous series of rich mesomorphism and low temperatures with unexpected phase behaviors of eleven homologues was synthesized and studied with a view to understanding and establishing the relation between mesomorphic behaviour and the molecular structure of a series 4-(4′-n-alkoxybenzoyloxy)-4″-chlorobenzyl cinnamates. All the members of the novel series are enantiotropically smectogenic and the octyloxy (C8) to hexadecyloxy (C16) homologues are enantiotropically nematogenic, in addition to smectogenic. Odd–even effect is observed for Sm?I/Sm?N transition curve but it is absent for N?I transition curve. Textures of nematic phase are threaded or Schlieren and that of the smectic phase are fan shaped or batonates of smectic-A type phase or Smectic-C type for C16 homologues as judged directly from a heating stage of an optical polarizing microscopy. Analytical and spectral data confirmed the molecular structures of novel homologues. Mesomorphic properties of present series are compared with the structurally similar other known series. The average smectic and nematic thermal stabilities are 92.78°C and 100.8°C, respectively. Mesophase length minimum to maximum for smectic and nematic are 21.0°C to 31.1°C and 8.4°C to 42.6°C respectively. Thus, the present novel series is partly nematogenic and fully smectogenic with considerable degree of mesomorphism and low melting type.  相似文献

A novel homologous series of thermotropic liquid crystals α-4-(4′-n-alkoxy benzoyloxy phenyl) β-2″-chloro benzoyl ethylenes have been synthesized and studied with a view to understand and establish the effect of molecular structure on liquid crystal (LC) properties with reference to molecular flexibility in isomeric series with differing positional status of same functional group. Novel homologues series consist of 12 homologues C1 to C16. C1, C2, and C3 homologues are nonliquid crystals (NLC) and rest of the homologues are liquid crystals. C10 to C16 homologues are enantiotropically smectogenic plus nematogenic and C4 to C8 homologues are enantiotropic nematic. The texture of nematogenic derivatives is threaded or schlieren and that of the smectic mesophase are focal conic of the type smectic A or C. Analytical, thermal and spectral data supported molecular structures of novel homologues. Transition temperatures as determine by a hot stage polarizing optical microscopy (POM) were plotted against number of carbon atom present in n-alkyl chain ‘R’ of left n-alkoxy (-OR) group and the phase transition curves Cr–I/M, Sm–N, N–I were obtained on linking like or related points. The odd–even effect is observed for the N–I transition curve and thus transition curves behaved in normal manner. The even-membered nematic transition curve occupied higher position than the odd-membered transition curve. Present series is predominantly nematogenic and partly smectogenic with middle-ordered melting type.  相似文献
