ABSTRACT

The nematic phases of a lyotropic system NadS/ decanol/ heavy water are investigated using optical conoscopy and image processing. The phase diagram obtained from these lyotropic materials predicts the occurrence of a direct phase transition, which does not present the biaxial nematic phase, between the discotic (ND) and calamitic (NC) nematic phases. A biaxial nematic (NB) phase is optically characterized and confirmed through conoscopic image, inside the biaxial range, between the two uniaxial nematic phases. Also, their respective transition points are determined by means of image processing. The NB phase observed here is discussed as part of the nature of the micellar configuration of lyotropic materials which exhibit uniaxial nematic phases.  相似文献

Two homologous series of twelve compounds each of biphenylbenzoates have been synthesised and their mesomorphic properties characterised. Heats of transition for both series of compounds have also been measured using differential scanning calorimetry. In the biphenyl 4-p-n-alkoxybenzoate series the first few members are monotropic nematic and the higher ones exhibit enantiotropic nematic as well as smectic phases, whereas in the biphenyl 4-p-n-alkyl benzoate series only the monotropic nematic phase is observed. In both series of compounds the plot of the nematic-isotropic transition temperature against the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain exhibit smooth curve relationships.  相似文献

The phase transition from the bipolar structure to the homogeneous structure in droplets formed from the nematic liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl in poly(vinyl butyral) in the presence of a magnetic field has been investigated. The phase transition is associated with the expansion of the regions with a tilted orientation of the director in the vicinity of defects (the disappearance of boojums) and with the alignment of the nematic director lines in the bulk of the droplet in the direction of the magnetic field. In the temperature range T = 24−34°C, cyclic mutual transformations between the bipolar configuration of the nematic director and the homogeneous structure, which have a period of ∼0.5–3.5 s and result from thermal fluctuations of the order parameter, are observed in droplets 3–15 μm in size after the forming field is switched off.  相似文献

The study of the calorific effect of the magnetically-induced phase transition in doped nematic phases is described. The systems examined consisted of PCB as a nematic host phase and S-N-1-phenylethyl-4n-alkylbenzamides as non-mesogenic optically active dopants. The calorific effect was estimated indirectly from the temperature dependence of the magnetic-field-threshold of the helical unwinding and of the reverse process; i.e. the helical winding. It appears that it is the ratio of the length of an optically active dopant and that of the nematic host which determines the temperature dependencies of such parameters as the helical pitch, microscopic twisting power, and latent heat. A comparison with the magnetocaloric effect in nematic liquid crystals1 is also made.  相似文献

Melting and crystallization processes of EBBA (N-p-ethoxybenzylidene-p'-butyl aniline) have been studied by the method of microscopic observation. A solid sample obtained by rapid cooling (cooling rate: 40 K/min) from nematic to 5°C (sample A) shows granular texture. A band like crystal grows in sample A at room temperature. A solid sample obtained by quenching (cooling rate: 13 K/s) from nematic to about - 100°C (sample B) shows cloudy texture. In the heating process sample B transforms to a more stable crystalline form which shows mosaic texture. A needle crystal grows slowly in a supercooled nematic state, then smaller needle crystals grow rapidly around the needle crystal. The formation and transformation processes of solid modifications are explained on the basis of the idea of instability of them, and schematic phase diagram of those solid forms is presented.

The crystal and molecular structures of 4-alkoxybenzoic acids C n H2n + 1-O-C6H4-COOH, n = 4–12, which are nematic (n = 4–6) or smectic-nematic (n = 7–12) mesogenes, are studied. No direct relationship between the molecular geometry and mesogenic properties is found. All the crystal structures contain dimers formed by pairs of O…H-O hydrogen bonds between carboxyl groups. Crystals belonging to the group of smectic-nematic liquid crystals (SNLC) are built of separate regions, namely, loosely packed aliphatic regions and closely packed aromatic regions with significant π-stacking interactions. Loose aliphatic regions occur in crystals belonging to the group of nematic liquid crystals (NLC); however, they are surrounded by dense aromatic regions and do not run throughout the crystal. In NLC, π-stacking interactions are far weaker than in SNLC. At the early stage of melting of SNLC crystals, structurized associates due to both π-stacking interactions and hydrogen bonds are retained in the melt (smectic phase), whereas, upon further heating, only hydrogen-bonded associates are left (nematic phase). In the course of melting of NLC, only hydrogen-bonded dimers are retained in the melt (nematic phase).  相似文献

The effective flexoelectric coefficient and flexoelectric polarization are investigated for a bimesogenic liquid crystal CBC11CB with a twist bend nematic phase (Ntb). The effective flexoelectric coefficients for CBC11CB in the ordinary nematic phase (N) are obtained to be much larger in comparison to conventional calamitics, and is almost twice higher for CBC11CB than that reported for another odd symmetric bimesogen. The flexoelectric polarization (Pf) in the N phase is found to be almost 2.5 times higher than in rod-like molecules. Additionally, Pf is obtained to be much larger in the Ntb phase than in the nematic phase.  相似文献

X-ray diffraction studies on samples of 4′-Pentyloxy-4-Cyanobiphenyl and 4′-Octyloxy-4-Cyanobiphenyl over the entire mesomorphic range are reported in this paper. A magnetic field was used to align samples. The orientational distribution functions f(β) have been calculated from the angular distribution of X-ray intensities. Orientational order parameters ( P 2) and ( P 4) have been calculated and compared with Maier-Saupe theoretical values. Expressions for the angular part of the pseudopotentials have been obtained from the temperature variation of f(β). The intermolecular distances D have been calculated from the experimental data and it is found that D is significantly smaller for well aligned samples. The apparent molecular length in the nematic phase and the layer thickness in the smectic phase have also been determined and are found to be about 1.4 times larger than the true molecular length in the fully extended form. This is in accordance with the findings from other cyano compounds.  相似文献

Eight hexa-n-alkanoyloxy truxenes are presented. These new disc-like liquid crystals exhibit both columnar and N D nematic phases. The N D nematic phase is the first low temperature one. All these compounds show an inverted nematic-columnar sequence: the fluid N D nematic phase is observed while heating after the crystalline phase below one or two viscous columnar phases and shows a phenomenon quite similar to the reentrant nematic behaviour.  相似文献

Phase transition behaviour of the systems of EBBA with methyl alcohol (MeOH), 1.2-dibromo-ethylene (DBE), o-xylene, m-xylene, and p-xylene has been studied. The phase diagrams for each system have been determined by the polarizing microscope. The slopes, βn and Bi, of the nematic and the isotropic phase boundary lines in each system have been qualitatively described by the molecular field treatment proposed by Humphries. The order parameters for both cis-and trans-DBE in EBBA have been obtained from analyses of 1H-NMR spectra. In the nematic phase, they decrease with increase in temperature. In the nematic/isotropic coexisting phase (N/I phase), the order parameter for CIS-DBE is almost independent of temperature. The proton spin-lattice relaxation times (T1) in the MeOH/EBBA system have been measured by a pulse NM R technique. Little temperature dependence of T1 has been found in the N/1 phase region.c  相似文献

A novel ester homologous series of rich mesomorphism and low temperatures with unexpected phase behaviors of eleven homologues was synthesized and studied with a view to understanding and establishing the relation between mesomorphic behaviour and the molecular structure of a series 4-(4′-n-alkoxybenzoyloxy)-4″-chlorobenzyl cinnamates. All the members of the novel series are enantiotropically smectogenic and the octyloxy (C8) to hexadecyloxy (C16) homologues are enantiotropically nematogenic, in addition to smectogenic. Odd–even effect is observed for Sm?I/Sm?N transition curve but it is absent for N?I transition curve. Textures of nematic phase are threaded or Schlieren and that of the smectic phase are fan shaped or batonates of smectic-A type phase or Smectic-C type for C16 homologues as judged directly from a heating stage of an optical polarizing microscopy. Analytical and spectral data confirmed the molecular structures of novel homologues. Mesomorphic properties of present series are compared with the structurally similar other known series. The average smectic and nematic thermal stabilities are 92.78°C and 100.8°C, respectively. Mesophase length minimum to maximum for smectic and nematic are 21.0°C to 31.1°C and 8.4°C to 42.6°C respectively. Thus, the present novel series is partly nematogenic and fully smectogenic with considerable degree of mesomorphism and low melting type.  相似文献

The influence of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic aerosil nanoparticles density on the formation of the prenematic order close to the isotropic – nematic (I–N) phase transition is presented. The lowering of the activation energy, with the increase of aerosil nanoparticles density, suggests a change of the prenematic order in the isotropic phase. The temperature dependence of the static dielectric permittivity for 4–n–pentyl–4′–cyanobiphenyl (5CB) exhibits an anomaly near the I–N phase transition. With the increase of aerosil density, a substantial modification in the anomaly of the static permittivity was observed in the isotropic phase. Indicated changes are different for hydrophilic and hydrophobic aerosil as a result of different surface interaction between nematic molecules and aerosil nanoparticles.  相似文献

A series of 3-fluoro-4-cyanophenyl 4′-n-alkylbenzoates, which show monotropic nematic phases, was prepared and their transition temperatures and melting enthalpies were measured. The 3-fluoro-4-cyanophenyl 4′-n-propylbenzoate, 3-chloro-4-cyanophenyl 4′-n-propylbenzoate and 4-cyanophenyl 4′-n-propylbenzoate were mixed with a nematic mixture (A) of 4-n-alkoxyphenyl 4′-n-alkylcyclohexane-1′-carboxylates. 3-Fluoro-4-cyanophenyl 4′-n-propylbenzoate decreases the N-1 transition temperature less, increases the birefringence more, and increases the bulk viscosity less than 3-chloro-4-cyanophenyl 4′-n-propylbenzoate, and reduces the threshold voltage to the greatest extent. The dielectric anisotropies of 3-fluoro-4-cyanophenyl 4′-n-propylbenzoate and 4-cyanophenyl 4′-n-propylbenzoate determined from a series of solutions of the compounds in nematic mixture (A) are 35.9 and 29.6, respectively.  相似文献

In this study, the chemical structures and physical property dependencies of the electro-optical properties were investigated in polymer-stabilized blue phase (BP) using the four kinds of 4-n-alkyloxy-4′-cyanobiphenyl (n-OCB) homologue chiral nematic LCs. It was confirmed that the optical response time and Kerr coefficient in polymer-stabilized BP was varied with the molecular parity as determined by the alkyl chain length of the n-OCB homologue chiral nematic LC mixtures.  相似文献

As a part of our systematic studies on liquid crystal dimers, we present in this article the nature of phase transitions across isotropic–nematic and nematic–smectic-A exhibited by DLCs, α,ω-bis-(4-n-alkylaniline benzylidene-4?-oxy) alkanes. Further, the orientational order parameter in the nematic phase of these DLCs are estimated from the molecular polarisabilities calculated using the experimental refractive indices and density results. The molecular polarisabilities αe and αo are obtained for the compounds using the above results for both Vuks and Neugebauer local field models applicable to nematic liquid crystal. αe and αo calculated in this way are used to obtain Δα. The polarisability anisotropy in the perfect order (absolute K) is calculated semi-empirically using the δ-function model developed by Lippincott et al. and molecular vibration method. The values of polarisability anisotropy for both local electric field models differ significantly. No criterion is known to decide which value is correct. To avoid the determination of uncertain α and Δα values considering different local field models, a simple procedure developed by Kuczynski et al. was used for evaluation of S, based solely on birefringence δn = (ne-no) and this value of S is compared with those obtained from field models.  相似文献

Lyotropic nematic textures are investigated, using optical microscopy, near the reentrant isotropic (IRE) ‐ discotic nematic (ND) ‐ biaxial nematic (NB) ‐ calamitic nematic (NC+) ‐ isotropic (I) phase transitions in a lyotropic mixture of potassium laurate, decanol and D2O. The NB, intermediate phase between the two uniaxial nematic ones, is characterized by optical birefringence measurements. In this way, using a polarizing microscope and a colour CCD digital camera, the NBNC+ phase transition is identified as well as the domain of the NB phase and NDNB transition point in accordance with optical birefringence data (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Abstract

Wideline and high resolution NMR studies have been carried out on MBBA in its isotropic, nematic and solid phases. Isotropic and nematic phase spectra correspond to what has been reported earlier. In the solid phase, contrary to expectations, very intense narrow signals similar to signals of the isotropic phase have been observed for the first time at temperatures close to the solid ? nematic phase transition temperature. This indicates rapid reorientational or translational motion in the system. The X-ray results however confirm the existence of translational order. The results are interpreted as indicative of the existence of a plastic crystalline phase in MBBA.  相似文献
