For Wishart density functions, we study the risk dominance problems of the restricted maximum likelihood estimators of mean matrices with respect to the Kullback-Leibler loss function over restricted parameter space under the simple tree ordering set. The results are directly applied to the estimation of covariance matrices for the completely balanced multivariate multi-way random effects models without interactions.  相似文献

The problem of estimating large covariance matrices of multivariate real normal and complex normal distributions is considered when the dimension of the variables is larger than the number of samples. The Stein–Haff identities and calculus on eigenstructure for singular Wishart matrices are developed for real and complex cases, respectively. By using these techniques, the unbiased risk estimates for certain classes of estimators for the population covariance matrices under invariant quadratic loss functions are obtained for real and complex cases, respectively. Based on the unbiased risk estimates, shrinkage estimators which are counterparts of the estimators due to Haff [L.R. Haff, Empirical Bayes estimation of the multivariate normal covariance matrix, Ann. Statist. 8 (1980) 586–697] are shown to improve upon the best scalar multiple of the empirical covariance matrix under the invariant quadratic loss functions for both real and complex multivariate normal distributions in the situation where the dimension of the variables is larger than the number of samples.  相似文献

Scalar polynomial statistics are found which have constant regression on the mean of a sample of Wishart matrices. The method used is to differentiate the characteristic function associated with the Wishart distribution, thus expressing the constant regression condition as a differential equation which is satisfied by the Wishart characteristic function. We study limit distributions of independent random matrices as well as limit joint distributions of their blocks under normalized partial traces composed with classical expectation. In particular, we are concerned with the ensemble of symmetric blocks of independent Hermitian random matrices which are asymptotically free, asymptotically free from diagonal deterministic matrices, and whose norms are uniformly bounded almost surely. This class contains symmetric blocks of unitarily invariant Hermitian random matrices whose asymptotic distributions are compactly supported probability measures on the real line. Our approach is based on the concept of matricial freeness which is a generalization of freeness in free probability. We show that the associated matricially free Gaussian operators provide a unified framework for studying the limit distributions of sums and products of independent rectangular random matrices, including non-Hermitian Gaussian matrices and matrices of Wishart type.  相似文献

Statistical tests not changed under an affine change of coordinate system are considered in the multivariate analysis. In the case of a multivariate linear model and a model using the canonical correlation analysis, these tests are functions of eigenvalues of matrices following a Wishart distribution. In this paper we prove the monotonicity property of test power functions being functions of elementary symmetric polynomials of eigenvalues of a matrix following a noncentral Wishart distribution.  相似文献

This paper deals with the asymptotic distribution of Wishart matrix and its application to the estimation of the population matrix parameter when the population eigenvalues are block-wise infinitely dispersed. We show that the appropriately normalized eigenvectors and eigenvalues asymptotically generate two Wishart matrices and one normally distributed random matrix, which are mutually independent. For a family of orthogonally equivariant estimators, we calculate the asymptotic risks with respect to the entropy or the quadratic loss function and derive the asymptotically best estimator among the family. We numerically show (1) the convergence in both the distributions and the risks are quick enough for a practical use, (2) the asymptotically best estimator is robust against the deviation of the population eigenvalues from the block-wise infinite dispersion.  相似文献

Summary Algebraic multilevel analogues of the BEPS preconditioner designed for solving discrete elliptic problems on grids with local refinement are formulated, and bounds on their relative condition numbers, with respect to the composite-grid matrix, are derived. TheV-cycle and, more generally,v-foldV-cycle multilevel BEPS preconditioners are presented and studied. It is proved that for 2-D problems theV-cycle multilevel BEPS is almost optimal, whereas thev-foldV-cycle algebraic multilevel BEPS is optimal under a mild restriction on the composite cell-centered grid. For thev-fold multilevel BEPS, the variational relation between the finite difference matrix and the corresponding matrix on the next-coarser level is not necessarily required. Since they are purely algebraically derived, thev-fold (v>1) multilevel BEPS preconditioners perform without any restrictionson the shape of subregions, unless the refinement is too fast. For theV-cycle BEPS preconditioner (2-D problem), a variational relation between the matrices on two consecutive grids is required, but there is no restriction on the method of refinement on the shape, or on the size of the subdomains.  相似文献

Classical Wishart distributions on the open convex cone of positive definite matrices and their fundamental features are extended to generalized Riesz and Wishart distributions associated with decomposable undirected graphs using the basic theory of exponential families. The families of these distributions are parameterized by their expectations/natural parameter and multivariate shape parameter and have a non-trivial overlap with the generalized Wishart distributions defined in Andersson and Wojnar (2004) [4] and [8]. This work also extends the Wishart distributions of type I in Letac and Massam (2007) [7] and, more importantly, presents an alternative point of view on the latter paper.  相似文献

This paper proposes two permutation tests based on the least distance estimator in a multivariate regression model. One is a type of t test statistic using the bootstrap method, and the other is a type of F test statistic using the sum of distances between observed and predicted values under the full and reduced models. We conducted a simulation study to compare the power of the proposed permutation tests with that of the parametric tests based on the least squares estimator for three types of hypotheses in several error distributions. The results indicate that the power of the proposed permutation tests is greater than that of the parametric tests when the error distribution is skewed like the Wishart distribution, has a heavy tail like the Cauchy distribution, or has outliers.  相似文献

Some comments on the results proposed by Srivastava [Singular Wishart and multivariate beta distributions, Ann. Statist. 31 (2003) 1537-1560] are presented. Definitions about a measure with respect to which a singular random matrix possesses a density are proposed. This paper presents a new discretization error quantification method for the numerical integration of ordinary differential equations. The error is modelled by using the Wishart distribution, which enables us to capture the correlation between variables. Error quantification is achieved by solving an optimization problem under the order constraints for the covariance matrices. Bayesian predictive densities for the 2-dimensional Wishart model are investigated. The performance of predictive densities is evaluated by using the Kullback–Leibler divergence. It is proved that a Bayesian predictive density based on a prior exactly dominates that based on the Jeffreys prior if the prior density satisfies some geometric conditions. An orthogonally invariant prior is introduced and it is shown that the Bayesian predictive density based on the prior is minimax and dominates that based on the right invariant prior with respect to the triangular group.  相似文献

A new combined technique based on the application of a linearization procedure either (i), the combination of Outer- and Picard-approximation or (ii) the combination of Newton- and Picard-approximation, and invariant imbedding is proposed for obtaining a numerical solution of the minimal surface equation. The existence of inverses of certain matrices appearing in the invariant imbedding equations and the stability of the algorithm are investigated. The minimal surface equation under various boundary conditions and the subsonic fluid flow problem are chosen as test examples for illustrating the method. The numerical results indicate that the proposed method can be used efficiently for solving elliptic problems of a highly nonlinear nature.  相似文献

In this paper we develop a technique for exploiting symmetry in the numerical treatment of boundary value problems (BVP) and eigenvalue problems which are invariant under a finite group of congruences of . This technique will be based upon suitable restriction matrices strictly related to a system of irreducible matrix representation of . Both Abelian and non-Abelian finite groups are considered. In the framework of symmetric Galerkin boundary element method (SGBEM), where the discretization matrices are typically full, to increase the computational gain we couple Panel Clustering Method [30] and Adaptive Cross Approximation algorithm [13] with restriction matrices introduced in this paper, showing some numerical examples. Applications of restriction matrices to SGBEM under the weaker assumption of partial geometrical symmetry, where the boundary has disconnected components, one of which is invariant, are proposed. The paper concludes with several numerical tests to demonstrate the effectiveness of the introduced technique in the numerical resolution of Dirichlet or Neumann invariant BVPs, in their differential or integral formulation.   相似文献

In this paper, the problems of estimating the covariance matrix in a Wishart distribution (refer as one-sample problem) and the scale matrix in a multi-variate F distribution (which arise naturally from a two-sample setting) are considered. A new class of estimators which shrink the eigenvalues towards their harmonic mean is proposed. The problem of testing the equality of coefficients of variation of independent normal populations is considered. For comparing two coefficients, we consider the signed-likelihood ratio test (SLRT) and propose a modified version of the SLRT, and a generalized test. Monte Carlo studies on the type I error rates of the tests indicate that the modified SLRT and the generalized test work satisfactorily even for very small samples, and they are comparable in terms of power. Generalized confidence intervals for the ratio of (or difference between) two coefficients of variation are also developed. A modified LRT for testing the equality of several coefficients of variation is also proposed and compared with an asymptotic test and a simulation-based small sample test. The proposed modified LRTs seem to be very satisfactory even for samples of size three. The methods are illustrated using two examples.  相似文献

The free Meixner laws arise as the distributions of orthogonal polynomials with constant-coefficient recursions. We show that these are the laws of the free pairs of random variables which have linear regressions and quadratic conditional variances when conditioned with respect to their sum. We apply this result to describe free Lévy processes with quadratic conditional variances, and to prove a converse implication related to asymptotic freeness of random Wishart matrices.  相似文献
