In this contribution, a model for the spatiotemporal dynamics of a thermal-coating process is derived from first principles (the conservation of energy). The model is a dynamical system consisting of a system of hyperbolic, partial differential equations (PDEs), describing the evolution of the temperature distribution of the substrate. By studying the C 0- semigroup generated by the system operator we find that in discrete time the infinite-dimensional plant may conveniently be represented by finite-dimensional operators defined on appropriately chosen Euclidean spaces. This representation provides the basis for numerical efficient solution of several optimal feedforward control problems associated with set point changes and launching of the process. Numerical and experimental studies highlight the value of this approach.  相似文献

We study here the problem of geometry optimization for a crystal in the Thomas–Fermi–Von Weizsäcker (TFW) solid-state setting, i.e., the problem of minimizing the TFW energy with respect to the periodic lattice defining the positions of the nuclei. We show the existence of such a minimum, and use for that purpose the TFW models of polymers and thin films defined in a previous work (X. Blanc and C. Le Bris, Adv. A particular feature of certain microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) is the appearance of a so-called “pull-in” instability, corresponding to a singularity in the underlying PDE model. We here consider a transient MEMS model and its optimal control via the dielectric properties of the membrane and/or the applied voltage. In contrast to the static case, the control problem suffers from low dimensionality of the control compared to the state and hence requires different techniques for establishing first order optimality conditions. Strong convergence of the numerical solution to a weak solution is proved for a nonlinear coupled flow and transport problem arising in porous media. The method combines a mixed finite element method for the pressure and velocity with an interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method in space for the concentration. Using functional tools specific to broken Sobolev spaces, the convergence of the broken gradient of the numerical concentration to the weak solution is obtained in the L2 norm. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Characterizations of quantum bordisms and integral bordisms in PDEs by means of subgroups of usual bordism groups are given. More precisely, it is proved that integral bordism groups can be expressed as extensions of quantum bordism groups and these last are extensions of subgroups of usual bordism groups. Furthermore, a complete cohomological characterization of integral bordism and quantum bordism is given. Applications to particular important classes of PDEs are considered. Finally, we give a complete characterization of integral and quantum singular bordisms by means of some suitable characteristic numbers. Some examples of interesting PDEs which arise in physics are also considered where existence of solutions with change of sectional topology (tunnel effect) is proved. As an application, we relate integral bordism to the spectral term that represents the space of conservation laws for PDEs. This also gives a general method to associate in a natural way a Hopf algebra to any PDE.  相似文献

Gaussian radial basis function (RBF) interpolation methods are theoretically spectrally accurate. However, in applications this accuracy is seldom realized due to the necessity of solving a very poorly conditioned linear system to evaluate the methods. Recently, by using approximate cardinal functions and restricting the method to a uniformly spaced grid (or a smooth mapping thereof), it has been shown that the Gaussian RBF method can be formulated in a matrix free framework that does not involve solving a linear system [ 1 ]. In this work, we differentiate the linear system‐free Gaussian (LSFG) method and use it to solve partial differential equations on unbounded domains that have solutions that decay rapidly and that are negligible at the ends of the grid. In this paper, we study the Dirichlet problem for the implicit degenerate nonlinear elliptic equation with variable exponent in a bounded domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^{n}$. We obtain sufficient conditions for the existence of a solution without regularization and any restriction between the exponents. We present a new algorithm for generating layer-adapted meshes for the finite element solution of singularly perturbed problems based on mesh partial differential equations (MPDEs). The ultimate goal is to design meshes that are similar to the well-known Bakhvalov meshes, but can be used in more general settings: specifically two-dimensional problems for which the optimal mesh is not tensor-product in nature. Our focus is on the efficient implementation of these algorithms, and numerical verification of their properties in a variety of settings. The MPDE is a nonlinear problem, and the efficiency with which it can be solved depends adversely on the magnitude of the perturbation parameter and the number of mesh intervals. We resolve this by proposing a scheme based on $h$-refinement. We present fully working FEniCS codes [Alnaes et al., Arch. Numer. Softw., 3 (100) (2015)] that implement these methods, facilitating their extension to other problems and settings.  相似文献

In this letter, it is shown that the centred box discretization for Hamiltonian PDEs with m ≥ 2 space dimensions is multisymplectic in the sense of Bridges and Reich in [1–6]. Multisymplectic discretizations for the generalized KP equation and the wave equation with 2 space dimensions, respectively, are given. This article studies a class of nonconforming spline collocation methods for solving elliptic PDEs in an irregular region with either triangular or quadrilateral partition. In the methods, classical Gaussian points are used as matching points and the special quadrature points in a triangle or quadrilateral element are used as collocation points. The solution and its normal derivative are imposed to be continuous at the marching points. The authors present theoretically the existence and uniqueness of the numerical solution as well as the optimal error estimate in H1‐norm for a spline collocation method with rectangular elements. Numerical results confirm the theoretical analysis and illustrate the high‐order accuracy and some superconvergence features of methods. Finally the authors apply the methods for solving two physical problems in compressible flow and linear elasticity, respectively. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Boundary observability and controllability problems for evolution equations governed by PDEs have been greatly studied in the past years. However, the problems were studied on a case-by-case basis, only for some particular types of boundary controls, and, moreover, several unnatural restrictions concerning lower-order terms were used.Our goal here is to give a general approach for boundary controllability problems, which is valid for all evolution PDEs of hyperbolic or ultrahyperbolic type, all boundary controls for which the corresponding homogeneous problem is well-posed, and all well-posedness spaces for the homogeneous problem. The first example of such equations is the class of hyperbolic equations, but valid examples are also equations such as the Schroedinger equation and various models for the plate equation.This work is essentially based on some apriori estimates of Carleman's type obtained by the author in a previous paper [29].This research was partially supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant NSF-DMS-8903747.  相似文献
